      Well considering Lucas was born in 2008, he grew up in the 2010s where Green Day wasn’t as well known as it was in the 90s and early/mid 2000s. I’m pretty sure there were artists before when I was born in 1996 that I haven’t heard of before. I haven’t heard of Peter Frampton until a year or two ago until my dad told me about them. I don’t know a single song by Devo or Dire Straits. I also don’t think that Lucas had that exposure of having someone else getting him into pop culture of the generation before he was born like Jaxon did.

      I think part of the problem is that music tends to be generational. Every generation believes their music was the best, and when that generation grows up their nostalgia for their music makes it difficult to understand why the younger generations don't know it, or love it, or sometimes don't even like it. When we become adults we often forget what it's like to be a teenager and we begin to behave like our parents and grandparents did to us - "You don't know Frank Sinatra?? What is wrong with you kids today!"

    Lucas and the girl in the brown hoodie need to expand their musical horizons. The Cranberries' Zombie was a powerful protest song in response to The Troubles and the IRA bombings up in Northern Ireland. It's a timeless, iconic song depicting and drawing attention to the horrors of war and conflict.

      This is all relative and subjective. I'm sure people from around the world would (including marginalized communities in your own country) would claim that YOU would need to "expand your musical horizons" for only being familiar with your specific exposure and knowledge. And yet, here we are, critiquing a 15 year old for knowing what she knows at her young age. Give her a break.
      Also: How are you so sure the OTHER teens are familiar with the song and its meaning (they may not be and may just shallowly know the tune). Why are you specifically focusing on Angel? 🤔🤔

    What's funny is that the 90s was a rebellion against the divas and corporate singers. Focusing on bands, the garage set-up, highly individualistic styles. And yet here we are in Generation Z where the divas have basically won and most everything sounds the same, with only a handful of exceptions making it mainstream.

      The 90s had its divas as well (e.g. Madonna, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera) and I don't think that these bands so much rebelled against them, but rather were just a different style (the rebels were more from the punk genre). YES. I miss it. Back in the 90s and early 2000s (I'd say before 2005), there was quite a lot of variety which is so missed. But especially in the rock genre where radios would play tons of variety within the genre. From grunge like Soundgarden to Nirvana to Funk-inspired rock music like 311 and Red Hot Chili Peppers to Ska Punk lie The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and No Doubt and Punk like Bad Religion and Green Day (their older work pre American Idiot).

    One thing I noticed on these videos is something that my 15-year-old son says all the time, about how things look. You know this is music and they seem to care equally about the production value and editing and how it looks. Find this interesting because the music videos were cool but it was about the music, not the video. Today's kids are so visual that they have made music a more visual medium than auditory.

      @droidgeist ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nah, music videos were huge back then too. Maybe more so, since MTV was still massive.
      Michael Jackson dropping Thriller was a huge deal. Smells Like Teen Spirit's iconic cheerleaders in the hell-dark gym. The lavishness of the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. Guns n' Roses epic wedding/funeral theme for November Rain.
      It's just that production looks old to these Gen Z eyes because they aren't in HD, and they also don't seem to get the aesthetic comedy - the four Alanis' in the car being OTT, the garish look of The Offspring video, etc. They think that's what being cool looked like in the 90s, that everyone is being sincere when half of these are satirical - deliberately exaggerated, deliberately being cringe and taking the piss out of certain things.

      @@drunvert I mentioned other songs beyond Thriller. Yeah, the production is better, but definitely disagree about quality. There's plenty of big movies that are lower quality than indie movies. When we Gen Xers were kids we knew all the stuff our parents listened to, because in the car we only had THE RADIO/CASSETTE DECK (or 8 track if you are old enough) and in the house the FAMILY RADIO, so we all listened to the same stuff. Most of us 70s kids did not even have our own radio in our room. Today every one has their own personal music player and high quality headphones so we can all listen to whatever we want, even in the same room with other people. I do not like that todays kids do not know their parents music in the way that Gen Xers did know their parent music, but that is just how it is today. (I blame SONY for inventing portable music)
