    A lot of controversy over this rig. It is without a doubt a great price for a clone of the Tamiya Bruiser. I mean almost identical, all the metal goods, 3 speed trans, leaf sprung goodness of the original.

    Thanks for the great review. That was nice of you to take the time to do that. I am an old school Tamiya guy also. I remember I had to work two paper rounds after school, in order to save up the money I needed to buy my Frog. I am 47 now, and I always liked the original one of these but I could never justify the price that was asked. I have 3 kids to feed, school and look after so they are top priority. I will definitely buy this model in a heartbeat. I can tell that it is very well put together, and I really don't care one iota about any copyright issues at all. As far as I can see, Tamiya has had it too good for too long. This is just fair competition in my eyes. Long may it continue.

    The Tamiya kit is now $1062 at tower! Insane. I can't support Tamiya when their kits cost a ridiculous amount of money. They make more money than I do so I'll choose the copy. I used to be brand loyal back in the day and purchased well over 50 tamiya trucks alone. I think I've lined Tamiya's pockets enough to not feel guilty for buying a copy of this truck at 1/5th the cost (as of 10/20/2018)

      exactly wheels...look at all TAMIYA's competition like the trx4..to me i rather buy the trx4 and get way better remote locking differentials and the trx4 includes the radio..unlike the bruiser and it's less than the TAMIYA...even the new trx 6x6 is cheaper

      _I can't support Tamiya when their kits cost a ridiculous amount of money._ If the products are manufactured locally, instead of in the People's Republic of Suicide Factories, that can explain the costs. The price tag, in that case, would include safe working conditions and decent pay.

    I have over 65 R/C cars and tanks and have been collecting for years and I don't think I have been as impressed as I was with this car for the money. I bought the kit version so I used better servos and ancillary electronics but it was so good I bought one for my brother for Christmas.
    A hobbywing 60A with a 45T engine, some 15kg servos and with my basic go-to radio, a GT3C/IT-4S it is just an awesome bash around the yard truck. It's not an associated or a mugen but for a few hundred it's the best run around I've ever owned. It has replaced my RC10T4 as the car I keep in the trunk for a bit of fun.
    The 2WD gives me a chance to slide and get loose the 4WD gets me anywhere.
    I bought a Proline body as the included body is too good to trash with my abuse and challenging driving style.
    Apart from my RC10B4, my main go to car, the best R/C car I own. Not the fastest but without doubt the most fun and such a good looking truck.
    I won't go into brand loyalty as that is a perspective but I doubt that Losi or Traxxas et al gave Associated much in royalties after the blatant RC10 rip offs over the years.
    It's racing and if an idea works they will copy, this is no different, in fact the build quality is better than my Hi-Lift Tamiya in many important areas.
    My BAJA 5B buggies are built with more aftermarket parts than original and in fact I built a complete car from aftermarket that shames my original 5B and 5T in quality and performance. At what point is it original...
    Grandads old axe had 4 new handles and 2 new heads but it's still grandads old axe :)

      well said, I have my Dads 78 Chrysler New Yorker Broham he bought new when I was 12,... It had a funky only used 2 or 3 years Lean Burn electronic ignition. Impossible to find and if you do 300mbuck plus ya gotta have a spare if your gonna drive the car very far,... I put a points style distributor in irt, changed the thermoquad carburetor out to a simple stupid edelbrock and it runs great,.. Just because the electronic ignition is unhooked under the hood don't make it so that that's not my dads old Chrysler. I like the axe example! Still grand dads axe, Still my Dads 78 Chrysler New Yorker Broham!

      And yet people still buy them.... Many for the nostalgia aspect... Or not to destroy their pristine vintage unit. Honestly if it weren't for rc4wd I highly doubt Tamiya would have ever reissued the kits 15 years or so ago. Heck a junk bruiser was running north of $500 us.

    I agree with you. In the end it is a toy and Tamiya was selling it for 700$. That's 900$cad! On Banggood this copy is 400$cad. We're talking a 500$ difference here! I have two choices: buy a toy for 900$ and feel good about supporting the original maker of the toy or buy a toy for 400$ and spend the remaining 500$ on my family. I can't see any argument that would convince me to send an extra 500$ to Tamiya. On the plus side, easy choices like this might be what will push Tamiya to make more affordable models.
    Thanks for your review! :)

      Is the 2012 Bruiser still made by Tamiya? If not, this is fine. If so, buying it discourages Tamiya (and others) from investing the money necessary to develop new RCs. If Tamiya didn't have to pay engineers to design it originally, they could sell these for this price as well.

    Before we display brand loyalty it might be wise to ask ourselves how much loyalty that manufacturer would show to us.
    When I bought an HPI Mini Trophy instead of a Chinese knockoff, I thought that, by investing in a quality brand, I was buying into reliable spare parts availability.
    It soon became apparent that the Mini Trophy has a heavy appetite for dogbone drive shafts, but I just went along, buying one set at a time as they were needed because I trusted HPI to keep making spares for my truck.
    Suddenly they blandly announced that it was no longer cost effective for them to supply spares for this model, and stopped. Now my Mini Trophy is effectively an expensive ornament. If some Chinese firm began offering knockoff driveshafts for my truck I´d show HPI the same degree of loyalty that they showed me!
    Obviously, if an original manufacturer´s currently offering a product, it´s a little harder to justify deciding to get the knockoff, but if the original developer won´t meet demand, well...I´m with Josh on this one.
    Tamiya need to meet demand at reasonably affordable prices. If they can´t or won´t do that, then my cash is going to end up in China, and I´ll leave consideration of the ethics involved to those whose job it is to decide these matters.

    as long as its legal to buy, you havent done anything wrong. i fly fpv mini quads and im a mechanic at a ford dealership and i have children in school. i buy the cheapest parts that are still good quality and whenever someone mentions that im not flying a 500 dollar quad i just tell them that if they want me to have the most expensive latest and greatest, then they can send it to me or write me a check and then ill fly whatever they want.but as long as im not breaking any laws then ill spend my extra money the way i see fit. i understand that people are ripping off ideas from other people that have put their time and money in designing and i can understand what the problem is but i cant buy what i cant afford. great video and you have a wonderful channel brother

    Great video. I just ordered mine. I have LOTS of Tamiya stuff and will continue to buy them, but I was never a customer for the Bruiser, just too expensive. I will probably drive it a tiny bit and detail the white body out and shelf queen it like many other models I have. I'm thinking chameleon paint since that was the rage in the 80's. And I'm keeping the chrome mini cab but will paint the windows and louvers black.

    RC Everyday: I have brought this very same point up in one of Team Associated`s videos of their new C12. They have to get with the times and start making products that will compete with the other company`s out there. the C12 is a nice truck but the truck body is all plastic meaning there is no windows they are just stickers ( i just did a review on it and will be posting it tomorrow). It has 4 LED`s 2 headlight and 2 marker lights but no tail lights and no option to add them since the tail lights are a piece of plastic with a sticker on it. not to mention the LED`s are hard-wired to the chassis so you cant even take the body all the way off if you want to work on the truck. This type of quality is not something I expected from AE especially for the price I paid. I expect stuff like that from the Chinese company`s but not from AE or Losi or HPI. Losi and AE made little 1/24 scale RC cars and the Chinese made better cars at a better price. The big names have to stop living in the glory days where a name could get people to buy your product, that just doesn't t cut it anymore we as consumers what the best deal for the buck and that goes with everything we buy. As far as Traxxas is concerned I am washing my hands of them for the stunt they pulled on a couple who does RC reviews here on youtube. long story short after the couple said the name X-Maxx in their video Traxxas ran to youtube and had them dinged and then went forward with the motion of suing them too. Traxxas then backed down and called off the dogs after a flood of people (me being one of them) attacked them relentlessly. I posted on every Traxxas video I could find how I felt about them "if it wasn't for the amount of money I have already spent I would burn all my trucks" that is one of my quotes. I then reported Traxxas for animal cruelty in one of their videos. I am proud of what I said and what I did. I am sick of big business thinking cuz they have money they can do whatever they want. ok so anyway I have more Traxxas vehicles to get rid of and when i do, I am done with them.

    Could you please try to fit the Bruiser chassis to the RC4WD Chevrolet Blazer body if you have time? I am curious to see how it will fit, because I have a Tamiya Mountaineer, which have exactly the same chassis as the Bruiser, and I wonder if it will fit the Blazer body. Looking at the specs, the wheelbase seem about the same, and with smaller tires and wheels it they may fit in the wheel wells of the Blazer. There are adapter kits to fit the standard center wheel bolts to be had.
    Cheers.

    Hey Josh, you’ve got my attention with this one! I might have to order one. As far as ethics go, that truck is made by the same company that currently makes the Tamiya stuff. Different badging, that’s all. Same with RC4WD...they are a brand, not a manufacturer. The Chinese company that sells their products to RC4WD to sell, ALSO sells the same identical products to other retailers to resell.

    I had the original bruiser. I forgot it's only 4 wheel drive in 1st gear. Back with the original 1 you had to use a stick controller and make a plate out of plastic be put on the left stick to shift. Maybe you know what I mean. I don't think they had pistol controllers back then. And I think the motor was a 750 not a 720.

    Brand loyalty needs to be earned, it is not just a given because they were the first, or their marketing is strong. My experience from brand name after market support has been less than stella. Those days are long gone now, consumers are not blocked by complex business to business logistics anymore, we are a global consumer in a global online marketplace. Manufacture to Consumer is becoming more the norm.
    I don't use local hobby stores anymore because there is an alternative now, that's all, it has nothing to do with brands. I also use Netflix instead of a local video rental store, buy mp3s online instead of music from local shops. Things change.

    • @RCeveryday
      @RCeveryday  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Very true brother. TImes are changing. I cant say no to a deal like this truck. It is awesome for the price. I have been with Tamiya since I was a child. Only had one issue with a kit and customer service was great. The local hobby shop is another touchy subject all together. Here in North texas there are too many people spread out over too large an area. Every now and then a shop will pop up that actually sells RC4wd and scale products but even though its in the metro area the customer base is too spread out to make it survive. Even in the 90's I had summer jobs and I lived and died by my Tower hobbies catalog. Because they had the things the shops didnt. Now its the internet bringing us directly to the manufacturer. I think of my channel and builds as a business, if I can get something cheaper im obligated to do so in order to make my business profitable sort of speak.

    • @muskokamike127
      @muskokamike127 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      cyanide: 3 years ago one tried to make a go of it in the small town I lived in. When I saw the renos going on at the location I couldn't help but think: wtf are you thinking? Not only netflix but torrent downloading will kill your business in a season. I think they were trying to make a go of the game rental as opposed to videos but they didn't last a year.
      What killed chains like Blockbuster is the blatant rip off by the distributors. For eg: When Alien vs Predator came out, they had 100 copies to rent. What they did was after a month or so of rental, they put the blu ray and dvds into the used rack and sold them for $10.00. Well, when AVP went in, there were 10 copies. I asked the manager (whom I'd spoken to many times before) he told me the distributor forced them to destroy 90 copies. He said that is normal, they destroy easily 90% of all popular videos to keep the demand up.
      So yeah, pure greed. I see NO problem with a studio making money off their product but to artificially inflate the price simply to squeeze one more penny out of your customers, well, now I just find my movies from alternative sources.
      Another example is my previous satellite tv provider: $15.00 for the FIRST terminator movie 25 years after it was released? give me a break.

    • @muskokamike127
      @muskokamike127 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      RC Everyday: I was like you, R/C was WAY out of my league and while I wanted to fly so bad as a kid, $2500 to get in the air was half the price my dad paid for our first house. Now? I have or had 1/2 dozen planes each under $100, one with a gyro was $50.00.
      I realize hobby shops have to stay in business but seriously, every one I ever went in was WAY over priced but we had no choice. One thing about Tamiya: In Canada, you cannot sell Tamiya via an online store. The only way you can get them (legally) is via Borgfeldt toys and they WILL not sell to online retailers. You have to have a brick and motor store.
      The tooling for model kits and R/C are tremendously expensive but with Tamiya, I always felt "do you have to make it up on 10 kits"? lol....I know the quality of their products is good, but seriously priced. I looked at some of their 1/12th motorcycle models and when I built a bunch, they were around $14.00. Last time I looked they were $40.00 where I lived....insane. No wonder kids these days aren't into model building, they can't afford it!

    Totally agree with everything said in this video. Look at it this way, Tamiya has milked this chassis. They sold it in ‘85, sold it again in 2012 and in 2017 the Mountain Rider came back. Always charging $700.00 USD for the kits. Year after year. It’s about time your average Joe who doesn’t wanna be afraid to spend $1000 and break something get to enjoy this now. Ordered one after this video and I am a Tamiya purist, as far as I am concerned, I and many of my RC friends supported the Tamiya company enough and I will continue to do so later. But for now, the Bruiser dream is a reality.

    I love Tamiya, a Midnight Pumpkin was my first hobby grade. Back in 1988. That said, right there with everyone saying its time for them to change. After market part's that Tamiya offer themselves should be added to something like a "pro kit" or whatever. Also coming out with a super scale "class zero" type of truck would be a great move on their part.

    even in the uk Tamiya kits don't come cheep, so to have this truck come out at almost under half the price of the tamiya you just can not say no. I think you are right in saying Tamiya are set in the past, just look how popular the wpl 1/16 trucks have been, Tamiya should off done something like them when they first came out with their tanks. I think your right Tamiya should release the hilux and the blazing blazer but only as a one speed 4x4 that way it could keep the price down and maybe compete with the other manufactures. like a lot of people who saw these kits when the first came out would of jumped at the chance to of owned one, but even then they where not cheep, they are going to buy this truck and I could be one of them

    To be honest, I bet this was PROBABLY made in the same Chinese factory Tamiya used to make their repops. Therefore, they had all the stampings and molds to recreate it exactly. As someone who has worked in a manufacturing environment, I am not opposed to getting products made in China. There are a lot of good plants that are producing "Japanese" quality products. They are catching on that the consumer doesn't want the "cheapo" Chinese made products anymore.

    • @grantc7812
      @grantc7812 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you knew the truth,... Tamiya probably owns this factory and this business. Ran out of buyers for their 8 or 900 dollar truck,.... used it up,... started making them under another name,... Im a Tamiya collector / restorer and have 3 82 Hi Lux, 1 Blazing blazer, 3 bruisers from 86 and 3 Mountaineers from 93,.. never bought a re re ….. I bought 2 of these , both in kit form a black and a white one because I of course have much better radio gear and I would want to disassemble this truck and re assemble it anyway so whats the point of Buying a RTR with cheap radio gear and not knowing wether or not the person who assembled the RTR did it right or not,.. the demand on these trucks is so high they gotta be throwing them together as fast as possible with almost no quality control what so ever,.. just bang em out and get em shipped.

      I totally agree with you. The Clones are just TOO attractively priced, to NOT buy them. And that's sad.
      I have been a Tamiya Loyalist since 1982, with their Lamborghini LM002, Army Spec Off-Road Vehicle! I spent 10 whole years, TRYING to make a Hornet WORK - at least as good as anything competitive at the time!! 😱
      When the Bruiser came out, I was a 20 year old BOY, who would have sold his Left Nut to get one!! It never happened.
      8 years later, I had another chance - but I chose to get the new Avante, which then, was $100 less than the Bruiser.
      When Tamiya Re-Re'ed the Bruiser a few years back - even with the *750 Motor,* I wanted it SO BAD! By then, I became completely Disabled, with NO WAY of coming up with the INSANE amount of money they wanted for it. 😱😥😭
      It was looking like I would NEVER be able to afford any Bruiser - and then THIS came out!! Am I upset that it's a shameless Clone? Absolutely!!
      Would it stop me from getting one?? Given my situation, as a very poor Disabled Veteran, if I can even afford THAT - *Yes, absolutely!*
      Would I be proud of it? No. But, as I'm getting closer to 60 years old, WITHOUT the Earning potential that seemingly Everyone else in the Hobby seems to, I just want to know what one FEELS like. I'm too old to be worried about impressing anyone!!

  • @CarminesRCTipsandTricks
    @CarminesRCTipsandTricks 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If I can ever.... I'm getting one! I was explaining my story as a reply to another comment here on your Video.
    Yeah, Clones bother me! Enough to not buy any?? HELL NO!
    Given the over inflation of RC Prices in the past 2 Decades (DESPITE the horrific Crash in 2007!!), and that now I'm a very poor Disabled Veteran, I haven't been able to afford ANY new Rigs, in over a Decade! 😭😭😭
    I can't even afford one of these *TOMATO" Clones!!! But IF I become able, I'm DAMN SURE getting one!!! The Nostalgia alone is worth it!! 🍺👍👍 That, and I wouldn't feel ANYTHING about Modifying anything on it.
    FIRST thing - *DUMP those NYLON Tires!!!!* 😱😫🙅 Never liked them, can't believe that they were also used on the Blackfoot - OG and re-re! And, on the Bruiser re-release! They're possibly the worst Tires EVER put on a RC.
    Second thing - RC4WD Leaf Springs.... because they WORK. Tamiya's Leaf Springs have always been too stiff.
    This will NEVER be a Pro Crawler, by any stretch. Nobody should expect that. But, since it won't Butthurt any Collectors, a couple of Mods to make it more pleasant for ME, why not??
    Thanks! This was an excellent look at this controversial Rig!
    Carmine 💥 ⛽

    Tamiya needs to have prices that are more affordable.. 750 for this truck and another company can sell them for 200.. thats a 500 dollar mark up for something they designed in the 70s-80s.. 300-400 would be a better argument for brand loyalty. But with a 500 dollar difference it feels like tamiya is just trying to stick it to people..

    In order to lock the axles, you've got to take out a set screw from the top of the differential and drop in a pin?!? Is there an access port for the set screw at least?
    There are lockable axles out there with a switch built right on to the axles, just push it from free to locked and you're ready to go. To go through all that just to lock the axles is beyond ridiculous.

      that version that was in the mag, has a funny story behind it. at that time I was driving truck when RCCA wanted to do the photo shoot. The truck wasn't quite finished so I actually packed up all my hobby tools and stuff, loaded it into my truck and off I went. At the photo shoot of course they , Chris, wanted to se it work, I turned it on and the batteries instantly dumped.. I was rather embarrassed. When I got back home and was able to try and figure what was wrong I ended up powering the truck with an outside power source, ( to give myself time to track the fault) and as im testing circuits….poof!....up in flames it went.... so needless to say that's when I started the third build... and that is the build that is documented and photographed on Martin Zurru's Buriser / 4Runner page. A much more refined version. but after all the time and money invested, I never got the nerve to turn it on.... and Thank you for the kind words.

    If you had $600 buget whats the BEST SCALE trail and crawler

      If I had $600 for a realistic scale rig I would probably get the rc4wd marlin crawler. Ive built so many TF2's and I know what they need to perform better, and the marlin version has a lot of those options right out of the box. Id spend the remaining money on paints to make it look more real though, lol

      Lance Larymore ... RC4WD has a bunch of really nice kits in 1/10, KING KONG RC has 3 fantastic kits in 1/12 that are even more scale than RC4WD with scale 2mm hex head bolts throughout the kit.

    I had the org Bruiser 28 years ago , I'd like to buy another , but for $1600 Can fundo's with tax , no chance in hell.
    Tamiya has completely lost their minds , Kyosho thank god kept their re-releases within reason.
    Using a old mold SHOULD be less expensive , not more expensive ..in theory , this is a open handed slap in the face.

    Is 4wd only in 2nd and 3rd gear?

    • @RCeveryday

      Just like the original Tamiya truck 4wd is only in 1st gear.

      RC Everyday Thanks for the reply. I never had a Bruiser so I wasn't sure. I will be ordering one of these...the actual Tamiya Bruiser is just too much $$$

    Tamiya is not exactly squeaky clean when it comes to copy right infringement. The original Clod Buster had to loose the Chevy grille, tailgate and Chevrolet branding. The Midnight pumpkin had to lose the Ford branding and even the Wild Willy had to have a grille remodel.

    Your video helped in my decision to pick this one up. I have had it for few months and now, and after few mods it has become pretty decent trail runner. I uploaded a few videos of the trail runs. Let me know what you think. Video #1: trail run - th-cam.com/video/Kj_Gn3-H5Ig/w-d-xo.html Video #2: Creek trail run - th-cam.com/video/6ksZkb5-bS4/w-d-xo.html

    Tamiya is raising all their prices on all their kits.
