Which is better? HG-P407 or HG-P417? Tamiya clones

  • Whether you support these Clones or not, they are 'probably' here to stay. But which is the best one?
    HG-P407 (Tamiya Bruiser Clone) Vs HG-P417 (Tamiya High-Lift Clone)
    Tamiya High-Lift Clone:
    www.banggood.com/HG-P417-1-or...
    Tamiya Bruiser Clone
    (UK select 'CZ' Warehouse for Banggood 1 Week delivery!):
    www.banggood.com/HG-P407-1-or...
    So the Bruiser clone is certainly the best value for money when you consider a real Tamiya Bruiser sells for about $850 and will only cost you $200 (ish), and the real Tamiya High-Lift is about $550, but the High-Lift Clone is $250. Tough choice, although neither are good crawlers, but with a bit of work, they can be relatively good trail trucks.

    I'm a Tamiya kid, I really am. But I'm sorry. When the Mountain Rider re-release came out at $700, I think they shot themselves in the foot. That's waaaaay too much of a nostalgia tax. I've always wanted one, but I'm not paying $800 for an objectively worse TrailFinder 2. I'd never be able to enjoy it! It'd be far too precious at that price point for me to want to drive it as intended, and I know it would just be terrible on anything dicier than a bumpy dirt trail.
    Do I think selling a direct copy is morally wrong? Yes. But so is smashing a bug over carefully moving it outside. I think you're allowed a little moral grey area as a consumer. Should you MAKE a copy and sell it? No. Should you BUY a copy? Sure. Go for it.
    There is NO reason the Bruiser should cost almost $900 in 2020. HG proved as much with the P407. If I can buy a CLOD BUSTER for $250, why not a Bruiser in the $300 range?? They did this to themselves. I couldn't afford one as a kid, and I still can't afford one now. The market cried out, and a third party listened.

      As a kid I always wanted a Bruiser. I just seen the re released Bruiser and the cheapest with shipping is over 700.00. I still want it but I might just buy a Clodbuster. Cheaper and I will probably have more fun with it. I was going to buy a re released Bruiser because it was 580.00 but at checkout the shipping was 150.00 -190.00 and that's why I didn't get it.

      The bruiser is over $1100 CDN now in Canada. Ridiculous for a vehicle that's been out for so many years. That's plus shipping too. Now with that being said, the 407 is now over $500 CDN.

    I love watching reviews like these...feel so vindicated in not chasing behind the more recognised brands all the time for something that won't give me anymore 'fun' for my money. I got myself a HG-P601 second hand for under a hundred. Needs a bit of a clean up, and the steering angle needs improving (left is quite poor) but now I'm getting into the hobby I know it can 'crawl' with the best of them, no sweat.

    Tomley, that's the kind of content that really sets your channel apart. Love the comparison. I got an RC4WD trailfinder 2 lwb few days ago because I do believe in supporting the manufacturers and RC hobby stores but also because RC4WD did a better job at creating a scale trail truck whereas I don't know what either of these trucks by Tamiya is... Is it a trail truck, crawler? I also really don't like how the servo in the Bruiser is way at the back and in the Highlift the pumpkins hang too low. What do you think?

    • @TomleyRC
      @TomleyRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Love the TR 2... and to be honest, Tamiya didn't really do a good job of these either, but in their defence at the time they were pretty cool. So many better crawlers out there for the same money as the Tamiyas. You can do a mod and put the servo up front, certainly something I'll be doing. Thanks for the kind words.

    Hi Phil great video , both trucks are great value compared to the tamiya model's , it would be nice to have the metal gears and wheels from the 407 on the 417 or a rear steer option on the 407 , im pretty sure that Banggood sells the metal transmission separately so that's one way of sorting out the highlift and you're right those small wheels do nothing for the look's of the truck ( looks like someone nicked the real ones and they were all they could find to get home lol )

    Not that either is a high performance Crawler...
    Of course I can't afford either, but I'd take the 407 with softer, proper Crawler Tyres.
    The 417 looks like pure nostalgia, for those who miss theirs. 96mm Tyres do not work on something like that. The run at the end proved that!

    I currently run it with only the rear diff locked, but on both end I notice; a) slop between the diff and the dirveshaft b) slopt between the gearbox and the driveshaft. Gives it quite a kick when driving. Curious where that is being caused.

    Thought about frankensteining my old Clod Buster into a kind of Custom Juggernaut with either a Bruiser chassis or a High Lift chassis
    (single centered motor, shaft driven 4x4x4, clod suspension, tires and shell)
    Thought the high lift was already a lot of money for an experiment I wouldn't know if I could execute correctly
    But when I saw what Tamiya is asking for the Bruiser, I really had to question what drugs they were on, especially since I would be needing 2 front axles to retain the 4-wheel steering
    My wallet resounded with a definite "NOPE!" For that kind of cash, I could build an entire ClodZilla in aftermarket parts from scratch
    With these 2 offerings, options are open again

    Nice video Phil I have noticed you have a lot of crawlers. I'm going to buy my first REAL crawler and I want to stay around 250.00 can you tell me the best one based on your experience? I'm thinking the best one would be the RGT EX86010CJ would you agree? or is there one that you would recommend that would be better?

    • @TomleyRC
      @TomleyRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Highly recommend the EX86010 or the longer wheelbase EX86110. Both very nice crawlers for the money

    The price is right, i love clones, why wouldn’t you, the same company that made the re re’s for Tamiya, make the clones, it’s a no brainer. Why pay £500 for something when you can get the same thing......the exact same thing....under £200. Simples. The HP417 is on the cards for my next rc purchase. I’m still not sure about the 4 wheel steering. Schools out on that one.

  • @NexusIncorporation

    i gonna see it on cristmas this year. Going for the 407 i like it a little more than the Highlift. i wouldnt wonder if these clones are actually are right the same just a diffrent Color and tamiya gets their kits labeled by them. I start with tamiya and honestly i love that company but lets be honest why Tamiya shouldn't do what anyone else does anyways for years now. i think they have some kind of licence otherwise someone already would have sued them i think just to get a share of what ever.

    • @TomleyRC

    Hopefully HG will come out with the long discontinued Tamiya Juggernaut Monster!! Maybe they will clone the Clod Buster also. I still think it’s wrong how they are stealing Tamiya’s Engineering !!! Yes Some of Tamiya’s products are high. But there stuff is made in Japan with excellent quality and these are Chinese knockoffs .

    Tamiya did all of the research and design and the Chinese company copied them to reap the profits. That Chinese stuff is garbage. Keep the company in business that brings us quality products and innovative designs -Tamiya.
