    I remember lusting after the original Bruiser when it first came out in the ‘80s. They were expensive kits even when they were brand new! I remember thinking, “who in their right mind would pay that much?!!” Needless to say, I’ve spent literally THOUSANDS in RC kits since then. 🙄

      @@kummakummakummakummakummac8606 yep it's nearly the same in all respects. I've had it for a little over a year now. Bought a few Bruiser parts for it because HG didn't sell them. Its generally a trail truck out of the box, but I've modded the suspension to net about 4" of flex to make it more of a rock crawler and trail truck. The 3 speed trans is a bit finicky with the shifting servo indexing, but mine stays mostly in low gear and I've pinned the axles to lock them. Pins are supplied with it. I picked mine up for $200, from Banggood, USA warehouse, I wouldn't order from the chinese warehouse, some things I ordered never arrived... also some parts from the Trailfinder II fit. I used their soft leaf springs and tall shock towers. The electronics are decent, still running all the stock gear. I've been working on painting and detailing it now. See my Instagram page "ccflgearhead" if you'd like more info, there is a video on my Instagram TV sub page with suspension mod details. Let me know if you've got any questions.

  • @vicferrarisgarage
    @vicferrarisgarage ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Let me give you some background to help explain some things. Both trucks have lic plate Bruiser because Tamiya is selling this truck as they are with many of their old line (Super champ now called fighting buggy). So they are not going to sue themselves over Tamiya copyright! Why not brand it as Tamiya you ask? Because Bang-good and Alibaba & AliExspress wont sell a brand name ie look up watch bands for G shock, they have no brand in pictures but when they arrive at your home they still say G shock on the band because it is G shock making money at a lower price and yep I sell G Shock wrist bands. Lol
    However Toyota is not onboard this time & so Tamiya can’t run the name or any other grill branding.
    Both trucks ARE made in same factory on same assembly line by Tamiya on west Ring rd Jiangsu China. Same place Tamiya has been since 1978.
    The transmission was a bad design from the start so they redesigned it. Wish they would update steering. Lol
    How do I know this information you ask? Because I went to China to a Pinball factory, a CNC factory and Tamiya factory for my personal eBay parts company in 2018 for two weeks to see what parts I could get my hands on. Hope that helps.

    Is this P407 fully compatible with Tamiya Bruiser? i mean, if for example you can replace the front grill of tamiya (toyota logo on the plastic) in order to replace the front grill of P407 without logo? Same if you put the body of the original on p407 and the opposite, does it matches? Sorry for my english, i am italian. 4:45 i think on the tamiya Bruiser tires are hard because they are much older.

    • @blkft
      @blkft 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have my original 1985 58519 Bruiser anymore, but the bodies should be interchangeable. The HG-P is based on the 2012 re release RN36 model.
      There are some differences between the 58519 and the RN36 models: 750 vs 540 motor, some transmission gears are different, and how the C-hubs are captured.
      First thing I'd do with a HG-P is swap in some higher quality bearings, especially in the axles. Relocate the steering servo and swap in some better tires. I'm using the Tamiya Bruiser plastic three piece rims.
      Also, be aware that the threaded metal seems more prone to strip. And the quality of hardware seems to be different too.

    • @kummakummakummakummakummac8606

      @@blkft - So is the 2012 re release the same as the original Bruiser? And is this clone essentially the same truck? I've always wanted one and was considering buying the 2012 re release unless I could get a original one cheap which I doubt.

    • @blkft
      @blkft 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kummakummakummakummakummac8606 The HG clone is basically the 2012 re release. The driveshafts on the clones are pretty much spaghetti noodles that need swapping. But I'd do the same with the Tamiya Bruiser shafts too. I used some stock Axial take offs I had laying around.
      The three tiny gears in the clone trans are made of pot metal and break easily(?). Mine hadn't yet but the 2012 model has plastic ones that are designed to break too. There are some brass ones (kurbdan?) that occasionally pop up on Ebay. Upgrade to higher quality sealed bearings in the axles, I went ahead and did the trans too. I bought mine thru Avidrc.com. Pick up some .3 and .5 shims from Tamiya to tighten up any slack too. I also purchased some front axle spacers from a TH-camr off Shapeways. Brings the front axle to the same width as the rear, more scale. Again, all the above I'd do and done with the 2012 model too.
      The 2012 model differs from the older 58519 series in that the trans of the older unit used a 750 size motor. With the 2012 and the clone you can swap in a high turn 05/540 (35-55T?) crawler motor with no modifications. Also, the 2012 Tamiya hop up clutch kit doesn't work without modifications. But look at it this way, it the trans blows just swap/mod in a aftermarket clone Axial unit (single or 2spd?).
      And that's what's nice about the clone is you can hack on it and not feel guilty, heck,,, buy two for spare parts. 😁
      Overall, like the original or 2012, it's a nice scale medium duty truck with leafs. Can it compete with a Axial or Traxxas? Nope, but it's cool to have and run. I might make mine into a truggy type crawler.
      Oh, the tires are like hockey pucks (hard!), but so were my 2012 and original 58 series.
      On the clone I picked up a set of 2.2 Tamiya Bruiser 3 piece plastic beadlocks and used some takeoff tires from my CR01.

    • @blkft
      @blkft 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kummakummakummakummakummac8606
      Also on the clones, take a lighter and heat up the cap head screws before removing them. Some have a type of loctite and some don't, if you buy the kit version over the rtr it's a mute point(?).
      Also, the radio that comes with the clone is not that bad. Altho, I pulled mine and been running it in a Vac U Tow boat (third channel barge release). Been working fine on the water for atleast two years do far.

    Highly unlikely the bodies are made from the same molds. Since the Toyota was removed from the grille and tailgate, complete new molds would have been made. With scanning technology today, it would be very easy for someone to remodel the body and create new molds. Nice comparison. Makes me want to buy one, because when I was young I could never afford the Tamiya.

      The "Toyota"-logo in the grille and the "Hilux 4WD" lettering on the sides of the cab have been eliminated in the Re-Release RN36 (#58519) from Tamiya and been replaced by stickers. So the body front of the HG-P 407 could be easily made from the same molds or a copy of them. Only the original bed has kept the molded in TOYOTA lettering. But I believe you are right mentioning the scanning technology.

    The HG-P407, I believe is based more on the Tamiya re release RN36 rather than the original 58519 Bruiser. There are diffetences in the axles and the transmission between the two.
    I had a original 58519 and a Blazin Blazer, even those were different. When I purchased a HG-P407 I thoight, "Dang this thing feels lighter and cheap-ish". Until I was able to compare it to a RN36 Re Re and noticed the similarities.
    I like the HG-P as it allows me to mod it out and not feel guilty,,,, or broke. The threaded cast metal on the HG seems to be more prone to stripping, no biggie though. Not sure if the RN36 Re Re is the same. Overall it's not a bad truck as long as you know its limitations.

    • @IllusionSector
      @IllusionSector 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      _HGs are cheap because their R&D cost was ZERO_ Not only that, but Tamiya has to actually pay Toyota for legal use of their vehicle's likeness, whereas HG are unburdened by such licensing costs. (Yeah, good luck enforcing *those* in China). That saving is reflected on the price tag. Moreover, if the legit Bruiser is still manufactured in Japan, as opposed to outsourced to a cheaper labor market, then you're also paying for that incomparably costlier Japanese labor.
      Legality aside, however, while the 407, the 409, and the 417 are clones, HG is *not* your typical Chinese knock-off company. They make some of the highest quality original RCs. Their military vehicles (e.g. the P408 Humvee) are unparalleled in their category, price range, and value. This is a clone, but it's a very solid, high-quality reproduction.
