Hello Bob! This has been most fascinating, seeing how you did brought back to the present an original... version!
As a noob to the dynamic models' world I just wanted to 'check the water' and see if I can find fun as I did in the static models' world, and so I wanted to get involved with a limited budget: this HG P407 I got for a bargain price (it was on sale plus a discount) is the perfect choice as a valid base you can enjoy straight out of the box, and start experimenting on improvements and refined modeling.
Hence following your path on this was a real pleasure and a stepping stone for me: indeed I've made all the mods you talk about here and I deem these as essential to really enjoy this RC. Now I'm stuck on the slippery shift gear that almost invariably misses the middle one: it works on the 4WD and on the high speed, but the medium speed is an hit and miss matter.
I even disassembled the gearbox as I was afraid of some mishaps, but all gears and ball bearings are in good shape.
There was a ton of red grease and everything was very slippery so I suspect this may also be a factor: I've de-greased all parts and I'm going to reassemble the gearbox placing the grease only where it is indicated on the manual.
Can I use Teflon grease on these all metal gears? Lithium? Silicon? Marine grease? Olive oil? ;D (all of these I have handy here)
Please advise.
This shift system may be a design fault but I hope to find a solution, eventually working on the rod or the servo.
Did you had any issue with it? Have you found some solution? It would be interesting to see you working on this all metal gearbox...

Mine shifts fine - never an issue. I would normally use teflon grease.
@@HobbyconceptsLLC I fixed it by resizing to the exact measures the shifting rod. Besides one washer (the top one in the gearbox on the side of the motor) it seems to be missing.
As a footnote to your video: you are stripping the chrome from the plastics using a de-greaser I wasn't able to find in EU, so I tried a different domestic brand that I also use to clean carburetors and engine parts (Chanteclair it's usually very powerful) but the HG parts were even harder than some original Tamiya ones I put under the same treatment: possibly HG has different batches...
In the end after four days in this bath the results were quite unsatisfactory, especially on the cabin that was almost untouched on its external surface!
So I opted with little hopes to use the common house bleach and lo and behold in 12 hours the chrome has literally vanished without a trace, leaving no residue not even in the pure bleach bath. Indeed a very efficient and cheap way to strip any painting from the plastic. It has to be used pure, so a little caution should be used to protect the skin and eyes, but I highly recommend it and the plastics are undamaged too.
Great video!! Thanks For Sharing!! I finally got around to making my clone tamiya look and perform better. So I was searching TH-cam for ideas. Mostly to see if anyone changed the hub to accept a 12mm wheels. Because I found some parts I must have bought to do that. I have so many RC’s and parts I don’t remember all the things I have bought over the years. I have to sell some. I wanted fix this up a bit because I never use it and will be selling it. I already painted it . Did the same as you but painted a flat like military green with a tan interior. Got rid of all the chrome too. Also used the same method with the super cleaner. But got rid of the rear cab completely and put roll bar and will be adding lights too. Don’t remember buying that but I’m pretty sure it’s from the Highlift. I also have the ford 350 clone that I’m doing and that roll bar is different. Love the steering mod!! Was hoping you were going to get rid of that whole box. So the body could be lowered a little more. I probably could do it the same way you did the steering. I subbed and will check out more of your videos. Hope you’re still making them!! Thank You👍👍

Thank you, I have thought of buying one of these as an intro to crawling project to learn the ins and outs of modding and finishing, you video has given me exactly the info I need to go forward. Identifying the issues takes experience and you obviously have that, and a clear down to earth jargon free way of presenting the info. It still looks like the suspension is rather stiff even after your changes.

The Bruiser is definitely one of my all time dream trucks but the suspension travel to me has always been an unrealistic issue. LOVE your modifications! Going to save this video for when I'm able to pick one of these up. Thank you!

I can't believe companies ship steering this bad. It's always been an issue with most kits, especially RTR's. Looks great, much better. I used the same colors from Tamiya on my CR01 Rock Socker, in the same spots.
I am definitely going to do this to mine, I bought it 6 months ago, haven't done anything to it but I will now that you addressed all the issues I've found with it. Thanks for posting. Great work.

Tip. Neon Sharpie works great for coloring marker lights. you can do it on the outside and it look real. orange in the front and red in the rear. Neon Sharpie.

I would like to thank you for your video. I have learned a lot and done most of the mods. The steering mod was amazing and my steering has very little if no play at all. I did run into having to tighten every screws and or bolt not many were tight. Thanks again Jay

Superb work on that truck, i plan to do a video of one of these HG P-407 on my rc channel. Great tips too. home made servo mount from angle alum is just awesome I've used the same for bumpers. I find the driver figure to be too tall in my bruiser builds, i just cut his belt line area and remove 1/8 inch and glue em back. turns out nice and you can see his face better. The leaf springs I've just drilled 1/16 holes in 6 spots in two leafs per side its just softens it, but your method is less work and works. Love color choices and getting the wife to help is awesome. I definitely subscribed

check out my Instagram ccflgearhead, I am modding one too, addressing the poor flex characteristics with new leaf springs, 100mm shocks and taller shock mounts. I was able to achieve 3.5" of flex at each tire! For the price and the scale appearance, and the ability to customize it, in my book this truck is a home run. Plenty of great info in this video and a few others on YT. The parts from the original Bruiser that I've ordered also fit perfect, this really is a true copy, imo.

Your front fog lights should be the turn signals, I have a Re Bruiser and and a TF2 with full leds and interiors. Have an HG P407 to do, and a Tamiya Mountain Rider to build alone with the Freightlinder Cascadia. Love the videos and ill be watching now!!! lovely truck, fantastic job , i have to admit i like the look of the old tires better although i do realise they are not as good as your new ones , its a shame Tamiya dont do the chevron type in a soft compound , just for myself lol.

Really nice work. I very much like that mica blue -- it's really shines in the sun. The color you've chosen for the half-cap, blacked out bumpers, etc. are spot on!! As for the rear links, while they really do look amazing, since they are longer and pivot from a different point than the leaf springs, they will swing in a different arc from the leafs so doesn't this create some binding in the suspension? I wonder how much more articulation there would be minus the links or with the front of the link soft-mounted so that it doesn't cause the suspension to bind. Anyway, I really like what you've done here. I have three of these now and I'm having a lot of fun with them. A great bargain all things considered.

Those tires are awesome, going to buy those. For the suspension I did not remove the leaf but changed the order. this way the leaf spring is still strong against torgue but the suspension itself is very soft. The best driving experience i got was when i just added a huge cargo load on it. It can have one or two kilo's and the car behaves even more realistic. I was thinking of making some kind of lead pack that can be mounted low. Still need to do the front steering servo. This is an awesome car. Thanks for giving me more Ideas. oh, have you found some good tires with a more realistic threads?
The Tamiya tires work great and have a very good price, but I agree about the look. A really great tire that looks better is the HPI Yokohama Geolander M/T. Officially licensed and fits this truck and the Bruiser perfectly. HPI part number is 4456.
I have a set but saving them for a Tamiya Bruiser build.
I have just realised the awful gap between the two halves of the body. Do you think it would be worth widening the screw holes so I can get the halves closer together and get rid of that unsightly gap?

Yes, same size, fit wheels perfectly and are nice and soft. Also a great price.

Looks great! I noticed you didn't move the rear axle back. Was it not possible?
Thanks! I did look at extending the wheelbase but decided to much work for the gain. Would need a longer driveshaft and the frame and rear frame extender would need a lot of work. In the end very happy with how it turned out. The steering upgrade is the best!

I have a P407 ordered and on the way and I'm currently ordering some upgrades. I was planning on installing real links in the rear too but the link on eBay is too old and doesn't exist anymore. I'm gonna order a set of links in different lengths but could you please tell me the length of yours so I'm at least in the ballpark with the set that I will be ordering.Thanks!

Do you have a suggestion for a ew body that will fit the HG P 401 chassis's? I know the HG chassis is close to the SCX chassis but not exact.
I just want something that has some interior details. I DO NOT want just a shell. Any help would be appreciated. I don't mind doing a little modding, but no major urgery. Please help if you can. Thanks, Brian
I like watching this video. What paint did you use for that. I take it you airbrushed all except the main body. Do you paint the underside of the body black or the same color of the body. Also, how many coats of clear on the body.
I do talak about the paint in the video. I usuall put about 3 coats of clear.
I have one question, how did you go about centering the rear axle under the wheel well? I've modded everything else except that. I guess moving the entire leaf spring assembly would do it but there isn't much extra movement in the rear shaft now.
After looking at it I did not lengthen the wheelbase. Would have been a lot of work for little gain. To do it you redrill the frame and then you need a longer driveshaft and torsion rods.
What tool did you use to thread the tie rod after you shortened it? Also, any recommendations for replacement batteries and chargers?
A tap and die set.

I always liked the look of the Bruiser do the HG P407. Plus tons of hop ups and parts are around.
How about to built LC40 killer body with stock axial scx10 frame kit. Cost would be the same?

I use Wiha screwdrivers or Craftsman Professional 41528. I have 2 of the Craftsman screwdrivers and ground the tip slightly on one of them, It is my favorite.

Does Super Clean work on paint as well? I've made a mistake during painting and need to strip the paint..
Super Clean will take paint off it will also eat aluminum

I just received my truck and ordered all of the parts you suggested - thanks for your video! Question - I don't like how "jumpy" the operation is (throttle not smooth), do you think it is the motor or the RC transmitter? Can you recommend a motor and transmitter to upgrade to?
Probably not the motor but the esc. You can change that to a better one like Hobbywing.

Did you have to sand all the body parts down before you primer them? Did HG have a paint on the white body parts? Did you use Tamiya Primer?
The white parts from HG come unpainted. I used Tamiya gray spray can primer. No need to sand the parts before painting but I wash them with dish soap and let dry before painting.

If you use the Ezy Off spray in the yellow can it will eat the chrome off immediately.
Did you have to glue the tires back on after you changed them to the softer tires?
Yes.
The radius arms that were used to replace the original ones don’t quite work. Once installed, they won’t let the rear springs compress completely. How did you address this problem? Thanks
Mine worked fine with no binding.
@@HobbyconceptsLLC Impossible. Those link rods will not let the axle move in its intended direction on the leaf springs. With leaf springs, the WB will increase as the suspension compresses, hence the swing shackles.
And BTW, they are not meant to center the axle. The stock arms are meant to stop axle swap.

The rear links keep the axle straight
@@HobbyconceptsLLC are the leafs not able to do that on their own? I've no experience with leafed rc cars, but in ful size jeeps, pickups, etc. They don't need links as the leafs themselves keeps the axle straight, that's the only reason I ask lol
