As someone who tends to Paint What She Sees, I'm full of admiration for how you've managed to add so much artistic value to the photograph. So often, I can't see the point of painting from a source photo because the photo itself is perfect and I just can't think how to inject some creativity into it! So your tutorial is inspirational; I just need to develop my imagination a bit!

Even taking a photo can never be 'perfect' depending on your artistic intent, think about all of the different grades of film stock and all the different ways lighting can impact your shot. Through the art of painting we can draw focus to certain areas of the image by changing the color/contrast or reimaging it as a dreamscape etc.
It's very hard to take a 'perfect' photograph to begin with, you usually take a series of shots and have to settle for the 'best' one of the moment but that doesn't mean you can't take a different interpretation from your shot still. I like art because you don't have to aim for perfect photorealism, you are free to use whatever color you want. There is a Netflix animated series called The Great Pretender and they use all sorts of crazy colors that aren't anything near realism I think it might help inspire you to check out some of that. Don't worry too much about the storyline but it is a good example of how art doesn't have to imitate life.

Very nice Susan. I just turned 73, I've been painting in acrylic for a few years now but recently trying pastels. I also belong to a plain air group, in my third year now with them. It's challenging painting on location but being out with now friends is enjoyable. Thanks for sharing your videos, helping me to learn more about pastel technique.

Hi Susan, I am so new to all of this (especially for an old lady at 62!), what with the You Tube videos and the different painting methods offered and the sheer wealth of SM creations that are now 'out there' just begging me to watch it all!! I am rediscovering my lost youth at never attending my beloved art college, so thank you, for helping enormously with that. I love that you say at the beginning you too were so pernickety and detailed etc when making paintings and I have ruined so many 'goes' at a painting recently through doing that already. I have so much to learn about this 'getting loose' thing that seems to be talked about so much :)))) I am an ex engineer and was a technical draughtsperson for over 45 years, so the detail and correctness of putting stuff on paper or on a PC has been there all my life and so is such a hard habit to break. It also inhibits imagination. If you had given me this photo to paint, I would have simply waded in with several different greys for the sky because that is what I saw, not the mauves and blues and purples or green for the fields etc, even though I am a very keen photographer and I can see all the colours in real life and the shadows etc so well. They just do not transfer to my hand!! I have learned so much in the few videos that I have watched of yours and I am so fortunate now to live in a picture perfect area of Southern Spain having emigrated from the often very dark UK. I live in the countryside with wonderful light and nature all around me, yet can I paint it very well? No. I guess I just need to practise more and spend more hours on You Tube! But thank you so much anyway for yet another invaluable lesson Susan. P.S I also like your initial's too, which are the same as mine for the signature ;0
Wow Sally, thanks so much for that wonderful comment. I think the engineering part of your mind makes it difficult sometimes to get loose and free. I can relate to that because my other career, before I lost it due to COVID-19, was accounting and bookkeeping. Everything is learnable though… And it’s best to practice with small fun studies rather than serious paintings. I’ll try to remember to create some tutorials that might help with that. So, from one SJ to another… Let’s keep learning and enjoying this beautiful journey.
Wow, at 68, I too am a beginner. I love what you both shared... just what God would have ordered!!! We all are on a journey and sometimes we feel like I'm thinking of watercoloring myself! ... after watching watercolor artists create beautiful painting for over a year, I thought I'd give it a go... but was terrified to make a mistake! Luckily for me, I like loose watercolor... still a bit just guessing at what I'm doing. I appreciate your tutorials and encouragement along the way. I'm a new fan and this is the first of your videos that I've seen. I just started making art last October and recently I've intuitively started doing a watercolor underpainting, then I add acrylics, and finish with pastels. That's a great question, Kate. In this painting I did seem to cover up much of the underpainting, but I usually like to leave bits of it peaking through. Also, it serves as a roadmap for the rest of the painting process. Even though I do underpaintings in pastel, I like to use watercolor because it doesn't take up any tooth of the paper and I can get more layering than I could if I used pastels first. :)

This is a beautiful video. Especially enjoyed watching your color choices both in the underpainting and the pastel. The illusion of nighttime is very clear and you have shown that in spite of the "darkness," you used many colors including the delicious intense blue. My tendency would be to mute everything down and it would have made for a dull and much less interesting painting.

When I first started lessons 40+ years ago it was all pastels and of course being a preteen I turned away from it. But I have found a new love for the medium and seeing your addition with watercolor has inspired me!! Few questions: When would you use clear gesso on a piece? And do you spray a fixative or sealant when you are done? Thanks so much for sharing all your gifts and talents!
Hi @pcuccia1, I never spray a fixative on a soft pastel painting since it always darkens the final image.
To protect my final painting for shipping or storing, I place them in a clear plastic bag I get from www.clearbags.com/bags/flat/flap-tape/crystal-clear. I buy the bags a bit larger than standard sizes so I will have room for the painting and a piece of foamcore board cut to the size of the painting. As far as the clear gesso. I like to lay down the under painting first, then apply the clear gesso over that once it dries. Hope this helps!

Thank you for your great videos. I"ve been painting mostly cityscapes in watercolor or acrylic. I haven't seen many cityscapes in pastel but mostly rural, pastoral scenes.. Do you feel pastel doesn't lend itself to them?
Yes, absolutely. Artist, Marla Baggetta just did a cityscape scene in pastel and posted here on TH-cam. You may want to see if you can find it. I love cityscapes, and hope to create more.

very original but please explain: which kind of pastel? oil pastel or chalk?
I use soft pastels because of their vibrancy. Oil pastels are quite different an application and although many artist create beautiful works with them, I’m still a fan of soft pastels.

Hello Susan! I've been a watercolor artist for a while but recently discovered soft pastels :). So nice to just apply some pigments.
I have a question, how would you say differentiate washes with water & alcohol? I've read somewhere that when you use water on pastelmat the sanded-ness goes away and then it's hard to use pastels on it? But you do? So this other person recommended an alcohol wash. I will try, but since the materials are quite expensive, I'd love to hear your opinion about this.

this is gorgeous !! just wanted to ask if Uart pastel paper can also handle watercolor underpaintings?
Yes, Uart paper is water friendly and very tough. I haven’t found many things I can’t do to it prior to pastel painting. You can also wash it off and re-purpose it if you’re not happy with your painting… The pastel will come off, but any watercolor painting will still be there. I have recently switched from Uart though to Fisher 400. Unfortunately, Uart paper curls and humid climates and some people say even and non-humid climates. Fisher is literally just like Uart but it doesn’t curl. I buy it from www.proartpanels.com

What is the difference between using water colour with pastel or alcohol with pastil dose it give a diva to look thank you take care
I think you may have meant using "water" with pastel vs. alcohol. It really looks about the same, but the alcohol dries faster. ;)

I notice you use small pieces to paint with. I am always using the whole stick. So, I like the idea of smaller pieces. Looks like I'll be breaking all mine in half!
Yes... I love breaking my pastels and using them on their sides like little brushes rather than using the tips of a longer pastel. I also sometimes use a cigar cutter to get a nice clean cut. Have fun!

what are you using? is that colored chalk? whats the name or brand name?
I use soft pastels (not oil pastels) and I use various brands. Some of my favorite brands are.... Unison, Mount Vision, Sennelier, and more. They are not cheap, but so worth it.
