I have often dreamed of making this video where I simplify many of the artistic principles for creating depth in paintings. Because we are trying, as artists, to capture a 3-Dimensional world and transfer our interpretation onto a 2-Dimensional surface, it is CRUCIAL that we understand these rules.
I pray these steps will be an "AHA!" moment for some beginning artists, and maybe even strengthen the skills of more experienced artists.
A great set for beginner pastel artists is the Sennelier 120 set of soft pastels called, The Paris Collection: amzn.to/3OzhKST

Artists would say this is the most important lesson to know. Like with a rose. The light and depth of the colors fool the eyes, makes the art appear real. Realistic type art need these hues.

Your teaching is amazing!!! I actually took art classes and teacher taught nothing! "Take a book & paint." That was the teaching! I was looking for a way to make my flat art look dimensional and I found you. Thank you so very much for explaining everything and now I am going to put your teaching into practice. Your head and shoulders above a lot of teachers so God bless you and keep smiling because you're making me smile.❤

I've never tried painting with acrylic before but I think I'm gonna try. I'm going for that LeRoy Neiman style. I don't know how he did it but his stuff is so good.

Dof depth of field came to mind watching this. So the camera analogy was good, but with say a wide angle lens for landscape, having a smaller aperture increases the depth of field. Another term I believe is aerial perspective.

GREAT video! The best discussion of creating depth in an art piece.
I first learned about this about 40 years ago in a Watercolor magazine article. You’d think that in the intervening decades there would be more good info about creating depth. But to this day in many of the art forums, people show their “flat” art and ask the question: “What’s wrong with my painting?”
It could be many things, but most of the time with landscape work it’s simply that they have not followed the rules of creating depth.
This is great work. I’ll be posting a link to this video to help folks out.
    Best,
    Dan.

This is the best example I’ve seen on how to create depth! I have a painting I don’t like that I painted for a friend. She loves it but I refuse to give it to her because I don’t love it. Somethings wrong! Well this it! My colors are the same and the sizes of the flowers in my painting are the same. I really hope I can fix it somehow or just do it over for her. Thanks for sharing your talents with us. You are an amazing teacher.

I’m a pretty new painter. I have done this painting of where I stayed in Kauai on the first anniversary of my husband’s passing because I knew it was going to be very hard. The center part of the hotel and the patio i are on top of a black rock pile where there are bushes and flowers growing and water flows through them into the pond below. I have looked at this painting for over a month and am unable to figure out what I need to do to make it look like a rock pile. Right now it just looks like black spaces with color blocks and blue lines. I attempted to send you a photo but it wouldn’t let me. Do you have any suggestions? Is there a different way to send you a photo of it? Your class is wonderful! Thank you for your help!

I wish you had been my art teacher at school .I might now be able to paint a picture!
However, with your clear, inspirational lessons, I think I might be able to do that as I now understand what to do.Thank you so much.X
