I love the way you took an incredibly boring reference photo and turned it into something so beautiful. The power of creativity… And you did it in 20 minutes
I love the way you break down the steps to make pastel painting accessible to those of us learning. I treated myself to your Terry Ludwig set. I look at my mailbox every day hoping they have come!
I decided I wanted to try my hand at my grandmother’s beautiful set of pastels which are now 50+ years old, so I turned your video on to give me a jumping off point. Wow! What a find. Your painting is amazing and your interpretation of the original reference really lovely. I so happy I found your channel and can’t wait to follow you. Thank you for sharing your talent.
You make it look so simple but when I try it, it’s definitely not. You are gifted - and such a generous teacher sharing your talent and knowledge. Thank you, Karen. You give me such joy - and hope
At the end of the 7 minute mark your painting reminded me of a William Turner painting...one of my very favorite artists. Amazing how you take such a drab picture and bring it to life with color.
Hi, I just created this, my first pastel painting, turned out pretty well, I'm a watercolor artist. They sure are a lot more forgiving than watercolors! But I painted with the vacuum at my side. 😁
Your painting was much more beautiful and dynamic than the photo you had for inspiration. Your use of the colors really made the picture come to life and turned what was a rather boring looking field into something beautiful. I have inherited my Mom's art supplies and among them was a box of soft pastels. I am hoping to learn how to use them to make beautiful paintings, myself.
So lovely, as always! I see a heart in purple in the sky on the left hand side. I think it is a sign from my mom who passed away in November. She was a watercolor artist and was so happy that I took up painting in the last few years. Perhaps I'm just looking for it, but I think it is a sign through your beautiful painting. ❤
Thank you for this. Describing the theoretical aspects of what you were trying to achieve in each moment of the painting while showing what you were doing was very useful. I benefited a lot from this video.
love how you transform a fairly bland photo into an incredibly dynamic and vivid painting. i paint with watercolor so i can't really put light values on top of dark, but i do get lots of inspiration regarding color and composition from your generous demos. thank you!
This is beautiful! You inspired me to paint a few snowmen. They were fun, simple and easy. I’m a senior citizen on break from my art classes and I didn’t want to rust. I enjoy watching you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Happy New Year!
Karen you are a great painter. One thing I see that you could have done. The greens are isolated a few marks of green in the fore ground grasses would unify the painting. Twenty minutes What ?You are a master.
So good to see you and your creations. Thank you so much for sharing and inspiring. Have a wonderful 2022 Karen. By the way, I took this advise from another video of yours, of using the same pallette, and I've painted 2 Completely different scenes. One a winter landscape and another just huge clouds in the sky. I hated the first one and I am loving the clouds. If I had put the pallette away It would have been just a waste of time picking it up. I thought of what you said and voila a painting that I am so happy with, and it's not even done yet. Thanks again!😘
You are so talented. The idea of putting multiple colors of same values certainly does make for interesting look. It’s so beautiful before you even finish. You just know perfectly what color to put where and it’s appearance is incredibly appealing. I truly enjoy watching you turn these creation from the opposite colors one would expect to see…. Into a gorgeous piece of artwork. You and your process amazes me. Thank you for sharing your thought process as you paint.
This was wonderful!! Thanks for walking us through one of these paintings from beginning to end. It really helped me understand how these are done and how to begin myself
Nice work. I do really enjoyed its growing up. But, I'd say you make it complicated rather than "just" simple. May be due to the multiple color overlaps you "professionally" used. Thanks for sharing this beauty .
I am inspired by this 20 min. painting you did. It is so vibrant; it really sings! I’m going to be exhibiting my paintings at the senior community where I live in Tucson, Arizona. These are a variety of media leading up to my recent passion for pastels. Once the show is mounted, I plan on making some small paintings and completing the commission of an 18x24” pastel of a French Poodle. I did a 9x12 preliminary painting which I am using as a guide for the larger version.
I have been watching you for years and I admire your painting, I am also like you, only I am an amateur this year and last year we experienced years of misery and pain, I wish the new year to bring you health and to do what your heart desires, thank you for everything you offer with your painting =Athens /Greece
Karen your teaching technique reminds me of the great mentor I had. A great painting , the greens in the trees could have been repeated in the foreground grasses they are a bit isolated. Repeats in the fore ground grasses would unify the painting.20 minutes WHAT ? Great work.
Wonderful to see what you accomplish in just twenty minutes. i am going to give this kind of painting a try. I always make rather elaborate paintings. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year Karen, a very beautiful work of art, and even nine minutes into the painting it would be complete for many minimalist or abstract artists, but you continued and did a wonderful job. Though totally unlike Rembrandt's realism, and as a compliment, I now pronounce you the "Rembrant" of pastel painting. Kudos!
Thank you for a fabulous demonstration! I am new to pastel painting but have already realised that the quality of soft pastels and paper one uses is important - what would you recommend that won’t break the bank?
Thanks so much for watching my video! I would recommend getting some harder pastels such as Nupastels or Rembrandts as well as softer ones. I love the Sennelier Paris half stick set. These are very soft but give you a good variety of colors and values. Unison pastels are also great soft pastels and also offer a half stick set. Rembrandt has 1/2 stick sets as well. Any of these sets would give you a great start!
I’m trying this 20 minute painting. So far it’s taken me two hours loll
Loh😂😂
😂😂I know, right?
13:11 the painting comes through you and not from you. A synchronous zone. Great stuff, very informative and inspiring.
I love the way you took an incredibly boring reference photo and turned it into something so beautiful. The power of creativity…
And you did it in 20 minutes
You make this look effortless.
Thanks!! I appreciate you watching!
I loved this! I especially appreciate how you interpret rather than duplicate the reference photo.
Thank you very much!!!
I watch. I listen. I think I understand.
But what you do and why is still a great mystery to me.
I love the way you break down the steps to make pastel painting accessible to those of us learning. I treated myself to your Terry Ludwig set. I look at my mailbox every day hoping they have come!
Wonderful! Thank you so much for choosing my set and watching my videos!
I find it so helpful how you explain the process of composition, colour and tone, thank you
Looks great! As someone with ADHD and someone who gets stuck in the details, the 20 minute idea is very smart.

I am amazed at the beauty you added to that boring old field! I too want to give this one a shot. It will probably take me a week! Lol

Thank you so much 😀
Wonderful gift to my artist development
At the end of the 7 minute mark your painting reminded me of a William Turner painting...one of my very favorite artists. Amazing how you take such a drab picture and bring it to life with color.
Thank you Sharon!
