      I think we are all so blessed to be able to learn so much from you about art and more! Thank you so much for everything that you do. Also, I am also from Western North Carolina and though I lived in Southern California for several years I am happily back home in NC. I would love to get together and paint some time if you do venture back this way.

    I’ve had oil pastels and paper for over a year. I would enjoy just putting color on paper, but sometimes felt like I could only do abstract art and could not get more satisfied since I do not know how to draw. Your tutorial has meant so much to me because now I was able to paint this landscape. I feel the proudest of myself artistically in years. Thank you so much!

    Haven’t seen an art video in awhile. Depression has gotten to me and I’ve basically given up on getting anything that would help me get back into teaching myself how to draw and such. Being on disability there isn’t a whole lot at the end of the month and when there is, there’s always something of higher priority then pen and paper. Anyway, it’s nice to see a video after so much time.

      Hello Ron, Jerry here. Please forgive me for any trespasses that I my create. I have a tip for you.
      Empathy, is my strongest suit; never would I put on the garment of sympathy.
      Do something to help someone else in their hard time, there's a lot out there today.
      As an example... Sometimes in my area during the summer, Hooker's find there way into many parts of town. Many get sick from the heat, and lack of food and water.
      As a former prison minister, I've learned about needs. Sharing a bottle of water and a energy bar, buffer's and clears the mind.
      I have phone number where they can find help.
      The sad part is, I've seen the before and after pictures... Heart breaking.
      Tip..!
      In helping someone else, the rewards are great. All you have to do is believe. He who inspired this conversation is there for everyone, including you.
      In the name of Jesus, the living Christ.

      Keep your head up Ronald! Something I have to tell myself EVERY DAY is that tomorrow will be better then today.. I to myself have fallen into a pretty bad depression considering I'm also dealing with postpartum depression. And the only reason I'm gonna tell you about what I'm going through I'm hopes that it helps you see that your not alone.. but 5 years ago my son's father and his new wife took him away from me for no reason but his wifes dad is in the military with like secret services kinda deal so needless to say he jsd good $ and also alot of connections so i have not been able to even see or hold my son in my arms for over 5 years and they just live the next town over, but couldnt afford a attorney so i got screwd ... Well then I get with my soon to be ex husband and he is very physically and emotionally abusive not to mention a heroin addict who got me using just so he could...left his ass of course.. then I meet the love of my life and things were perfect we were living in a beautiful townhome and got surprised with our beautiful daughter after being told that my son was a miracle baby and notnto expect another,... So I named her Estrella star In Spanish cause she is the light during my darkness... Well DCFS takes her right after birth cause she was born with drugs in her system 😮‍💨.. but in my defense I didn't know I was pregnant till I was already 7 1/2 months along so it would not be enough time before birth to have safely got 100% clean but I did slow down tremendously... Well then right after that my man gets arrested and was in jail for 4 months and then forced to a rehab for another 6 or 7 months and I told him that he would out grow me but he assured me he would never.. weeelll he did.. he just left me about a month ago after I held it down for him out here. Paid a 2,300 a month rent up till a month or so ago I got evicted... But I was supposed to go to treatment to get my daughter back too but dealing with being evicted and alone all the time I let my depression win and now the love of my life acts like everything he felt before was all clouded by the drugs... So now I have lost literally EVERYTHING and just trying to stay strong and take it one day at a time so I can get at least my babies.. I am currently 10 days sober.. I feel like shit but I will keep fighting.. just keep fighting Ronald there is always some type of star that will come just when you need it to be the light in you, just accept it and don't try to resist cause once you surrender yourself to change you will notice a few more smiles everyday I promise 😌

    Greetings from Western N.C. 🙂Thank you SO much for sharing this! I need to practice value. Plus, as part of homeschool I'm teaching the 7 elements of Art - our next chapter is observing color, followed by value. Can't wait to practice using these ideas & then share with my kid 😀 (she really loves realism so value is going to be a must). Also, your studies are absolutely beautiful!

    I loved this video! When my pastel set comes, I'm coming back to this for the technical lessons. This is a great base to start with. Thank you so much for this lesson. I still am struggling with the underpainting concept. Could you explain that one a little bit more? Is that the same as just a first layer?
    Thanks again! This was awesome!!

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, Rilee... I think this is a great lesson to start with. And you are correct that an underpainting is essentially the first layer. But there are some good general techniques for this first layer that can really effect your painting. Sometimes you can simply tone your surface to begin with.. (I sometimes like starting with vibrant colors). Or sometimes you might like to block in big shapes with local color (the color that is naturally in the scene). Other times you can block in big shapes with complementary color (the color opposite on the color wheel.). It can feel a bit overwhelming at first, but just know that there are no hard fast rules about underpaintings and there a lots of creative options. Now you have me wanting to make a video about all of the different underpainting techniques!

      Michelle, I only use the markers for Value Studies. It doesn’t really matter to me if they fade over time. I’m not selling them to a client. Most of the products that I use for finished pieces are lightfast. There are some fluorescent pastels though that seem to fade over time.

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, and that’s a great question. Often I will use pencil or charcoal to get my sketch in, but often I will use markers for a sketch if I’m going to apply a wet medium on top. This ensures that the marker will stay. If it was a charcoal pencil, it would run and remove the sketch.

      You could use pencils as well, the markers are just a quick and easy way to have different values. I sometimes use pencils in a similar way, but just apply more pressure to get darker values.

      Ha ha.... yes!! Never fails my face itches when I've got pastels all over my fingers. I've gotten good at rubbing my eyes and face with my knuckles. But I do keep a box of tissues near me when painting.

    Hello, i have a question.
    could i just use black for the closest trees in the painting insted of a really dark green for the same effekt(because i would have to buy the darker green seperately)
    and you used a second green in your grass that you said was lighter. But my lighter Green that i have is also warmer does this matter?
    Thank you for the awesome Tutorial!!!

    What is the best way to erase dark soft pastels?

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a stiff bristle brush to brush off most of the pastel, and then I even sometimes use a kneaded eraser to get off more pastel.

    I always feel compelled to blend (too much) with my finger, pipe foam, or vinyl glove! Then the “magic” disappears! How can I stop from doing this?! At this point I usually despair and overwork the piece to the point of having to abandon it… sigh.

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh honey.... that has been a problem for me in the past. I actually suggest blending only in the initial stages. Also, Working the entire painting with a light touch will keep the freshness. Try to let the pastels do the blending and not a blending tool once the painting starts to take shape. The reason a pastel painting will loose its brilliance is because over blending actually crushes the little crystals in the color. Try some small studies with these suggestions. Hope that helps.

    Newbie.. so please be kind. I know there is a difference between hard, soft and oil pastels. .. BUT are the staedtler soft pastel "chalks" a totally different medium?
    Thanks truly.

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great question Chantel. Soft pastels are made with pure pigment and very little binder, while Oil pastels are a medium made from pigment combined with a binder of wax and oil. They both behave differently and I prefer soft pastels. Some people mistakenly call Soft Pastels "chalk", but actually they are not. Chalk (like you use on a chalkboard) has very little color and mostly chalky binder). That's why they are often pale in color. Keep learning sweetie. These are the same kinds of questions I had when I got started.

    I am getting into pastels and am a patreon. I have newpastels, a set of sennelier and a set of Rembrandt. I notice you use a lot of colors that aren't in these sets. Do you have a recommended set? And do you recommend a brand of pastel pencils? Thank you, I'm excited to be working as a patreon, there is a lot to offer.

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Patricia, I don't often use pastel pencils but the set that I have which has been great over the years is by Gioconda. I do tend to lose a lot of different pastel colors when I work but that's because over the years I've been able to accumulate a decent supply of colors and values. It does take a while to expand your pastel selections, but even if you don't have the right color I recommend trying to get the value right. As you explore many of my tutorials you will learn more about some of my recommendations when it comes to sets of pastels. Thanks so much for supporting me as a patron!!!

    Lovely! What about oil pastels, and their colouring order? From light to dark like Iv seen. With your dry and soft pastels it is often from dark to light - I understand soft pastels are not oil pastels, so confused with oil pastels and their use on different papers, underpainting or not, and with what medium?

      Yes, there are definitely some challenges in painting when you’re left-handed. I have a little trick where I put my pinky down sometimes to stabilize my hand while I paint. I actually paint with my right hand sometimes when it’s more convenient. Hang in there, lefty sister! You know we are the only ones in our right mind, right?!
