    I'm sure you heard about the LEGO theme Speed Champions, but do you really know it? Did you realize that it was completely overhauled in the past 3 years and it's no longer a collection of branded vehicle playsets, but it became much much more? Let me show you 5 reasons why I think this is the best automotive LEGO theme nowadays!

    Agree with all points! Would add: I wish LEGO would introduce a greater variety of windscreen pieces, plus I wish LEGO would start a whole new line of non-speedracer regular cars that we all use(d) and see/saw on the road over the past decades. I really like that about the Nissan and the Audi: they look like vehicles you can recognise from real life.

    Five arguably really good reasons why Speed Champions has also become my most anticipated/favorite theme of each year. 8 wide for me is also the best reason as the theme no longer looks like they belong in a city layout but an actual display shelf. I also like how 8 wide is expanding into other themes such as the pretty excellent Batmobile, and Tumbler from fall last year. Can't wait to see the rumored F&F Charger, and 007 BD5 later this year.

  • @12171010011010
    @12171010011010 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    Been saying this for the longest time. No system set comes with such variety in building techniques, design, and small details for its size like the Speed Champions sets. It makes them worth buying despite being more expensive than a lot of other system sets. In a time where most Lego themes either have a boring restrictive license, or are becoming less imaginative and more formulaic, Speed Champions sets are on a whole other level. We never see that same effort used to replicate angels, intakes and general shapes like we do in Star Wars or Ninjago sets, despite those themes being considerably popular. Technic (with system pieces) and Creator come close at times, but aren't consistently as detailed relative to their size. For display purposes they are also ideal. Maybe one day we will get Speed Champions level detail in other modern sets, but something tells me that the reason Lego can afford to make these sets so detailed is because of their small size and licensing.

  • @SaperPl1
    @SaperPl1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +93

    I wish we had Speed Champions X Technic (transporter-sized) series from Lego. Getting more panels, suspension components to match this size would be awesome as well as having models in the same scale instead of each one requiring different space.

      @@GubstersGarage One set that I am aware of actually did give Speed Champion's cars suspension, and Lego used to have a system piece with inbuilt springs that I don't see any issue with replicating for today.

    • @12171010011010
      @12171010011010 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it would be ideal if Lego made a vehicles with a sturdy but light and hollow Technic structure and foundation, with minimal functions, and a mostly system shell for the external details. To me, that is the only feasible way I can see Lego actually making large scale Technic display vehicles better.
      Then, they can allocate all the Technic functionality and playability to just purely Technic (and maybe more affordable Mindstorms?) sets. One sub-theme for form, one for function.

    I've always collected some of the Speed Champions sets. Back when they were 6-wide I'd only get ones that I really really liked, like the Ford Fiesta rally car. But since they went to 8-wide I've gotten every kit, the building experience is nearly unparalleled and the added width really makes them feel more substantial.

    I use to be a diehard LEGO Architecture Series fan but those have slowed down over the years. I got my first Speed Champions set last year and I immediately fell in love. Mainly because of the fact that you truly get your bang for your Buck. I’m totally okay with the amount of stickers as long as it keeps the price down, which it is and I’m sure is the reason they aren’t printed elements.

    My issue with variety is Nissan GTR and Toyota Supra are the only Japanese cars in speed champions. While people like super cars, they are missing out on the JDM enthusiast market. Licensing is the hard obstacle here, just go ask any racing game developer. But with the Civic Type R, GR86, GR Yaris, LEGO has plenty of modern options, let alone the 90s classics.

    • @justincole1510
      @justincole1510 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you on this, LEGO should make more JDM cars for Speed Champions, and for their first time with both Nissan and Toyota, the cars they pick aren’t good picks, the R35 GTR looks fine, I think LEGO should of make it look like a regular road legal car and not a race car, but for the Supra, they should of gone with the Mk 4 than the Mk 5, a lot of people love the Mk 4 because of its popularity with the people, but also ties in with Paul Walker and Fast and Furious, if I think it was, but for the ones you mention, I will be fine, the GR86 looks sick, it actually looks like it’s predecessor but modern, and I like that more that the GR Supra

    • @sidewinded1

      @@justincole1510 the cars are great picks, they are icons of brands. Sorry, my bad. These two JDM cars are great picks, but I just don’t like they were design or in my livery that have on. I’m fine with any cars that I like. But if the LEGO model doesn’t look like the actual car irl. Then idk why the design sr did that. The Supra wasn’t my only least favorite set from 2021. The Chevy 2-pack with the Corvettes. The designer didn’t get the looks of both the C3 and C8.R Corvettes. I’ll like them to be much better looking, but where’s the resolve from it.

Downsides: I hate that the Lambo is white and never looks clean, especially since you put stickers on it and get your fingerprints everywhere, and it gets repetative to build several of them.

    Bought for the looks, stayed for the building experience.
    Honestly. There is no way people will ever understand the joy of building a Speed Champion just by looking at the collection of cars. They're worth every penny (and they don't cost much of a penny to begin with) just for the building experience alone, and having a really nice little model at the end is just extra. My most memorable Speed Champion building experience thus far remains that upside down windshield in the Senna, which still makes me go WTF whenever I look at it.

    This series is the reason I started buying Legos. I wanted to get a model of a Formula 1 car but most small models are quite expensive, then the Mercedes Lego set came out with the W12. I bought that one, and before I knew it I ended up building 12 in total so far (2 of them six studs), and will get 5 more in the next few months. I feel like having so much variety can help the series as some people might buy one of his favorite cars, and end up buying more because of how creative the builds are.

    I agree with you. The speed champions design and look are the best. Creator expert has a huge chance to become the best as they combine the best of bricks, like speed champions, and technic. If you can happily marry the looks of Creator Expert with Technic engine/gears and other mechanical features I think will be the perfect car models. Also maybe it can help reduce the price of the sets as well as reducing the size. Those technic cars are just way too big and way too expensive. Enjoyed this video topic! Great job sir!

    My collections coming along as I tend to get the Solo packs first but need to make sure I get some Double packs too. I also need to make a MOC garage/Showroom of sorts to really showcase my collection the change to 8 Stud wide was a needed and indisputable decision it greatly benefits the level of detail and accuracy achieved the angles and shapes of the cars are far greater than there 6 stud counterparts I hope for an anniversary we get remakes of the original waves.
    The Building experience and overall techniques used in the theme keep getting better and better so clever and satisfying to put together and for the price so much value for money pretty much unmatched with a licensed theme. Stickers and prints will always be a bane to the experience/theme as a whole if made into prints would boost prices greatly and remove the option to put them on or not and if you take your time and apply them with care then I assure you they look spectacular and elevate the level of accuracy. I'm longing for a Sian, Ford GT 1976 Mustang, BMW i8, DS Automobile and maybe a Fast and Furious sub line/crossover just a thought and a F1, Rally car/Off-Road even Dragsters theme, so much potential and one of my favorite LEGO themes.

    As long can I remember the biggest gearhead I've really known so well in person is me!
    this is easily my all time favourite LEGO theme because I finally feel I can make lego cars properly myself without messing up almost all the time (trial and error probably) and watching tutorials and became the tutorial guy myself (I still watch tutorial vids because they also have more better techiques than before)
    and
    it really just unleashed full potential for right now what lego cars would look like if we made few more bracket variants after another and some techniques that were never thinked of before (I still keep older LEGO cars for nostalgic purposes)
    the 8 stud wideness is really the sweet spot for Speed Champions for sure and another thing I noticed is that the newer sets feel really more different compared to the older ones because the older ones were bit off more telling about racing and motorsport and newer is more focused in the car itself.

    Another good video. I agree on every single point and argument except one: For me nothing beats the building techniques used in almost each Creator Expert vehicle - at least nothing in the Lego world. I recently built the SC Countach e.g. and while the techniques to get the rear shape right are great the sturdiness is not. Each of these four angled pieces is not secured as you would expect from an official model. The tricky part is always to secure such angled submodels at two points like the Mustang and Porsche windscreen e.g. which is not possible at SC scale. And while some CE models' proportions are more or less off (like 10262 and 10295) they are all a joy to build. You can even forgive 10262 its ugly look if you appreciate all those clever functions included. I wish there were more system brick scale models with a technic core.

    As a fan of the Speed Champions Lego series, i agree with what you said here, but i also wish they’d do more than what they have, like maybe some more trucks or even do some off road vehicles like jeeps and Baja trucks and not just run of the mill sports/hyper cars

    I know this is an older video, but just ran across it. I absolutely agree, and loved the comparison with the Technic kits. I got the McLaren Senna Technic kit recently, and am kind of glad I didn't pay for it myself. It's good, but not as good as it should be for the price. Even the six stud wide Senna ultimately felt like a more fulfilling building experience. I would definitely not object to revisiting some of the six stud cars for the eight stud treatment (the P1 and the Senna in particular, but also the 911 and the LaFerrari would be amazing). The cream of the crop is still the Countach for me, but I'm biased, because it's one of my favorite cars of all time. Keep up the good work, Lego.

    When I eventually build a LEGO City of my own (which will likely be at least a few years in the future), I want to use the new Road Plates and make 8 stud wide cars the standard.
    Obviously that will be a very expensive endeavor in general. And not all the vehicles would be Speed Champions (because some Speen Champion cars aren't normally seen on City streets), but I may build some MOC cars based on Speed Champions. I just hope that LEGO adds more commonly seen cars to the line-up.

    I began collecting Hot Wheels and other 1/64 diecast cars last year. Due to low stock, I looked to Legos as I didn't have many sets, but I cherished the few I did. I got into this theme about 2 months ago and I LOVE them. Have got a ton of the 2021 and 2022 sets and has been enjoyable all around. I wish that there were more sets, but I understand that designing these can take longer than 1/64 models. Big recommend and great video.

    Taking the Speed Champions from 6 wide to 8 wide has improved both the build experience and the finished product. I have a small collection of 6 wide, and the rest are 8 wide, and can tell the difference

  • @SuraSzellem
    @SuraSzellem 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The difference between the lego valkyrie amr and the one in grid is because the game uses an older prototype show design, while the lego car represents tze actual, manufactured AMR. Biggest diefferences are the headlights and the read spoiler section, and the wheels maybe

    The only complete to-date-series i have, and the only I've sought aftermarket above sticker. Definitely a bump up in cleverness. What brought me into Lego was Architecture, which is fairly dead now, but where the size constraints intrigued me in the cities skylines. Similar constraint here, but a lot more innovation. Keep it alive Lego, and revive the Architecture skylines series. We have hundreds of interesting cities to stylize.
