    You have written a good review. I spent 20 years in Army EOD Sept 1958 to Jul 1978. I walked into the EOD School at Indian Head Maryland, as a Private E2 and retired 20 years later as a MSG E-8 after declining a promotion to SGM E-9 6 months earlier. Been retired now for almost 43 years. I have great respect for those EOD Techs who have faced the growing expertise of terrorist bombmakers in todays world. Looking back, the VC and NVA IED makers were kindergarteners in comparison. Good work people!.

    Former EOD tech here. I lol'd when you got to the nuke phase and said "when you get here you've pretty much made it... it's all down hill from here". The _entire_ class before mine got dropped during nukes for rampant safety violations (throwing scba tanks and other totally crazy shit). Never get complacent and always keep a level head - things you would have assumed they would have learned by that point.

    As a 1977 EOD graduate (0-2), this overview was like flying @ 40,000 ft. Study, organizational, mechanic skills will be essential “on the ground” or in reality. If one has true 12th grade reading and study skills, one should be able to pass with no issues. In 1977 starting off in a class of 10, we had two graduate. It is truly one of the hardest schools in all branches of the military. When one hits one’s unit, hard works starts all over again. All the best.

    Wow, spot on, loved the vid. EOD grad from the Indian Head Sep 1982. The only big difference is in my day we were sent to Redstone for Chem training before we were allowed to go to Indian Head. And while they had an IED class it was so new they didn't grade it yet. Obviously a painful lesson with Stan and Iraq. But other than that the sequence was the same. Different services didn't allow Nukes immediately, Army had to serve 2-3 years with an EOD unit before they could finish that and get their crab for example (was called the Charles County Crab back then because Charles County college gave us college credits
    ). I was in the 2nd pipeline USAF class and got to enjoy 20 years as an EOD tech, God the instructors hated us at that time, lol.

    Former Core and Ground Instructor 2015-2018. It's not a bad description, but you did leave out the reasons we start with demo and TMDs. When the older crew went through in the early 2000s, we had Core 1, Demo, TMDs , and then Core 2. Most DORs were in Demo or TMDs at the time, and the brass reorganized the course so we could weed out those DORs early. Nice job.

    I almost enlisted a few years back but decided to finish my mechE degree, so now I’ll probably go the officer route...I really love EOD, just a little worried about having to memorize everything from classroom teachings only.. so used to university teachers not giving you the core info in-class & you instead always learn it on your own, outside of class

      You'll see people fail for everything. Physically, academically, and quitting.

    Hey Austin, quick question for you. Was there a fair amount of college graduates in your pipeline for EOD? I've been doing some research before talking to a recruiter, and I'd read that it is extremely difficult to obtain an officers contract coming from the civilian sector specifically for EOD, but I'm incredibly interested whatever the route may be. Thanks!

    • @austinflynn1843
      @austinflynn1843  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There were probably 4 or 5 enlisted dudes I was with who had their degrees yeah. It is indeed extremely difficult. For Air Force, you'll have to have some type of engineer degree, get picked up for a non-rated OTS board (extremely difficult), serve as a CE Lt for a number of years, apply to cross train into EOD, and then finally go to EOD school as a 1st Lt or Captain.

    I have a stupid question but what happens if you fail at any stage or week during EOD school, do they sent you back to start over or do they give you a different job or just flat out kick you out

    • @austinflynn1843
      @austinflynn1843  4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      That's a difficult question to answer. Typically, if you aren't sand bagging it and are taking full advantage of your study time, you'll get a retest. If you double tap (fail it again) you'll go to an academic review board and they'll recycle you to a later class. If you double tap again, they'll drop you from school and give you a different MOS/AFS. That being said, it's all treated on a case by case basis taking into account your reputation and past performance. In some instances, you'll get an additional retest after a second double tap. In other instances, you won't even get a retest after your first fail-just dropped.

      Not a whole lot of math, much less in depth equations. Just learn how to multiply, divide, add, subtract by hand. Converting minutes and seconds. Navy EOD goes to dive and freefall. I'm not sure about SERE. I know some Air Force guys who have gone to SERE and Airborne school and I had some AF instructors who went to dive. No freefall though. Marine EOD I believe has one duty station with a dive mission, and the Army has a unit that specifically supports Rangers, so they probably snag some Airborne school spots pretty easily. At the end of the day, you're an EOD tech first. Focus on being good at that. If you're squared away, you'll get your chance to go to some cool follow on schools.
