- In episode 22 of the Podcast, Jay Ly, a former Navy EOD Chief talks about what happened when he changed his contract from SEAL to EOD in boot camp. An uncommon decision that was made for all the right reasons.
Episode 22 goes live on 30 July 2023.

The hardest thing about Navy EOD is the first week of BUD/S.
Lol same with air rescue swimmers.
Oh snap
I was a Navy Reserve IS1. In 2006, I was deployed to Camp Speicher, Tikrit, assigned to EOD Mobil Unit 2. I had been, over years, Army, Army Res, Mass Army Guard, Hawaii Army Guard, US Navy Reserve and then activated to the US Navy. I had breaks in service over the years from 1973 to the end in 2009. The personnel I worked with at EOD MU2 were the coolest folks I ever met in uniform. ALL of the officers were Academy guys but nothing like the ring knockers of the West point type. I got back to Pearl Harbor on 7-7-07. I was 56. I was discharged May 2009.
My EOD officer was first a UDT 11 member, then after his first tour in 'Nam, went through Cadre training, and into SEAL team 1. He had four tours in 'Nam, including serving in PRU unit 1, Phoenix program, tasked with taking prisoners out of POW camps, work with MACVSOG etc. I met and worked with several such men during my time. Myself, USN Special Weapons Lebanon Grenada and NATO Europe 81-87
How to piss off a seal....take away his haircare products!!
Haircare is on the ANU, Authorized for Navy Use, livesaving equipment list
In the mid to late-2000's, the Navy (and the military) needed more EOD Techs. than the operators, because of IED's became the # 1 threat to U.S. Troops in both A'Stan & Iraq.
What EOD Class were you in, Chief?
Very True. I was 07-70N
@@echooscardelta4194 : '07? Damn! I feel old (I went in '99).
Hopefully, you did not spend all of your Enlistment Bonus (and since your are/were a Chief, I guess you got a nice Re-enlistment Bonus as well) on local strippers.
Geez! In 1978, you had to be second cousin to God to get a chance at EOD.
😂funny interview best training I’ve seen in Eglin FL Air Force base EOD school! I miss that time!
Like wow, things have really changed… “sponsoring your boot camp division???” EOD Dive Motivator???? SEAL Dive Motivator???? Never heard of any of these things…
Air rescue, SEAL, EOD, Diver and SWCC all have their own division and all have an added PT portion that prepares you for the specific challenge programs as mentioned with motivators from all those communities that give harder workouts and some wisdom for what is to come in those pipelines.
When I went through we only had dive motivators, no special divisions. It seems like the deditcated divisions were a success though. The navy got rid of them again, but looks like they're coming back.
I was on a senate table set.and connection of bans from one star to the next untill you can reach to fourth.and gel and swuillgs.
Five in SD patriot.yeah all
Easy just say 'Long live the Sisterhood'
bahaha, that'll do it
Glad to hear EODCM Seitz mentioned. He motivated a generation of techs and was CMC at EODMU THREE and CTF SPARTA.
Great title
I was in Jay Ly's 800 division in bootcamp. I remember him being down to earth and humble kid. Not sure if you'll see this but I'm glad you made it through and became a tech. Well done dude.
Jay used to be humble, man have things changed. JK. Thanks for commenting. Jay is a solid dude doing great things.
Nice.
Yes
Aren't there twin pins?
There aren't any more twin pins currently serving. There were quite a few at one point.
@@echooscardelta4194 I know one personally. Just wanted to let it be known that you could achieve both at the same time one point in time. 🤙🏽
@@echooscardelta4194 Also, thanks for taking the time to reply.
Lots of twin pins on Coronado Island in 1977-1980. I worked with several. Good dudes!
It is very rare now. Prior to 1995 it was more common. I think JT Turner was the last.
Never heard of a division in boot camp, mine sure wasn’t in 1978.
Isn't EOD's Motto; If Your see Me Running away, try and keep up? Did You cut the Red wire instead of the Blue one?
Two useless wars
Useless is a word. But the guys who fought them weren't the ones deciding. They were the ones who stepped up though.
@echooscardelta4194 right on that's the way I look at it. I got to work with some fine Vietnam era SEALs and EOD techs. Fine dudes. Enjoyed this interview. Myself, USN Special Weapons Lebanon Grenada and NATO Europe 81-87.
