My youngest son served six years in the USMC and, when his contract was over, he went USAF EOD. He's an E6, team leader, and one hell of a young man. Could not be prouder!
One my favorite quotes from an EOD guy I knew who served when I asked him if he ever gets nervous while deactivating bombs:
"Everytime I deactivate a bomb, I realize that if I mess up it's not my problem anymore."
They learn to say that…. My kid says the same thing

Retired USAF MSgt Bomb Tech 23 years active duty. My first 13 yrs during Vietnam I was an Ammo Tech but peace time Ammo didn't cut it so I cross trained into EOD. I know the mission has changed since I retired but the EOD job to me was the most fullfilling and diverse. My last duty station before I retired was Kadena AB Okinawa where we supported 3 off island bombing ranges and within the perimeter of Kadena. The WWII battle of Okinawa invasion beaches were the 8 miles of beach in front of Kadena. The U.S Navy used 14 million tons of ordnance to soften up the landing beaches so you know there was a lot of old ordnance left in the ground. We averaged around 130 calls a year for WWII ordnance mostly U.S. ordnance since the Japanese didn't have the dud rate our ordnance had. When you're part of an EOD Team they're closer than family, we depend on each other with our lives. I miss my Brothers dearly.

I wanna face my fear of death, is this the best way? I mean I have lots of fears and I wanna face them all, but death is one I think about often
@@powderbluelsd5118 I never considered EOD a dangerous job as long as you know what you're doing and stay smart. I once had a SSgt from Base Fuels that was declared an overage in his field and had to cross train and EOD was one of the fields he could select. He asked me how dangerous is EOD and I told him I considered his job driving a fuel truck around the flightline all day more hazardous than mine, jet fuel goes up a lot easier than ordnance. All the Techs I've ever worked with were true professionals and knew what they were doing. Most others at the time thought we were a bunch of crazy hard drinkers but you know if you keep people thinking you're nuts they don't mess with you... lol
I use to work in comms on Okinawa and it was not uncommon when laying pipe/conduit/fibers to run across UXOs. We seen a lot of the in Zukeran Base Housing . EOD was pretty much on our speed dial ;)
@@kfelix2934 I can imagine the amount of uxo you encountered considering how the battle of Okinawa was hard fought especially down around sugar loaf and hacksaw ridge. I loved my 4 yrs on Oki as EOD I was there in 70 as an Ammo Troop supporting the B-52s.

I went to BMT under Open Mechanical, and as we were going through our job list, I saw Explosive Ordinance Disposal right at the bottom. I put is as my number one, and put in a few other job listings in whatever order just in case I didn't get EOD.
A few weeks pass, and I go to the same building with my flight. I opened the letter assigned to me - at the top, it said, "SPECIAL ORDERS" in the classic military font. I was certain I was going to get EOD - my physical fitness and ASVAB scores were high enough for it, and they needed personnel really badly. A few weeks prior, an EOD Specialist spoke with me and 5 other trainees on the EOD class. They all bailed out - I was the only one who put my name down.
"2A6X2" it read.
"Wait, that's not two echo!" I said aloud.
I had gotten Aerospace Ground Equipment... and I wonder why. It was the 4th on my list... I guess they needed me more here? Or maybe there wasn't enough people for the course? I'm still unsure.
But everyone knows that I am going to be the damn best AGE Technician that I can possibly be, by taking care of our equipment and helping support aircraft. Maybe EOD will be an option in the future as a reenlistment, or possibly a reclass

I am a current retrainee. EOD(3E8x1) is currently a Shortfall listed AFSC and you can apply for retraining halfway through your current contract. Get in touch with your career assistance advisor or some supervisors in your work center that have experience with MyPers. Maintanence very rarely supports their troops retraining. As a first term airman you are guaranteed that right and they cant turn you down. Even if the Career Field Manager doesnt wasnt to release you. Don't lose sight of your dreams. Stay in the fight.

I think this is good for me because I am used to 4-5 hours of hard work and also because I think I’m pretty good at listening to instructors and learning but I just want a job where I am more on the battlefield
4-5 hours of hard work? Lol bruh maybe 8min. I’ve had duty days lasting 24 hours as an aircrew member.

I was workout out with my recruiter and I’m the next guy to leave to go EOD in my group and he was a CCT and he said we definitely deserve a beret just from the experiences he has had with EOD guys

How long is the EOD training pipeline?
2 years
U have basic training and then EOD “A school” which is different in its content and length depending on your branch. Then you have basic EOD school which is usually 36 months (barring injury or rerolls, again, depends on ur branch) after that, if ur anyone but navy, u go to ur unit and go into other schools (too long to list here). If ur navy, u still have to finish underwater EOD, jump school, and a number of other classes that make ur hair look awesome and ur shorts small. I josh, ex army EOD guy working with NAVY and AF doods, it all works bud.

Can you talk to any Air Force recruiter for EOD, or does it have to be a battlefield airman recruiter?
AJ Tomeček I went into the Air Force with an open contract. I am about to start the preliminary course Monday. From what I believe it can be a regular recruiter. Just talk to your recruiter and ask him/her questions about what you wanna do

Jake, Officers are managers whereas enlisted are technicians, The experience in managing cutting edge engineering projects will go a long way in the civilian sector

If you want to be an EOD officer in the AF, you must be a civil engineering officer. You will have some EOD assignments and assignments as a regular CE officer.
@jakepicard1837 As an EOD officer, you will not be doing hands on EOD work. The enlisted EOD techs do that. You would be an EOD flight commander, doing management duties.
