    Hey there FIU! I am a UF Gator living in NZ for +20 years now and this is just another example of how many things this little country does so well. It's a compassionate, caring, intelligent, and HUGELY patriotic place. It is a perfect example of how leadership, science, compassion, and citizenry work together. 5 million people taking it their stride with a daily Jacinda and Ashley show.

      Yes, NZ is a great place. I very much enjoyed my trip there. It has many features including a broadly-shared culture, small population and low density. I'm in Miami, and just our metro area is over 6 million people from a far wider range of countries and ethnic backgrounds than NZ. Half the population speaks a language other than English at home (most commonly Spanish)! And this is just the Miami metro area, which is incidentally 1/17th the land area of NZ.
      The U.S. is 330 million people, across 50 distinct states, with 50 powerful governors, and a unique history of codified skepticism of government. It's important to bear these facts in mind when comparing countries because often there is simply no comparison.

    As for our medical experts, Dr Ashley Bloomfield, NZ,s director general of health, the country have put him on a pedestal, made cool songs up about him, selling jewellery, towels, ect..., with his face on them.
    A really cool song is on a programme called “the spin off”. Hilarious.
    He came out everyday with the PM, and kept us very informed.

      @Paeata Clark Wrong guy. You’re talking about David Clark, minister of health, among whose many faults was he never fronted like the PM and the DG of health did. Bloomfield basically did the job Clark should have been doing, but as a civil servant rather than a politician, and coming from a medical background, he spoke with authority that Clark would never have had.

    The other important point to make is that our prime minister led us with kindness and exemplified compassion. Our media encouraged us with medical updates as things changed. Keep in mind before the pandemic happened we in nz went thru a shooting and our government acted on it straight away pulling out knew gun laws and being very sympathetic to whom was involved in it, the whole country supported it. At that point she had our trust. No we didn’t protest, communication and trust was the key. Government do what they have to do in order to keep order that’s why we vote for them. But you can’t lie to your people, otherwise you get anarchy. Simple.

    • @NZsarge1
      @NZsarge1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The “whole” country didn’t support the government’s actions around the Chch attack, it’s an extremely poorly considered and emotionally based reaction to an extremely disgusting act of an extremely disturbed individual. There was opposition to changes in gun laws, those opposing the laws were more than willing to have a reasonable discussion around the whole thing but the laws got rushed in with no real consultation with those who’d it effect and because it didn’t effect the mass of New Zealand’s citizenry and the emotional distress fresh in the psyche of the public those who were against a wholesale knee jerk reaction never got heard and this government took advantage of these factors to push through pointless reforms on a typically apathetic nation essentially demonizing a good portion of law abiding citizens to appeal to their woke base.

    • @NZsarge1
      @NZsarge1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @leftfoot So what knowledge is missing here? What exactly is a “gun nut”? Can you point to facts from trustworthy sources about where the opposition to the knee jerk reaction to firearms law changes came from? Even if you can point to a satisfactory source it doesn’t change the fact that laws were changed under bullshit urgency that demonized gun enthusiasts throughout NZ, the only thing that was achieved is that anti-gun “nuts” took disgusting advantage of a tragic situation, a sad bunch of opportunistic assholes that took advantage of an ignorant sentiment perpetuated by willfully ignorant bad actors.
      In short form nothing in you comment changes what I said in my comment.

    • @NZsarge1
      @NZsarge1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @leftfoot Again none of what you mentioned here changes facts, how it went down and wether it undertaken in a fair and honest manner (which it wasn’t). So you don’t agree with semi-auto firearms, good for you and best of luck to you but there are plenty of people who a gun enthusiasts that derive plenty of enjoyment from their guns, they enjoy all sorts of guns for all sorts of reasons. If this ban had any real effects on the possibility of something like this happening in the future I might more receptive but it doesn’t, all it’s done has effected law abiding citizens, that all it’s actually changed, nothing else.

    I think a big part of why the plan received public support was due to government assistance for incomes and businesses, e.g., wage subsidies and interest free business loans etc. If that financial support was not there, then perhaps pressure to keep things open might have been greater. That woulld have made containing the dreaded lurgy far more difficult.
    I see people saying NZ's example can not be applied elsewhere, because we are an island and are sparsely populated. Well, the UK is an island and it has not helped them. Most people in NZ live in cities. Auckland has three times the population of Detroit, so the sparse population argument looks quite flimsy too.
    P.S. As for China, I'd rather NZ does not get dragged into the USA's Asia Pivot etc. It is shaping up to be a new cold war. No thanks. We were lucky to survive the first one and should not presume we will be lucky a second time.
    What is it with the USA and its always looking to have adversaries? Why can't it look to just get along with the world and leave countries be? Human rights? Yeah right. USA is not exactly a world leader on that domestically and it supports the majority of the world's dictatorships. Maintains peace, i.e., Roman Peace? Nah. Endless wars and the USA has repeatedly polled internationally as the greatest threat to world peace (Gallup). Global hegemony and having the rest of the world bend the knee, so the USA can reap the lion's share? That might be it.
    War, sanctions, alliances against et cetera does not work very well at all to change countries and make them more like what the USA would want, even though I personally think the USA should butt the hell out of the rest of the world and allow the UN to do its job.
    What does make countries more like each other is cultural exchange. That can be achieved via time, trade and commerce etc. China and Vietnam are examples of this. Very closed communist countries that went to mixed market economies and then gradually the rest of the world has rubbed off on them. Both counties now have a lot of western influence. In time that will affect them politically (I would not want my internet censored and I oppose the death penalty, but there are actually things I admire about China. 100s of millions lifted from poverty. Life expectancy has increased too. The amazing logistical and supply chain infrastructure they have built. Education is another. Literacy is greatly improved, plus they now have a huge pool of skilled people. They develop enterprises so those skilled people can work in their field of expertise. It is not just labour costs that make multinationals want to set up there. They also seem far less bossy than the USA and more interested in trade than the grand chessboard type games the USA plays around the world. Seeing those positives alongside the negatives is why I do not do this simplistic and binary judgement of good country, bad country. When politicians do that they are usually seeking to demonize a place to justify their adversarial position towards it. Then the media and citizens are encouraged to follow suit. Unhealthy almost imperial mentality that is not critical, reasoned and rational).

All completing a 2 week quarantine. No one currently in hospital with the virus. Still only 22 have died. All these people were talked about and thought of the day they died (Not names) at the daily talks. New Zealanders are now trying to re-boot the local tourism with school holidays the last 2 weeks and places like ski fields have been doing more business than normal. School have now started the second term since the lockdown finished. People from the States for Lord of the Rings have finished their quarantines and are now working. We are open as normal in New Zealand. Our borders are only open for New Zealand citizens and people who have been accepted to come in. For citizens ALL medical is free. We have had full stadiums for Local Rugby. Masks are not required. Jacinda has already had talks letting us know what to expect over the coming months. Our economy is up and working well. Some people have lost jobs it will take time to sort. Like everywhere. Our election is in September. We were looking at having a bubble with Australia but currently they have their second wave so that is on the back burner for the moment. Never been so proud of being from New Zealand. We have 2 cases of community transmission and they are on top of it, everything has been traced. Still only 25 deaths but over 100,000 people have been through quarantine. The cases are in the far north and to date there is no lockdown in the country and we are living pretty much as normal.

    I completely disagree with her on communication.
    1. Going into was a panic. For example we had 2 days to close down our building site. It was chaos making it safe (yes H&S and security of the clients building and equipment and the tools, machinery was required). Getting workers that came from around the country home on short notice while the transport system was shutdown was a nightmare
    2. The communication during the lockdown was an embarrassment for anyone that understands scientific method. No stats about what was happening or trigger markers, future plans etc. Simply what had happened in the last 24hrs. The briefings were a bunch of sycophants asking their best friend how the day went. The only true questions occurred on the Friday briefing when Robertson (Anderns deputy) took over.
    3. No planning. Ever country knew from multiple events from previous years that they need plans. NZ had nothing, it was completely shooting from the hip, then pretending there was a plan.
    4. The call made was the right one. Ardern listened to those in health care, but even BS to cover up. For instance r ance they told everyone masks were not required, even withholding them from some health care staff, probably because there simply wasn't enough due to lack of planning
    Summary is there has been a lot of either self delusion, lying, or incompetence. This applies to every country I have observed.
    NZ still managed to get the correct calls. For any country this will still work today as there really only needs to be 2. Shutdown contact for the incubation/infection period, and close borders to prevent reinfection..

We know we'll have new cases because kiwis will be returning home from hot spots. We will deal with that. No country is finding this easy. America is making a huge mess of this crisis.
