Hi Ian - I always like seeing/hearing Stevie do "Mary Had a Little Lamb." The live version from Austin City Limits. That also gives you good evidence that the keyboard player, Reese Wynans, is also an excellent musician. All four are. There are different versions of "Double Trouble," the backing band, and they were all good.

One of his best performances was 1985 Capitol Theatre LIFE WITHOUT YOU, which he wrote for his dear friend and guitar repair man, who had just passed named Charlie, Who also made Stevie’s white guitar named Charlie. He gives a passionate speech during this performance, which is so prevalent today. RIP❤️‍🩹 SRV🎸

Stevie could not read music. Therefore, every song he played was different every time. He used 13 gauge strings, which made his fingers bleed, and he would 15:54 super glue them back together to finish a concert. Prior to this concert, he was in a cocaine coma, and they had to give him an IV to wake him up to perform and that is why he’s sweating profusely. However, he was sober almost 4 years before his tragic helicopter crash when he was 35. In his 1985 concert at Capitol Theatre when he is performing LIFE WITHOUT YOU for his dear friend, Charlie, his guitar repairman, who built Stevie’s white guitar named Charlie, Stevie makes the most benevolent speech that is still so prevalent today. RIP❤️‍🩹 SRV🎸

I was at Stevie Ray Vaughn's last concert the night his helicopter crashed after the show at Alpine Valley,Wisconsin August 26th 1990. The fog was so bad that we stopped and got a hotel room on the way home. The lineup was SRV, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, Stevie's brother Jimmie and Buddy Guy. RIP SRV!

SRV is the legend of Texas Blues. I had the opportunity to meet him on a couple times and attened several of his concerts. One of the nicest guys you could ever meet. Eric Clapton once said that Stevie is the only one that could make him hang up his guitar for good. Lol, great reaction. If the haters are coming out, then you know you are doing something right . Much ❤️

  • @lisar.6670

Stevie Ray was 7 when he picked up his first guitar and began plucking away at the strings. His biggest musical influences were blues men 'big brother' Jimmie (an accomplished, professional blues/rock guitarist in his own right), Albert King, Buddy Guy, jazz guitarists Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell and rock 'n' rollers Lonnie Mack and Jimi Hendrix. All of whom Stevie respected equally. So when you ask what was SRV's genre or musical style ... imo ... he was half rock 'n' roll, half jazz .. but his heart & soul was 100% committed to the blues throughout his entire life and career.
This brings us to your next question .. During this performance, how much of Stevie's guitar 'riffs' or note playing was already "set in stone" or improvised? #Texas Flood, #Mary Had A Little Lamb, #Voodoo Chile ... songs Stevie Ray covered and became famous for were already written and 'set in stone' by other artists long before anyone knew who Stevie Ray Vaughan was. Stevie never took any formal guitar lessons. He never learned how to read music but was able to teach himself how to play guitar. He would put on the records he had, find the 'note' sounds and practice for hours until he had the song memorized. As for the songs he had written ... #Crossfire, #Life Without You, #Dirty Pool (and others) ... lyrics were penned. However, because he was unable to read music, I can only imagine that he had probably hummed and/or played their melodies on guitar for Chris (his drummer) and Tommy (his bassist) to learn. During LIVE performances tho .. NO song of his or another artist was EVER played the same exact way twice. So one can say that all of his 'LIVE' guitar work was improvised.

There’s footage of him doing a sound check that is pretty good. It looks like he just rolls outta bed and walked on stage. I’d say that is certainly improvised. But yeah, he was known for not playing the same version twice…as was Hendrix and other greats.

Had no idea people dumped on you the last time out. WTF? SRV is a guitar god, and yes, he's a blues master, but the man could actually play ANYTHING. He was that good, a one-in-a-million player. The silver medallions on his hat are conchos, ornaments that come from the Tex-Mex-Indian culture. Have you checked out Duane Allman? Another guitarist at this level, also steeped in the blues, who died far too young. Take a peep at the Allman Brothers stuff from the early 70s. Love you getting into this music, I grew up smack in the middle of this. ❤

Hey sad to hear the haters came out on a SRV video at you! That is so wrong. Everybody can love whatever they are into and is not anybody else's business. That said Stevie is a phenom🎸🎶‼️💯💙. Never learned to read music but picked up the guitar at age 7 and taught himself how to play by listening to the greats on records. He is incapable playing the same way twice. There are structures to songs but his band members have to watch him like a hawk cuz they never know where he's going cuz Stevie doesn't either! They keep him supported whatever he does. They are all awesome. FYI almost all his live performances don't require a filter, but the El MaCambo seems to be the exception sometimes. Anything from Austin City Limits 1989, Capitol Theatre 1985, Toyko 1985, and so on are good to go.
The music simply flows out of him. He is so technically proficient that he only has to think of a sound and it comes out effortlessly.
For one of his great originals check out Aint Gone 'N' Give Up On Love from the Capitol Theatre 1985. He is the most passionate and captivating musician I have ever seen🎸💙‼️🎶
I enjoy your reactions but the only negative I have is all the F'Bombs😏✌️👋

If you notice he play's continual thru the whole song so basically the whole song is a guitar solo....it doesn't stop now imagine 9 or 10 songs with this virtuosity throughout....he played with 13 gauge strings which is insane so add that up this man was just phenomenal the GOAT period....even BB King blues legend and Eric Clapton another guitar legend we're amazed by him(look them up) which is huge!!! Sit back and enjoy because your in for a ride....by the way his voice was unfortunately overlooked by his playing but he had an amazing voice which you will see...he may not be EVH but it's the blues the Mother to rock and he did it to perfection!!!! Glad you enjoyed it and he passed away in Aug 1990 at 35 yrs old...I saw him live shortly before he passed and will never forget it!!! RIP SRV❤

Hendrix was very much a blue man as well…one of the greatest. Blues and Rock (what us gen x’ers call Classic Rock) were intersecting at the time. Rock and Roll, Blues, Gospel, and Country were all being put in the pot. It all came out as R&B, Funk, Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Southern Rock and later metal, punk, rap, new, wave, alternative, etc…

That night in Alpine Valley, Wisconsin. Stevie was on stage at a bluesfest. Eric Clapton was standing in the wing with Jimmy Vaughan, his brother, and someone else but im not sure who, but Eric said they were standing there with their jaws on the floor. You do realize that Stevie Ray was always playing rhythm and lead guitar parts at the same time.....simultaneously. It usually takes two guitar players to play the way he did. Stevie said he heard music, and tried to recreate the sound himself, not realizing that what he heard was multiple guitar players. Don't miss out on Jeff Healey and Stevie Ray Vaughan " Look at Little Sister". I noticed some comments mentioning Jeff Healey and a couple of his songs. Those songs are NOTHING in comparison to the that performance with Stevie. I'm not even kidding. Check it out. It makes you feel happy to be alive to witness it. Again, I'm not even kidding. I can't believe someone didn't suggest it to you, unless they haven't seen it yet either. Jeff and Stevie laid it ALL out there in that performance. Stevie also does that song without Jeff, and it is equally phenomenal. 👌💯💣💥

  • @dreww1609

0 comments saying Hip Hop isn't a genre because anyone who says that has to be too idiotic to know how to work the interwebs. Stevie is one of my top 4 favorite artists, and so is Tribe Called Quest. Those people haven't gotten stoned and taken a drive and listened to an Outkast album. As for THIS performance - I had the same reaction when I first saw it - this is the best humanly possible live guitar performance that exists. I still think that. He has the basic song structure, and riffs he goes to, but her was improvising MOST of the song - he never played the same song the same way twice. He is leaving this dimension, and bringing back notes from the ether and bursting them out of his Strat. He is just in his pocket, working that blues scale but adding all of Stevie's unique talents and elements to weave and slink around and then deliver crushing sounds - there's no one else, I mean that's the obvious point. And dude, ha, WTF people coming at you like for how you are dressed. Some people just suck, and especially anyone commenting on any website for anything any time, has some issues. I know I do - they just don't involve haterism. You did awesome, thanks! Peace//

You are young enough to be my grandson (if I had a baby when I was a teenager). Having said that, I am telling you that SRV is considered by most to be the GOAT. I saw him three times in the early eighties, in NYC, and he never played the same song, the same way twice. One show was in Radio City Music Hall (a small but time honored venue), he was such star, at the time, that his opening act were the Honeydrippers (the lead singer of that band is Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin fame). We nearly got tossed out of the show because we wanted to dance around (snobs). Go down the SRV rabbit hole, you will not be disappointed....

This is the quintessential SRV song for me, all blues, electric blues as in when the Delta blues boards the Amtrak and rides it all the way north, to Chicago, during the first Great Migration. Cats like BB King start plugging those guitars in. But somewhere along the way, Chicago goes to Texas, and that’s where we find our guy tonite being as true to the Blues as Muddy Waters himself.

  • @fargomonkey5133
    @fargomonkey5133 ปีที่แล้ว

There was an outline, a basic structure to his songs, but then he would mostly improv and color outside the lines.
He just played so well, that rather than trying to play, he just did it.... Just did what the music was doing.
He wasn't playing rehearsed notes, he was stringing together entire thoughts and phrases, and mostly just ad libbing them.
Of course, that's the great thing about blues in general, there is a structure, but within that structure there is so much room to make it your own, to personalize.
No one did that better than SRV.

  • @mrhalfstep
    @mrhalfstep ปีที่แล้ว

In the blues genre, that in and out between the vocal and the guitar, first lyric then the guitar, then the lyric, and back to the guitar, is referred to as "call and response". Sometimes it's even used between two different guitars as they seem to "talk" to each other in a musical conversation. It's a very widely used vehicle in blues music from all regions and of all types. I believe it originated from the field chants that were sung among southern slaves and share croppers as they labored on the farms and plantations. It really moves me as well.
It is so ingrained in some bluesmen that you will almost never hear them sing and play simultaneously. B.B. King comes, immediately, to mind.
Make no mistake, if you were in that audience, all those many years ago, before you were born, you got to watch the magnum opus of the greatest blues guitarist ever on the planet and and I don't think it was ever repeated. Those folks are members of a very privileged elite, IMHO

Vaughan wore a gambler bolero with a silver-plated concho band. All his hats were custom made by a craftsman in California.
Some think he wore black hats all the time, not true as he also wore tan and white felt hats especially later in his career.

I know it’s been answered about his improv, but to add one thing, he didn’t even tell his band which songs he was gonna play or how he was gonna play them. They knew the song if he told the crowd, or by the first few chords Stevie played. He deduced on what to play and how to play it in the moment, largely based on the crowd.

SRV had a pretty bad addiction to drugs and alcohol in the early days. At this show, he was very high on cocaine, thus the profuse sweating. And still, this is one of the best live shows ever recorded. SRV was the GOAT.

Yes. He was an improviser. He had a rough idea what he wanted to play, but he would make it up as he went along. He never played the same song the same way twice. You’ll see that if you look at different performances of the same song.

I heard you say that you play guitar. Then you’ll appreciate this. During this performance, he was playing on gauge 13 strings.

Whoever is hating on you because of your age is an idiot. I'm 48. I think it's awesome that a younger generation is falling in love with older artist. I'm new to your channel and don't know what/who all you've reacted to or what your whole background in music is. As a fan of both Stevie Ray and Nightwish wish I'd highly recommend you check out both Epica (similar to Nightwishl) and Led Zeppelin (rock with a heavy blues influence from the 70's). If you love SRV and Nightwish you'll love Epica and Led Zeppelin.

But... It's not an unrealeased, you played it during your live, it's from an EP or am I wrong ?

Outside of the base structure of the song, everything is improved and extended during his live shows and every performance is different meaning you never got a carbon copy of the same song twice. It all depends on his vibe and interpretation of the sound and emotion he feels like giving on a moment to moment basis.

Great review of a great blues guitarist.
Ignore the haters, I can't imagine that they have achieved a tenth of what you have achieved so far. Just think how much more you will achieve in the years to come.
Not to labour blues guitarists as the only interesting musicians out there, but I think you might find this live video of Canadian blues/jazz legend Jeff Healy even more impressive and truly inspiring . NO PRE-WORK ALLOWED, let's see you do a proper blind reaction to this exceptional song with fantastic performances by all the musicians involved. I wonder how long it will take for you to become truly understanding of Jeff's talent.
I said it before, I've never let you down yet!
    Here's hoping you'll give it a go.

Adding to my previous comment…AC/DC/Alice In Chains/Audioslave/Zep/Fleetwood Mac/Rush/Slipknot/Phil Collins/Genesis/Peter Gabriel/The Cult/Black Sabbath/Motionless In White/Rage Against the Machine/PANTERA/Bodies by Drowning Pool, cuz I was with the singer and that song is about a band we went to see. BTW I like your song. 😎☮️❤️

guitarists are directly linked to the instrument from the spine all the way to the fingers hitting the strings. It is purely religious. add a little electricity and it tweaks our spinal chord with every bit of tension we can build between notes.

Hip Hop is a genre. Anyone that says otherwise is an unhappy idiot. I give them only a minute of stunned silence out of pity and move forward. 🧐 As to how many of these trolls exist, "alot" is my answer. More importantly, if this is you at the end with "Pompei", you have real talent. I'm old and don't know much about the genre. I occasionally listen to Choppers. Lol. However, I am very impressed with your original content and want to encourage you. Thanks for sharing it.
