Gardiner's performance of the marvelous first movement is a particularly flowing and tender one. We hear the "heartache", but it is seems to express that this is indeed a path the believer is traveling "to heaven".

Je crois entendre une préfiguration des Passions. Musique céleste, excellents chef, chanteuses et chanteurs, et musiciens. Un grand bravo à toutes et à tous ceux qui nous permettent d' écouter encore aujourd'hui ces merveilleuses créations de Bach. Sans ces femmes et ces hommes, que je tiens à honorer par la présente,les beaux joyaux du passé musical seraient à jamais perdus.

Les cantates n'ont selon moi rien à envier aux Passions. Ce duo, quelle merveille. Et il donne une de ces pêches!

Yo le guardo cariño a esa aria; fue la primer aria que escuché de Bach en toda mi vida, tenía como 15 años en ese entonces. 🙂

It's a pity that we don't get to hear Mr Finley singing more Bach. I think it suits him very well.
