Johann Sebastian Bach's cantata BWV 3 "Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid" (Ah God, how oft a heartfelt grief) is a deeply moving piece. Bach uses the language of music to express the lament over the loss and mourning of Jesus, but also the patient faith in God, and the belief that there can be "joy after the pain" ("Freude nach dem Schmerze", from BWV 4, 1. Chorale)). How does the composer do it? Xoán Castiñeira and Rudolf Lutz explore the details of the cantata.
"Bach Factory" is a video series by the J.S. Bach-Stiftung St. Gallen that gives you interesting insights into Bach's cantatas - including exclusive excerpts from their live performance.
