  • Next on our tour of the public EV chargers in our area for this series of videos, we will plug in the Chevy Bolt EV to a Tesla Supercharger with Magic Dock connectors for CCS. This is the first Magic Dock supercharger in Texas and we even got to chat with @jaredcs whose tweet getting picked up by Electrek let me know that this Supercharger had them. I monitored the charge for 10 minutes while connected to a Veepeak OBD2 dongle.

    It was great talking to you! Pretty sweet 40kW charging at the Magic Dock.

      Love your Valentina’s TexMex shirt, Jared! I got one earlier this year. Love that place!

    Thanks for the demonstration of the magic dock setup. And yes there are many on the wrong side for charging. Now wait and see how things go.

    Great video, very informative. Hopefully Tesla will sort out the cable length issue. Thanks for posting.

    Hi, the end stall is for Teslas that tow.
    Tesla does have a supercharger in Henrietta, TX. 237 frontage road 76365

    I used the Tesla MagicDock we have in Oregon worked really well. I also have a Bolt. There was only a VW also using the MagicDock. I am interested to see what is going to happen when almost every CCS EV can access Tesla chargers. For me I will always use non Tesla chargers unless no other option. Though I imagine Tesla will keep adding chargers.

    Thank you so much for the videos and information. I just moved to Dallas and just purchased a 2023 Bolt EUV last week. So it is cool seeing videos about charging options locally. I did not discover your videos until Sunday night, after our first road trip in the Bolt. We went to Ruston, LA and our first stop was the Longview charger that you stopped at on your trip to Tennessee. I love the Bolt so far but have been super confused/frustrated by the Telsa charging news for Chevy. We had counted on using Tesla chargers for our road trip last weekend and if it were not for some kind Chevy dealerships, would have run out of power. I actually brought the bolt to the dealership yesterday, asking them to fix the problem with the Tesla Chargers. They came back with the official notice from Chevy corporate that Chevys will not be able to use Tesla chargers until 2024. How were you able to use a Tesla charger in the video here? We went through the exact same process with the app and Magic Dock 10+ times but kept getting the "unable to charge" message. I noticed you planned your trip to Tennessee not counting on Telsa chargers (smart planning that I wish we had done; rookie mistake). Anyway, thanks for all you do. Please keep info coming on latest on Tesla charging. I have 6 in my apartment that I can not use. Again, I had assumed I would be able to based on the news.

      My first attempt at this charger did not work, but it was just a matter of restarting the charge to get it to work. The magic dock chargers on 1-20 in Louisiana and Mississippi are fairly new. This supercharger in this video actually shut down completely (at least for non-teslas) for a few days. Your timing may have just been off,

    Awesome
    The state of charge channel interviewed the manager of Ford charging and he said that the tesla charging connector is open source and they don't pay tesla it seems to use the connector when they put it on ford's vehicles in the future as far as to be able to use it.

    Wouldn't hopping the bump line get more reach?

  • @Longsnowsm

    They really need to make pull through islands like gas stations. I understand there is some of that in the NEVI requirements, but it really should have been the standard from the beginning. This cable issue is likely why Tesla has delayed the Magic Dock.

    Seems like it was a bit slow on the charge rate. I can nearly always get ~52 kW around 40% on my Bolt EUV

    • @SpinnerEV
      @SpinnerEV  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That was showing net. It was 106 degrees and the AC was running, so it was closer to 45-48kw, I just didn’t check the app.

  • @Pierced777
    @Pierced777 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Can't someone create an extension adapter for more reach for non ev vehicles in order for this to not be such a nuisance?

  • @MyBoltEUV
    @MyBoltEUV 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Rhetorical Question. Why would they put magic docks on stations that 90 percent of CCS cars cannot reach? Things that make you go, hmmmm!

  • @Truav8r
    @Truav8r 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The problem of the location of the charge port is only temporary, and only on cars already built (like yours) and cars for the next year or so. But now, how much you wanna bet that the next gen Bolt EV (2025ish?) had its charge port located in the driver side rear tail light? (Or passenger side front bumper area, would work as well). Guaranteed that all the automakers that agreed to put NACS on their next gen of cars also implicitly agreed to put the new charge ports on the same side as Tesla. Problem solved. It’s only the (relatively few) existing vehicles that will have the issue (numbering in the thousands). But the millions of new vehicles yet to be produced won’t have that issue.

    This is interesting. With the decision by other brands to switch to the Tesla connector, I didn't expect Tesla to continue installing Magic Docks.
    The way that some CCS cars are going to have to park at these stations is probably going to cause some fights with Tesla drivers.

    • @SpinnerEV
      @SpinnerEV  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I agree. If they could install longer cables when the magic dock gets installed that could solve that potential problem. That said, I was there twice on consecutive days around 5-6pm and the supercharger wasn’t at all busy. I really could have parked sideways and not held anyone up. No more than 3 Teslas charging and only one other CCS vehicle, a Rivian R1T that has its port right up by the front bumper.

    Please don't occupy Tesla superchargers with slow charging Bolts.

    • @SpinnerEV

      I know this comment was put here as a way for you to amuse yourself, so congratulations. First, There were 13 empty superchargers while I was there, and no one lined up behind me for the pull through either day I was there. Second, I know my car charges slow, so I don’t take the 350 EA stations if a 150 is available, and if I see one that’s only giving 50kw, I take that one. And third, GM signed an agreement with Tesla to use the supercharger network starting in 2024, so get used to us peasants in Bolts charging there.
