Bad luck on that brake actuator. I've had my Bolt EV for 4 1/2 years and 53,000 miles, with zero problems. Most trouble free and maintenance free car I've ever had!😊
I had this happen to me with my 2022 Bolt EV. I did try disconnecting the battery and it didn't help me. What I had to do was press the power button without my foot on the brake which turned it off, then walk 25 feet from the car with the key in hand, and wait until the count of 30. I came back to the car, stepped in, and turned the car on like normal! I was so relieved when it turned back on and shifted into gear.
You are a very patient man. One day I think I will buy a Bolt. I presently have a Dodge Neon that I am nudging along for as long as I can. I don't drive much as I am retired. But I do admire your attitude.
This definitely doesn't seem like an EV problem to me, and as much as I want to say it's a GM problem, this really seems like something that just happens on any car. Things go wrong sometimes; it's not because it's an EV and it's not because it's a GM. Glad you were able to get it figured out and keep faith in your car.
Excellent point, but I'd reword it as being an automotive industry problem. WHY THE FUCK ????? and I mean WHY THE FUCK? Do we take something mechanical, simple and "fuck up" proof and turn it into a software controled system? Parking brake, shifter, glove box locking ( Teslas ) and many other useless gadgets? I have a 2023 BOLT EUV and a 2015 VOLT, where the VOLT has the old school mechanical shifter that NEVER FAILED yet.
What exactly is an "EV problem" then? These odd stalling glitches happen to a wide range of EVs. Anything so software dependent is going to have bugs similar to smartphones or PCs. And most people have no way to observe the hidden machinations of a computer.
@@bmw803 EVs are nowhere near as simple as you're claiming, in their inner workings. There are all sorts of battery management systems designed to maximize range, etc. The general path of technology is to get more complex, like it or not. Good engineering becomes ever more critical and some EV brands will emerge as more reliable than others.
@@falseprogress Obviously. My point was taking something simple and making it more complex. A mechanical item isn't failure free , but much much easier to correct. Parking brake is an example. The worst that happens is it will eventually seize. But replacing it is much simpler and cheaper. As for EVs, I agree, they're not as simple as people think.
Thanks for all your information on the Bolt breakdown and how it was resolved. Kind of scary that a parking brake actuator would disable the entire car from operating. Must be kind of a closed loop electronic system. Plan on getting a Bolt EV 2LT this coming Spring 2023. I guess things happen. Good luck with your Bolt from here on out. Take care.
Look like this is a very good system; if the software allows people to drive it going to generate a lot of heat, and going to cause a lot of damage to the wheels. This kind of problem should not happen during drive because the brake actuator would not engage at the first place. This means the software took an appropriate action.
I had this exact same issue one day randomly when I went to go move my car to another parking spot at my workplace; displayed the same message and wouldn't turn off. Eventually, I opened the door, then closed it, then held the power button and it shut off, then I turned it back on and it shifted into gear without issue - hasn't happened since. It seemingly happened when I turned the car on and tried to shift into drive prior to the car being completely on (I tried putting it in drive before the screens were displaying everything)
When I took my Bolt EUV into the dealership to get a software update to correct a message that was getting thrown; I was told that it would be a couple of days before they could get to it because only 2 of the dealership's mechanics were certified to work on EVs. They went on to explain that even for something as simple as plugging in a cable and clicking "update software" on a computer; if the mechanic was not certified to work on EVs, they are not allowed to do any work on EVs. I took my car in on a Saturday and was told that neither of the EV certified mechanics would be in until Wednesday. With the Equinox, Blazer, and Sliverado EVs due to start hitting dealership lots within the next year; I hope Chevy dealerships are making plans to get all of their mechanics trained and certified to work on EVs in the not-too-distant future.
This happened to me, too. I couldn't find anything on line about this issue. After waiting several hours for a tow truck, my husband brought me a sandwich and coffee. When he cancelled an online meeting, a friend suggested getting far enough away so the key fob couldn't communicate with the car and then waiting until it (hopefully) shut itself down. I had been inside because it was cold and some of the time of the time was apparently far enough away so that happened. I got in the car, found it was off, turned it on and shifted into drive. I took it to the dealership. They ran diagnostics on it and couldn't find anything wrong. That friend suggested putting a piece of foil in the car so if it happened again, I could wrap the key fob and wait in the car. As I am a white-haired old lady, I can only imagine what the guys in the service department would have thought had a tow truck brought them a car which started up just fine. BTW, the car had 502 miles on it.
There is usually a mechanical microswitch attached to the brake pedal assembly as well as the conventional hydraulic brake pressure switch for brake lights etc. The mechanical switch can often sense even very mild deflection and is used for power on & transmission selection while the hydraulic pressure sensor is for actual braking control. Failure of the mechanical switch will cause failure to boot up and failure to shift to/from park to drive/reverse (if already booted).
Thank you. I now have a 10mm wrench in the glove box, and the next time I get a recall for software update I will not put it off. One thought, if you live in an area where the parking brake is not used much, I'd exercise it every so often.
Thank you for this. i’m glad your dealer and GM took care of you. My Bolt had multiple propulsion power messages and as a result I did not have a car for 5 months. I just got it back and it is making some noises, so I’m hoping it doesn’t go bad again. I love my car too and hope you have many great years with yours.
Yes, disconnect the 12V battery. Why would that void your warranty? Glad you got it resolved. Sounds like you had a real hardware issue with the parking brake actuator. As a 2017 Bolt owner, I agree with your assessment: I love my car, I love driving my car.
I fully expect this stuff to happen as we are just in the infancy of EVs and not only that, all these computers and high-tech components in cars. Most cars are this way. I am glad they backed their product and gave you the support you needed. I have a Bolt EUV and am just waiting for something to freak out...LOL. We are early adopters of these new technologies.
You should carry a code reader to be able to rest the DTC's. Also, button punches can cause this issue. Press the start button and releaseit. Don't punch it!!!
EV's have been around a long long long time... even "modern" ones have 10+ years (in mass). so, when do you think most of these "bugs" should be worked out? 200 years plus?
@@michaelabsher8341 New gas powered cars still have bugs or bad engines sometimes. It's just a part of mass production of complex things and isn't EV specific.
You handled this as professionally as you could. Thanks for reliving this experience on video as it will give me a point of reference should something like this happen. Love the part of the video 10:55 where the love of the car showed up. lol. Thanks again for the video.
My Ford Maverick freaked out on day and gave me all sort of alarms and went into "limp" mode. It finally cleared itself. It often would give me the "low 12v battery alarm", like 11 times in one day..even after driving. It seems some cars are just not built well...
Last summer the left rear brake actuator on my 2021 Bolt locked up. Dealer provided a rental car and replaced the actuator under warranty. It did take a week for the parts to arrive. With the locked rear wheel I didn't want a flatbed truck and took AAA three tries before they got me a tow truck with wheel dollies.
@@randyk7699 One of the many compromises you get to enjoy with an EV. Wait while charging it. Wait for a tow truck when the car decides you can't drive anymore. Wait for a week to get your car back from the dealership. Walk away and wait until it shuts off and re-boots. Wait until the car fully "boots up" before putting it in gear. The take away for me is the word "wait". So I'll WAIT for several years more before buying an electric car if ever.
I wish every car EV and gasser had a battery disconnect switch. Don't listen to the trolls, I've had an EV for over 3 years, no repairs. We have owned gasers before so we know what it is. No waiting for an oil change, no waiting for smog check, no waiting for timing belt change etc.
@@rp9674 - Yeah, the idea of never having to get a California Smog Check again would be a huge incentive for me to get an EV. I HATE Smog Checks, because of the stress of wondering "what might this cost me to fix if it fails the test?"
I have a Prius Prime PHEV, so half the powertrain is electric, and the car has no less than 11 computers in it that control various systems. Disconnecting the 12 volt battery to force a re-boot is not something I've had to do yet, but it's good to know that this might clear up some issues.
Good tip recommending walking away from the vehicle with your key to get the car to power off. As far as reliability is concerned, I've owned dozens of gas vehicles and can honestly say that they all had mechanical issues at some point. I'm looking forward to fewer issues with my 2020 Bolt !
The week they swapped my battery I had to drive a loaner and buy GAS. It was an expensive week. (300 miles). 2018 did the same thing once, conditions not acceptable to shift. Turned on, off, left in neutral, etc and it worked
This happened to me about 4 months ago. Pulled the 12v negative, waiting for screen to shut off, which it did after about 1-2 minutes. Waiting another couple minutes for good measure and reconnected the negative. It’s been driven another 7,500 mile without issue. What you did was try to shift into a gear before the car was fully turned on. Wait for the vehicle to be fully on before shifting into gear. It will not happen again.
This comment is gold. Many other people had the same problem by shifting it to fast, I really wish there would be a warning message or something to prevent this to happen.
not totally true mine did that to me , i had car running and went inside fast food joint to pick up my food and when i came out i had that issue. Next time it happened the car was off , went for a walk at the park came back tried to start the car same issue. Then took photo of error , made appointment at dealership ( gave them the bulletin number for the supposed fix worked after reprogrammed. Few weeks later guess what ta da same dang thing, so i opened drivers door rolled down window . shut door and car was fine. This has happened twice since software update so now its go to car hope that issue does not pop up drive car. I also use the parking break from time to time and hold foot on brake well before trying to start car so i know its not that. Hopefully this does not become a frequent issue because i have already had others like bad window regulator, front end noise coming from car in cold weather ( fixed that ) now have wind noise from drivers side window at highway speeds ( i know its bad seal around window on outside of car ) other than that car is fun to drive . now its winter time in the midwest hope no more gremlins show up.
Had the same problem yesterday July 4th 2023 can you believe it on a holiday. Car wouldn't shift came up with all kinds of errors went on all the forearms they told me to unplug it and plug it back in and I did that most people said it's your battery has to be your battery I checked my battery voltage and they were correct it was under 10 volts. So I unplugged The battery three times on the final time I waited over 45 minutes reconnected my battery and guess what everything work great check the voltage on my battery it was at 12 volts. But I had to go to California the next day from Las Vegas so what did I do I went over to the Chevy dealer picked up a battery I didn't have time to put it in drove all the way to California with the old battery and I'm talking to you right now it's still working great but I'm still going to put in the new battery because of the voltage that I saw under 10 volts. Everything's working great so far let's Hope for the rest of my trip but I still have a backup battery.
Under 10 volts means your battery was already severely damaged, it's miraculous that it was able to work at all after that. I live in Las Vegas and Las Vegas heat destroys batteries.
I saw this video months ago and a few days ago my brother’s 2022 Bolt EV started doing this without the service engine light. He was stranded several hours. GM’s “Concierge” roadside service sent for a tow truck but couldn’t find one and called back to say they would send one the next morning. Of course, it wasn’t doing it by then so he had to cancel the tow. OnStar couldn’t tell him what was wrong either. Dealer couldn’t find anything wrong. No codes. We did try disconnecting the battery. A quick remove and reinstall didn’t work. A 15 minute removal didn’t work. An hour and a half removal didn’t work, and we took the fob to the other side of town for that one. We tried one more time after vacuuming and washing the car and it just suddenly started working. What gets me is that the dealers don’t already know about this issue even after your experience. It should be in their database. They should also prioritize the vehicles since they need to catch it in the act. Also, the software should have been updated to throw a code when the parking actuator times out if that’s really what causes this. There is no excuse for GM after you have contacted them. Also, there no excuse for a problem like this preventing you from turning it off. That’s a logic problem that absolutely must be fixed.
Good video! Like an ICE vehicle has never had a problem...the reality is it has nothing to do EV vs ICE....any vehicle can have a breakdown. No biggie! Thanks for doing the video! Mike 🇨🇦 🍁
Hoovie had a similar problem when a "Brake Part" failed and would not allow his Lambo to go into gear. Brake Actuator? I'm interested in getting an ev, but with these kind of issues even in newer cars, i'm really hesitant. I have been a nissan and toyota gas vehicle owner for many years and haven't experienced this kind of complete failure, that would prevent me from driving the car. Thanks for a great an informative video.
😅 I had an issue w Prius it’s a new trend for some Ev / hybrid cars those brains of the cars go nuts sometimes so much to do at once’s 😂 . I’m glad Chevy helps and thank you for sharing the solutions you found . We never know when can this happen to us or our teens in the future and this helps alot ! Blessings
EVs with all-electronic power and shifters really should have manual parking brakes. Really, everything should. I'm more and more convinced that there needs to be an unhackable, entirely mechanical way to get the car to a stop in the highly unlikely but not completely impossible case of complete catastrophic failure of the electronics while moving.
Chevy Bolts have traditional hydraulic brakes for regular stop and go driving. It’s the parking brake that is electrically operated. I’ve seen electric parking brakes in a Honda Civic (gas) vehicle and Tesla has them. Same with transmission shifters - modern gas vehicles now use electronic transmission shifters (even the ones with a shift lever/knob that looks old style).
well I have a 2020 Bolt EV and I like it a lot except for rhe materials use inside and the recall for the battery fire Hazzard 🔥. So I did get in the repurchase program and I am getting me the Bolt EUV witit is little bigger much better materials inside and I hope no more battery problems. I like your video and I hope I never get any problems like yours.
This happened on my 2020, can't remember what I did. But it wasn't anything major. Just swapped into a 2022 EUV, wife raves about the car. I have put in early notice for the new Equinox(our lease ends in 18 months). ChEVy is rocking with their evolving EV line, I recall the Citation and the fiasco it was, but it was a step to somewhere that we endured.
Thanks for the knowledge share, we can't worry about what trolls will say. Any criticism should be balanced with a compared-to-what & at-what-price standard anyway. A cold restart is the first step for any electronic device. Used to be called a Sony reset in post production. I helped so many people that way & looked like a genius.
I currently have a noise coming from the front end of the car. I heard it 2 weeks from when I pulled out of the dealership. A month into owning the car, we brought it in to be checked. A field technician was dispatched to check out the car because the techs said they haven't dealt with this problem before. I'm not sure I'm wording this right, but was told there could be extra mental rubbing against each other so when it turns it's causing some thump thump thump noise. I was advised to drive it for 2,000 miles and bring it in if it doesn't work. Well, it didn't work and I'll have to bring it in again. I've only had this 2022 bolt for 2 months now. The function of the car is fine but you hear this slight thumping noise while driving. If I turn up the music I can drown it out. Hope they fix it soon, I love my bolt =)
Own a 2022 and 2023 Bolt , both had major issues within the first 2000 miles. The 2022 had the thrust issue error that ended up being towed in. My 2023, while using Super Cruise threw an error, took it to the dealership, and GM took the 2023 away due to a failure in the brake module system. Like you TACS got involved and they were going back and forth for a week. In my issue, it was a loose connector in the front camera that caused the error to be thrown. After contacting GM corporate, they admitted that dealerships do not have enough EV certified reps. Another error thrown by the same car, EV concierge could not find any openings for service for 3 weeks. Had to go 120 miles away to get service. within the 5 day threshold OnStar gave me for the error. My frustration is that this is a 6 year old model of the car, the bugs should be out by now.
One other possibility. I had the 12 volt battery in my Spark EV go bad, one cell, so it was only putting out 10 volts. It would start, but it wouldn't go into any of the "gears" so I couldn't drive it. If this recurrs, it's probably a defective 12 volt battery, just get a new one.
Luke, would you mind looking up your 1LT’s build date on the plate on the driver’s door sill? I’ve got a 2022 1Lt built 07/22 - no problems. My wife’s 2022 Bolt EUV built in the summer of 2021 has the service vehicle light and a transmission module on order but not here yet. It’s been in the service department going on 3 weeks. Love your channel.
Every time I hear a story like this, it just reinforces my hesitation to make the jump. I have zero patience for stuff like this, and having to contend with the automotive equivalent of "did ya try rebooting it?" just is a deal killer for me.
@@MonteLeeMyPOV They used to, but not any more. I haven't had an ICE car leave me stranded for many years. I get in my car, start the engine (every single time, without fail) and off I go. That is my expectation - especially on a brand new, $40,000 car.
@@scottkempton6085No idea what planet you come from, but TH-cam is full of ICE software screwups like these, most of which don't get any view because they are so common. And you can get a Bolt for $20,000 these days. I'm tempted.
I had a problem with my euv where the HCU threw a code for the auxiliary transmission oil pump. A criteria for the code tripping is the computer commanding it above 800 RPM for a set time. I was driving the Bolt in very slow traffic with lots of stops and starts during hot weather, so I believe that to be the culprit. It never tripped the code since, either.
Gotta give GM credit for how they handled the Bolt battery recall. I think the dealerships have only one guy trained to work on EVs. They have a lot more monkeys to service I.C.E. vehicles. So the built in queue for EV repairs is already longer. My personal experience with a 2017 Bolt recall & a service camera in the shop that I could watch.
Here I am back watching your very interesting And very Informative videos. So just as was about convinced that one Never has a problem with an EV, you had a problem and candid enough to report it. Thanks! This is so ironic because I’ve been starting to think of an EV as a computer on wheels. Then your problem And the Solution appeared to be the very thing that you need to do to a computer when it locks up namely CTRL-ALT-DELETE. And your user group solution of disconnecting the 12 volt seems to be solution. Like you, I won’t want to mass around with car when I should just bring it to the dealer But if or when this happens I might be willing to try the battery disconnect trick. Many Thanks!😊
The Bolt was still on. I feel removing the 12V battery connection when it was still on would NOT have reset the car. The 12V charge inverter was supplying 12V power to the car, not the battery.
How did he push the car as you stated? If it was in gear/Park and would not change into another gear, then it seems that the car would not go into Neutral to allow it to move. I have a 2022 Bolt EV and this worries me somewhat. I need to understand my options when this crap happens. The Bolt is still awesome IMO.
Thanks for this level of detail. My wife just called me this morning saying that she wasn't able to start our EUV with the "conditions not correct for shift". I was able to talk her through the power off with the foot off the brake and then power back on (which worked) but I'm really glad to know your process in case it happens again. Our EUV is exactly 2 months old with about 2600 miles on it, so it is disappointing to have an error already. I work in IT... "recalibrate the system" sounds a whole lot like some softer way of saying "we did a factory reset, twice", or some other kind of BS answer that ultimately means "We don't know why it happened or how it got fixed, but it seems to be working now". Has this fix "stuck"? Have you had any other issues or needed additional fixes since this happened last October?
I have a new 2022 Bolt EUV which died in my driveway. 12v battery died a week after buying. OnStar texted me saying car has battery defect so I had it towed to dealer. Fixed with new 12v battery. Also regarding comment about no regen if fully charged, my other ev, a Volt, fully charged at home will regen about 25% more going down a long hill
What you experienced is the half-assed diagnostics system that Chevy (LG) implemented on this vehicle. There's zero chance that you would not get faults set after an EPB or brake system malfunction. This is similar to the previous model's penchant for turning itself off while driving on the freeway because the system became spooked by a battery issue. The diagnostics system was lacking inhibitions at that time and is probably lacking inhibitions in your case. It all boils down to Chevy being Chevy (cheap) and sticking LG with the development of this vehicle. All in all, it's a great little car. I've owned two and really liked driving them. However, you are still dealing with Chevy. Next time, just pull the negative and be done with it.
Based on what I've heard about the ADS software "recall", that was one of the symptoms. I don't know if the actuator stopped you or not -- it was obviously bad -- but I think the software update resolved the core issue. I had my 2019 Bolt updated as soon as I could, before I ran into problems, so it's anyone's guess at this point. Let us know if it happens again!
Thanks for the posting. I have been driving a Bolt for more than three years. It was mostly pleasant experience. I do agree that it appears GM dealership has some worker training to do. Last time the car needs software upgrade, the service coordinator told me that she had only one "Bolt tech" and I had to wait for two weeks. If the car is broken, that could be a problem.
I have dcalled Onstar and since GM said they would not be replacing any vehicles or changing the batteries, Onstar has told me the diagnostics are all good, and I think they are no longer telling you anything on purpose.
Stuck actuator or faulty will probably lot allow the car to move .rear brakes or push onto rotors ,but how did you guys where able roll car onto tow truck?
It would be helpful if you state year and mileage of the car. I think all the vehicles with regen ability have complicate ABS system. My 2011 prius with 81K miles won't brake properly and I ended up have to replace both the actuator and brake accumulator, dealer quoted for more than $3000 and independent shop quoted for more than $2000. I ended up buy the parts from dealer online, replaced myself and had the mechanic with scanner to bleed the brake with actuator replacement option.
Question: If you hadn't been the "squeaky wheel" online/social media, would you have gotten the same results? Great car and value, but service needs to be better. GM needs to work with and get dealerships to hire more people to reduce delays and or provide you with a car in the interim.
I didn’t upload the video until the issue had been resolved, and I also don’t think my channel is big enough for GM to even know it exists. So, yes, I think results would be the same.
Coming from a toyota camry, how is the reliability of the bolt? It's one of the biggest reasons I'm waiting on buying an EV, but my next vehicle is not going to be ICE, maybe a PHEV, but highly unlikely...
I have a 2004 Toyota Sienna minivan, runs perfect, BUT, its 20 years old, and I really like the Bolt, I like the size, the range. Now I hear Chevy will discontinue it.
Bolt EV/EUV Full message "Service Transmission soon, Unable to shift" or "Service Transmission Now, Unable to shift soon" GM Fix: Service Update number: 22-NA-139. I was able to drive to the dealer. They fixed it within an hour or so.
Bolt’s are known to be unreliable. Check out the Consumer Reports for example. They have always been rated much below average reliability. But that is not the case for EV’s in general at all.
I have a question about the efficiency: Is your 3.7 mi/kw-hr representative of mostly freeway driving? Does the car do better, maybe 6~7 mi/kw-hr, on city streets at slower speeds? I am questioning the reasons you were given for replacing the parking brake actuator. The car is so new that that part should not have failed so soon. Did you ever find out exactly what the fault was?
That figure represents mostly freeway. The dealer replaced the actuator, but I think the problem was caused by my shifting too soon. I’ve put 7,000 trouble free miles on the since.
That is a beautiful car. Love the tint job. I am so torn I started looking at buying an EUV but was told this was the last year and seen the Equinox, so tempted to wait for that. Also looked at the Kona which I found peppier, then the Bolt. Have you test drove the Kona? I LOVE the color of yours.
I have a 2021 bolt but my mom has hybrid and destroyed 4 transmission and all have to come from to Korea. But now she has to wait for the 5 transmission.
Same thing happened to my 2022 bolt ev . I was trying to charge and the lithium ion battery warning came in and it wasn't allowing me to charge. OnStar sent me a message about the warning and told me to take the car to a service dealer ASAP . Chevrolet dealer had my car for two weeks because I'm there part the car was not showing anything wrong with it. So I did the same thing showed them a video of the warning light and my on star warning email. They kept my car for another week until they decided I needed a software update and now I'm not getting my 259 miles of range. Since it's a 2022 I won't get my 259 miles of range anymore until the 2017-2019 models get there batteries fixed. It's a great little car to drive but there is something wrong for sure with the cars becuase now my front windshield camera is acting up. Braking on me for pedestrian when there's no pedestrian and I also have the gear shit problem but only when I go to the car to wash place .
Hello, the same exact issue just happened to me 2 days ago. I wish I saw this video and tried to disconnect the battery. I was able to get it into drive and drive it to the dealership. The ev tech is out of town and can not diagnose the issue untill monday. I went to the dealership yesterday and turned the car on. The service engine light was still on. My bolt is a 2021 with only 25k miles on it. It is now out of warranty.I haven't been to this dealership before and am worried they will try to rip me off. It drove fine but the service light is still on. Do you have any advice on what I can do to keep from getting scamed? Should I ask for the faulty parts is they have to replace them. I did have the new battery replaced under the recall last year. This is the first issue that I have had. Thank for your help.
You should still have warranty at 25k miles, unless I’m missing something. The car should have a 36k mile bumper to bumper warranty and if it’s a replaced battery from the recall it should have a full 8 yr 100k warranty from the time it was replaced. You can also call the GM EV concierge at 833-EVCHEVY
It's a 2021 so I believe the warranty may have ended. I think it is 3 years or 36k or whatever comes first. I believe the 8 year 100k warranty only applies to the battery? I'm pretty much having the same issued you had in that video. Do you think that would be covered in that 8 year 100k warranty.
@@SpinnerEV Hello, just got my bolt back from the dealership. The service order says the transmission range control module was bad and it was replaced free of charge.
let me guess before proceed, 12v battery issue? if it was not, I do wonder how does a EV car maintain its 12v battery? there is no alternator isn't it?
All cars have issues, both EVs and ICE cars, especially nowadays, as so many ICE cars are basically computers on wheels. With that said, this is yet one more reason to buy a Tesla if you're buying an EV. They've simply done it longer and have ironed out more of the kinks. But with that said, I saw in your other video why you chose the Bolt instead, and your reasoning is sound. Good luck and good video.
I saw that other video too...The $20,000 price difference between the Tesla and the Bolt is hard to argue with. Plus, there are THOUSANDS of GM dealerships in the US, compared to only 168 Service Centers for Tesla. If you are on a road trip and your Bolt breaks down, there are likely more GM dealerships in the lowest population states like North Dakota, than there are Tesla Service Centers in the whole country.
I’ve learned that some call that a “sleep cycle.” Basically the equivalent of fixing a computer by turning off and back on.
You are a very patient man. One day I think I will buy a Bolt. I presently have a Dodge Neon that I am nudging along for as long as I can. I don't drive much as I am retired. But I do admire your attitude.
Thanks for all the details, especially the 'how to fix it' and 'how to avoid it' bits.
As for EVs, I agree, they're not as simple as people think.
pos gm yall need to wake up and stop buying gm
One of my take aways from this is to refer to the Bolt forum (or your particular car forum) for problems and simple fixes. Also videos like this.
Agreed
We could have had EVs 20 years earlier if it weren't for the dealers. They know EVs rarely break down.
Thanks for the info I have a 2023 bolt EUV Premier and I absolutely love it
My emergency brake also got stuck on before. Dealer had it a couple days before they found and fixed it.
You were very nice in dealing with the whole affair. Def more patient than I worked have been.
A tin foil hat for the key fob? Wow.
The 12 volt battery thing saved me when I couldn't plug the car in with our J1772. It's totally safe to do.
Good to know.
Thank you good to know as well^
Loving my 22 Bolt EUV. Thanks for the information!
Thanks for sharing the very useful info. Have a great day!
I’m thinking about buying a bolt. Thanks for the video.
It all worked out in the end. I’ve had another 5000 trouble free miles since then.
Thank you. I now have a 10mm wrench in the glove box, and the next time I get a recall for software update I will not put it off. One thought, if you live in an area where the parking brake is not used much, I'd exercise it every so often.
I never use my parking brake- but I might start "exercising" it every now and then.
@@handsoffanomaly7 If you've never used it. You might want to wait till you have time to fix it or you're at a garage. It may not release.
Like you, I have a Bolt, and I love it. The thing I prefer is to be able to coast, so especially I like that regen paddle on the steering wheel.
I'm 95, and hearing stories like this scares me. I repaired cars since when I was 16, but I'm a babe in the woods when it comes to the modern car.
You did the right thing! I keep reading and watching vids and Chevy just doesn't have it together! Not jumping on the boat soon.
Thanks for posting your story.
Hope it helps someone
Yes, disconnect the 12V battery. Why would that void your warranty? Glad you got it resolved. Sounds like you had a real hardware issue with the parking brake actuator. As a 2017 Bolt owner, I agree with your assessment: I love my car, I love driving my car.
It wouldn’t. But the tow truck had already been called. I regretted it, but it is what it is.
Picked one up last week
This isn't just in electric cars, many gas cars have many onboard computers that will self diagnose and disable the car if it detects faults.
Love the color. Hope you got it worked out.
Thanks! It’s all good now.
This happened to my Bolt at about 24K miles. Disconnecting the negative 12V cable restored function. I now carry a 10mm wrench everywhere I go.
Sad...that you have to carry a wrench with your car.
After the fact, I’ve seen the warning, “initializing wait for shift.” Blink and you’ll miss it, but it shows up after pushing the power button.
not totally true mine did that to me , i had car running and went inside fast food joint to pick up my food and when i came out i had that issue.
You don't have to walk away 100 feet, just get an RFID signal blocking pouch for your key.

Hoovie had a similar problem when a "Brake Part" failed and would not allow his Lambo to go into gear. Brake Actuator? If the car doesn't recognize that the brake pedal is being pressed, the car won't start.

I have a 19 Cruze LS I bought new and I’ve had zero issues. Only 29K miles. A regular car without all the high tech stuff. Good luck.
Good video, very informative. I’m surprised on store could not tell you how to power off your car.
I have seen several people have similar issue with the new corvettes.
So definitely not just the Ev issue.
Blessings
thanks for the really good advice
A brand new car needed a software update. A brand new part failed. Sounds about right.
My fiat 500e EV has a manual parking brake, primitive butt fail safe. All cars have hydraulic braking that works with the power off.
I hope they get it fixed for you, too.
Mine has a July ‘22 build date according to the sticker.
Interesting thanks for the info.
Very informative thanks
Yes very helpful especially when I could be a future Bolt owner
Thanks! You should know the problem was fixed and likely caused by me. Haven’t had a problem since.
Every time I hear a story like this, it just reinforces my hesitation to make the jump. I have zero patience for stuff like this, and having to contend with the automotive equivalent of "did ya try rebooting it?" just is a deal killer for me.
Gas cars do it all day long
@@MonteLeeMyPOV They used to, but not any more. I haven't had an ICE car leave me stranded for many years. I get in my car, start the engine (every single time, without fail) and off I go. That is my expectation - especially on a brand new, $40,000 car.
Sounds like you've got your excuse to be selfish.

Transmission?
@@franklofarojr.2969 The drive unit is also called the transmission on account of the gears
EVs may have the hardware but they 100% operate by software. GM’s software seems like MS windows 3.1 of old. Good luck!
I dunno about all that
Gotta give GM credit for how they handled the Bolt battery recall. I think the dealerships have only one guy trained to work on EVs. They have a lot more monkeys to service I.C.E. vehicles. So the built in queue for EV repairs is already longer. My personal experience with a 2017 Bolt recall & a service camera in the shop that I could watch.
Thanks for your help
Good point, it seems like when the contactors are on it's running off the big battery
The car would shift into neutral. Just not reverse or drive.
It has stuck
Great info!!
Thank you!
Let us know if it happens again!
and he only had to walk away from it to make it shut down and he could have kept his car but nope he had to do it the hard way🤣
Thanks for the posting.
Oh no! It happens, my clutch exploded driving to Santa Barbara in the middle of nowhere - any car can break down =)
Thank you very helpful video. I was thinking about getting one of these since it’s very cheap as a second car but I will stay with tesla.
I have dcalled Onstar and since GM said they would not be replacing any vehicles or changing the batteries, Onstar has told me the diagnostics are all good, and I think they are no longer telling you anything on purpose.
Did the vehicle roll OK when being winched onto the flat-bed? I have heard that the drive-wheels may lock-up.
It rolled fine
Stuck actuator or faulty will probably lot allow the car to move .rear brakes or push onto rotors ,but how did you guys where able roll car onto tow truck?
It rolled easily. Brakes weren’t locked
This happened to me today but it resolved itself...I thought I was doing something wrong because I just bought the car last night.
Everything work out?
@@SpinnerEV yeah, hasn't happened again
It would be helpful if you state year and mileage of the car. I think all the vehicles with regen ability have complicate ABS system. My 2011 prius with 81K miles won't brake properly and I ended up have to replace both the actuator and brake accumulator, dealer quoted for more than $3000 and independent shop quoted for more than $2000. I ended up buy the parts from dealer online, replaced myself and had the mechanic with scanner to bleed the brake with actuator replacement option.
This is a 2022. At the time it had 5000 miles, but this was likely operator error
Is that how the windows come out of the factory or did you have them tinted?
From the dealership
Thanks for the vid
I know what the car feels like. I don't know what's going on anymore either.
Actually, that's about the best outcome you can expect from the dealer. Be happy with it...
Agreed
That is a nice-looking car. I wish the dealers were not so greedy.
So, yes, I think results would be the same.
same thing happen to me in my bolt ev 2023 i just keep pressing power off like 25 times and it shut off. after everything was fine..
Coming from a toyota camry, how is the reliability of the bolt? It's one of the biggest reasons I'm waiting on buying an EV, but my next vehicle is not going to be ICE, maybe a PHEV, but highly unlikely...
I’ve had it for less than a year, so I’ll have to get back to you
I have a 2004 Toyota Sienna minivan, runs perfect,

works till it doesn't .
I have not test driven a Kona but the redesign is nice
Can you post the link to your Facebook forum posting? Thanks.

why no loaner car?
Just curious, did you ask the tow guy what he did to shut the car off?
It turned off on its own during the tow.
@@SpinnerEV Do you think you moved far enough from the car to get it turn off on its own?
That’s likely. I learned that trick after the fact. 15000 trouble free miles since this video was published
@tonyb282 I’d recommend the EV concierge then
@@SpinnerEV Hello, just got my bolt back from the dealership. The service order says the transmission range control module was bad and it was replaced free of charge.
@tonyb282 good news!
let me guess before proceed, 12v battery issue? if it was not, I do wonder how does a EV car maintain its 12v battery? there is no alternator isn't it?
I tried to shift the car too quickly and confused the car. I know how to reset it now.
What year model is your Bolt?
2022
