Indie dance house scene late eighties start, bands like Happy Mondays The Charlatans, Inspiral Carpets, James, 808 State, it is a massive rabbit hole chaps roots go everywhere.Job description for that chap, Bez from the Happy Mondays bloke in grey.
@@Euadam It was released in November 1989 - so yes, it was a big groove in the last month and a half of the late 80s, but it really became a massive rave song a few months after it was released.
The Stone Roses evolved from a post-punk sound into an indie/psychedelic/pop vibe which took in elements of rave culture. Their first album is a classic. Ian Brown was always the weak link but his swagger and charisma compensated for his lack of vocal ability.
Liam Gallagher copied Brown's moves and style of dress, so without him we don't have Oasis as we know them. Ian Brown is like Lou Reed. Struggles to stay in tune, but the Roses would not have worked without him. This band is as tight musically as any band ever was.
Ah the song that set me on the path of indie and rock music when I was 16. It was played on the jukebox of a place where I played football and was quickly followed by Dragging me Down by the Inspiral Carpets. I went straight to Our Price and bought them on CD single. Waterfall is still my favourite Roses song.
Stone Rose, Inspiral Carpets, Charlatans, The Farm , Slowdive, Lush, Echobelly, Garbage, Spirea X. Boo Radleys, Flowered Up, Primal Scream etc etc. Those were the days Paul. We were lucky to be around when thses bands came along.
You like the roses you should try out blur's "there's no other way". it's the transition from baggy to britpop. The funny thing about that program is that the host tony wilson is the person who did more to disrupt the early career of the stone roses than any other person because he was managing and putting out the records of the happy mondays, blacklisting them from playing venues etc see the doc blood on the turntable.
The guy in the grey is Cressa the unofficial fifth member, he controlled John Squires FX pedals as they started to get to complicated for a man with only two feet. And he could dance.
Other Side of Midnight is named because it was broadcast after midnight which was considered very late in England in 1989. I was out of work at the time and saw this the first time it was shown. Look out for Performance by Happy Mondays from the same programme. The presenter at the start is Tony Wilson who is so interesting a film called 24 Hour Party People was made about him and the Manchester music scene.
Anthony Wilson Mr Manchester, they named a street after him. He deserved a statue outside gmex facing the Hacienda imo considering his promotion of the city and its music.
The guy introducing it was Tony Wilson. He was behind Factory Records who produced, Joy Division ,New Order, Happy Mondays, O.M.D, plus many many more.
About 25 yrs ago I walked into a bar and this was playing on the duke box. I asked a guy who it was and he said “The Stone Roses.” I’ve practically listened to them everyday since.🍋
I like how you've used Jingle Jangle as the title. Was this by accident? Whenever I hear Jingle Jangle I think of the song Free My Way by Ian Brown. Great reaction guys. Tony Wilson is a Manchester legend. Check out the film 24 Hour Party People
The guy in the grey is Cressa - a friend of the band (and The Happy Mondays) who was one of the first people involved in the introduction of ecstasy to the Manchester scene in the late 80's - hence the funky dancing! 😄
Yeah, Ian Brown only learned to sing in about 2010! Amazing band. They made the 90's sounds with unique stuff like this. Also RIP Tony Wilson. Music God!!
Nice video. On TH-cam, somewhere, is a live television performance the Roses attempted before a studio technical failure; Ian Brown's admonishment of the t.v. crew is good for a laugh. Their interviews with the press are entertaining. :)
Great reaction as always guys. You still need to do “Made Of Stone”! My favourite from that debut album. Also, “Breaking Into Heaven” is a mega track from the second album. One of the greatest guitar solos from John Squire in that one. The guy in grey is called Cressa. He didn’t do much apart from dance, and I don’t think he was an official member. On the other hand, the band Happy Mondays (who you have reacted to, and we’re The Roses’ Madchester peers) had an even more crazy dancer guy, called Bez. He was actually an official member, and pretty much summed up Happy Mondays. You should do more Mondays, their tracks “Loose Fit” and “Mad Cyril” and “24 Hour Party People” are great, and would make a great reaction!
To get a real understanding of what they were all about you HAVE to watch the 16 min interview with John Squire and Ian Brown. Its a must watch!!!! Also check out Mersey Paradise , Ten Story love song , Tears and Elephant stone. You will be blown away!!!
Tony Wilson (the guy introducing them) mentions that he didn't really like The Stone Roses for 5-6 years until this track from 89. This was largely due to the Roses early stuff lacking in direction and their sound wasn't really good and songs were a little all over the place. As a result they weren't that well known outside of Manchester (where Tony "Mr Manchester" Wilson is from, and he knew the local scene very well, see 24 Hour Party People and Factory Records). However, this all changed when Mani joined the band and brought his influences in and added much needed harmony to the tracks they were doing.
He didnt like them because they were originally signed to thin line records which was owned by the former label manager of factory records and martin hannett who was the former in house producer for factory and a partner in the company. Basically he tried to sabotage the roses due to their involvement with his ex business partners!
a must reaction to Spike Milligan - Grovelling Bastard, I must have seen Spike's acceptance speach a dozen times and it still makes me cry with laughter. He was one of Britians funniest ever men.

This was 90s Britain being invented lol. Not surprising that Ian's vocal is so low, he was a NIGHTMARE for sound engineers, always criticising, complaining and falling out with them so it was probably deliberate 😆 The long outro was originally just a freeform jam at the end of one of the takes in the studio that ended up being kept in.
