Surprised that The Beautiful South weren't on this list. Their greatest hits (at the time) compilation Carry On Up The Charts was in something ridiculous like 1 in 7 UK households when it came out in the 90s, but as far as I'm aware they never had a hit in the US.
Brilliant band. Great songs. I was in Asda recently and Perfect ten was played through the speakers. I thought I bet they don't know what this song is about 😅

Carry On Up The Charts is in my Top 100 albums. Paul Heaton is one of those old fashioned musicians who makes music because he loves making music.

Wow, the fact you didn't even react when they mentioned Robbie Williams has blown my mind. Every mum or auntie in the UK has had a Robbie Williams calendar in their kitchen at some point. He's probably the biggest solo pop star in the UK since the millennium (expect perhaps Adele & Sheeran).
For scale, he sold out Knebworth for 3 nights at 125,000 capacity per night.
Not to mention he is the youngest solo artist to sell over 50 million in Europe.
Plus he was 8th best selling artist in the world 2000-2010. Proof you don’t need America to be successful.
It's incredible! Robbie was THE number one male pop star here in Germany for years when I was growing up! EVERYBODY knows Robbie Williams, it's just so bizarre to realise he's so unknown in the US haha!

Robbie Williams was an entertainer by his own admission and had a bang average voice. He got record crowds in the UK but he shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as genuine great rock bands.

You Guys really need to listen to Suede, the band that sparked a cultural movement that became Britpop. They truly are a band of a Generation and even today they are producing great material. Look for their comeback gig at the Royal Albert Hall, one of the greatest gigs, the standing ovation after Metal Mickey was Goosebumps a real I was there moment.

Went to see Travis a few weeks ago in my hometown (Invisible Band tour)…I know they’re touring the States in the next few weeks/months? Also went to see them do The Man Who tour which was brill so anyone in the US with tix you’re in for a great gig.

Goldfrapp have done pretty well in the US, 5 US dance chart number 1s, including Strict Machine, and 4 top 10 hits in the main chart.
The Manic Street Preachers are my favourite band of all time. I know that doesn't add anything to the conversation, but I'm always glad to see them!
Check out The Divine Comedy, from Northern Ireland. "National Express", their biggest hit, is a natural starting point. A quintessential part of the Britpop wave in the mid-90s.

Having read quite a few of the comments I am totally amazed that nobody has mentioned the mighty Status Quo. Love them or hate them there is no denying their pull power as nobody has had more UK chart singles in history (more than 60) and an incredible 25 top ten albums. They may not be the most original band around but their foot tapping rhythm machine churns on and on. Check them out.
Man I love Supergrass. Their second album got me through school in the early 2000s (even though it released in the mid 90s). Such an underrated band. Gaz Coombes is a seriously talented musician.

Try checking out a Scottish band called Texas - Inner Smile, Say what you want, I don’t want a lover, & their cover of across the universe. It might not be the kind of music you usually listen to, but I used to enjoy it back in the day😀

What a band
Sad what happened to Richey Edwards, the guitarist from Manic Street Preachers. They found his car abandoned near a bridge and he was never seen again. Nobody knows what really happened to him.
I read that they kept his royalties in an account in case he showed up one day.
The essential fact is that to continue living, even to the age of 54, which he would be now, he would have had to have access to his earnings or any other money and there has never been evidence that has been the case. However much people want to make some delicious eternal mystery of it, the guy is dead. Bless the fellow.

Rumour was he entered a monastery but the monks refuse to answer whether he is there or not

The clash are one of the biggest and most influential bands of all time they essentially helped push forward and entire genre of music in “punk” music. They used to support the sex pistols who originated it and the clash moved it forward into a progressive scene
They were massive in the states. Most USA rock bands sight them as an influence
Clash were the bollocks. Was always a Jam nut but after listening to the Clash they're just as good.

The Jam and subsequently Paul Weller absolutely deserve world wide recognition.

The Jam is always on my playlist 👍
I never really liked Supergrass but they did provide me with one of my favourite memories. 17 years old, first night out with my new college friends. We all met up at a bar called Berlins which was pretty big and as the evening wore on and we all got drunk on alco-pops and cheap (terrible) lager there were about 400-500 people crammed into the place as Supergrass's 'Alright' came on the speakers and suddenly everyone had their arms across each other shoulders and everyone was swaying as 90% of the people in the bar spontaneously started singing "We are young, we run green, keep our teeth nice and clean, see our friends, see the sights, feel alright". A fantasic feeling of love and hope for the future that only the naivety of youth and copious amounts of alcohol can provide.
And then Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' came on immediately afterwards and the entire place went completely apeshit. 😄
A band that always gets overlooked is Ultravox. they were big in the 80's and leaders in electro pop/rock. Their lead singer co wrote the charity song Do They Know Its Christmas with Bob Geldoff. Their debut single Vienna got to number 2 but they consistantly hit the top ten with others such as 'the Voice', Dancing with tears in my Eyes and my favorite Hymn
During a lecture whilst studying for my degree we were doing some really complicated stuff proving Mach numbers from first principles. this involved dotting and swirling vectors.
I heard the guy next to me humming it was a while before I recognised it as "Vienna" . When he got to "this means nothing to me" everybody in the lecture broke into song and even the lecturer burst out laughing.
Also love "If I was"....although could have been a solo thing of Midge Ure? Anyway, good song.
You really should try more Happy Mondays tracks. During their time they were seen as dangerous & unpredictable characters who were often in the press for their rock & roll behaviour. Their music was a unique blend of punk, funk, dance and soul and were pioneers of the rave/ guitar music crossover

I am so surprised especially Take That O.M.G. Manics I designed for her life is an anthem u have no idea what u have missed brits ruled back then so much talent I’m so proud of our music industry 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
There are loads more if you go back in time. The Troggs whose tune Wild Thing even Hendrix covered and the Small Faces whose track Tin Soldier is brilliant and in the seventies there was Dr Feelgood, Ian Dury and T.Rex. There’s loads more but Nick Drake is the classic because even we ignored him. His track Northern Sky is genius level.
For me SLADE is definitely number 1 for me maybe its bias because i grew up listening to them with my grandad and have lots of memories atatched to them including the first time i got high 😂 and they were from the blackcountry (my local area) but theyre honestly one of the best bands of all time IMO
Ah man, Stereophonics have a special place in my heart. One of the bands that seemed to hit different for me.
I cant believe Stereophonics arnt big everywhere, it's literally made for stadia music.

I love them. Seen them live 11 times now and will never get bored of doing so, they always smash it out the park and Kelly's voice is incredible. Their gig at Cardiff City's stadium in 2016 was absolutely epic

Watched the Stereophonics this weekend supporting Pearl Jam in London. They were great.

I love Ash and Free All Angels was great (And Burn Baby burn is a single from it), but surely got to start with something from 1977 - Girl From Mars/ Kung Fu / Goldfinger / Angel Interceptor / Oh Yeah.
I grew up watching Madness on TV but never got to see them live until recently at a horse racing meeting. They are still touring and despite being much older like myself, they are able to rock it!!!

Also, I've previously mentioned Pink Flag by Wire as a seminal UK album from that generation.
They *really* did influence a lot of bands, and took Elastica to court for using a complete copy of their Three Girl Rhumba riff.
ps. Elastica settled out of court and rewrote the credits.

Two of my friends did the initial recording of The Stone Roses' album 'Second Coming' (RIP Mark Tollerton)
Madness is a good shout. Their sound inspired No Doubt and Gwen Stefani, but they were too underground for the US
The Manics could have been huge in the States... They had the image of the New york Dolls,
The attitude of The Stooges or The Ramones but could also write killer tunes taking inspiration from Hanoi Rocks and even Rush...
I saw them once before Richie disappeared and they were an awesome force to be reckoned with 🖤🖤🤘🏻🤘🏻
Such an amazing band with yes an American sound, ironically they became more popular in the UK when they went less heavy rock.

The problem is the size difference in the two countries...
A good American band can easily saturate the British market as the whole island is only the size of one US state the reverse is a hard thing to do...
Rock music in the states is something you can listen to 24/7 as every city has its own rock radio stations which would have suited their style perfectly in the early days but even with that it takes some doing to spread that sound over the entire continent.... Considering we invented heavy metal the UK radio and TV stations have always scorned it and pushed it to one side knowing full well it has a huge fan base.... Its not something that conforms to the straight laced British standards
@@markmurray2235 yeh fair comment Mark, I also think the Manic’s embraced their whole rebels persona (‘You Love Us’) which also gave them a huge loyal fan base (which they still have) wearing balaclavas on top of the pops, richey carving 4 REAL into his arm, singing about Lennon getting shot, singing about murders and the slogans they worse on their shirts - they tried hard early doors not to be embraced and certain people loved it but yes not for the masses or the classes.

I never liked Take That when they were originally around but I really like their stuff since their comeback. As for the member that left (& came back for a bit), Robbie Williams, you may know his song Angels.

Robbie's new version of Angels is extremely good. His voice has matured and has a richness too it.

Yeah, I'm a prog rocker and their comeback was full of first class songs and after dismissing Robbie Williams as a talentless big head I've recently had a fresh look at his stuff and owe him an apology, his hits are incredible pop songs and he deserved every bit of his fame and success. I'm a lot happier in my musical self since I shed the snobbery and it helps with my own song writing to have a wide canvas.

I can only remember one album if I'm honest, some great tunes on there though.
Robbie Williams of Take That recorded the song used in the credits of Finding Nemo, by the way. As a racing fan and channel you guys might like the video to his song SUPREME, which has Robbie taking the place of a 1970s F1 driver.

Their main claim to fame is they opened Live Aid. Geldof wanted a big name band to get Live Aid going.
A strange list considering there's no Quo but they've included Take That who were only a boy and on the list with all those proper bands.
If the guys are looking for a real leftfield pick I'd recommend The The. They were possibly the seminal underground band of the 80s and 90s. Matt Johnson was the main man and was a brilliant songwriter. Check out the Infected album. It's a glorious collection of songs and was the album that got me into The The.
They are bloody brilliant is there other claim to fame.
Madness had a unique English sound, i love them but not surprised they didn't crack America

Loved there set at Glastonbury this year… it’s on bbciplayer now I think…Gaz still has a hell of a vocal range and they sounded awesome… could have benefitted from a later slot and a livelier crowd mind 😂

They were huge back in the 70's and 80's but never made it in America. Made it every else though. You should give them a listen. They are still going now.

Nah, a 55 year career, 115,000,000 records sold and they only had 57 top 40 hits. Why would anyone think they were a big band.

Down in the tub station at midnight is a lyrical masterpiece by the jam. Slade should be on this list 100%. Was a supergroup in the 70s and had the best rock Christmas song ever🤟😁. It's a shame you have not heard it over there so much. Not Christmas without it😭
Would love to see you guys do a full review of - The Stone Roses the same way you did the Liam Gallagher one. It’s one one the culture defining albums of the last 30 years. Nowadays bands make tracks not albums. Be great to see what you think…

Pre internet days - meant that loads of bands from here ( UK) didn’t cross the pond , the huge amount of talented bands ( especially 70/80s) went under the radar even within Britain , you guys need to check out the Brit punk/post punk era - sum fantastic bands/sounds ( which gems I’m still discovering even now) noteworthy = the damned- joy division - xtc- the fall- wire-magazine-the sound-the stranglers ( a personal favourite) - the chameleons- gang of four-the Jesus and Mary chain - buzzcocks- jags- the cure- squeeze- ECT, loads more to many to many list .

All of the bands listed deserved a breakthrough and are worth a listen
Me and hubby went to see Madness a few weeks ago in Spain (Murcia bullring) although we were never huge fans, more really a case of 'what's not to like, they're nearby, let's go' we did. Absolutely brilliant night. My fb cover photo was of the stage until yesterday when I changed it back.

Would you consider ever doing a full album review session, start with the stone roses and work through an album from each in the top ten.

Good list, but it seems to concentrate on bands (mostly) from 1980 to about 2005.
So it misses out The Kinks, which is a huge miss.
And I know he's an individual, not a band, but I think America is missing out by not picking up on Paolo Nutini.

Showing my age a bit but you don't see bands like Status Quo on these types of lists, with album sales of around 120M you might think they'd get an "honourable mention" !

Been watching since your first videos and I’ve been wanting you to check out the Lightning seeds. Either Marvellous or Perfect or Life of Riley the studio versions. Really interesting band from Liverpool, UK from the 90’s.

KASABIAN is my all time favourite band, I cannot believe they didn’t take the USA by storm 😟 Ever heard of the STRANGLERS, huge band in the late 70s and early 80s... Golden Brown, Heroes, Hanging around, Peaches, always the sun , just a few hits to mention 🤔
There are a lot of excellent bands that haven't crossed to the US just like there are loads of US bands that aren't known here. Although we do have country music over here it certainly doesn't have the popularity that it does in the US for example. I would say Biffy Clyro, Franz ferdinand, the coral, catfish and the bottlemen, the Vaccines are all good but not recognisable names in the US
And Deacon Blue, brilliant live...
Listened to a lot of Franz Ferdinand lately.
The TV show Loudermilk has A LOT of great music in it and they use them a lot.
Also, to sum up your point. Indie isn't big in the US it seems.
That's an awesome list, love Biffy Clyro and Catfish, also Franz Ferdinand but it's been a while since I listened to them, must rectify.
I think a lot of The 90’s bands didn’t make the crossover because of the grunge scene.
Look at Bush English Band small Fanbase in the UK in The 90’s but had way more success in America than The UK because they’re music more marketable over in The US whereas they’re weren’t cracking the UK during The 90’s because of The Britpop scene.
Have had not only the privilege to grow up with these bands, but see some in concert.
Top bands in that mix.
I would deffo give The Ruts Babylon burning a go! Also I can recommend Julian Cope and a song called Hanging out and hung up on the line
I'm just remembering that when I was tiny, I didn't understand the name 'New Kids on the Block.' I'm from England, so I'd never heard of a location called a 'block' before, the only time I'd heard about someone being 'on the block' before was guillotine executions, so it was like... 'New Kids on the Chopping Block.' Then came the confusion of why the kids were 'new' - maybe newly born kids? Babies on the chopping block about to get their heads cut off? Then I figured that must be it, and so it was a metaphor for how bands die out quickly. It was making a statement: "We're brand new musicians and we'll be killed off by the music industry any second now."
That was legitimately what I thought when I was around 8 or 9 years old or so.
Where I live in Liverpool, I grew up with 'on the block' being the same as 'on the game' (street walking/ prostitution) 😆. I don't know how common that was, but that's what I heard said by ours.
I thought the backstreet boys were homosexuals and backstreet meant up the arse

The store roses second album " the second coming " is well worth a reaction boys its slightly more commercial if that's the right word but it's feckin epic

When i visited America about 25 years ago, Love Spreads ny Stone Roses was always on the radio
Most people in UK who like Maximo Park, like their 1st 2 albums 'A Certain Trigger' 2004 and Our Earthly Pleasures 2006, which are both post Punk masterpieces. But I reckon you can't go past their next 2 albums 'Quicken the Heart' 2008 and 'The National Health' 2011, for pure unadulterated hook-laden melody, angst and drama. Very very underrated band!
