I was there, standing just to the left of centre stage, a third of the way back toward the mixing desk. One of the most iconic moments, as the sun was beginning to go down, was everyone clapping in unison to Radio Gaga. Freddie was in his pomp and Queen blew everyone away. It's a day I'll never forget.

I always say something about that, it wasn't a Queen audience per say but, everyone is a Queen fan they don't even know it. Everyone knows, We Will Rock you, it is played in every stadium around the world, same with We Are The Champions. Their music is ingrained in the culture of music. Freddie by far is the greatest front man of all time, in my opinion.
Remember this wasn’t a Queen audience. Tickets for Live Aid sold out months before and Queen only confirmed they were appearing a couple of days prior to the performance. Despite this every member of the audience knew the words to every Queen song and it’s universally acknowledged that they stole the show. Fantastic performance.

He needed Roger a bit more in this concert due to laryngitis. He went on against doctor's orders and said later it was like gargling with broken glass. Not that you'd notice, what a star - and yet ...
Did you see him get tangled in the microphone cable during Hammer to Fall? It's after he plays with the camera. He looks behind twice, seeing it's trapped behind him and catches it with his hand while singing to prevent it being pulled too tight/unplugged. Doesn't bat an eyelid and then laughs along with the cameraman at the end. So generous and unstarry. Many others would have wiped through floor with him for less.

Roger Taylor never gets the credit he deserves and was always the guy they fell back on to cover when Freddie was struggling vocally.
Freddie had tonsillitis,and was advised not to go on.But,he refused to let down the charity.He was such a good man.

It wasn't really a 'comeback' anywhere other than in the US. Quen ,remained hugely popular in the UK and around the World, throughout their career. It was only in the US that their popularity had fallen. Mainly due to them dressing up as female characters from a British soap opera, in the video for 'I Want to Break Free'. That upset America's macho sensibilities, lol. :)

@@kyleregan9879 Eh??? Queen split up before Live Aid? Er, where did you get that from? I was a massive Queen fan as a kid and I have never heard that before. A quick biog check will show you they didn't split up, and Freddie was diagnosed in 1987, 2 years AFTER Live Aid.

No massive lightshow. No backup dancers or costum changes. No pyrotechnics. Just 4 masterful musicians practicing their craft and making an entire stadum, hell the entire world lose their minds.
No other frontman in the history of British rock music ever had such charisma to charm his audience like Freddie Mercury could.

Watched Live Aid, live on TV - a hot day, everyone had windows and doors open - a whole street thrumming with Queen - a nation singing along with Wembley! I am now in my 70s and I am proud to say I have grand-children and great grand-children who are Queen fans - Freddie Mercury, eternal star. 😎

I too was there, I'm 64 now....how the f*** did that happen. My ex was a cameraman I was stage right watching with other crew, it was utter pandemonium back there. I was there for Bowie...no other...Queen were kind of old hat(can't believe I'm saying that now) the performance over ran, was astonishing and I've been a huge Queen fan ever since. I'll never forget the way Freddie held that audience...bloody marvellous. I be met Roger a few times he's a great bloke and could have been a fantastic star on his own....great guys and Freddie...there are no words other than genius.

Queen didn't over run. They rehearsed for days in a room full of clocks to get the timing right.
Freddie wrote "crazy little thing called love" whilst taking a bath,it was a song written because of Freddie's love for Elvis Presley.
Something pretty funny about the song, Brian was drunk one night and was watching TH-cam and found an Elvis impersonator singing Crazy Little Thing called Love and thought ohh I guess it was an Elvis song....... Ha ha ha. I saw Brian tell the story on an interview. The funny thing is if Brian thought Elvis did the song it must of been convincing. LOL
Freddie is the greatest rock front man ever, he owed the wembely crowd that day and Queen stole the show.
My hubby was at Live Aid and said the atmosphere was absolutely unreal. He still gets emotional watching this now. Freddie was a one off ❤️

There is only one beauty in being old like me and that is that I’ve seen this stuff live. Freddie is a legend and I challenge anyone to name anyone better as a musician, singer, songwriter, performer and crowd choreographer. He was perfect live and not many people or bands can say that if they are being honest. RIP Freddie 😪

I was a little girl when I watched this concert on TV. It still gives me goosebumps especially when you have thousands of people doing the gaga clap in unison.

Remember rushing home from work at 19 years of age and watching live aid. Best most iconic concerts in history. Queen stealing the show. The one band I wish I could go back in history and see . 🇬🇧

Doctors advised Freddie not to sing as he had trouble with his voice but he wasn’t not going to perform! Roger really helped him out with fantastic backing. Every band has a precise slot and I think they were over by about 19 secs! What a tight set one of the best ever!
Look for the amber light in front of the monitors switching to red just after the final note of the last song. They were that precise!
Yeah but take out the time it took to walk out and tune up and they pretty much did 20 minutes exactly! 🤯
Freddie had a heavy cold you can see him drinking pints of honey and lemon between songs he was never going to miss this show they actually rehearsed for it so as to be spot on for it

I was there...it was VERY loud...but we didn't care. It was an epic set. A choir of 70,000 sang along...best 20 minutes of the entire concert.
I heard a story that one of Queens crew sabotaged the amps and turned up the volume for Queen coming on stage.

I remember this like it was yesterday. I pulled an armchair in front of the TV, instructed my parents to not disturb me, and didn't move for 12 hours. I was coming up to my 17th birthday, now about to reach 55, with both parents gone. Time, man..
I had seen Queen three times live before this and was serving in the Military down in the Falkland Islands during Live Aid so didn't get to see it until I got home in October 85. My Mum watched it live and when we spoke about the whole Live Aid concert all she said was "I get it now, Queen blew them all off stage" and as you can see she was right.
The reason this set was so memorable was they used their time so much better than any of the other bands. They crammed all this into 21 mins. Incredible!

Greatest frontman for any band ever, and one hell of a singer.
I saw Queen in 86 at Knebworth (after Wembley). It was a last minute thing. It turned out to be, unknown to everyone, including the band, their last ever gig in the UK. I was damn lucky to get 2 tickets.
They were everything you wanted Queen to be. Totally worth the 4 hour long nightmare of exiting the car park.
Of course everyone was going crazy but when they played Crazy Little Thing, it just JUMPED OFF.
On Live Aid day, all the bands, no exceptions, were given 20 or 23 minutes I think, and Queen rehearsed this set with alarm clocks all week. If you look past Brian, you will see the clock. I have seen many, MANY big bands; Queen are in my top 5 against very strong competition.
FUN FACT my mum still has a thing for Freddie! Pisses my dad off (comically) every time.
I was there at Knebworth too... still the best gig I ever went to - so far! worth sitting through Belouis Some & Quo (Big Country were actually quite good!) to see them give us 2 hours of Queen epicness & it is so bittersweet that we got to see the last ever Queen gig... but yes... that car park... we were on a coach & we finally got out at 2am after boarding the coach at 23:30...
Think the fact you guys both sat in silence and enjoyed the music, says everything about Freddie as a performer. Just commanded the stage and attention. 1 of a kind which some of us were fortunate enough to witness. RIP Freddie.
The movie is entertaining, no doubt, but has nothing to do with reality. For example, Queen haven't split up before Live Aid, they were actually on tour before, Freddie got HIV later, "We will rock you" was written in the late 70s and not in the 80s and so on.
What makes this performance so great, is the fact that Freddie was suffering from problems with his throat and voice and his doctor even adviced him not to sing. I'm sure his throat was burning like hell after the show. But even a sick Freddie was just phenomenal!
Spot on. Freddie was diagnosed sometime in 1987. Live Aid was 1985!! Made for a great movie and tied it all in nicely. At the end of the day the movie is only based on true events not a historical recreation.

Watched this aged 12 on German television with the volume turned down whilst listening to the live FM radio broadcast in stereo on BFBS (British Forces Broadcasting Service).
We had to do that in them days when TVs only had one small tinny speaker.
Now watching this from Australia and it brings it all back.

I was just a kid when I watched Live Aid live on the tv with my Mum. I was far more interested in the prospect of Madonna performing later in the day than I would ever have been about watching Queen. But Freddie captivated me. He owns the stage like no one else before him, now or in the future. This was a masterclass in how to get the audience eating out of your hand. His voice and stage presence is out of this world.
David Bowie was booked to perform next .......he was heard backstage saying ..... "Bastards ..how am I supposed to follow that"
He was in Philadelphia with Clapton at the other concert.
Bowie shortened his set so that the Cars' "Drive" video could be shown. That video was heartbreaking and donations flooded in. After all these years it's easy to forget the purpose of the whole event was to raise money that saved lives.
@@raybishop1130 It's also easy to forget that a day or two before LIVE AID, Queen were quite honest that they weren't doing it for charity, they were doing it for the publicity and I think they kinda hinted that was everyone's real reason for doing it. AS A VIEWER it was hard to forgot the real reason behind it ... But then loads of "woke" people of the day were protesting that we SHOULDN'T give to the charity ... I can't fully recall their pathetic reasoning but it angered me and I got sick of arguing with all the "Bernard Righton's" ...
@@stephenbrough8132 It wasn't a pathetic reason that many protested the charitable aspect of the concert. The problem was that Ethiopian bureaucrats demanded 20% of the take before allowing a single penny to be given to the people that actually needed it and it was the same bureaucrats and aristocratic class of people that were responsible for the need for the concert in the first place. Ethiopia didn't lack the wealth or resources to feed its people just those in power refused to distribute it.
Kinda like the UK now, there is no need for charities and foodbanks that help those in poverty in the UK those that have the wealth just need to be made to share it better with better wages and fairer taxation.

Most of the people objecting to other people giving their money to charity on the basis that 20% is being scraped off by wealthy, horrible people, THEN just went down the pub and gave 20% to the already rich breweries and landlords, or wasted it on other garbage like Che Guevara Tee Shirts and tat like that. They were mostly a bunch of posing hypocrites and still are.

Arguably the best live performance of all time. Dont forget Queen did this show well after it sold out.....and they were not even on the original announced final line up. Freddie grabbed all these neutrals by the balls.....and totally killed it. A genius👍
No-one rocked a crowd like our beloved Freddie and Queen. 💕 I was 6yrs old when Killer Queen was released and was instantly under their magical spell. Still rocking out to them with my grandson's.. their in our heart and soul 🎶 🎸✌. ❤ from 🇬🇧.
Freddie wasn't just an outstanding performer and entertainer, he was a force of nature, you can see this in how he moved about on stage, he had so much energy. When he got sick, they had finished recording the album 'Innuendo' but before it was released, Freddie knew he didn't have a lot of time and kept working, getting as many vocals for new songs recorded as long as he was able, leading to the band having to finish the 94 album 'Made in Heaven ' without him after he passed away

This is what relaunched Queen as a viable main stream band around the world Freddy adored his audience especially at this show he never again (he'd been off the rails for a while) forgot the love he was show by the fans that day
They came back later in the evening ( just Brian on acoustic guitar and Freddie ) and performed "Is This The World That We Created" .... a short but beautiful song .

Guys that was amazing, I was about to suggest you watched that. In Britain this show is still today a golden moment that brought the nation together. The most amazing thing about this show is that its not actual a Queen concert, but Freddy ruled that day and turned anyone who wasn't a Queen fan into one (me included)He will always be in our hearts. Freddie was diagnosed in 1987, not before Live Aid. There are so many mistakes and lies in this "great" movie only for more drama, it ´s only movie... My favorite Queen concert is Queen Live at the Rainbow from 1974, great job
People keep recommending it to me - I don't think I'll bother if it's another Hollywood "U571" load of made up facts. The Prime minister got involved in condemning that work of fiction.
To give people some idea how good Queen was that day, the legendary David Bowie who was on next after Queen was heard by a reporter to exclaim "how the fuck am I supposed to follow that".
Looking at the crowds reaction you would think they're all diehard Queen fans,not the case, Queen wasn't even on the published performer list,so the majority of the crowd had already purchased their tickets and were shocked when Queen showed up,best present ever received 👌👌👌
And Bowie was superb. He often said how much he loved performing at Live Aid.

The absolute precision in timing of this band is amazing , the red light at the front of the stage comes on exactly as Freddie lowers his arm for the last bow ! What is missing from this video though? Yes not one sighting of that fabulous drummer and vocalist ROGER TAYLOR.
Many people who watch this don't realise that the audience at this show were not all Queen fans they were there for any of the other acts on that day and night . That Freddie though... Master Musician . Love , love, love him.

There are plenty of bands doing it, they just don't get the media coverage because it doesn't suit the record companies to have original free-thinking bands, they'd much rather have cookie-cutter easy to promote bands that appeal to teenagers than actually musically original bands that take time to listen and appreciate.

I was at Knebworth in August 1986, part of The Magic Tour. It was Freddie's last live performance with Queen. They arrived by helicopter with the “It's a kind of magic” livery and gave an incredible performance! They were supported by Status Quo and Big Country.

Yep. Me too. I think there was a 4th band, but I can't remember who they were. We left before the God save the Queen number, to get out before the rush. The other one was in 1976 at Stafford Bingley Hall near Birmingham, with an audience of about 6000.

It was supposed to be recorded too, but when asked where the master tapes were, Brian May said: "The cameras were rolling, and visuals of the entire concert were relayed to the Idaphore screens simultaneously with the show. All it needed was for someone in our team to put a tape machine on the end of either the screen mix or the cameras themselves. No-one did. So it all went into the Ether, and is, by now, about 20 light years away, on its way to ... well, anyone out there who is watching in our corner of the Galaxy."

I didn’t have a TV at the time and even listening to it live on the radio you could tell how epic and formidable this set was. Enjoyed “Bohemian Rhapsody” but a fair bit of artistic license was applied to the timeline and Queen did not reform just before this concert.
Few people have Freddie’s range and strength of voice together with stage presence, however George Michael singing “Someone to love” at Freddie’s memorial concert comes close.
… and this wasn’t Queens audience! Freddie was on 🔥 despite being advised by doctor not to sing. Live aid was an iconic event with 2 simultaneous benefit concerts in London & Philadelphia. Like so many I was glued to TV for most of the day & used several VHS tapes in case I missed anything. David Bowie followed Queen on set and was also amazing.
I had the privilege of seeing Queen live as a teenager back in 1975. (Had a massive crush on Roger Taylor 😍)
Am watching this clip again & am overcome with nostalgia. It was a day when music & love came together to do something good. It was also a great time to be young. Again, great reaction boys x
I was 9 and watched this on TV at home in Sweden. Little did I know then that this was going to make an impact, still in 2022.
But I remember this thrill I felt, couldn’t take my eyes from Freddie, that talented beautiful man.
About the only momentous life changing event where I can say 'I was there'. To the right of stage half way back. What I really remember (apart from this amazing set by THE best band of the era) was when they played the video of the famine and that 'Who's Gonna Drive You Home' by Cars. 100,000 very noisy people went TOTALLY quiet. And then you heard the sobs of people crying. Still brings a lump to my throat.
We THEN knew what we were REALLY there for.
RIP Freddie. You did us proud.

I was 14 and watched Live Aid live on TV. Stuck with me for the rest of my life. I've relatched this many time and it still fresh. The crowd were his best instrument....

I loved watching it on the day, I loved watching it now. As a band they were second to none led by the GOAT, the best frontman any band ever had.
Still to this day, you feel proud, happy, sad and get goosebumps every time you watch it, great reaction guys.
I was there too. I touched bono when he came to the crowd. Absolutely buzzing. Defo one of the best days of my life. Queen was defo my favourite of the day!

I've lost count of how many times I've watched this performance I watch again every time someone reacts to it I wasn't old enough to go (parents wouldn't let a 13 year old go off on the train to London) and see it live had to watch it on tv but it was amazing
I'll never forget watching it live, it was like a full Queen concert condensed into 20 minutes. All the tickets had been sold before Queen were added to the line up so it wasn't even a Queen audience, but still Freddie had them in the palm of his hand. I was lucky enough to see them at Knebworth the following year which was Freddie's last concert with them before he passed away.

@@chrismcdonagh688 Freddie was magnetic to watch , I watched The Green Day concert in Hyde Park a few times, and Freddie could have been there watching, all those thousands singing his song.
Most musicians today can only wish to have half the showmanship, charisma and sheer talent of Freddie Mercury.
Yet it was Brian May's awesome guitar playing that made us all buy the first album! The signature Queen sound.

Freddie had the triple talent of entertaining front man, great singer and crowd control, the trifecta of a rock musician.
I was in London at the time visiting my aunt watching this.never forget queen that night absolutely brilliant 🤩 got to see them in Slane castle Ireland 🇮🇪 in 86 Freddie Mercury was the most amazing front man ever little did I know at the time this would be the last time we would see queen in concert in Ireland 🇮🇪 was devastated when he died in 1991 we lost a true legend but his voice and queen live on
I remember seeing this live as a kid. Wasn’t really interested in music, wasn’t interested in Live Aid but when Freddie came on five year old me knew I was witnessing something magical
I was in my parents car heading from Scotland to Ludlow we were allowed to have Live Aid on the radio all day, unheard of with my ma n pa, but I just remember all of us being mesmerised by this performance, so so good!
This was all televised live so even us Aussies had the pleasure of witnessing pure brilliance! We partied and raised $$ over here as it was overnight, our time! Brings back so many memories! Great reaction, guys! 👍🏼👍🏼🇦🇺🇦🇺😊😊
I wouldn’t take too much notice of what happened in the film, the film was dramatised and not historically accurate, they used a lot of artistic license, so don’t use it as a base of what actually happened. Just be aware of that.
I was a very lucky 15 year old who went to that concert I was stood by the tent in the middle of the crowd watching this brings back great memories
