You’re spoiling us with all these amazing speakers. This guy is a badass, so glad someone had the nerve to take on mining rare earth minerals. Definitely a buy and hold company for me.

And he spoke for about 10 minutes talking about how badass he was. I think tonight I will fall asleep to the phrase “…I was on the steps of he Delaware courthouse…” over and over. Meanwhile MP is one of the few SPACs Chamath invested in that has not tanked. I get a bit suspicious when I smell self-promotion, but yeah, I own some MP stock also

Geothermal brine is increasingly looked at as a source of Lithium. There is a possibility that fracking waste would also contain Lithium since fracking chemicals are pumped deep underground just as water is when Geothermal energy is produced (depending on the local geology). The fracking waste water could contain valuable lithium.

This is one of the most important and necessary discussions that the world needs today. The supply chain for REE and CMs needs to be discussed. But this is perhaps the worst presentation given during #AIS. I encourage folks to read the two short reports on $MP:
    1) NdPr is uneconomical to mine, even in this economic environment,
    2) Its only sales are from one buyer in China who also happens to be bidding up the price every quarter because they have a stake in the company. You can't "compete against China" if China owns the company and is your only end user,
    3) It takes a considerable amount of tech and knowledge to separate REE, and none of the C-level management have any prior experience in a mining company,
    4) Do you think a former hedge fund manager is smarter than all the global mining tech companies who saw this as uneconomic?
    Sincerely, a Research Geologist.

Lovely. I put MP in my favourite file some months back :) Bravo - such a kick ass move . You could say that this is ,in the current climate ( all interpretations) an essential moral move to save this mine and parallel Chinas production - not as an opponent but as a balancing of distribution and supply. It can only be a good thing. Hope they continue to succeed. I've told my daughter and son in law to invest! Patriotic duty !!!

Some of these rare earth materials can be found in existing stockpiles of coal ash. It's possible to design some bacteria to extract them or use electro-chemical means to get this slagg-together material from the ash. It makes more sense to do that than just dump it in rivers and streams where it will ultimately poison people's drinking water.

Great conversation. But the real issue with the United States is that the Age of the Industrialist is over. Our once glorious industrial base has been eviscerated by the financial class and there is no one with the cajones to take on these risks. You don’t go from running a hedge fund to being a mine operator without a massive amount of capital to buy the talent needed to operate those projects. Our “woke” ESG requirements are an anathema to natural resource extraction. The United State’s path to electrification will be a dream for decades.

As an American and a studying geology major, I am still very skeptical of MP Materials, particularly given that China-backed Shenghe Holdings owns 7.7% of this company. Not to mention, Chamath is a large investor in this company and is very outspoken with his Anti-Uyghur sentiment. Something just seems fishy with this company.
