You do know that Musk says that while not caring about safety issues in Tesla factories causing their Tesla workers to lose their limbs permanently or not carrying out chemical safety classes which caused many workers to lose their eye sight permanently? And yes the kicker is, Musk tried to hide the worker injuries are still continuing to this day despite Musk saying something like he supports free speech. What faith in humanity was there when it requires sacrificing people?
Watching this video, I have to say that Chris Anderson is an outstanding and amazing interviewer. All questions were totally on point and not only interesting but also different to what we have heard before from Elon. Throughout the interview, one could see the underlying structure and guidance which made it easy to listen and follow along. And one thing that especially stood out: He rarely interrupted but still managed to get all the necessary information while not digressing from the main topics. I watched a 1 hour long interview, enjoyed every second and am stunned afterwards to a point where not writing a comment simply isn't a possibility. That's what interviews should be like. That's quality.
I agree with Elon. I really hope we will be able to solve and cure mental health disorders and I hope we will be able understand more about the brain and understand more about the mind in five to ten years (thats my estimate). This interview gives me hope and I hope Neuralink will be safe and I hope it will help people who are going through tough times. This was a great interview. Thank you Elon and I hope you succeed!

Props to Chris Anderson and the rest of the TED team. This is such a great interview. All questions are well curated; well researched. Execution is perfect. Held Elon accountable as necessary but at the same time gave him time to explain. TED talks with Elon will go down in history for sure.

You can't change the future, you can only change the present reality. Buying electric cars could lead to a sustainable and better future, but it might as well do the opposite. There is no way to be sure. Electric cars could for example lead to a massive increase in traffic because suddenly driving around your car is almost free using solar power and that increase in traffic would produce more secondary CO2 than it saves by ditching gasoline, like fixing roads (asphalt -> super high in CO2), building more bridges (concrete -> super high in CO2), wear and production of tires, etc etc. IMO the best way to fix the future is a drastic decrease in human population to levels where we can live in symbiosis with nature and let everyone enjoy a happy and healthy life. We just don't fulfill the requirements to be an advanced species so long there is unnecessary suffering. If we can't fix our most basic of needs for all, why would you want to spread such a toxic culture into space? We're not worthy (yet). We have to grow up first and then join the galactic community. One step at a time.. they're probably watching us and there is no way they would let a species loose into space that is at the verge of using nuclear bombs against each other. How stupid is that.. and if you believe you're safe from earthlings on Mars you're totally wrong. Nukes can reach Mars without a problem. In fact I'm sure some countries will setup spy satellites around Mars the moment it is colonized and then claim they are building weapons of mass destruction to justify an invasion.

I love his closing line, "Take action to make it good, and then it will be." So many people get this wrong. We're in a generation full of people who complain about everything as if it's beyond them, rather than forging themselves into the solution to the problems that keep them up at night. I wish more people followed this advice. Be the change you want to see in the world. It's so simple. Stop whining and get to work.
And Elon knows this. Hence why he has zeroed in one one of our main achilles heels at the moment; Twitter. This emerging technology and it's tendency to cater to the worst of human nature is preventing us from even having reasonable conversations about these solutions.

I actually think the interviewer was trying hard not to spill out all his dreams he pondered in the late nights of his life. It was rather incredible and added a dimension to the interview that I enjoyed very deeply. That deep big dream for the future is missing in near every sphere of human endeavor today . War , supply chain issues , global crisis, and on and on. It's so inspiring to see a host let out their deeper self .

This is one of the better interviews I have ever heard, the interviewer had educated, thought provoking questions, that weren’t trying to provoke a response, but rather intellectually stimulating content. I wish all interviews were approached similarly.
Some people predict the price of the tesla in future is increase. Because of the earth is limited of lithium to create more battery of tesla. But for me tesla is good for environment, easy to use and they not create a pollution like other car using gas.

I think the most profound things he said in this interview[49:06] was the move away from representational democracy to a direct democracy, having laws that are short enough for people to understand, and making it harder to make laws than to get rid of laws. Excellent interview!
Wait! So he has a thought where in democracy, should be much harder to create a law than harder to get rid of a law. So, making law should be hard and get rid of one should be easier. Not equal harder? Direct democracy not representative, so the people would vote straight for a law to pass or not. How about people with different IQ? Make simple laws so people can understand them. So what about loopholes if the law is not well detailed. Making simple law, is that means people in Mars will be people who won't reason well in order to give them easy to understand laws.

Representational democracy is certainly horrible. But, direct democracy is worse. The problem is that any time you allow any group of people to control the lives of another group of people (even by a Kumbaya voting process), you inevitably end up with despotism, slavery and death. The only solution is a culture that legitimizes opting out of ANY political jurisdiction at ANY time. The only legitimate laws require unanimous consent. If 99 out of 100 people vote for something, it should only apply the 99, and the 1 outlier should be free to opt out.

Best Elon interview I've ever seen, a very relaxed Elon, Chris was excellent and stayed away from the really depressing areas that Elon find hard to shake and move on from during an interview and the future really is bright. Don't let the doomsday crowd get you down. IMO anyone having watched this interview, still talking bad about Elon has an ulterior motive.

I have a complex relationship with Elon Musk. Generally I don’t trust people with too much power, but I feel some hope with this guy having the power that he does.

I think it's healthy to have your skepticism. However, what I have found is that for great things to happen, it often takes one significant leader to lead people, for the better or for the worse. I'm not convinced that humans can make great progress without significant people taking charge. I've seen it in business and in politics.

He has made things happen just as he said. No reason to believe that it won't continue. He is very obviously working hard to see these things come into fruition, when he could have years ago retreated back to a Yacht and lived like a King for the rest of his days. Elon is an awesome human being. People tend to define him in terms of his wealth but in reality I think money is just a means to an end for him. Every couple of hundred years or so someone like him comes along to propel humanity forwards.

As a farmer I could really use a robot that would cut, ted, collect, bale and stack the hay every year. If I could do everything else I could run the farm from my wheelchair. Musk speaks of fixing brain and spine injury…this is what I deal with daily and would be first in line to volunteer for testing!
People should own robots not corporations. Blender is a 3d animation program that is open source. I hope we can show robots what to do and record it with blender and play it back so the robot will do it. Soon we will be able to 3d print our own robots that will do labor for us. That we can spend our time raising children.

Hard to make a good future when the GOP stifles so many by despising college educations and offering no solutions as to how to pay those costs. If students could pay for their schooling in technical subjects by consulting for the school during the summer with room and board paid for by companies (or just on campus) and call it a wash for their tuition, imagine how much more technical talent the U.S. could have.

I was talking w my gf and i realized that Elon is actually building a future today with the big picture @ the forefront and every company he has created or collaborated with is only a cog in a much bigger machine. He knows humanity plays a huge role in his vision of the future. He's mentioned in the past that there were once great empires that have been advanced technologically only to crumble from within and collapse. Back into the "dark ages" less than they once were. This usually has to do with the insatiable appetite of the ego and its hunger for power. He recognizes the social fabric of our democracy is frayed and tattered yet still intact albeit the rip that is growing at an alarming rate with each election cycle. Thats why i think he feels it is necessary to embark on this communication endeavor with twitter. Why there is so much pushback is strange. Who's really pushing? What are in the data servers @twitter that compels the powerful to take an advesarial stance? Was there a coordinated effort between the Govt. Tech and Media to elevate political figures and diminish others? How active of a role did twitter take? If any? Was there election meddling going on? Any contribution to a political campaign has to be filed with the F.E.C. and what price can be placed on the power of shaping public opinion? Certainly there must have been a conscious effort by many to maintain a relatively tight storyline surrounding COVID-19. I wonder what their direct messages (via twitter) to one another would bring to light? It makes me think that Elon might be making a lot of people nervous right now. Cant wait to see how it all unfolds.

Really interesting view of future. We always talk about how society can be good in the future passively, but Musk is a man who is working directly on multiple fronts to make those good happen. Not just in a small way like many people who pitch lofty dreams to a TED talk, but in a massively productive way thats having meaningful impact. Still there are malicious forces that intent on stopping him because of their own personal insecurities.
For all the people that dislike, or even hate him for minor reasons, it really says a lot more about them, than it does him. All things considered, an exceptional human being.
That's one of the best interviews i saw. Besides the content, which is eye opening, Chris is asking really good questions and Elon is very comfortable answering them. 💯
Of course he's comfortable, this is scripted.. I don't know how it can even be called an interview. It's the equivalent of a paid advertisement/op-ed in a newspaper.

I love the story when he called someone helping with the Thai cave rescue a pedophile. Then he paid $50k to have a private investigator try and find evidence in order to defend himself from libel. Such a decent human… oh and so humble…

This is the first interview that I’ve seen him do and I’m sorry that I didn’t pay more attention to him in the past. He is very down to earth and pretty humble. I am very impressed by Elon Musk. He is a mechanical and software engineer first, like Bill Gates, before becoming an entrepreneur. Never delve into anything until you are a world class expert on it. Steve Jobs was an exception to that rule.

@@leechap3 I agree that Bill Gates is doing lots of philanthropic work which are also very technical and detailed. I am not comparing Elon with Bill, I cant even imagine doing that. However, Elon is transforming the science and economics that we know today. Nobody believed that apart from NASA and any other govt. agencies, a young guy can think of building rockets and then reusable rockets. There might be many who are working on electric cars and AI, but he was the first one who cracked the economics and had guts to go-ahead when no one wanted to. Having such detailed understanding of product and economics help him to take such risks, i guess.
I think for the most part Ellon has his heart in the right place, but still, it's sad that most people still consider "technological evolution = betterment of humanity". We can evolve our gadgets all we want, if we don't evolve in terms of VALUES, empathy, peace, cooperation, etc..........we aren't going to have a future worth getting excited about.
Neurolink can help with values, empathy, peace and cooperation because people will be able to learn faster and communicate better with feelings rather than just words.

I can't help but wonder, as I listen to him, whether the point of highest leverage we have is taking an intellectual approach to these issues though. Very true. Technological advancements are wasted if we don't have these values guiding it. This is true now, the amount of technological advancements and advancements in medicine we have today would have been incomprehensible not too long ago, miracles, and yet these advancements which we thought would make all our lives easier and would put an end to the major problems of the world don't. Instead of being exciting about the prospect of A.I. automating jobs to make all our lives easier, we're afraid of it leaving us without jobs! And this will continue and get worse unless we actually do something to change the profit driven ideology and economic system that guides most of the world today and we must look to alternatives and different ways of ensuring values of empathy, peace and cooperation are encouraged, not penalised. Getting together and creating better systems is all well and good.......but the RAW TRUTH is, we need critical mass in terms of EXAMPLES, to even ground these systems in the world. There's no real blueprint, and the world is nowhyere near. Either a guy like Tesla does something himself (like making Twitter better say)...with the power he has from within the system..........or people like you and I have to get together and think it through..........but even that.......I can't force you to allign with these values in your personal life.....which would be the requirement on both sides for us to see the project through right? So, personal embodiment comes first I believe. I think this is a spiritual revolution we need (for lack of a better term). We need to educate people about the greater dynamics and our interconnectedness (in a non-woo woo way) ...because any change we make won't stick unless people are educated and feel enpowered to affect the world positively.

You do know that Musk says that while not caring about safety issues in Tesla factories causing their Tesla workers to lose their limbs permanently or not carrying out chemical safety classes which caused many workers to lose their eye sight permanently?
And yes the kicker is, Musk tried to hide the worker injuries are still continuing to this day despite Musk saying something like he supports free speech.

Watching this video, I have to say that Chris Anderson is an outstanding and amazing interviewer. All questions were totally on point and not only interesting but also different to what we have heard before from Elon. Throughout the interview, one could see the underlying structure and guidance which made it easy to listen and follow along. And one thing that especially stood out: He rarely interrupted but still managed to get all the necessary information while not digressing from the main topics.
I watched a 1 hour long interview, enjoyed every second and am stunned afterwards to a point where not writing a comment simply isn't a possibility. That's what interviews should be like. That's quality.
I agree with Elon. I really hope we will be able to solve and cure mental health disorders and I hope we will be able understand more about the brain and understand more about the mind in five to ten years (thats my estimate). This interview gives me hope and I hope Neuralink will be safe and I hope it will help people who are going through tough times. This was a great interview. Thank you Elon and I hope you succeed!

Props to Chris Anderson and the rest of the TED team. This is such a great interview. All questions are well curated; well researched. Execution is perfect. Held Elon accountable as necessary but at the same time gave him time to explain. TED talks with Elon will go down in history for sure.

You can't change the future, you can only change the present reality. Buying electric cars could lead to a sustainable and better future, but it might as well do the opposite. There is no way to be sure. Electric cars could for example lead to a massive increase in traffic because suddenly driving around your car is almost free using solar power and that increase in traffic would produce more secondary CO2 than it saves by ditching gasoline, like fixing roads (asphalt -> super high in CO2), building more bridges (concrete -> super high in CO2), wear and production of tires, etc etc. IMO the best way to fix the future is a drastic decrease in human population to levels where we can live in symbiosis with nature and let everyone enjoy a happy and healthy life. We just don't fulfill the requirements to be an advanced species so long there is unnecessary suffering. If we can't fix our most basic of needs for all, why would you want to spread such a toxic culture into space? We're not worthy (yet). We have to grow up first and then join the galactic community. One step at a time.. they're probably watching us and there is no way they would let a species loose into space that is at the verge of using nuclear bombs against each other. How stupid is that.. and if you believe you're safe from earthlings on Mars you're totally wrong. Nukes can reach Mars without a problem. In fact I'm sure some countries will setup spy satellites around Mars the moment it is colonized and then claim they are building weapons of mass destruction to justify an invasion.

It was rather incredible and added a dimension to the interview that I enjoyed very deeply. That deep big dream for the future is missing in near every sphere of human endeavor today .

Most didn’t even think electric cars would be a thing for another 50 years.
This is one of the better interviews I have ever heard, the interviewer had educated, thought provoking questions, that weren’t trying to provoke a response, but rather intellectually stimulating content. I wish all interviews were approached similarly.

I think the most profound things he said in this interview[49:06] was the move away from representational democracy to a direct democracy, having laws that are short enough for people to understand, and making it harder to make laws than to get rid of laws. Excellent interview!

I agree with you, today's laws are very scramble. I just took his thoughts of having a short simple law literal so I get concerned about a well detailed law is not short even to cover everything and no leave space for loopholes.
Representational democracy is certainly horrible. But, direct democracy is worse. The problem is that any time you allow any group of people to control the lives of another group of people (even by a Kumbaya voting process), you inevitably end up with despotism, slavery and death.
The only solution is a culture that legitimizes opting out of ANY political jurisdiction at ANY time. The only legitimate laws require unanimous consent. If 99 out of 100 people vote for something, it should only apply the 99, and the 1 outlier should be free to opt out.

I have a complex relationship with Elon Musk.
Generally I don’t trust people with too much power, but I feel some hope with this guy having the power that he does.

I think it's healthy to have your skepticism. However, what I have found is that for great things to happen, it often takes one significant leader to lead people, for the better or for the worse.

He has made things happen just as he said. No reason to believe that it won't continue. He is very obviously working hard to see these things come into fruition, when he could have years ago retreated back to a Yacht and lived like a King for the rest of his days.
Really, this is a very important point of evidence: At this point there is NO reason for him to work at all (let alone 60+ hours per week) other than for these visions that he has stated again and again

What an excellent interviewer. Very knowledgable about your subject, didn't put the subject on guard, and the whole thing just flowed very naturally. A real pro.
As a farmer I could really use a robot that would cut, ted, collect, bale and stack the hay every year. If I could do everything else I could run the farm from my wheelchair. Musk speaks of fixing brain and spine injury…this is what I deal with daily and would be first in line to volunteer for testing!
People should own robots not corporations. Blender is a 3d animation program that is open source. I hope we can show robots what to do and record it with blender and play it back so the robot will do it. Soon we will be able to 3d print our own robots that will do labor for us. That we can spend our time raising children.

I was talking w my gf and i realized that Elon is actually building a future today with the big picture @ the forefront and every company he has created or collaborated with is only a cog in a much bigger machine. He knows humanity plays a huge role in his vision of the future. He's mentioned in the past that there were once great empires that have been advanced technologically only to crumble from within and collapse. Back into the "dark ages" less than they once were. This usually has to do with the insatiable appetite of the ego and its hunger for power. He recognizes the social fabric of our democracy is frayed and tattered yet still intact albeit the rip that is growing at an alarming rate with each election cycle. Thats why i think he feels it is necessary to embark on this communication endeavor with twitter. Why there is so much pushback is strange. Who's really pushing? What are in the data servers @twitter that compels the powerful to take an advesarial stance? Was there a coordinated effort between the Govt. Tech and Media to elevate political figures and diminish others? How active of a role did twitter take? If any? Was there election meddling going on? Any contribution to a political campaign has to be filed with the F.E.C. and what price can be placed on the power of shaping public opinion? Certainly there must have been a conscious effort by many to maintain a relatively tight storyline surrounding COVID-19. I wonder what their direct messages (via twitter) to one another would bring to light? It makes me think that Elon might be making a lot of people nervous right now. Cant wait to see how it all unfolds.

Really interesting view of future. We always talk about how society can be good in the future passively, but Musk is a man who is working directly on multiple fronts to make those good happen. Not just in a small way like many people who pitch lofty dreams to a TED talk, but in a massively productive way thats having meaningful impact. Still there are malicious forces that intent on stopping him because of their own personal insecurities.

However, Elon is transforming the science and economics that we know today. Nobody believed that apart from NASA and any other govt. agencies, a young guy can think of building rockets and then reusable rockets. There might be many who are working on electric cars and AI, but he was the first one who cracked the economics and had guts to go-ahead when no one wanted to. Having such detailed understanding of product and economics help him to take such risks, i guess.
I think for the most part Ellon has his heart in the right place, but still, it's sad that most people still consider "technological evolution = betterment of humanity". We can evolve our gadgets all we want, if we don't evolve in terms of VALUES, empathy, peace, cooperation, etc..........we aren't going to have a future worth getting excited about.
Neurolink can help with values, empathy, peace and cooperation because people will be able to learn faster and communicate better with feelings rather than just words.

@@andybaldman I've just listened to snippets of him talk on a podcast on youtube. Thanks for sharing! He does seem to have thought a lot of this through. I can't help but wonder, as I listen to him, whether the point of highest leverage we have is taking an intellectual approach to these issues though. I've seen other people in the past interested in the same issues...but I wonder who is having the most positive impact in moving things forward...them...or , say, service-oriented spiritual leaders, like a Sadhuguru etc.
I ask because, as someone with the 'potential' for being intelectual, but little patience for long-winded stuff ...I don't know how much the general public is served by this high-minded approach.
Very true. Technological advancements are wasted if we don't have these values guiding it. This is true now, the amount of technological advancements and advancements in medicine we have today would have been incomprehensible not too long ago, miracles, and yet these advancements which we thought would make all our lives easier and would put an end to the major problems of the world don't. Instead of being exciting about the prospect of A.I. automating jobs to make all our lives easier, we're afraid of it leaving us without jobs! And this will continue and get worse unless we actually do something to change the profit driven ideology and economic system that guides most of the world today and we must look to alternatives and different ways of ensuring values of empathy, peace and cooperation are encouraged, not penalised. I don't think this is optional, it's necessary if we wanna have optimism for the future. Thanks for coming to my ted talk 👍.
@@alexstone9099 As far as I've been able to see the key is really embodying these values in our personal lives. Getting together and creating better systems is all well and good.......but the RAW TRUTH is, we need critical mass in terms of EXAMPLES, to even ground these systems in the world. There's no real blueprint, and the world is nowhyere near.
Either a guy like Tesla does something himself (like making Twitter better say)...with the power he has from within the system..........or people like you and I have to get together and think it through..........but even that.......I can't force you to allign with these values in your personal life.....which would be the requirement on both sides for us to see the project through right? So, personal embodiment comes first I believe.
I think this is a spiritual revolution we need (for lack of a better term). We need to educate people about the greater dynamics and our interconnectedness (in a non-woo woo way) ...because any change we make won't stick unless people are educated and feel enpowered to affect the world positively.
