Hey Tom , on the mic pack there should be a sensitivity option which will be in like negative EG: -10 DB , try setting it to a less sensitive setting EG -15DB and that should help a bit ! Great content as always !
that 6mm pyro/mi cable will carry 60a plus have a look at the regs book have seen lotus of houses with pyro incomers but the pots often look shot on them
True, and you can't have the basic insulation exposed which is very common with the pyro installs I've seen! And there's never enough space to make it right. 16mm tails buried in the wall is a bit iffy though! SWA, galv trunking, or galv conduit would have been my solutions.
Tom is determined to never run 16mm SWA :) I'm really uncomfortable running 16mm tails or t&E through the fabric of a building if it's not protected by an RCD at the meter end.
Why did you change the central heating from plugs/socket to a fused spur? I had to "dissuade" the electrician/plumber re-wiring my home from doing the exact same thing. My reason? When power fails and I am running a generator, I can simply transfer the c/h to the genny with (in my case) one plug.
Naomi has really brought the channel to life. I see she's already learned the trick of smearing some dirt on her face and pulling her shirt out of shape to look like she's been working hard.
Depending on the mic and if it's the one I think you're using they have individual volume controls or gain controls at the individual packs so you could theoretically turn one down but it's a balancing act. That will also help with the Distortion with high-level signals coming into them for momentary transients.
@thomas Nagy I got an apprentiship next year in electrics and all I can see is people talking about random stuff but I know you know what Is actually worth learning, can you tell me what’s best to learn before doing my apprenticeship to get a head start?
What don’t understand, non sparks, if you need 25mm tails, why is the incoming feed from the road not 50mm if it then is split into two?I have a feed of 6mm from the pole but the sparks fitted 10mm from the meter to the fuse box because it was necessary. Why is 10mm further down the line when it is a 6mm coming into the property and the garage is separate?
Interesting about the boiler bit. I've just had a new one fitted, in a new location at home. I'm not a spark but am an engineer (aeronautical). They didn't bond any of the pipes at the boiler, at all. From what I understand it isn't needed either, but it's not an issue having it as supplimentary bonding. I do have bonding on the gas and water where it comes into the building though, but nothing at the boiler. Thoughts on this?
Assuming your install in RCD protected, I'd say it is not required. Even if it is, the metal of the boiler will effectively bond these pipes together. It's an interesting topic when we consider plastic pipe in the house. Say a bathroom towel rail is supplied by a section of plastic. Should it be bonded or not?
Hi Tom I remember watching your videos when you recommended a book which tells you heights for sockets in kitchens and general heights for switches what book was it as I canr find the vid thank you
A clamp for the tails? Why can't every board incorporate them? One of the biggest headaches for meter fitters is tails working loose inside the board (which we're not supposed to then go into and fix).
Hey, if you think the Hive heating controls are good, you should try the Honeywell Evohome ones. You get smart thermostats on each radiator valve that all talk to the controller.
In case you read the comments.. multiplying by 1.67 for a 2.5mm ring is the same as multiplying by the difference in conductor sizes (2.5/1.5), so you could do it for different sized rings if you knew the conductor size for each wire.
With the mic packs you could have one on the left channel and one on the right and then it would give you the option to change levels in post, obviously you would have to combine the stereo track into mono then.

A 2.5mm² T&E (in the UK) has twin 2.5mm² condcutors and a 1.5mm² uninsulated CPC. The resistance is proportional to the diameter, and 2.5 is roughly 1.67 times greater than 1.5 (2.5/1.5=1.67) - that's where the "magic value" of 1.67 comes from.
because your live and neutral conductors are 2.5mm but cpc is 1.5mm, Divide 2.5 by 1.5 gives you 1.67, which is how much extra resistance the smaller 1.5 mm conductor should have. It also works for 4mm ring with a 1.5mm cpc but then you would times by 2.67, because 4 divided by 1.5 = 2.67
In a 2.5/1.5 twin and earth the earth is 1.67 times smaller, so it's resistance will be 1.67 times greater for the same length. Resistance is inversely proportional to CSA.
Charlie Snell line and natural are 2.5mm, CPC is 1.5mm. 2.5 divided by 1.5 is 1.67. the 1.5 mm cable has a higher resistance than the 2.5 due to it having a smaller surface area
