    I use one of those rod driving bits in an SDS similar to yours. It's not amazing but it keeps the rod going down while I rest. I don't put a lot of rods in but the last one took over an hour so alternating hammer and SDS made huge difference to me still having a wrist capable of turning a screwdriver afterwards!
    If you're wondering why it took so long, packed urban area where the DNO refused to provide an earth (looked like there used to be TN-S but no more), which in that environment where there houses are so squashed together seems pretty bad to me. But hey-ho no choice but to rod into tough ground full of rubble, put an 8ft rod down to try and find some decent ground further down, and just pray not to hit any services. Horrible job! Managed to get about 40ohms, about same they'd been getting via the pipework (only earthing they had when I got there) just by a recognised means now, admittedly in wet ground but this was in December so waiting to test dry wasn't an option.

  • @calumclark1719
    @calumclark1719 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Random question why
    Do you install the earth rod locally when the earthing protection is provided through the supply and Swa? Is the house a TT System?

    +1 for Tom & Nom Nom getting it done.
    I don't know if it's legal there, but in some areas of the states, we can use heavy wall copper pipe for ground stake. Sweat on a fitting, attach a hose & valve, & let the ground stake drive it's own hole.
    When done, cut off the fitting & save the valve for the next one. (Fittings can usually be recovered with a blow torch & a bit of dremeling.

    With a cherry picker, one thing to consider is that if vehicle's MAM is above 3500kg, it's a totally different class of vehicle. You can't drive it with just the "B" license. So all new hires have to have C1 or C. And few rules that apply to the vehicle are different. If I recall correctly, speed limit is different, and also - more enforceble i.e. way higher fines and much lower tolerances

  • @richardperritt
    @richardperritt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Most likely not your decision and I get that but... If public supply fails, the resident has to find a torch and go upstairs to manually switch to the generator? Wouldn't an auto-contactor have been a better, yet more expensive, option?
    Also WiFi security cameras? Only as an absolute last option. (My opinion - not necessarily the same as anyone else 😁)

  • @ValdoxGaming

    Not having a bash .. genuinley curious ..
    Why did you install a distribution board rather than a consumer unit in the property ? Was it down to the amount of circuits or had some 3 phase power to run ?

    • @perry2017
      @perry2017 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with him using a vertical DB instead of split load or a double consumer, sometimes having that extra space and a little bit more 'grit' in the board saves you money on labour, just may get a bit expensive when it comes down to rcbo's. All preference in this game, sometimes penny pinching on materials can mess you up on the install!

    If putting the board at that end please cable basket the run :)
    get SDS to normal Chuck, then use for rods or drilling etc.
    Cheap earth pit is a 110mm pipe with screw end and get push fit extensions.
    CCTV depends if for crime, one good camera (Dahua/Hikvision are the good cheap end, MOBOTIX/Pelco is Schneider to go with that board/ Avigilon etc is high end) is better than 4 "HD" ones, if for checking the chucks then that kit fine. Pause a frame and check the quality :) (from the man moaning about cheap batteries and blue roll) keep up the good work.

    Tom - do they make a generator / mains switch that is automatic that allows for automatic switching and still following the regs? I think you need a jackhammer to drive the earth rods. Or an industrial vibrator but no one can hold it, put enough vibratory energy behind it and it will liquefy the earth but it is happy to liquefy anything that tries to hold it.

    Don’t buy a iveco they are very expensive to use, if it’s the one with Satnav then they crash a lot and if you get a blank screen that’s it you will loose your speedo etc until you have a new one fitted for over £1000 they are not smooth running and spring oil leaks everywhere. Good van with unlimited miles is a merc but get a plate welded around the ecu as all you need to do, too nick them is change the ecu to one you have the key for! Very easily accessed from underneath.

I also told the guy he was aiming right at the 600mm regional high pressure water main. He dismissed me as an ignorant digger. I'd spent the last 3 months working up and down that ditch-line lowering phone cables and dodging the service shut-off valves and hydrant controls. Sure enough he punctured the line and within minutes there was almost ankle deep water everywhere, and a massive crater full of water where his ground rod was supposed to be...

    Hi tom, about that manual transfer switch between mains and gen, that thing will interrupt the power, not sure if that's a customer choice but you can get cheap synchronisation systems. Or a other option: a (commanded) ATS, use a mains controlling relay to start the gen, the ATS will switch to gen power automatically, when grid is back it will go back to mains. Sad to hear that gridfeeding is not accepted there, nothing is better than see your meter going backwards. ^^
