I have to say Naomi’s wiring is excellent, very neat and tidy. That’s attention to detail right there, satisfies my OCD eye looking at that. Nice work.
Using the test adapters also include testing the integrity of the contacts in the light fittings which are bypassed when you go direct to the connections on the back.
Hi, I’m a new subscriber, this was the first video of yours I’ve watched, TH-cam recommended after watching a Bundy10 video. I’m loving the comedy, thanks for making me smile! I’ll be watching all your videos from now on.
Hi Tom and all. Thanks for the tips on the comments you write on the EICR forms. It's an improvement on what we currently write on ours and our inspector said the same last time he was here. In the spirit of returning the good advice, I would highly recommend checking out Electraform, the cloud based certification software service for sparks like us. We used to use a well known PC/Laptop based one and the issue was always getting the certificate numbers right and having to wait for our electricians to send back their certs and reminding them if they didn't. It's really easy to use and set up. It takes a little getting used to (at first the being online and having to re-type if you lose connection is a bit frustrating) but once you do get used to it and embrace it, it really does make a difference, especially if you have a few people doing certs. Being cloud based means you are always up to date. Our team have being using it since we came back from lockdown and prefer it. We have tried the NIC EIC one and its just not for me or our team at all. For the record, I have no affiliation or links to the company, I just want to spread the word about something that makes my business better and makes the job easier for our lads. Our industry is finally gaining some positive momentum with all the new tools, accessories and young smart electrical apprentices, we are all finally sticking together to make positive changes for the better. Thanks again Tom. Nice to see someone on the journey we had and for keeping it honest and real.
For some reason I thought I was watching an old video and it wasn’t until I finished it I saw it was uploaded just minutes ago 😂 oh my god I’ve never laughed so much in my life NomNom is a legend 😂
those LAP light fittings tom are SAXBY Nitro LED rebranded as LAP. spoke with a saxby rep and he confirmed. they also make a plaster in bezel for these fittings. just installed 81 in a smart home project wicked lights! (the saxby badged version is the same price). Also mate, I use the Intumescent sealant instead of fire foam. its the same stuff the fire barrier guys use in risers
Ooh a nice old dead wylex asbestos fuse boras where you had to fit fuse wire if it blew abs done contained asbestos as a flash gaurd, so asbestos in other places in the flat are high if that’s the sort of fuse box was used.
Trunking I use a hammer and a cloth to protect the surface from the impact. Cloth folded over 3 times to make a nice thick cushion, and tap gently to close it, then slide the hammer and cloth down to zip the side closed all the way down, and do again for the other side.
Just wanted to say thanks for posting your videos, I’m looking at changing career and have just started training to become a spark. Your videos help give me some insight to what work I could be facing down the line. **high five**
That is just an excuse. He is really breaking into the property. He doesn't make a very good burglar though. I mean, not only is he revealing his face, but he is also recording himself breaking in. Explain THAT to a lawyer! And now, day 2, breaking and entering again no doubt and bringing in his assistant with him! I wouldn't be surprised if he made her break in this time just for some practice!
Have used fire proofing materials in one hospital we did some work in for CCTV cameras. Used both Hilti muffins on large openings followed by fire foam on top. Darn foam is quite messy.
I’d recommend using hilti fire stop instead of foam as read that it could give you cancer. Hilti do a red type that can still allow wires through later and keep the fire rating good 😌
I've fitted loads of those LAP downlights, they're great and definitely good for the money. Can be covered wirh insulation too. Not had one fail yet. Not to be confused with the similar looking and slightly cheaper ones that don't have the large separate connection box, those ones are crap...
Agree with LAP. For example, their cheapo sp double sockets are exactly that, cheap and agricultural (fitted some once due to budget for upgrade later) but the DP double sockets are not bad, nice finish, smooth switches, ok terminals, for the money ya can't complain. Match in with MK stuff too, never mind the wierdly seized/poorly threaded terminal screws on MK light switches that nearly break the fitting...
Hi Tom, Fire foam around cables, ask not to be called back for next board change, try a search for these, only expand if in a fire, Astroflame Intumescent Fire Pillows - 120 Minute Fire Rated
For me the only thing that ruins the lap downlight is the push terminals. I don’t know if they have recently addressed that but they definitely used to be awful at holding the cables.
For the pick up from the airport... make a massive sign that says "Welcome home from the asylum!!! Great job fooling the doctors into thinking you're sane and won't kill again!!!"
hi Tom, there isn't a requirement to fire seal behind a consumer unit, the whole thing about the consumer unit being made of non combustible material is so that if a fire does start in the CU it doesn't fall apart and become more of a problem. or at least that's my understanding of it.
Fair play, that was a funny one 😂. With regards to the wrist, if you start going blind too it’s time to quit working on the laptop late into the night, but to be fair, your other half has been away for a month.🙈
I have used the ‘fuseboard’ brand a fair bit and they are good boards, struggling to get them at the moment from my wholesalers as I’m told they are struggling to get supply. 🤷♂️
Great style of presenting, thank you. I'm interested in the Q-tech adapter you mention at around 19 minutes, but I haven't been able to find them anywhere. Don't know if I'm looking in the right direction - can you help please?
Have you thoughts about using Intumescent Pillows rather than Fire Foam? it allows it to be removed later on if needed, but also provides the fire protection...
Love the content! I'm not a spark myself, although I did Level 1 Electrical Installation in college, nevertheless very interesting to see what you get up too!
That looks a similar style fuse board my dad has got in his house, but his has got half the MCBs are RCD protected and the rest is not so their just MCBs with no RCD protection so I know it’s a older style CU.
I keep having the budget fitting discussion with people online, mainly from Germany, who seem to think if something's sold in DIY stores it's automatically bad (completely ignoring the fact that almost all DIY stores also sell all the respectable brand stuff, although one chap has gone as far as claiming that even those manufacturers supply inferior products to DIY stores than to electrical wholesalers). One brand that comes under fire particularly often is Kopp. They sell pretty much everything you need for first and second fix, except cables and wires. Their switches and sockets get lots and lots of flaks and comments like "No electrician would ever use them!", as do their MCBs and RCDs but I know plenty of places that must've been wired by qualified electricians, surely the city wouldn't get DIYers to wire new blocks of council flats with hundreds of flats, and most still work after close to 30 years!
Slight diversion. What do you do when you are replacing an old CU with a new CU and the cables just aren't long enough to meet the terminal bars and MCBs in the new CU? Is it ever acceptable to splice the cables inside the CU or is this a situation where the only option is a rewire?
Friend had the same thing with a shelf at his place.. He tried putting it up 3 times, trying to work out how he has managed to spoon up getting it level.. We then find out it was his ceiling on the piss and it just messes with your eyes.
Because the most likely place for a fire to start is in the distribution board - the cables themselves are most unlikely to spontaneously combust. I wouldn't put it past IET to insist on everything in metal conduit in an upcoming rework of the regs!
12:47 Duuuuude... still way to aggressive. Just clip on the first 20-30cm, pull away the lose end in a nice big curve and just swipe it on with your palm. Almost no pushing or hitting needed for this job. Try it out! By bending the lit away from the trunking, the edge will spread a bit apart and than it's just swiping.
LAP lights good, LAP switches/sockets junk in my limited experience (I only used them once, never again) The screw terminals in the sockets and switches were under engineered and the threads stripped before a reasonable tightness could be achieved. I've used loads of the LED lamps (GLS replacements, down lighters and strip lights) with no complaints at all.
Not convinced by the LAP lights, I have seen so many problems with their previous products that I am wary of trying anything else from them. My current philosophy with downlights is where possible to go for separate bulb type units, that way if the bulb goes the customer can replace it rather than me having to deal with replacing the whole unit.
I don't think wing mirrors are claimable on insurance. And it's run of the mill shit that happens, if you want to claim up or grass up on somthing like that, your a prick.
A hacksaw blade works rather well at getting in door...a keyhole saw is even better ;) There is a huge difference between "cheap" and "inexpensive"...I wish people (keyboard experts) would learn the difference.
Tom do you prefer sealed led downlights or "cans" with an led GU10? I remember you having a few issues with the sealed ones where you had to go back and couldn't charge?
Them downlighters are no good for testing ,the best ones are the type that comes with a disconnection plug and skt,ie you can do your testing, then plug in your downlighters
I just opened this fuse box and found that it contains 5 8-way Wagos - 1 for L distribution, 2 for each earth and N, Earth and N tied together, 1 broken screw for cover and box not fixed to wall. Next step: trip to home depot to get supplies.
I have to say Naomi’s wiring is excellent, very neat and tidy. That’s attention to detail right there, satisfies my OCD eye looking at that. Nice work.
Agree with Tom completely! I’ve installed dozens of the LAP security lights and batten lights and never had a problem with them yet!
Love the banter; keeps the job light and fun, regardless of what shit is going on.
Using the test adapters also include testing the integrity of the contacts in the light fittings which are bypassed when you go direct to the connections on the back.
Tom uploades a video, The day just gets so much better!!! Hope you safe and well. 👍👍
I try 👍
Absolutely quality. Especially the face at the end on the sucking issue 😂
Have you tried using intumescent putty sheets for the back of the boards? You can mould it round the cables and makes it easier for future upgrades.

V-Tac are also the same light, from CPC for less than a tenner, had 3 fail out of about 500 in the last year

Luceco down-lights. 11.99 from screwfix also an incredible maintenance free downlight. Got soft start on aswell. Really smart.

The videos would need to be around the two minute mark long.
I agree about the lap light fittings they not so bad for a budget fitting also dimmable not bad for price
Have used fire proofing materials in one hospital we did some work in for CCTV cameras. Used both Hilti muffins on large openings followed by fire foam on top. Darn foam is quite messy.
NomNom is pretty good with the Consumer Unit Install. Very Neat & Tidy, good work.👍🏼 Why is this in 720p? I thought I needed a new pair of glasses.😂
Decent job of the board
Nice work with the neutrals 👍🏽
Just about to fit an sbs board next week, not too expensive and has neutral busbar which will make it nice and easy to be neat!
They are fantastic boards, shame more people don’t use them. 😉

Massive improvement to that place, nice job guys.
Fire mastic is best, fire foam reacts with the PVC cables and degrades the cable, great video mate

Soft faced hammer or a white rubber mallet works well for stubborn trunking
That's one of the neatest boards I've ever seen!
Thomas, Berkmann wine cellars van that took your mirror off, has a TH-cam account,,its wine time,,😂
Seems a few nagy gang have left a comment😂

I’m in Year 10 and if you joke about COVID-19 you get excluded

Surprise! I've cleaned the bathroom (once in five weeks). What do you think about the LAP light fitting?
one thing with night latches is that you can actually deadbolt them so that you cannot do what you just did, but most people never do!
Not from outside though...
That end.. NICE
I think they might be a budget fitting 😆
Fair play, that was a funny one 😂. With regards to the wrist, if you start going blind too it’s time to quit working on the laptop late into the night, but to be fair, your other half has been away for a month.🙈

is fire foam allowed on wires when foam reacts with the insulation of the wires?
Yes mate always a good idea
Have you thoughts about using Intumescent Pillows rather than Fire Foam? it allows it to be removed later on if needed, but also provides the fire protection...
Berkmann Wine cellars - what a perfect name for them.

Why is it you have to update fuse boards to metal but you can extend in plastic box ?? Am I missing the point
Because the most likely place for a fire to start is in the distribution board - the cables themselves are most unlikely to spontaneously combust. I wouldn't put it past IET to insist on everything in metal conduit in an upcoming rework of the regs!
the plastic enclosure is downstream from the protection device in the main board, so any overheat faults should stay in the metal enclosure

You are correct farmersteve ,I’ve had loads of issues with sealed fittings from different manufacturers, gu10 and cans all the way from me.
You probably got his license plate recorded a second after where you cut that clip. Plus that it's sign written...
The time required to make a police report and go through insurance would be more than 100 for a new mirror.
and because some subscribers are weirdos i've no doubt someone has already contacted the company written on the van to report the hit and run

Hope you sent the video of the van taking your mirror off to your insurance!
It's probably cheaper not to get them involved. Especially if it is only £100 for a mirror
no way is it worth having a claim record on your insurance for the sake of a hundred quid mirror
No, you don't send things like that to your insurer.
I thought you had a switchboard in your van. Seems legit lol
can you give us the correct name for the cable holder please I've tried ramp tech and rump tech ... I'm getting nothing.
