    Always take date stamped pictures before and after any work done. In a client property. Saves a world of pain Later on.

      By far the worst bodges I've ever seen have been in London.
      Air con power supplies, shop fitters adding in odd circuits, maintenance firms fitting metal fittings to circuits with no earth.
      Its a complete shit hole/shit show from start to finish...

    Fire alarm installer could have been waiting for the mains supply to be installed? I've had to do it with intruder alarms, CCTV etc, (not done it with fire personally) where the lack of a fused spur or supply is holding the job up. It gets put on a plug top and the customer chases up the spark to get it finished off. Often go back to jobs months later to find them still plugged in. Two sides to every story I guess...

    • @johnhoward2104
      @johnhoward2104 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem is that you could be accused of having caused the mark (or damage, etc) yourself and are taking a photo just to claim that it wasn't you that did it. The only sure way is to go around the property taking pics with the owner/responsible person before you even start any work, but often that's just not possible.

    I must say speaking as someone who is on a Tenants and Residents Association and a Tenants Union I always recommend to tenants to record visually every single bit of the house before you even put the carpet down. Because Landlords can also be a hole's. However I also feel more confident that when trades people come into tenants properties they photograph their work as they are showing their pride in their work and willing to take steps to show their confident knowing they have done it professionally! However to be honest and I can see all trades people wearing body cams when working in the future with all this claim and blame culture. If I were a tradesperson right now I would wear one all the time to cover my arse.

      Went to a leasehold property on a site the other day, owner called me in to check buzzing noises after the site electrician had been in. He'd caulked all around the switches and sockets, the buzzing was arching in the switch where the cables weren't even done up in the terminals. Exposed inner insulation outside of fittings etc etc - this place has only just been tested apparently yet two sockets so far have blown up also due to loose wiring.
      Everyone should be taking photos and documenting the state of the property when they move in and second opinions and inspections are a tenant/landlords right. Just because it's all included doesn't mean they have your best interests at heart.

      Worth sending your move in photos to the manager and getting an ack if you can, or just annotate them on to the incoming report. I've been through a "discussion" recently where damage that was barely visible in their photos when i moved in was something I was expected to pay for when I moved out. Luckily I had better photos and had attached them to the report when I moved in, clearly showing every bit of damage. Some of it was luck... "and out this window you can see the stump of the tree that allegedly I removed"

    DO NOT UNPLUG THE FIRE ALARM.
    Turn the receptacle switch off instead.
    Absolutely a good idea for contractors to take photos/video of job sites when leaving. The price of external data storage is ridiculously small these days (recommended to keep data here instead of cluttering your computer's internal storage), especially in comparison to repair claims against you that are not your fault (and it also protects your reputation). Photos can be separated into folders named by the individual invoice number or client account number or whatnot for easy tracking. CYA.
    This goes for renters, too! Take pictures/video of everything when you move in. Take pictures/video of everything when you leave. Assume, and prepare for, the worst; and if things turn out well, you only suffered a minor inconvenience. (And if things go arse-over-teakettle, your arse is protected!)

    Interesting. The usa doesnt have lock out bolts where I live. There are master wafers used so a given cylinder has two bittings for a master key and tenant's key but rarely two locks with only one operable by the tenant’s key. From a decoding standpoint, that makes it easy to make master keys if you have one set of tenant keys but that is how it is done.

    Funny story on the leaving locks as you found them. In my first uni house, the estate agent was showing people around while we were still living there and all in the house. Good idea to take pictures as evidence. However, I put that days newspaper in shot because a pictures date/time stamp can be queried, but a current newspaper shows the pictures could not have been taken before it was published.

      Way back in the day long before digital photography the foreman had a film camera in the office, one that could time stamp. If we found damage on the network, usually caused by a contractor, (I used to work for LEB) we'd give him a call and he'd pop out and photograph it in case we needed evidence if it ended up in court. It was very common for the judge to demand to see the negatives to make sure the print hadn't been altered.

    If you need to take pictures that often, maybe it's worth investing in something like a theta 360 camera. Set it up in the middle of a room and remotely trigger it. Individual pictures don't always give you context of how they connect up to the other photos.

    When my Brother and his family moved out of their previous flat they estate agent tried to hold back the deposit because the carpets were not in a good state, the error with that was I had a week prior (after they had moved out) done a full vacuum and carpet clean throughout with the only spot being missed being where the fish take still was, plus the carpets were a million times better than the state of them when they moved in!
    Took a letter from my father (which they supposedly didn't read as it wasn't from the tenant) to get tehir cash back.
    Would have been fun if it ended up in court as when it comes to cleaning, my Dad's not only got a degree in it but has had to be an expert witness in court regarding cleaning when he worked for the council!

    Don't worry about snitching. I work in a bio med building that my company put in a bit for. Another company under bit us by a million dollars. Now, the company is paying my company to fix everything the other company messed up or did wrong. The first article of my electric code defines that all codes are to protect life and property. So, if making a building safe means snitching on another company, we will do so. Plus, it shows our integrity and strive for quality.

    maybe the fire panel has a long lasting lithium backup battery, vs old agm/sealed of 1/20th? possibly allowed with the plug marked as such. not in uk so who knows

    • @thomasesr
      @thomasesr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, every fire alarm I know comes with battery backup and it beeps annoyingly if it has no power, so I don't know what the issue is. How can a power plug, which even has built in fuse can be unsafe? I'm also not from the UK.

    • @Dont-come-at-me-24
      @Dont-come-at-me-24 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomas Richter because it’s plugged into a socket it’s should be wired directly in to a panel or if they wanted to go to a socket come off it with a fused spur. Also I wonder how it passed if at all

  • @thomasesr

    I'm not a professional on the UK, but what exactly is the problem with the power plug for the fire alarm system? I mean, I don't understand why it would be a problem unless there is a strict rule about it.

    • @thomasesr
      @thomasesr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A fire alarm as far as I know always comes with a battery backup and a no power alert. Even if someone were to unplug it from the socket it would, A still work fine and B start beeping about no power.

    • @Dont-come-at-me-24
      @Dont-come-at-me-24 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomas Richter yes but it would need to be reset to stop it beeping / flashing. Now on some panels it’s easy as turn key and press a button and turn back. On some you need a engineer code so the person installed it will have to come out and charge an hour labour + call out for a 10 sec job. Iam sure just like alarms it’s should have a uninterruptible power supply connection and have a power isolator / keyed service point
      If they just fitted a spur off that socket it would of been acceptable

    But you can guarantee, if something were to happen, and you knew about it, and didn't report it, you would be in the firing line. Let's face it, all this health and safety bollocks serves one propose, and that's to nail some poor bastard that made a mistake.

      It’s a wireless system , the sensors are battery powered so only the panel needs power and any booster/relay points fitted. Like it’s not hard to fit a spur in a pinch like this then going with a plug. Like while testing or having someone coming out to sort it at a later date would be okay but this info should be passed over

    Oh hell yes, Photograph everything.
    I come at it as a renter, but I've got about an hour of video footage from 'move in day' of every place I've ever rented.
    This is just common sense.
    RECORD EVERYTHING!

    Just gonna say, TH-cam was created on 14th Feb 2005. But I know what he means. Back then it was nowhere near as popular as it is now

    That may say not to unplug but it doesn't say not to switch off?
    Too bad you couldn't go back and say well you know it's not in compliance right?

    Wireless fire alarm, that would have cost the landlord a fortune! Shame about the standard it has been installed to

    When they quoted they probably didn't allow to do the mains and are waiting for the building owner to get the electrician in to do the mains , I would be interested to see if this is covered in there quote and there commisioning paperwork maybe worth checking all the facts first

    • @roydowling2542
      @roydowling2542 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      if they didn't quote to do the mains then they shouldn't have powered up the fire alarm panel. If anything happens the insurance won't cover the costs because the work isn't certified.

    I wonder why?? You will be under cut in price because of the invasion of artisans from other parts of the world that can live on a tenner, as to you as a businessman investing in your time and business. (You must report it because we don't want another Grenfell problem....) (Selling your time is a difficult business to be in) Please have Paul in your van more often, He tells as it is.... I love it.

    I would love to work with you as a spark for 3 months, just to learn real fast and feel like I know it all.
    Then at the end of the 3 months I'll probably have learned enough to realize I don't know shit about being a spark and I've got years ahead of me before I get decent.
    But I've already jumped ship so I'll just get the big *PHEW* rush that'll last me a good 20 minutes, totally worth it! (Yes, legal highs are harder to come by)

    Omg fire alarm on a plug top 🤣🤦‍♂️ never seen that before ! It’s just so unprofessional just to stick it on a plug considering how important it is . I’ve had to snitch today and feel bad but then like u say ur just doing your job . (Just shown it to my dad who’s been a sparky for 40 yrs & he just laughed 🤣🤭 )

    To be fair no one knows the story on the fire alarm, but even glanding into the socked backplate is better than that.
