The H&K G3 was a tremendously prolific rifle that was produced mainly in Germany, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Pakistan and of course, the US copy by PTR industries. It was adapted and used in even more places around the world, and even 50+ year old relics have been seen in operation in war-torn Africa and the Middle east.
The roller delayed blowback system was developed in WW2, refined by CETME in Spain and later by Heckler & Koch. The same system that would give birth to the famous MP5.
There have been many who are skeptical about the iron sights on the G3, and some who doubt it's effectiveness when compared to more contemporary SR25 and FAL type rifles, but how does it do on range?
We found some German MEN 7.62NATO surplus, to pair with our G3 clone / PTR91 with no optical attachments to see how it does...

We're seeing some guys who consider the AR10 as a major cold war battle rifle. I specifically mentioned the much more prolific SR25 (produced in the 90's) and not the AR10 (which in the early Cold War, was not produced in significant numbers)
We've talked about this at length in our M110 video, but the original AR10 is absolutely not an SR25. Significant development took place before the system took shape as an SR25.
It's true that the OG AR10 were used by the Portuguese Paras, but the amount produced were so insignificant compared to the G3, M14 and FAL that it's hard to call it one of the major battle rifles. In fact majority G3's in Africa are Portuguese FMP produced G3's, and in fact we will cover the Portuguese military unit's widespread deployment of the G3 and subsequent modernization in a later video.
It would be like saying that the FG42 was a major small arm in WW2.
- Was the FG42 deployed with such effect that it shaped the fighting in WW2? -> No. To few were produced and too few were fielded.
- Was the FG42 an interesting design that had potential? -> Yes, and in fact it influenced the later M60 GPMG that had wide fielding in the US... still, the FG42 is not a "major rifle" fielded in WW2, and neither is the AR10 a "major battlerifle" fielded during the Cold War.
Guys for 500m you turn this back to first setting and eyeball it with tracers untill you get used to it and than switch back to normal ammo or just use the G3 ZF 😉
Indeed the closest match is probably the CETME and the most reasonable US point of reference has to be the M14, which did see significant battlefield usage.
Put a PWS FSC 91 or OSS Bannar brake, tungsten bolt carrier, and a heavier buffer and recoil spring and it will be even more controllable.
Greetings from New Mexico. I am a guy with aging eyes. I have an early PTR 91 I would like to set it up with a red dot. what can be had for a suitable rail that will allow for a proper cheek weld? Really hard to find anything suitablesince the stock is so straight line.

I used the G3 during my military service with the German army. Even with very limited training on the G3 I was able to do good results up to 400m. That rifle is so easy to use, the sight is easy to understand and when you take it, it simply fits. You can drop it in the mud or sand it still works. Maybe not as good as the famous AK47 but more precise. With a proper scope you can use it even up to 800m+.

800+ feels like a bolt-action realm. Maybe it's possible, but like 500 yards with a Krink.
I can assure you it is much better than an AK in the mud. AK's are absolutely terrible when it comes to that kind of reliability. What AK's are really famous for is their ability to go long periods of time without cleaning and their performance in artic conditions. This is due to their low tolerances and large controls.

any 308 platform is capable of 900m+ shots. it's effective max range is around 970 or 980. I've seen hunters use the PTR-91 clone of the g3 to drop deer out to around 850. it's entirely possible and with training is easy.
Used it in the Swedish army while others were using the FN FNC 5.56 at the same time. They were destroying us at 100 metres. But once we got up to 200 and 300 metres, they were struggling and we were just hitting our stride having figured out how to deal with the heavier rifle. Also we found out that unlike 5.56... 7.62 is a little like having wall or tree hack. You can shoot people through things with it a lot easier.

I lived with G3 for 21 months. When I was a "Tofangdar" (Marine) in the Iranian Navy during the military service , G3 is one of the most ridiculous weapons and it is very heavy with a stupid kick, but is very accurate and you can easily hit Sibel at a distance of 600 meters without a camera on the gun

The 200 peep sight is used from 0-200m for precision shots. The 100m marked V notch is used "at night", during close quarter combat like in urban terrain or to fight off the adversary when he tries to storm your position.
The default setting during daylight in defensive position is 200. Soldiers change settings on their own or on orders.

ZDV 3/13 is the german army G3 manual.
The ammunition will shoot about 6cm" high at 50m, 8 high at 100, 6 cm at 150 and spot on at 200m for the 200m setting.

As a long time user of the AG-3 (Norwegian version of the G3) I can only say that people underestimate the iron sights. The drum sights are fantastic. It is a shame that the HK416 that I had to change to does not have them... But then again, I have not had a military rifle without some kind of optics since 2005. So might be my nostalgia that gets me.

@@Rakadis I wonder which ACOG model was used? I use a TA33 ACOG on my kit built G3...not bad, but I like the reticle on the Hensoldt Z24 scopes better (although the eye relief kind of sucks; it is too short).

Drum sight is my favourite to be completely honest. If I have to use irons, drums are my go to choice.
I bought a H&K G91 brand new for $500 in 83.Lived on a farm, got to shoot it whenever I wanted. Unbelievably accurate for a sheet metal rifle. Moved to town , never got to shoot it, so I sold it at a gun show for $600 and bought this thing called a Glock 19 that was supposed to be the handgun of the future. I just know that 91 is still banging in someone’s hands, somewhere...
You can get a nice CETME for around $500. Party is not over!

Anyone else remember after sandy hook how dudes were buying guns just to get the magazines they came with! I sold all my old magazines to dudes that I worked with at 30$ each bec everyone else was charging $50-75/each. It took about 18mo for the market to stabilize and manufacturing to catch up with demand. Guns got slightly cheaper during that mag and ammo run bec of the scarce ammo & mags.

@@AlphaChimpEnergy I didn’t bother, I’m building a CETME modelo 58 C right now and I test anything I own by running steel cased ammunition through them first. As if a gun can’t run steel, it doesn’t deserve to run brass; and I would need to trouble shoot whatever issues it was having.
The G3 is an excellent weapon, I lugged one around for a couple of decades. The Norwegian Army only fairly recently phased it out, but it is still the main combat rifle in the Home Defence units. The combat sight is the 200 diopter and soldiers are trained to "forlegg" the sights in accordance to the range (and direction of movement). When the 200 diopter is used the projectile trajectory crosses the sight line at 30m and 200m. The Norwegian Army therefore had/has lots and lots of 30m ranges. The Germans I believe use a 100m range and balance the centre ball of the target on the top of the foresight. For targets over 300m it is obviously better to use the 300 or 400 diopter. The open 100 sight is for night firing or when light conditions are too poor for a diopter sight. The effective range is up to 400 as the video adequately demonstrates.
The Home Guard has changed to HK416 as well now.

Again my old service rifle featured in your video, I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as I did 23 years ago. We shot the G3 with iron sights at 400m every time we went to the shooting range.

@@destroyerarmor2846 FWIW , I have a PTR 32 , basically a G3 in 762x39 and it shoots circles around my Bulgarian milled AK . The design lends itself to some pretty good accuracy. I qualified with the G3 back in the 80’s and shot it better than my issued M16.

Great video and great shooting, too, guys. Here's the deal on the sights on the HK91/G3/PTR-91: The V-notch rear sight is designed for snap-shooting at relatively close ranges, and as you note - anytime when rapid target acquisition is paramount. Although the v-notch looks different than the 200m aperture (#2), they are both zeroed the same, to the 200m battle-sight zero used for 7.62x51 M80 Ball. That's for use inside 300m, where you switch to the "3" setting, then "4." German doctrine was that using one of these settings, plus the required hold-under or over, an infantryman could get on target against an enemy soldier at any range between 0-600m.
When the Germans got a hold of the Spanish CETME, the precursor to the H&K G3, they did some things right in modifying that design for their use - and one of them was to improve the ghastly iron sights found on the Spanish design.
Ken Royce, a.k.a. "Boston" of "Boston's Gun Bible" fame, has done exhaustive testing of all of the main Cold War battle rifles, as well as some designs prior to and after that. In his view, the iron sights on the G3 were a mixed bag. The front blade was easy to pick up and well-protected, but it takes a tool to adjust it and it offers only elevation adjustment and not windage. The rear sight drum, he found to be mediocre. Not securely-attached enough - only one screw - plus apertures too small, and only out to 400m. The practical combat range of the cartridge being at least twice that distance, albeit probably not with iron sights - most would use an optic. He liked the surplus Cold War-era Zeiss-Hensoldt 4x fixed power optic, however, calling it "an outstanding piece of kit" which was practically zeroed upon installation. Royce also hated the factory/OEM trigger, which comes in at about 10-12 lbs. with tons of creep and over-travel. It really impeded his performance on timed, scored testing with the rifle - but Henry, it didn't seem to hold you back. You shot very well with the PTR-91.
Boston panned the lousy, outdated ergonomics of the rifle, and hated the charging handle location and lack of a last shot bolt hold-open, but confessed that he'd recently bought a genuine H&K 91, as his "end of the world" rifle, thanks to its unmatched toughness, durability and reliability even when abused and dirty.
It has been 2 years since i touched a g3, as it was my weapon as ground infantry. My first weapon as a fresh recruit was a gun made in 72, rollers basically worn down, and the sights were stuck to 2nd pos. I hated shooting that thing. About a week of me trying to shoot it i went to the armory with permission and asked a new one.: With that weapon i got my marksmanship star and fell in love . Recoil never aeemed to bother me as i have fired shotguns before, even normal ones are quite accurate, military trigger, meaning its pretty hard, but doesn't feel that bad. My only concern with the rifle was the length of pull: it was quite long that after a while of aiming it gets really tiring

My favorite rifle. Love it, served with it and the mg3 loved them both 😊. Normaly you keep it at 200 meters and just shift your sight point. You learn this normaly in a day. It levels with battle amo at 30m and 200m. I have fired this at -42C and after dragging it through mud looking like hell. It never fails.
Used both the FN FAL and the HK G3 in the Rhodesian bush war. G3 was lighter, shorter, softer recoil and kicked strait into the shoulder. I thought it was the better of the 2
EDIT Contacts were almost always less than 50 yards so aiming wasn't an issue. I think our G3s were of Portuguese origin.

This is still used today for basic training in the Portuguese Armed Forces. This was what I used in 90's during basic training.
We took a few of them to Iraq in 04, despite the fact that we wore using the G36. I always had a G3 in my vehicle as a backup. The G3 takes down those Iraq walls easy, and didn't hide behind them anymore when they realized chunks of the wall was coming down.
I used G3 while in German Military in early 1970. This rifle with open " peep sights " were extremely accurate." Fold down stock " type were issued to Parra Troopers.
If G3s had a bolt hold open mag and a bolt release button I would never make an argument for any other .308. The looks are so spot on and evidently they are plenty accurate.
Instead you get to do the amazing HK slap. And on this gun not only is it loud, you truly feel it.
But boy was it good to shoot.

They are service rifle of the last century accurate. I imagine a bolt hold open would be tricky with that massively heavy bolt.
The thing is, it isn't even something that can't be engineered into the platform. MP5s in 40S&W and 10mm were built with LRBHO per request from the FBI. At this point, the major killing factor for the platform is weight/expense, not the inherent limitations. Many of the currently-appreciated aspects of the AR-15 were reverse-engineered in to the rifles decades later.
I feel like Josh is getting better at spotting. Seems a lot more consistent with he observation terms.
Getting a better spotting setup certainly has made things easier (thanks Vortex). It's still incredibly difficult spotting through a camera viewfinder as opposed to through the actual optic as you normally would. Pre-9 Hole, I'd done all my spotting and calls working with optics and measurements (mils). So it's been a unique challenge going from calling mil corrections and wind for familiar calibers, to having to be able to communicate consistently with a shooter who's only using iron sights (and in some cases shooting cartridges neither of us are familiar with in terms of performance in wind etc). Been a learning process for sure. - Josh
@@9HoleReviews I can see how that'd be a big adjustment. I never really thought too much about the camera/spotting scope setup too much either but now I'm think that the screen probably gets washed out in the bright light pretty often too. Keep up the great work, I absolutely love this channel.

As a Portuguese guy who served in the military and used this rifle extensively,i always put it in a pedestal,it's our service weapon and has been for a very long time,and mind you we use the old models,like very old battle rifles who have seen combat in Africa.....and still,with love and care,they perform wonderfully,these are in my opinion,one of the best rifles ever designed for combat,they are rugged,they are durable,they pack a really strong punch,they are reliable,accurate....it's just an awesome weapon,if i found myself in a combat situation i would gladly choose the HKG3 as a weapon of choice to fight.

Back in the early ‘80s I owned a HK 93, the non-auto version of the G3. Had to sell it during hard times though and is one regret I’ll never get over. I had mounted a Leopold scope and loved that rifle! Loved this video too👍

The C308's that have the welded rail on the top are actually built by PTR now. The C308 actually has a PTR receivrer, PTR barrel and is assembled at the PTR factory. Century had so many issues (like you said), that they ultimately just paid PTR to take over and do it for them, and that's why the C308 is actually not bad now. It has a different rear site, and they are built out of old parts kits-- But I tend to like the C308 now. The real PTR's are much cleaner though, without a doubt.
I bought one a couple years ago. It seems to work quite well. Of course, with this last stimulus check, I had to buy a Vector V93 to go with it. Thanks, Sniffer Joe.

Mine worked perfectly after it and me got kicked around in the dirt by a bull.
I did have to send it back to get the bent cocking tube replaced though.
@John David Jacobs I put an after market mag release. Its like a paddle mag release, except it pivots left to right, instead of front to back like the old HK style. It's really only made for right hand shooters; but on the right side/ there's already another mag release button for left handed shooters, so it works out fine. There isn't any modifying, it just fits onto the shaft of the existing mag button and hangs down; it was like $60. Had "Texas in the name of it, I forget what its called now.

This was awesome to watch...and not one silly, whiny complaint about the trigger!
For those who don't know, the "V"- Notch setting and the 200 meter setting actually have the same point of aim (although obviously, the sight pictures will look different). With proper holdover, that V-Notch sight can be used not just at 100 meters and in, but pretty easily on torso sized targets at 182 m (200 yards) or even 274 meters (300 yards), depending on how you choose to zero your rifle.
G3 was my standard rifle in the german army and i love it. I also tried the G36 and some others. But G3 is still my favorite in terms of precision (stock visor), penetration power and reliability. Also it hasnt those weird plastic mags, but solid metal parts all over the place. Just feels right...

We used the G3A3 in the Greek army for almost 40 years. Last month they announced that it will be retired. Awesome gun, really sturdy and very reliable.
Its "cousin" the HK11 is amazing as well.
I had the G3 in Bundeswehr base training back in 2001. We were only allowed about 10 shots with real ammunition in the one range shooting we had in these two months.
After base training we got G36.

When i did my national service, as a panzergrenadier we got to shoot the G3 a lot, until i ended up with the Mg3. I didnot mind cleaning the gun, 1984/85 was a hell of a time to be in the Bundeswehr.
@@dexm2010 That I don't know. I was with the SanÜbZentrum and we were training the medical units like KrKw-Züge (medicaid transportation units) and the doctors that had to go to Kosovo (KFOR/SFOR). And the Sani were always a special branch.

Sights set for metres is not an obstacle for 95 % of Earth's inhabitants - and ~100 % of military users of the G3.
My brother was -among other things- a sniper in the German KSK in the 90s, and he used a standard issue G3 without scopes. They did training exercises called "tea bag shooting" (Teebeutelschießen) where they would actually shoot a hanging tea bag at an 800m (meters) distance. I was in one of the last mandatory drafts from the cold war era in Germany and was issued a G3 myself (it was an old beater from the 60s though). Memories. Cheers! ;-)
I shot a AG3 as a conscript in 2007. As a REMF with extremely limited combat training and range time, I still was comfortable shooting and maintaining this magnificent thing. Easy to maintain, easy to shoot. 10/10 would outfit a conscript army with this again.
The G3 (or AG3 to us Norwegians) is the best weapon I've ever shot. If I had to go to war today, that would be my weapon of choice. It's a real cannon. Recoil is soft and the hitting power is just awesome. It is heavy, but very precise, very robust, and simple to maintain. I love it! I used it for several years and it never failed me. Regarding the relative like/dislike of the G3/CETME design, it is ironic that of the "big three" Cold War MBRs, the U.S. M-14, the Belgian FN FAL, and the German G3, the G3 has lasted the longest as a general issue military rifle. The FAL was adopted by more nations, some ninety or so, but only a handful of countries now still use FALs - India, Argentina, and Brazil. Only three factories in the world make FALs, one in India (Ishapore), Brazil (Imbel) and DSA in the U.S. The G3 was adopted by fifty or so nations during the Cold War, but still remains in wide use today, including in Iran, Pakistan, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Denmark, Norway, to name a few.
The CETME/G3 has its critics, but those designers must have done something right - because it is a well-liked, even loved, weapon by many of the men who carried it or still do today. The Bundeswehr uses it as a DMR, designated marksman rifle, in Afghanistan, and also for some of its dedicated sniper force.

Former german air force NCO here who used one of these for a few years. Your explanation at 10:00 fits the numbers on the rear sight, but the actual training within the armed forces disagrees with that. We were taught to use the v notch only at night and/or in bad visibility situations at short distances. For anything else up to 200 m (~ 220 yd) we were instructed to use the '2' peep sight and aim below (at approximately 100 m, 150 m distance) or, for about 200 m, right on target. This was complemented with training to quickly reacquire point of aim on an unknown or previously abused rifle with bad zero.

Fun fact: the director used the actual sounds the guns made during the big downtown shooting scene since he wanted the reverberations off the buildings to be included. As a result it's one of the most accurate sounding gunfight scenes in a movie.

Watched it on a big sourround setup and i thought the mixing was off because quiet scenes were very quiet in comparison to the loud scenes but no: it was just mixed realistic haha. I had to manage it myself a little bit because my girlfriend found it to be way to loud in comparison. Gotta watch it again with the boys on full blast 👍🏻
Love the irons on my PTR. Took a bit of getting used to but once I did they really grew on me. The FAL does not get my affection like the G3 (PTR91) dos. It is a serious weapon that works well. Get the PTR for a little more money. PTR doesn’t screw around. Worth it. I bought it and it just kept growing on me. The pic rail is awesome. Putting a scope on it really helped me unlock its accuracy. At 300 yards which is my range’s furthest steel, I can hit the target almost every shot.
Having served with a G3: It only has one shortcoming... Once you get comfortable with it (because the recoil isn't sharp) you tend to get sloppy with the shoulder contact. And this is the thing it does not like. You will get reload malfunction if you do not jam it properly into your shoulder.
That being said, it is a fantastic shooting rifle. I used to do 198-200pts at 300m all-day-every-day. And those were 12.5cm/5" centers. Even with modern advances I would be more than happy with this rifle if I ever went back into service. There are a lot of good things to be said for the intermediate cartridge, but the good ol' 7.62 NATO will always have the "that doesn't constitute cover"-trick up it's sleeve...

during my mandatory military service in germany 1990 i used the G3. On the sighting system we were told.. "use the V-Notch during night or bad vivibility or for fast target aquisition. If you have the oportunty to aim proper use the 200m peep hole for anything up to 250m ... minimal adjustment for elvation is needed then"... and it worked fine

Mine was from 1969 in the german army and shot real good. never failed me up to 200m. And i loved to instruct on it for 3 yaears, and than the G36 came... -.- It was like changing from a weapon for men to a toy gun.
Whenever i had the choice on guard duty between the two, i allways was going for my G3.
I’m running the Ak-5C in the Swedish National Guard. The rifle is loved for it’s relative precision and reliability, but it’s hated because it’s heavy and cumbersome. It eventually wears down even the strongest soldier. The Swedish Armed Forces put the Aimpoint red dot on all the rifles because of state corruption. The iron sights were satisfactory.
Finally the PTR 91. Been waiting along time for the light barreled model. Good shooting. I love my PTR's. It shoots 1.5 to 2 moa all day long. With a scope (primary arms 5x acss) it hits targets to 600yds. Good enough. Use malaysian 308.
When I heard you mention the issues with Century Arms CETME rifle offerings and how they turned a lot of people off from HK rifles, I wanted to mention my experience with them. My understanding is the first CETME builds were junk, but the C308 Sporters were better.
After Century Arms realized they can barely build an AK from a parts kit, they realized the CETME was WAY above their ability after their initial solo CETME attempt and they teamed up with PTR91. Their collaboration, resulting in the C308 Sporter, either wasn't a bad rifle, or I lucked out and got an exceptionally good one, especially for the money.
I bought one from a friend for $400 who bought it new, fired 20 rounds through it and never touched it again. It was horribly unreliable, having several FTE every magazine. I checked the rollers and it was within spec, so I bought a new German manufactured extractor and spring, and after over 1000 rounds I haven't had a single malfunction using both CETME and G3 mags.
Since Century used parts kit surplus furniture, cocking handle and bolt, but new manufactured PTR91 trigger housing and mechanism, receiver and barrel, I've found it to be much more accurate than I expected. It's not anything like my sub-MOA long range AR builds, but with a basic battle rifle I'm getting sub-2" 5-shot groups using S. African ball ammo with a Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x mil dot scope. I'm going to send the trigger housing/mechanism to Bill Springfield for an action job and his overtravel elimination, then try my handloads and some factory match ammo to see how tight I can get it to group. But as it is, it very easily outshoots my Standard Grade Springfield Armory M1A using a SA scope mount and the same Leupold scope I'm using to test my C308 Sporter right now.
For a $400 initial investment, an extractor replacement, 20 surplus CETME mags and 60 aluminum G3 mags when found them in bulk for less than $3 each, I really can't complain about my first HK rifle. I've shot many select fire HK's: HK91, HK51, HK51B, MP5, MP5K, etc, but this C308 Sporter is the first one I've personally owned and spent any real time on, and I'm very happy with it so far.
Oh, and if anyone has an issue with extraction and/or ejection on your C308 Sporter, don't waste your time calling Century Arms. When I called I was asked what ammo I was using and I told them the truth. It was a mix of S. African ball, Winchester USA 147gr ball, ZQ1 ball and Lake City surplus ball. The genius from Customer "Service" said it was an ammo issue. He claimed that HK fluted chambers were designed to use, and only function with, steel cased ammo. I obviously threw the BS flag on that one after shooting many thousands of rounds over the years of brass cased surplus ball in my friend's full autos, but he insisted and refused to accept the rifle for repairs, not that Century Arms could fix jack shit anyway.
So just for the hell of it, I waited a few weeks and called Century CS again. This time when they asked what ammo I was using, I told them steel case Wolf 147gr ball. They again told me it was an ammo issue, because with HK fluted chambers you can't shoot anything but high quality brass case ammo! I should have called back again and told them I was shooting a mix of steel and brass cases. They wouldn't know what to do!
But basically, in my long winded post, my C308 Sporter is as good of a shooter grade HK-based rifle as the comparable PTR91 rifles that two of my friends own. And honestly, I'd take any one of our three aftermarket rifles over the old original HK91 rifles three of my other friends bought new back in the 80's and 90's, back when I could only dream of having enough money to buy one. I'd rather have mine because of the Picatinny rail PTR91 puts on their receivers. If youre happy with shooting irons, great. But if you want to use a dot, dot/magnifier combo, or a magnified scope, the PTR91 rail is far superior to the rediculous claw scope mount two of my friends use on their old HK91's. And the two PTR91 rifles and, after my extractor and spring replacement, my C308 Sporter are all as reliable as the original HK91's. I'm sure there are collectors, purists or just HK snobs that will turn up their noses at our aftermarket rifles, especially my Century/PTR91 monstrosity, but I'm a shooter and as long as it functions reliably and shoots accurately, I enjoy it more than an expensive original rifle that has an inferior scope mounting system.
I’m an American Gen X’er that grew up with HK-91s. I’ve always had mad respect for the G3 platform over the other Cold War MBRs. During the US Army trials back in the day they found the G3 was more reliable in dust/dirt/sand/and mud tests than the M-14 and the FAL. Also they concluded that at the armorer level the G3 would have a longer service life than the M-14 and the FAL. On his website Larry Vickers states the FAL is his favorite MBR but that the G3 is the more robust of the three.
After using....no..... eating, breathing, sleeping and shitting with the G3 for years in the army, I can honestly say it is a the ultimate superlative battle rifle. The only downside is initially until you can get used to it, its weight of 4.4 kilos starts to feel 20 kilos in basic training. Once you get used to it however, the accuracy with iron sites is incredible. It is also piss easy to strip down and clean and rebuild blindfolded. The only variables when using it is the type of ammo and the environment and weather. If i were the dictator of a third world country where I knew the rifles would be abused and still be expected to work with bare min. maintenance....then the G3 is definitely the go to Western block rifle I would choose. I also love the Eastern bloc Ak's however they definitely aren't as accurate as the G3, but are on par with reliability

Great review. I remember my AG3 from the Norwegian Army in 19991. We did a lot of target practice on 200-300m (220-330y). And of course, we had to take it apart and together again with mittens. It is a lot of cold weather and snow in Norway. The G3 is easy to shoot with, even for people with little to no experience.
I guess since when i was a kid my dad putting a hk-91 on a bipod and letting me shoot it at the age of 7 gave me a deep love for this style of 308/7.62×51 ya my dad was hardcore but made me learn the ins and outs of firearms at a very young age a gift that i will always cherish not many people started as young as i did and i thank him for it rip dad your gifts to me were the best

We had these G3 in the Norwegian Army back in 2000. Awesome rifle. Very easy to adjust things, but the internals are a bit tricky to take apart and clean. We would practice taking everything apart and putting it back together so many times. We only had iron sights as well. We were told to keep it in the 200 m setting normally.

Love this debrief, when I bought my c308 I had to check it before I bought and did my research on two different factories made it and the one in Georgia did the best at reassembling these
I've lusted after and owned a few Non HK-made HK91/ Semi-auto G3 rifles over the years. I like the PTR offerings. Handled a newer (2016-build I think) C308 with some PTR made components and still wasnt impressed with fitment and integration. Plus the internals are all old CETME guts. And not replacable with modernized HK G3 parts.
I have had a few issues with PTRs as well. But after fire lapping the bores they seem to behave more accurately.
One thing, I believe the "!" V-notch is still zeroed at 200 yards, it just allows more awareness of the environment nearby. The G3 was meant to be zeroed at 200 meters or yards, depending on who you ask. The bullet will be about 1.5" high at 100yards if using the V-notch or "2" aperture. The "2" aperture is meant to be used at 200, the "3" at 300 and the "4" at 400, and each is reportedly calibrated to reflect bullet drop at those ranges. Surprisingly the MEN, German NATO 7.62x51 ammo wasn't more accurate. I've had some MEN ammo and it seems well made, but not ideal for accuracy.
I don't normally shoot that far, sticking to around 50-100yards and I am somewhat accurate with the irons, which are light-years ahead of the V-notch of ANY AK derivative. The G3 sights are almost like a poor-man's holosight. but still a challenge for my eyes. I can just see better with a red-dot type sight with my aging eyes. Currently an MFI low profile mini-rail is epoxied onto my bare GI receiver (which I discovered is slightly canted left) with a Sig Romeo 5 red dot, without the riser. Seems to work. But the Co-witness is not perfect. And since the receiver is canted a bit, the lower the optic is mounted ,the better, and it wont have a massively different zero from the irons. I can look through my irons and the Sig-dot glass if my battery dies.
Your opening borrowing footage from "Heat" was brilliant. That was one of the dumbest movie scenes with a G3 I've ever watched. And about every movie scene featuring a G3 is painful to watch because either the operator is a dumbass or a badguy, or the gun fails or gets dumped. Tremors...6 or whatever at thehell at North Pole is an exception...but Burt Gummer is a douche. In reality we all know the G3 is the God Gun and every other gun should just bow down and worship it.
The original CETME rifles from Century were hot garbage. But the newer C308's are actually GTG. It's a Cetme kit, but with a PTR receiver and barrel and its actually welded/assembled by PTR as well. It's a different rear and front sight, but basically most other parts are relatively interchangeable. I've had 0 issues with mine thus far. The PTR 91 is a bit more carefully made with better fit and finish and paddle release mags. but when the C308 launched you could get them for under 700 if you got a good deal.
The C308 has the original CETME style rear sight. The rotating drum sight is one of the minor changes HK made when they began building the G3. Also, it's the easiest way to tell a G3/HK91/PTR91 from a CETME/C308.

Why does everyone hate on the C308? Mine shoots beautifully! I practice at 500 yds. With no issues! I asked Century Arms why people were dissing its accuracy. The reply was “it has more to do with the Indian and not the arrow”! I love my C308!!
PS. I wish they would have left the original German rear sight ion it but my iron sights work just fine out to 500yds.

I fell in love with an HK ad in a magazine back in the '80s. It was a full page and featured 91s, 93s, and 94s...photographed in lovely low amber lighting.... all lounging languorously on some burlap draped packing crates in some tropical warehouse...I stared at and studied that magazine page....Like.....Well, like one does....I was maybe 11 years old and I truly fell in love with HK....a love so strong that its survived the few things that I've had to make myself overlook, over the years, and the few times where we've, unfortunately...disagreed.
Have an un-zeroable century build. Hopefully one day I will find an actual cetme gun

Ex German army. Learned shooting with the G3 and at the very end transitioned to the G36. Loved them,
