Make no mistake: the Martini-Henry series of rifles were a wonder of their time. This example was from 1872, one of the first Martini-Henry Mk I rifles fielded by the British Empire. Note that this was less than a decade from the ending of the US Civil War (1861-1865).
Since then, the Martini-Henry has been a symbol of the British global might and widely seen on pop culture referencing the Victorian Era.
The use of a metal cartridge was revolutionary for the time and significantly increased the firepower for soldiers on the field. The weapon was designed to be fielded with companies and battalions of men, against companies and battalions of opponents. It was designed with conquest and expeditionary forces in mind.
For us today, the Martini-Henry's capabilities are shrouded in mystery. How accurate are they? How reliable are they? How fast are they?
Finally, after a year of learning, replicating period munitions, testing, more reading and learning... we finally publish our Martini Henry Practical Accuracy video. Thanks to Rob, from British Muzzleloaders for his guidance and expertise in this era of arms!

Is the performance indicative of the system or perhaps just this individual rifle ?
Given the provenance, I'd wager this rifle has seen a tremendous amount of service.

For those interested, the owl appears to be a Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) As for the shooting, while the accuracy is what it is on an old black powder rifle like that, the authority with which the cartridge strikes the target out at 500 yards is impressive.
Its called a big ole' 480 grain slug 👍

That debrief was extremely interresting. I knew that volley fire had a much longer effective range than individual aimed fire, but I never would have guessed that they would engage at 1200 yards with blackpowder rifles and be effective.

@@Cloudman572 Yeah they were. 24th Regiment of Foot later became the South Wales Borderers. They've always been a Welsh Regiment.
@@TheShreddedSnorlax No they were not, this is a common myth. At Rorkes Drift the regiment was the 24th of Foot also called the 2nd Warwickshire Regiment. The majority of soldiers were English.
That the regiment later on was based at Brecon and renamed The South Wales Borderers is true but has nothing to do with the fact that it was an English regiment at Rorkes Drift.
@@Cloudman572 Accept the regiment had been based at Brecon for 6 years by the time of Rorkes Drift and mainly recruited from Brecknockshire, Monmouthshire, and Herefordshire. Most of the 2nd battalion 24th as a whole were Welsh, and I think it was more or less equal in the case of B Company.
And in any case It would've been a British regiment, not a English one.

I love the pressure of we only made 30 rounds.
I am glad I watched to the end to get the discussion about volley fire and the utility of formation shooting. Particularly in the era of super accurate firearms, we tend to forget that the effectiveness of individual firepower is a relatively recent historical phenomenon and that so much depended on coordinated drill and unit discipline well into the early 20th century. You probably could have armed Dabulamanzi's impi entirely with Martini Henrys and it wouldn't have positively affected the outcome for them as their experience in the manual of arms would not have made them effective.

That rifle is brutal on the shoulders. I am amazed that the defenders at Rorke's Drift were able to use their rifles near continuously in combat for 24 hours.
They were out of action for 3 wks due severe bruising of shoulders and backs.

Quite the weapon, great shooting and commentary, never realised how much blow-back/debris/powder those cartridges had, be interesting if you'd had a white glove on, saved it and do 200 rounds (or however many shots fired during an attack), a detail missed by the movies about how messy that aspect got. I'd love to see the same test up to 300yds standing, just my curiosity and I imagine that Martini would wear you out pretty quickly. Awesome video guys, thank you!
Thank you for the kind words! I do think there is a lot of forgotten knowledge on warfare that continues to amaze us as we delve into historical firearms and get to live a tiny slither of the life those hard men lived.

I'm super jealous. I was in Afghanistan 2010-11 and my unit didn't even give us the option to bring back any of the antiques. I still remember the many weapons we captured along with the caches found by prior units one if them being a martini henry and that sat up on the wall of Fob Boris DFAC along with a few Jezails. I still remember that rifle and I wish I could've brought it back. Years later I bought one from IMA that is pretty beat up that I still haven't gotten around to shooting just yet. Anyways I'm glad you got to bring one of those Afghan Martini-Henry's back home. Hats off to you freind

One thing that was really visible was when the projectile hit the target. More movement then modern rounds' Hits like a mule kick is the expression I'd use.
Big chunk of slow moving lead vs. little chunk of fast moving, much flatter shooting lead. Results, same.
Imagine.577 loaded with Smokeless and with a vintage scope. Brutal
Imagine the recoil on that though, as far as ballistics you'd probably be getting worse than 45-70 just because of the bullet shape and weight

It would become unmanageable and fail a proof test. It's one hell of a big case and its bottle necked, while the action is possibly one of the strongest ever made the barrel has metallurgy for BP loads. You can however rebarrel Martini actions in some very stout modern cartridges. If you look at the likes of .458 SOCOM its got almost identical balistics, for the same tactical reasons.
I use 25 grains of sr4759 powder, walnut media to fill the empty space a piece of paper to separate the two an a 500 grain paper patch bullet. Kicks like a 45-70 and burns CLEAN....
This goes right next to IV8888's vid on Martini Henry at 600. Awesome stuff, you dont get many hits but somehow, that doesn't matter, it's still a awesome day out on the range and massive fun.

Great video, chaps. When I came back from my first tour in Kabul in '05, I walked through customs with a Martini in one hand and an Enfield muzzleloader in the other. Traded the former to my cousin's ex for work on my Sunfire (he's big into black powder, goes to nationals most years) and the latter for a No.1 Mk III*. The more I think about it, the more I'm sure my Martini was a Khyber Pass copy.
Brother huge respect for getting your hands dirty with the rifle. Few will do what you have done as it’s just filthy.
Robs advice is solid. The only thing I’d add is modern knowledge and techniques to control fouling.
The bore needs to be wiped with bore pigs or patches on a fitted jag. Each shot should be made on a nearly perfectly clean and dry barrel.
As to blow tubbing, in the southwest blow tubing only works when the humidity is above about 40%. So wiping is the only way.
Ammonia free windex works great. I did see a similar product being used.
But basically any water based cleaner (Murphys oil soap diluted) would work.
