    Reminds me of the very similar, yet slightly larger FX-706 & '-707' foam chuck gliders that were mass-marketed online about 2 - 3yrs ago. I had bought 2 of them after seeing CA coastal slope guys flying & modding them; they had a span of 1.2meter and a slightly 'thicker' airfoil. They were EPP too.
    They were(...sometimes still are..) selling for ~$21 bux on eBay and Banggood--which varied depending on which vendor ad you answered. I knew guys who got really lucky and got them @$13 each...not incl .shipping, but S&H evaporated IF you bought other swag to total more than $100 bux.
    As far as removing warps? My gliders were shipped in long cardboard boxes--very thin walled, but with printed graphics of playing children--all wings were fine, but BOTH fuselages had unacceptable 'banana' warps! I made careful, longitudinal slits down the fuselages in a tripartite, circumferential pattern(..10:00 o'clock...2:00 o'clock....and 6:00 o'clock..)--then inserted flat bamboo strips taken from some dinner mats as longerons. I used foaming glue & created an alignment jig (row of nails in a board)...to 'twist-&-hold' the fuselage straight while the glue set, securing the bamboo strips in place. Quite a lot of extra work for otherwise quality 'chuckies'...and I made a lot of further mods(..T-tail, clear canopy & increased wingspan..) while I was at it. Very satisfied!

      Hi Anton!
      I love these type of gliders for conversion.
      I may have come across the FX-706 recently, at least I think I came across that one.
      I'll have to take a 2nd look.
      I'm going to be putting some carbon down the length of the fuselage to prevent tail flexing and I was surprised this one had only one small bend in the fuselage given it was shipped in a bag.
      I hope my 2nd one fairs as well.
      Tons of fun with these large chuck gliders.
      This is the largest one I've been able to pull the trigger on so far.
      See you in the Air!

      Hi John and thank you much!

      I've been searching for a larger glider for quite some time and could finally pull the trigger on one ;-)

  • @1mikeb

    I'm looking forward to your results. My local hobby shop has that glider but I was afraid the wings were too thin and would twist in flight even with a spar, even though mine will have way less thrust than yours. An ESC I'm using is the 15a ztw Mantis, only 8g complete. I'm using one on a 3s plane with a br2212, 1400kv and 7040 prop, pulling 12a, and 4- 9g servos. It's been completely dependable so far.

    • @GroundControlRC
      @GroundControlRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mike and thank you!
      It does have some pretty thin wings and should be a very efficient airframe.
      Your setup sounds nice for a single motor setup.
      Those BR2212 1400kv motors are great workhorses for planes and I have several.
      I will most likely add a second spar near the trailing edge of the wing to prevent too much warping and flexing.
      It's going to be a very fun project when I can get to it and I'm very much looking forward to this project.
      See you in the Air!

      @1mikeb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GroundControlRC Yep, can't wait to see the results. I'll probably use two br1206s with 2s with my conversion, 1:1 thrust (I'm a more gentile flier than you🙂). Did you chuck your glider in stock configuration to get CG? Or how will you find it?

    • @GroundControlRC
      @GroundControlRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@1mikeb Hi Mike!
      I certainly did chuck that glider to find the CG.
      These Gliders are very strange when it comes to the CG and my 48cm Glider was the same way.
      The CG is closer to the trailing edge than the leading edge.
      I wanted to have a nice gentle, slow, level glide.
      I found if I removed the forward ballast and left the rear ballast that gave me the nice gentle glide I was looking for.
      With a neutral balance, with the remaining ballast weight, it put the CG a full 70mm back from the Leading Edge.
      I measured that 50mm out from the Fuselage.
      That's nearly 63% of the Root Chord!
      Strange airframes ;-)

    The 1-meter glider looks like fun, but reinforce that wing well. They break easy under "g" loads.
    Any application of heat usually results in alligator skin, since you are expanding each individual bead like a balloon by heating and expanding the air trapped within. I prefer to flex manually with my hands or prop up on books or whatever with weights and let sit for 1-3 days to reverse any warps. I've had luck with both EPP and EPO.
    Isn't a pair of 2004 motors a bit large for this? That's 32 grams total. I think a pair of 10-gram Emax 1404 4000Kv spinning Gemfan5030 props might be a better fit here. It's a very light airframe. Less weight = more glide time. Just my $.02
    I actually have a pair of the 48cm gliders coming (white ones) along with an Eachine Spitfire airframe. They were suppose to come today, "Delivery by 7:00 PM". By 8:00 PM the MyUSPS message was changed to "Delivery time unknown". Good old US mail.
    I saw the 99cm ones but felt I did not have a large enough site to fly it. I want to try making a custom "flying fish" twin from one of the gliders. I already have a pair of 1108 3000Kv motors to use in it, though I need to order another pair of the ultralight 7A ESCs I love so much.
    Happy flying!

    • @GroundControlRC
      @GroundControlRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it will get plenty of reinforcement, even my little 48cm glider has plenty of reinforcement.
      That EPP Foam is too flexible without some carbon.
      I used a hair dryer to straighten everything out.
      It worked fantastic and no alligator skin ;-)
      2004 motors too large for a 1 meter glider?
      That's the plan but you never know plans can change.
      I wouldn't think that would be heavy for it's size but I have plenty of motors and props I can switch out if needed.
      You're going to love those 48cm gliders as they are so much fun.
      Yes, I was think of the flying fish as well only a larger one ;-)
      I think that 48cm glider with twins will be awesome.
      Good luck on your project and I'll be tuning in.

      @Doggeslife 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Gods are pleased. I got a full refund of $12 the same day I filed the claim.
      Good thing too. They changed these gliders so that they have 2 slots in the tail for the elevator, one above the other with different attack angles.
      If I put the stabilizer in the lower level slot for RC use then the fin has a huge hole in it and is barely supported by two small sections of foam and is very weak. Bad design. If the stabilizer is in the top slot then the plane will just do loops forever. What idiot made that change?
      Oh well. Cancel the custom Flying Fish for now. If you get more 48cm gliders then make sure they are the older single slot type.

    I have converted one of this to rc it flies amazing also had to strighten the rudder use hot water, but not very hot not close to boiling water. Also glue the wings together and reinforce it with a spar they are quite flimsy. The model of the glider it is call the cheetah there are many conversions on you tube.

      Hi Alfonso!
      It's good to know yours flies very well.
      I've been wanting to convert a larger glider for quite some time.
      I had some areas on mine that needed straightening, I used a hair dryer and that worked well.
      I've also used the hot water method in the past.
      It will certainly be getting some carbon reinforcement.

    Nice. I've got one of these waiting to convert. Still debating on slope soarer or jamming an edf or two on top. Also when mine came in the tail and wing were warped. I just set it up and let it hang on the wall and it eventually straightened out.

    I think when you add a spar to the wing, that should help level that wing out. However, the wing slot in the fuse could be the culprit. On some of my scratchbuilts, I’ve had to use shims to level the wing
    Can’t wait for the next vids. Good job

    • @GroundControlRC

      Hi James and thank you much!
      I think you are exactly right.
      It's the fuselage slot.
      I worked the main wing halves so they are symmetrical and still have a low wing.
      I'm going to glue the halves together, install a carbon spar and shim if necessary to level them out.
      It's going to be fun ;-)

    Interestingly, earlier this year I found the identical glider on eBay (mine were not quite as cheap - $33 for 2 delivered). As I love sloping my plan is to do much the same as you but not putting any motors in it. I figure a Rx pack of 4 NimH (probably 2500mAh AA's) will give me a good balance point once I remove the ball bearings - if too heavy then 4 x 900mAh AAA's will be tried - no esc required, no BEC and no motors. I think they will slope very well. See you in the air.

      Hi Ian!
      It should be very light without a motor or ESC.
