- DOES A STAGE 1 On a Harley Davidson Street Bob 114 Make Any Difference?? I have been holding off on tuning my bike but the time has finally come. I will be putting an Arlen Ness Intake and Dyno Jet tuner on the bike. But will it really make any difference? Let me know what your experience with Stage one on the Milwaukee 8 has been like!

I did a TBR 2 > 1 and a Ness Monster Sucker on my 103 Twin Cam. I originally tuned it with an FP3 but it always ran super hot even after contacting V&H for a better map and running the auto tune function multiple times. Ended up switching to a power commander and professional dyno tune. I did a stage 2 cam upgrade at the same time and the difference was night and day.
I always thought people were silly dropping $800-1000 on an exhaust and a few hundred more on an air cleaner, but then being too cheap to get it tuned. Just save up for a little while longer and get it done right.
My bike is the same as yours, even the same color. Love the red. Just bought this bike. Last week we did a stage 2 to a stock 114. Thundermax tuner, Fueling 474 cam, and a Bassani 2-1 Road Rage shorty exhaust. I'm telling you, that light Street Bob is scary quick! I'm very impressed!
Just go to a stage 2. You'll never regret it!
I want to add, the S&S 475 cam is also one of the best cams for that 114.
Funny thing about the stock air cleaner, it's actually already rated for high flow, so swapping the pipes and putting a tune on it are about all you need. I noticed a nice difference in performance when I did mine last year. Noticeably better gains from the V&H FP4 than the SE Pro Street Tuner, imho. Not worth putting on a dyno unless you're upgrading cams (stage 2).
I also did a chain conversion on mine, haven't ridden it yet though.
We could link up so you can see how my bike rides with a custom FP4 tune on it (they had to send me one to re-enable my cruise control) if you want... I'm out in Levittown, so not too far from ya.
But overall, the stage 1 does add an improvement, if for no other reason than changing your ratios to *ahem* not so E *cough* P *cough* A *cough* restricted and getting rid of the catalytic converter, from my understanding.
As for throttle responsiveness, yes, there was a big difference from stock when I flashed mine. The cool thing about the FP4 is you can set your throttle response to 3 or 4 different levels, from stock to "racing", which actually does make a difference.
As for changing the pipes and air cleaner, you don't technically need a tune, but it does make a difference, even if slight.
Nice let's link up. Would love to do that comparison
@@TheMotoJawn I realized by the end of your video that you'd already dropped the bike off and had the tune done (I was commenting while watching). Looking forward to the follow up.
I did the same test and posted the results on my ‘21 Iron 883, slight torque and HP increase. Big smile increase for the feel and sound.
Good stuff I saw that one
I did cams but now I realize it was kind of a mistake. After the cams my fuel economy took a huge hit. I do a lot of long distance and I'm not really sure that the reduced range was worth that little bit of extra power.
How big of an impact on fuel?
@@TheMotoJawn I lost about 10 miles per gallon.
I just did a 2 into 1, air cleaner, and stage 1 tune (fp4) on my FXST and the bike runs better, sounds great, and my gas mileage actually got better. Think I'll stick with stage 1 since stage 2 will definitely hit you in the gas tank and I don't feel the trade off is worth the reduction in miles per tank.
Yeah stage 2 more money and gas
I have a 22 fxbbs as well. Just put the TBR 2-1 with the K&N cleaner. Dealer installed and tuned. It is more lively it did get like 4 more hp on the Dyno, but the drive is totally different. The bike doesn't particularly like the tune, but I have an SE intake manifold on backorder, so we will retuned it when that comes in.
How's it running with that tune. Rough?
Check engine light, dealer checked, and I checked. The ecu is not happy with the wide ban sensors (SE Auto tuner). It runs well under 3500. After that, it runs rough.
21’ lowrider s for the first 20k I only had shorty tbr, trask air assault and no tune finally decided to get a powervision tuner when I got the stage 2 woods cam and wish I would of gotten a stage a long time ago she still
Runs like a beast that chop
On my 3 bikes, LRST, RGST, and a PA, I installed slipons. SS on the STs and the VH on the PA. All run great, no effect in fuel economy, no decel pop. The SS I have the baffles in, nice rumble, and the VH a little loud, probably needs a baffle but not bad. Nice midrange on all 3. If you remove the baffles, you will lose some responsiveness on the mid range, a little more power on top.
Love it! Stoked for you big cat
In Thailand we managed to uncap a Nightster 975's ECU. A slip-on + tuning on my 975 cost only around 500 usd.
The bike can reach 130 mph easily. Already too fast I cannot handle the wind. Good power on a budget.
Since I already knew I was going to stage 3, I skipped stage 1 pretty much. From everything I read going “stage 1” you could get away with an Off The Shelf map. If I’m spending money to have my bike on a dyno I want to make sure it’s worth it.
Yeah that's what I would have done but this was free
Good video! I purchased my 21 SB and had the Stealership install V and H Big Radious with the Stage 1 Screaming Eagle. I never rode it stock. Also, I thought the stock AC is already a stage 1 AC?
The stock is considered high flow. I think many of the aftermarket ones are even more open though
Yes the stock ac is a high flow air filter it’s all astetic
Definitely need the tuning
It makes a difference, mostly in sound with a small bump in performance 😅
Right on. My impression to come next
@@TheMotoJawn just makes me want a stage 2
Harley is claiming 10-12 hp and about 4 ft-lbs gain of peak hp & torque with a stage 1 upgrade to the '24 touring models 117ci, not much of a big difference in peak torque but at at 3500 rpm the torque really begins to pull away from the stock setup, as much as 20 ft-lbs by 5500 rpm and the stock peak hp flattens out after 4500rpm whereas the stage 1 makes almost 15 hp more by 5500rpm. At least according to their dyno chart.
That is very optimistic. Stage 1 upgrades are a gold mine for the dealers and manufacturer.
Yeah those numbers seem a little high
My apologies in advanced you’re probably tired of hearing the question but where did you get those gloves?
Fogy garage 🤟
@@TheMotoJawn well I truly appreciate the info and the fast response stay vertical
A stage 1, exhaust, air cleaner, and exhaust is a big money maker for shops, aftermarket and deslers. It is good for very little hp. Put on a set of slipons and call it good till you get a cam update. 1500 dollars is a total waste of money. Ladlaw HD did a video on this and found the same thing. Good idea to go to stage 2 and save money. You are basically advertising for RevZilla, a great place for aftermarket products by the way, so of course they are giving this to you.
The best way to make a stock bike sound good, slipons. The cheapest way to make it faster either stage 2 or lose 20 or 30 lbs.
Agreed I probably would have skipped it if wasn't free
Yeah but if you plan on doing a cam later but you only have the money for stage 1 now why would you buy slip ons knowing you are going to have to spend that extra on a full set later. You will never get what you paid for them slip ons. May as well go straight for a full set of pipes because stage one really is setting yourself up for later.
@T4G95 because I'm driving it for 2 years of warranty and I want it to sound good. I may never do a cam, I can get slipons for less than 250.00 on Amazon if I want to. And I'm waiting because SE and HD are all street legal. Some people want the good stuff, the aftermarket tuner and cam is superior to SE.
Lol...😅😅😅
@@brucem8129 if you think $250 amazon slip ons are going to sound anything better than tinny puss i don’t know what to say other than keep the pipes harley put on the bike. Buy once cry once. A nice set of pipes will last the life of the bike. A nice set of slip ons can to. But to cheap out on something like that i’m not really sure why you would have bought a harley when you could have bought a vulcan because they are way cheaper. The ladlaw video mentioned slip ons being of no performance value. If you get a good air intake. Like upgrading to the k and n filter and a full set of pipes you need to get it tuned because your bike will run lean. Not enough fuel… if you can suddenly pump more fuel through your bike that means you are making more power. Slip ons only won’t get you anything and isn’t worth a tune. But if you went for full pipes and the air intake you will make a gain.
Hey I got a 2021 street bob can you put the link for the fairing would be much appreciated

I’d give American Classic motors a call, they’re about 40 minutes from you and specialize in building and tuning aftermarket Harley’s. They’re my go to for all my parts and tuning needs
Yeah I've heard of them. I'll probably check them out
What are they gloves you are wearing 😮😊
My feeling is that you are just trying to get more of that old school Harley sound with minimal performance improvement.
I don't know how much difference in sound it will make
Aftermarket exhaust is better than stock. Don’t you think?
@Skidz75 oh yeah. I was only referring to the change of intake and tune.
If you put a tuner on it other than the screaming eagle pro street it will void your warranty
I ride that same route down the navy yard.
You just went through a red light bubba.
Too many stop signs and red lights in the city. Can't stop at them all 🤷
What are they gloves you are wearing 😮😊
