Most people just don't get it! There's self satisfaction in this project- for a job well-done- when you're done restoring each part, and every time you use the mower. It's an inspiration in a world of "do it FOR me," and people who crave convenience, at the cost of quality. You know it's done right, you did it yourself.

Looked like a lot more work than it was worth to me. I get freebies or $5.00/$10.00 ones at garage sales, and fix those up. I figure my time at about $50.00/hour, and most of the time I never break even. Along with the blade being on upside down, I've never seen anyone put a flat washer on top of a lock washer before. I thought that the lock washer was supposed to "lock/catch" the nut. It would appear that the nut could slip on the flat washer.

Yes, you fixed it and great refurbishment, but yard sale, roadside freebies and ones discarded at local landfills are the real bargains and while they may not be as "pretty" when fixed, they will still cut grass when fixed up. P.S.--You have the blade on upside down.

The Kohler engine everyone is pointing out as an indicator of this being a high end mower, doesn't go for much more than a mower with an OHV Briggs.
The new push mower Kohler engines aren't built like the old K series/Magnum/Command Kohler's of decades past.
If you read the tag in the beginning, this was a Tractor Supply house brand "Huskee", that went for $200 new.
3-$400 range would be the self propelled bagger, like a Toro, or Honda, or Husqvarna.

If you live in an area with a active Craig's List or Freecycle, you might find a FREE working mower almost every week. There are definitely good deals to be found in the used equipment sales.. My Craftsman LT1000 riding mower with 42" mower deck was 4 years old and $450 including the dump trailer. I've used it enough to have had to replace the blade mandrels this year - but it still runs fine. Certainly beat paying $1400 for the mower alone.

  • @johnhpalmer6098

Great job! I'd probably do something similar myself, but I already have a well running mower, a Honda mower, the HRR612 if memory serves, bought it refurbed (cleaned and adjusted etc) 3 years ago and it's been great since then. I think it's from the early to mid Aughts so not terribly old and when new, it was not their low end models with the molded plastic decks, but the cast aluminum decks and has the roto stop (stops the blade, but not the motor itself) and is self propelled. the ONLY thing it does not have is electric start, no big deal as it starts for the most part on one pull anyway. I just replaced the pull cord on it yesterday and a couple of months ago, had to clean out the dogs of the pull mechanism as it was not recoiling well (gunk) but the cord was beginning to fray and last weekend, it all but broke. I put a new air cleaner in it, and this weekend I'll change the oil in it as it's overdue and maybe try to sharpen the blade(s) to help with cutting until I replace with a fresh blade.
The big issue with low end mowers like this is the cheap decks, often made of thin gauge stamped steel like this one you just did and they rust, and if the mounts for the handlebar is welded on like the old ones from the distant past often were, they would tear out eventually and need welding. I agree, should have used a Rustoleum rust inhibitor product as it does stop rust in its tracks. Used it in the past and it really does work well. Basically, converts rust to proper metal if not mistaken.
    Otherwise, good job!

Deck coating, Run the heater over fresh paint to make it a little harder. Secondly, use graphite coating or PAM cooking spray to create a non-stick surface which makes it a lot easier to clean the deck.

Tip for next time. After getting rid of as much rust as possible, treat with a rust converter. Once dry, it will stop the rust dead in its tracks!! Great work! Awesome before and after. And a huge sense of accomplishment for rescuing that three legged dog! The people out here saying you got robbed are the ones putting the mowers out on the curb and buying new ones every other year. Bet they get robbed for more in the end... I have this same engine on a self propelled deck, but mine keeps dying when hot. I replaced the thermal choke and the coil, cleaned the carb three times and cant figure it out.

Hey buddy, I was giving a mower, I ran, but REALLLY Bad, He Hit A Rock with the blade bent it to shit, Did a little research from never working on a mower engine before, Pulled the Flywheel Replaced the Key, It was like 180 Degrees Out of timing! And still Ran, Took the carb and the airbox off and cleaned out the card with cleaner, Cleaned the bottom nut on the carb out really well, Sprayed some air through the crab and everything, Replaced the filter and all that, When taken the carb off the little bar running from the carb the the back of the mower not sure what it is, If its a Convener or some sort of choke, I Snapped the top of the plastic piece on the carb where the bar connects too, SO i i bought a new carb, Off Ebay, Went to put it on, And this is where i think i fucked up, I wanted to be safe so i took off the whole piece on the back holding the bar so i could put the carb on first, Well i didn't know it it opened and closed by the oil squirted, so i cant get that back in the right order, everything back to gather and it wont run, sounds sometimes like it wants to, but nothing, Well come to find out the carb is so uneven it wouldn't seal to the airbox, Not sure if it was because the airbox was so mold it just warped that way, So i ordered a New airbox and gasket, And tried Both new and old carb, And she still wont run, Coil Is Gaped at #13, And the Plug is gaped too, And the coil is good also its like 5kkh When i prime it, It just don't seem like its getting gas into the carb.. I Keep hearing air when i prime, I've tried everything, And it use to be fine, There's a new airbox and primer in in, There parts are all bran new, BTW, Its a Craftsman Briggs and Stratton 6.5Hp 22" Cut, Its in great condition, Guy only had it for a year or two and hardy every used it, I Pulled the head to check the Valves to see if they were moving with the stroke, And everything seems fine, I'm not sure if its a carb issue gasket sealing problem primer not pushing fuel, Or The Linkage i messed up, Not to sure how it even chokes, Since its an older one without a choke on it, Its just the little piece that controls ideal, But the carb opens and closes very easy because the linkage is messed up, If anyone understand any of that, This is just what i learned from never working on a mower in my life from the last 3 weeks! Id really just like to know witch way the little Convener flapper opens and closes, Like witch way should i leave it before bolting it back up? All the way the the left? Or to the Back towards the back of the mower? I Know its something with the carb linkage and that flapper! I Know it, And its driving me nuts, Is there any secret tips getting the primer to work, Like i said, Its a whole new Airbox and new Primer bulb in there! OEM Too!

42:09 Mower blade balancer and sharpener. Google it or find it in any home improvement store, makes a world of difference. Definitely makes the cutting of grass less exhausting.

Nice Fix, agreed with most of it until you tried to sharpen the blade with a file. The blade is as hard as the file, so will ruin your file... Try an angle grinder next time. Also I would have just drilled and tapped a new tread into the stub axle, then lock-tighted (or brazed.) a piece of thread stock into it, but I am just being mean..!

I live near a tourist trap town in Florida and this is common during Snowbird season when the Canadians come down. According to an employee of the former Sears store (now closed since Hurricane Michael wrecked the roof) they will come in, buy something, use it for the six or so weeks they are here then bring it back because they "didn't like it" and get a full refund. Then Sears (Wal-Mart or whatever store) would have to pay an employee to repair it, clean it up and try to sell it so they didn't have to take a total write off on the item. The average person has no idea this is so common with Snowbirds and the beach destination could care less because all they care about is the money they can get from these suckers, not the damage they do.

Appreciate your hard work in restoring that mower. The value is probably break even. Instead of doing all that work on the underside, think about maybe just a wire brush and Rhino bed liner paint?

looks like it needs to be undercoated with a compound that stabilizes the rust, so it does not rust out the deck.
