My neighbor showed up a week ago with a 1988 Lawnboy mower. It is electric start and has the bagger. I noticed the plastic plate was snapped and the rod for supporting the bag is missing but honestly, a trip to the homedepot for a piece of metal rod works. I am doing to epoxy the plastic plate together after pinning it together. I was shocked at this mowers over all condition. Other than some paint touch ups and I sharpened the blade. The battery reads 12.35, so its eather been replaced or its a miracle. I am going to hit goodwill for a wall wort charger because the charger wasnt with it. I think it must have a self charging system. I am always amazed at how long a two cycle mower will last over todays crap. I may even sell my Honda Harmony and keep this old smoky stover! If I cannot sell it, I think I will keep it. I can still get parts for it too.

First step for me would have been..check oil. Second step compression test and spark test. Woulda sucked to spend all the time and material to clean a roached mower. Cool video. Been fixing 4 strokes since I was like 8-9 with my dad. Carb cleaning, freshy gas and perhaps a new timing key installed.

Just another reason why I believe schools need to bring back shop class. Anyway, Nathan great video thanks for sharing.

      @MikeGillett58 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Same here, I've worked on these engines since the 60's, if it really is a Briggs I've never had a problem getting them running again. I also learned SEA FOAM gas stabilizer. Keeps the gas from gumming up the carburetor. The 4 on the engine cover, what is that supposed to mean, certainly not 4.5 hp? That is one big motor for such a small piece of crap Murray... but I would gladly rebuild that machine, and use it for the next 20 years, bought my last mower in 1987, I've thought about changing the oil once, but I went and sat down instead. The air filter is a different story, they crumble at some point, don't want that to get into the carb. The first time I used the brand new mower I hit a rock and it clunked for a couple of years. I finally thought I might have bent the blade. Replaced the blade runs perfectly. I have sheared the flywheel key once and replaced it. The next time I sheared the key, I just moved the flywheel back into place tighten the nut, that was about 5 years ago. I keep thinking one day I might have to move that flywheel again, don't think I will ever buy another key for it. It works better to just not hit things with it.

I have a yardworks, briggs, that was given to me. My mother upgraded,so I took it off her hands. She had it for 9 years, then Ive had it for 8 years. Ive never changed the spark plug, only put oil in it once, and never cleaned the carb. Use reg gas, and I have always left it outside everyday during those years. Good old Canadian cold winters.
Guess what, it starts with a prime on first pull everytime. Blows my mind. I also run over branches that stall it out, rocks, etc. Never sharpen the blade either. Shes a unicorn 👍.

Glad that your doing these mower repairs. The local shop charges the price of a basic power mower for a "tune up" , which is probably fair. If I do it myself, I'm in for parts, aggravation, oil, aggravation, injury, aggravation, but I'll get there eventually. Thank you and Bruce Pender. Narragansett Bay

but in most instances better just to get a new carb very cheap I get mine from China never fails even on Honda engines have done

Well with this virus keeping me home I've been able to finally get to my pile of free stuff I've collected over the last five years. After going through the mess and cleaning up various stuff like mowers, tractors, tillers, ect. I've made over $3500.00 in the last month selling those unwanted trashed items and it really helped offset the lack of income I've had to experience due to the stay at home orders. Bonus was getting the barn cleaned out for a new batch of thrown away stuff that nobody bothers to clean or repair.

Just so you will know, Nathan, and your viewers as well, at 15:54 in your video I watched you spray what appears to be carburetor cleaner into your mower's engine. There is nothing wrong with using a small amount of carburetor cleaner to "jump start" an engine that has been sitting for a while or that has a relatively dry carburetor. The only problem I saw here, however, is that you sprayed it into the wrong orifice. You sprayed the cleaner into the PCV tube coming off the engine block. I am certain you meant to spray the cleaner into the carburetor bore. The carburetor bore is slightly below the half way mark, vertically speaking, and on the left side of the primer bulb. The air filter basket partially hides this opening from view and you must spray into it from an angle coming from the left side. I would imagine the engine went ahead and started because the time you took to spray more than likely gave the carburetor bowl the extra few seconds it needed to finish filling up completely. I would also recommend you remove any and all rubber parts from any carburetor you are attempting to clean before you use any type of carburetor cleaner on it because carburetor cleaner will cause rubber parts to swell, and in some cases, to distort badly. As a rule this is not so much a problem with this particular carburetor, however, if you do this on the metal carburetors you may well be creating unnecessary problems and added expenses for yourself.
For the most part, sir, you have made a good video and it is inspiring to see someone rescue a piece of machinery which has been prematurely and unnecessarily discarded. Keep up the good work , sir, and ...
May the love and peace of Jesus Christ be yours.

Many people just run them till the spark plug stops working.
They put gas in them over and over, Never changing the oil, never changing the air filter.
They just run them till they wont start.
I have got many old lawn mowers running after people throw them away.
    One had me stumped.
It had black sludge clogging the muffler pipe.
I took the head off, and the engine was filled with black sludge.

People throw away loads of perfectly fine things that just need a little attention and care. The hard part is intercepting the item before they throw it out. I'd love to get me a free "non-working" generator, but around here, not many people have generators to begin with so they're not in high supply. Plenty of free push mowers. Even beat up non-running riding mowers aren't typically free here, but again, plenty of free push mowers. I got mine for free.

Strong work - my only criticism would be that I'd rather hear you mumbling to yourself as you work on it than the music. Even the background 'noise' of the birds and bees would be an improvement.
I've often thought of finding these things, fixing them, and selling them either to kids needing summer work in their neighborhood or giving them to people that need a job instead of seeing them stand at intersections holding signs. Of course, some of those guys don't want a job or work, just the cash, but I'm sure one or two would take a free mower.

So I wouldn't do this for a rotary mower but I've had an 800 square foot bentgrass putting green in my backyard for 6 years now and I've rebuilt a couple Toro GreensMaster 1000 reel mowers over that time. Not free, I paid $200-$250 for them but given they run $12-$13k new it was nothing. Finally this year I bought a 2016 GreensMaster 1000 for $2200 from a Toro retailer and it's gorgeous. I like tinkering but when you're cutting 1/4" and lower you've got to be precise.

Check the valve lash and change the oil. I suggest pennzoil platinum, or amazon basics. I use them in my small engine projects and they work amazing. I suggest you watch a video made by ‘projectfarm’ on the two oils and seafoam.

I bought an old Victa mower which was running when I got it, and then just about everything failed. Took a bit of work to get it back, but I think it's worth it. Only got a bit more to do with the grass catcher, but new blades and serviced the carb, new parts for it and seals, new throttle cable too. More than I bought in to but they are legendary mowers!
