I am 68 and having been playing with engines since I was old enough to turn a wrench. I always learn something new from you. My friend and I had a similar problem to this one. It was on a Kawasaki V-twin in an Argo ATV. The intake valves felt like they were welded into the head, and the push rods dropped out. We stuffed nylon rope into the cylinders to keep the valves from dropping into the cylinder, took the valve springs off, worked the valves loose, then used acetone to clean the valve stems. We had a chance encounter with an Argo dealer at a outdoor show. He was familiar with sticking valves on Argos, and he told us how to fix it. We were going to pull the engine out. He saved us a lot of work! Now I see we could have left the valve springs on and simplified the job. Your penetrating oil formula would have worked great. Keep up the excellent work! Thank you Steve!

I had that problem on a liquid cooled Kawasaki 425 John Deere when I used Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer. I had a 5 gallon tank of it. It happened twice on the same tank of gas. So after I fixed the valve the second time, I didn't shut it off until it ran out of gas. Put in a fresh tank of gas with no Sta-Bil never had a problem since and that was over 10 years ago. I don't use Sta-Bil anymore.

Thanks for this video. I was working on my wife's niece's nice Honda mower that I determined had no compression. It was about 7 years old, but had sat for about the last three years because they had moved to a new home and had no grass to mow. Once I got the valve cover off, the problem was exactly like your video shows, I squirted some carb cleaner down the valve stem and guide, and wallah, it freed up in a few minutes of working it in and out. I adjusted the valves and put the cover back on and it runs like a champ. Easiest fix for what I thought was going to be a major problem. Thanks again.

Steve, I had a Plate tamper with a Honda engine that was a buddy's he lent me then never wanted it back when I offered to return it. Well, years went by and it acted this same way. No compression when he finally wanted it back. I wound up doing him a solid and swapped his non running engine off and put another one I had bought before this off a guy for $25 USD. Then returned the Tamper in working order to him. I will get the old one working and put it on a Water pump or other tool some day. Great to see you cover the Valve issue I encountered.

Thanks for making this video!!!! Just had this happen to my daughter’s lawnmower with a 190 on it. I pulled the valve cover and there it was, stuck all the way down. I could not get it to move at all no matter how much carb cleaner it sprayed on it I could not get it free. I took off the valve spring, valve steam seal, and removed the carb and sprayed the valve stem in the port. Finally all at once it popped out and was completely free. I put it all back together and it now runs great!!!

Wow! This really helped! I was given a brand new 5 year old Troy Bill TB200 that wouldn’t start. Did everything you suggested in your videos and it still didn’t start. Opened the valve cover and one of the rocker arms was very loose. It had good compression so this was a Hail Mary. 10 minutes later it was back together and started on the first pull. Guessing the set screw was loose from factory. I have refurbished about five mowers I found by the curb but this was the hardest. Would never have attempted without this video.

I can't count the number of mowers I've found on trash piles because they won't run. Usually it is a simple fix. Fouled spark plug from mowing on a steep slope or a broken wire on the magneto etc. It's easy to fix most anything with an engine if you simply look at the details. Keep the vids coming Steve. Steve, I have three mowers, one Honda tiller and a mantis 2cycle or what I call my psycho tiller that were all given to me to "work on" since I badly injured my back. I have been at a total loss with how to get started with trouble shooting these things. One has a bad or sticky recoil spring, once(the Honda tiller) won't stay running and the third is an old troybilt self propelled mower that will neither stay running nor self propell. But thanks to your time energy and knowledge and giving, I at least know where to start. Thank you...

So easy - I used CRC to free up the exhaust side and some marine sealant for the cover
I had a blade which was 1 1/2 short on one side too. I was nearly going to ditch it, now it is back in the 'stable'

Great video. Working on a lawn mower which I believe has no compression. Will try your way by spinning the blade. Question: What kind of compression gauge tester is used. Bought one at Harbor Freight Tools which is to test gas engines like car. Can this be used to test a lawn mower. I got a reading of 30 psi. Used gauge on another good running mower and got a reading of 50 psi. Seen many videos, but no one has ever stated, well this is the correct compression gauge tester that you use to test lawn mowers. Also can this gauge be used to test weed eaters. Thank you for your answer.

Steve I have a 22in awd toro recycler with guaranteed to start (ha ha) B&S 7.25… A little over 4yrs old. Started on first pull until 2wks ago. Couldn’t get it started. Watched several of your videos so set out to check spark, fuel, and compression. Used a spark tester showed good spark, shot a small amount of starting fluid through carb still no start. Pulled plug and grounded to make sure spark at electrode.
(Had a plug on time that was shorted out).. Good spark at electrode, gave small shot of starting fluid put plug back in and if finally started
After several pulls. Tried your quick compression check, blade kicked back but felt a little weak. Got compression gauge could only get
30lbs which would explain why I finally got it started. Question is what would cause low compression?…I don’t drink beer will hard liquor
Do or do I have to make my wife drink a couple of beers🤪

My old mower sat for probably 2 years because a neighbor gave me hers and I got it running so I just used it. Now it’s kaput. Put new carb, hose, cable, filter, bulb. Well, it only has 36 compression. Oh, anyway, the old mower...old faithful, I changed the oil and cleaned the gas tank. It started on the third pull! Now it starts on the first pull! You should see the connection between the plug and that wire! I used it all wrapped around and bare for a few years and it STILL works! SMH. Until it quits I’ll leave it alone. Meanwhile, I’m gonna work on the other one after your instruction! You make it look so easy! LOL THANK YOU!

Before I am done, total overhauls New Top Ends., down to splitting cases and replacing crank bearings, seals, ensuring oiler parts are properly functioning, carb and ignition, exhaust repairs, new flywheels, handles, throttle controls. Solid Gold - thanks Steve. Had the exact same problem and I am very grateful for your solution.- the mower had been sitting over winter and started 2nd pull no problem this is probably the 4th time I used it and low and behold had no compression - I lost a lot of time messing around checking spark plug, spark and fuel - I even pulled of the exhaust to see if that was carbon blocked. The mower had run perfectly last week and suddenly just refused to start and after being unable to fix it - I headed inside and decided to see if you had any good advice - as usual you had the solution.

A one time adding of a little Berryman's B-12 or Sea Foam in the fuel will help to dissolve the rest of the varnish out of the carb and carry it to the cylinder to be burned in use.
    Another good one Steve!
