Heres' a really quick way to upgrade both the Taranis OpenTX firmware AND the bootloader all in one simple operation: 1. Remove the battery from your Taranis 2. Fire up the ImpulseRC Driver Fixer and plug your Taranis into the computer. The Driver Fixer will put you into DFU mode 3. Open the Companion; now that you are in DFU mode you will have the choice to flash. Choose your image and click OK They say necessity is... so I somehow accidentally bricked my radio so it would not even turn on. Since the Taranis uses this the same STM chip that our FC's use, I tried it and it worked the first time through! Thanks, Joshua for another very helpful video - just wanted to add my experience to the comments ;)
I can't explain how much I learn from your videos. I watch others and get confused but the way you explain things is so easy to follow. Thanks a billion!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! A coworker friend of mine and i got into multirotors when they 1st came out. I built several, and we were working on doing longrange autonomous to each others homes (shhh!...lol). He passed away during the height of Covid and not having someone interested in the same mischievous experiments around anymore I completely lost interest. Recently decided to get back into it but my Taranis X9D+ was severely outdated and I forgot how to work radio software. You helped a lot to bring it up to date. Thanks again!
Glad you're up to date now! lol. I suspect you didn't get the error initially because you have a newer Taranis. I got a big fat error until I updated. Well done as always!
Thanks man, that worked excellent for opentx 2.2.4! Started with my new taranis yesterday, quiet a challenge if you have not been into RC for a few years. Next up: flashing frsky R9 and r9 slim+.
Cheers Josh. This tutorial got my 2016 Taranis x9dplus up and running again. It had been in storage since late 2018. I have never updated any firmware on it before. It was working fine when i placed in storage but needed EU firmware updates when i tried to use it last week. It appears that there must have been a time limit installed on the original firmware as there was no other reason why it stopped binding to the receivers. I tried several receivers but it would not bind to any of them until i updated the taranis firmware and bootloader.
just spent close to 700 bucks on crossfire and taranis thank you Joshua Bardwell your software installs went amazing... I wouldnt mind a crossfire video :)
In opentx version 2.2.4 there still there, but if I try to update the download for that version it says not available, or something like this.?????😱🎮✈️🚁💨💨
What was the final version of software available for the X9d+? The reason I ask is that I have somehow ended up with Version 2.3.5 on mine. It works fine but I cant get the FrSky XSR-SIM wireless dongle to bind.
Hello Joshua, I want to update my Taranis x9e from opentx 2.2.4 to the latest version and in the same time check the box for multiprotocol, but this box is missing now. I also have to check the box for Horus gimbals ( for my already installed and use for over a year, hall gimbals) But those boxes are disappear. Where are they, do you know that. Theo.
Hi Joshua, thanks for the helpful videos you post :) Is it correct that the V8FRii receivers binded in D8 mode do not link to a "secure" module ID like in the X series receivers? With the older receivers (D and V8-II) you need to be sure you have the correct model memory selected, as the will respond to any model memory that is set to D8? The D and V8-II series receivers date back to when FrSky was only making modules and per-memory binds were impossible then??
Hi Joshua, during my attempt to update my bootloader I renamed the file and I must have named it wrong because now when I attempt to enter bootloader my radio screen goes blank and the haptic buzzes continuously. I can't get into bootloader. I removed the SD and put the proper bin file on the card but still doesn't work. Any ideas?
Joshua, to you as a specialist question: on the remote, the taranis qx7 had a short circuit and it completely refused to turn on, identified all the burned parts, the RB521 S-30 diode and the STM32F205VET6 brain (100 legs). All the details are bought and go to me. With the diode problem will not it be, but with the chip as after the transplant be? The equipment will start in DFU mode? How to load open tx into the taranis?
This is uncanny... I need this video right now. You always do this Joshua! Thanks again. My Taranis stopped connecting to my computer and I am sure updating the bootloader will fix my issue. It recognizes USB Connected but no longer recognizes the drives, SD card or computer connection at all. (No sound when plugging into computer)
Take the SD card out of the radio and use a card reader. FWIW, I have a single computer that will not connect to the Taranis at all and I have no idea why. It happened after the 1st time I plugged in to one of the USB 3.0 ports.
@Jesse Peacock I had attempted this prior and all drivers are up to date. I also tried a roll back just tbs. Nada. After that, it didnt even recognize that anything is plugged in at all. @Joshua Bardwell & @Larok the Creator I used the card with a card reader, reinstalled, flashed & it now works as intended. If I can recall anything prior to the issue starting I believe it occurred because I plugged in the USB and the charging cable at the same time. Thank you all for troubleshooting... I can get back to practicing. ^^ /thumbsup
One difference is that the new bootloader expects the SD card to be formatted differently. FIRMWARES changed to FIRMWARE for example so if you try to update the firmware from the SD card from within the bootloader, it won't find the folder.
Dear Joshua- I just flashed 2 XM+ via Taranis on 2.2 without updating the bootloader- worked flawless... So it is just about the FW of the internal TX module?
Oh and for some reason my old sounds are still working, got lucky :) the stock ones sound awful. Joshua your channel is one of my favourites by the way. You are really very helpful in so many technical questions.
Hi Josh, why my SD card is showing folders with this extension "Firmware.exe" I did not created this and on the PC my SD card looks normal. I discover this bug when I was trying to upgrade R9M module, but I am unable to open firmware folder in the Tx. Very strange, also the [ ] are missing from all the folders ".exe" extension.
I have the same problem. I have the Taranis X7, and successfully upgraded firmware and SD-card content to last stable version (2.2.1), but find no way to flash the bootloader.
I have the same problem. Flashing a brand new X9D+ SE. Worked fine untill I got to this point. Holding the enter key gives me Copy Rename and Delete, but not update....
Mr. Bardwell, I am trying to update the firmware on my taranis qx7s from 2.2.0 to 2.2.2., I keep getting the message "new firmware not compatible with current version". Do I need to first update to 2.2.1 to get to 2.2.2?
My x9d plus error 😞 , (script syntax error, wizard. Lua: 72 Attempt to call field 'lock' (a Nil value) . This is what ia written on the screen, when making a new model. Please how to fix it
Question Joshua ever since I followed your heart video fur opetx update I've had an issue that I didn't know about until last week. On all models that were carry overs from the update I can't turn the external RF on. I can turn the internal one on and off and I cab set up new models and everything works fine. I just want to use my xjt connection. I just bought the micro crossfire and the socket get power I just can't use it without making a new model. Have you seen this or is there something I can do to correct it?
Joshua - I have the older Taranis - SVN: opentx-r, DATE: 2013-10-18, VERS: opentx-X9D-V1.1.02, EEPR215. Do these updates apply to me too or do I have to find NON Plus information?
You must download the correct firmware for your radio, and I do believe there is different firmware for the Plus vs. the non-Plus Taranis. If you set the correct radio type in your profile in OpenTX, then it will download the correct firmware.
Hi Joshua, I have an older Taranis (non plus model), can I still upgrade to the v2.0 FW, the main problem is the radio does not enter bootloader mode with the trims, any ideas? Thanks
No clue why it wouldn't enter bootloader with the trims. I don't see why you couldn't upgrade though. You may need to upgrade using the DFU method. You plug in the USB with the radio powered down. You might need to use Zadig to intsall the winusb driver though. I've never personally done it that way.
I updated the taranis x9d plus SE to the new opentx just now and after all done i cannot get the image on the taranis for quad. When I add a quad and click on image it shows only - - - -
This is driving me nuts. EVERY TH-cam video falls over at the same point for me. @4:25, you hold the trim switches in and turn it on to go into bootloader mode. On my old Taranis this doesn't work. I've never updated the firmware on my Taranis and apparently it doesn't even HAVE a bootloader. I'm SOOOOO frustrated...
mine will not update, no idea why but everything works great up till the last step. the long press does nothing, a short press shows only delete. any thoughts ?
Try using the method shown here, to flash from OpenTX Companion. th-cam.com/video/0IlAiMGlUN8/w-d-xo.html It will update bootlader and firmware together.
Could i put an sd card in a reader connected to the computer to put it on there, and from there put it into the radio? The whole issue i have is when i try to get into bootloader the radio doesnt turn on with the trims pushed in
any idea for my issue Taranis Q X7? i have upgraded firmware from Companion software (profile set corectly for proper radio model). I noticed strange thing (too late for me and radio), after entering bootloader menu, radio skipped bootloader menu into USB connected message. Program seems to work fine, (writing new firmware finished successfuly etc etc) but after disconnecting the USB cable (from windows too), there was still message "USB conne..." on the display and radio stucks. i canoot power that off - after unplugging battery radio didnt powering on :( - bootloader menu didnt work too. i tried to do some upgrading in STM32 Bootloader mode (without battery) - no luck - after downloading firmware (STM32 Bootloader mode) there's only 64kb
it was so crazy - no bootloader at all - i found that problem was broken USB cable - reflashed with Companion in STM32 Bootloader mode (no battery, only USB connection (new one :)) to computer)
Helo masta...i would to seek your help, if you would mind. I have taranis, but some how i think i do bad step...i accidentally deleted the firmware file in my radio (not in sdcard)... And now i am not able to write firmaware from opentx companion... It show error message in my computer "ca not write firmware..(unknown error)" Would you kind to help me what i need to do... Currently i am using x9d plus with 2.2.3 firmware Big thanks
Hi Joshua. Question, I have Taranis x9d plus version 2.2.0 verified after watching your video. On wizard setup the helicopter pic/option is gone. How do I get it back? Thanks for your videos and help.
Hi Joshua, I am trying to upgrade from 2.0.9, told I have to go to 2.1.9 first, followed your directions I think and every time it tells me it is not compatable with the version on the radio. Could you steer me in the correct direction please?
I think it is just warning you that your models may not convert correctly. So as long as you have the 2.0.9 radio backed up safely, I would proceed. But I don't know for sure as I have never experienced that error.
I'm not sure exactly why it's doing that, but I would try flashing it using the DFU mode method. Plug in USB with power off. Download and run impulseRC driver fixer. It will find the "flight controller" (the Taranis) and fix the driver. Download OpenTX Companion and use it to flash the firmware to the radio. It will update the bootloader and the firmware together.
Hello Joshua , im hoping you can help me .. ok im currently using firmware 2.2.0 .. im trying to update and use 2.2.1 so i can use lua scripts.. i have watched your awesome videos describing how to do this.. but when i write to radio it gives me this error message .. NEW FIRMWARE IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE ONE CURRENTLY INSTALLED?? Do i need to update the bootloader to 2.2.1 first? i did notice that you didnt.. i have QX7S radio .
I think it's fine to ignore this. There is a setting in OpenTX Companion that you can check to turn off this warning. I'm sorry I don't remember exactly where it is though.
plus you cant just ignore it ... it wont let you do it .. i have searched for hours to find an answer to this problem cant find where to uncheck the box so am now giving up on LUA scripts its doing my head in ..
Im stuck... When i try to turn it on normally the radio just vibrates and squeals and the screen is blank. Got here by putting the firmware on the sd card and trying to write firmware from the menu you get to by turning on the radio with the two trim buttons held on, bootloader menu i think. Says Write firmware and it writes but something must have failed i guess. Any help would be appreciated. got a brick on my hands currently
SOLVED I had not changed to Taranis ***PLUS*** in the settings before downloading the FW. Therefore i loaded FW for the old taranis on my plus version and it didnt like that
@@JoshuaBardwell ok. I ok. watched it and it didnt cover updating the boot loader. Btw, thanks for all your work! More info... I was able to update the x9d+ firmware to 2.2.3 and updated all sd card content including adding firmware to the firmware folder.
Just one question.... my taranis uses 7.2v battery and during your video could notice your battery icon says 11.4v at 3min:15sec .... why do you use stronger battery?
Great to know.... well.. if I decide to use 3S LiPo, just plug it in? however to recharge, unplug it and use the same LiPo charger? Do I need to make any mod in the Taranis? Do I get better signal or range with that?
@@JoshuaBardwell Ok. Thanks. I see the file in the video doesn’t have the version number on the end of it. My file does have the version number. I’m still waiting for my SDHC card so I’m unable to actually try it. I’m a newb at OpenTX.
So i updated the bootloader. What did that really do? How about updating the firmware in Rx like the XRS? Does anyone update this? why should I update the Rx firmware? Josh any input?
If it binds to an eu radio, then the flash was successful. The only way to see the firmware on the receiver is to use the USB flashing tool. But this is pretty cumbersome.
Hi Joshua - Great video - now running 2.2.0 PIDs & PWR via the TX is just the business - However I've been unable to upgrade RX software on XM+ current FCC needs to EU-LBT:-/ process Menu, page, firmware, then I selected new version of FW, selected the option flash external device - then I get the error message "Firmware update error, version request failed [EXIT]". do you have any ideas what it might be?
Hey Man I was wondering if you could help me, I think I flashed the wrong firmware to my X9D+. As a result the radio seems to be bricked, it won't turn on nor will it enter DFU/bootloader mode, my computer doesn't even recognise when its plugged in anymore. I have downloaded the correct firmware and flashed it using the companion nut the problem has not gone away. Please can you help, I love this transmitter and can't afford a new one. Hopefully you can help me learn something today :'(
It should always enter DFU mode when you plug in USB with power off. Flashing firmware should not be able to break that. th-cam.com/video/0RvQFaq-Pg8/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=JoshuaBardwell The solution is to download the right firmware and flash it to the radio using that method.
I'm also updating from 2.1.6 and followed along. I see the same bin file but then when I go to update the bootloader, all I see is copy, rename, delete. What did I do wrong?
No Taranis stuff on luarocks.. Is there a repo somewhere that has Taranis stuff? Curious to see what lower level resources could be accessed other then just the opentx api. As for script ideas; I think a virtual keyboard that could be navigated via one of the gimbals would be cool. Anybody seen a project like that?
Another method is to flash the firmware by plugging in the radio with power off, using the PC companion app. This updates the bootloader and the firmware at the same time. Check my video about updating the xlite to see how.
Joshua, Thanks for this video, but I need your help. I followed your instructions to update the bootloader, but when I go back to bootloader (powering on with trim buttons in) the screen goes blank and there is a loud buzzing/vibration. The Taranis seems to power on normally, just change get to boot loader screen. When I connect to computer while in the blank screen and vibrating the computer is able to recognize both the sd card and Taranis. I pulled the battery out a couple of times with no change. Please advise.
That was what I thought. How could I reflash with old bootloader? I read somewhere that the new version of Bootloader dosn't work. I also watched your video "Betaflight Taranis Lua Script HOW TO | Part 1 | Install Firmware" and how you replace the SD card content, would that work? Love your channel.
Did the setup as instructed works perfectly and I don’t get out of memory warning if I use the first page as normal to get the lua pages up I thought that was not supposed to work ? , fantastic job as usual well done. 👍
I'm not convinced there is a big advantage. But small things change like the folder is now named FIRMWARE instead of FIRMWARES, and the old bootloader won't recognize the new folder name.
Not working for me. I DLed OpenTXT companion 2.2.0 via the link below. When I try to download the lastest firmware it's not the same file your video shows and it gives me an error message - "Invalid Language". Can you please try this on another computer? I think something has changed as I cannot download the firmware I keep getting "Invalid Language" and it's clearly not the same file you are using, there is nothing in the title of the file name with LUA. Help??
I followed the same steps in the video and it was working fine with bootloader 2.16 but now after doing the same as in video... after installing new bootloader I restarted my Taranis and it is not booting up at all. I tried powering with different batteries, removing the internal battery waiting for few mins, removing SD , replacing SD but nothing works, It just refuses to boot up at all. No blue screen nothing... please help
My companion always says "Unable to check for Updates", so I cant get the new firmware on my Taranis. People online have said to make sure "nightly builds" are enabled in the settings menu, but that's not even an option in my 2.2 companion. Help please.
For some reason, 2.2.1 companion eventually worked and let me flash my Taranis, so I might've been using the wrong application on my computer. I also attempted to delete my old 2.1.9 configurator, and it seemed to work on 2.2.1 config after that, but still not 2.2.0. I have no idea why this happened and even though everything seems to be working I'd still love some explanation
For anyone who just wants your radio to default to joystick like it used to, it can be changed in options. Mine was actually set this way after flash, so I didn't need to change it.
Hi Joshua, I wonder if you could help me with a problem I have? I'm trying to flash the internal XJT module on my Taranis which I have successfully done before (all via the SD card method). I have flashed both international and EULBT to this module and bound to D and X series RX's. Now after I flashed the Taranis again I am unable to connect to any of my RX's and the Taranis will not allow me to reflash the internal module I get an error message (Firmware update error Module not responding). I have also changed the firmware to both eu and int on my receivers to see if the taranis will bind to something but both times I have solid red and green LED's on the receiver which i believe means the firmware between the RX and TX is incompatible. I hope I have explained this so that you can understand it. keep up the good work your channel helps me alot!!! Bootloader ver 2.2.0 Opentx 2.2.0
is there a reason to actually update the bootloader, I mean does it bring new "have to have" features or better efficiency on the system? Just asking as I was wondering if it was worth it...
If I may make a request, could you also do a video on the differences between the two different firmwares for the Taranis and where to get them from. I recently got a Q X7 and I'm finding it difficult to find thorough information in one place on the firmware used for the radio (OpenTX) and the internal XJT module and then also Non-EU vs. EU, where to find it from and how to flash etc.
Hi Joshua, thx for your implication in this hobby. Helping so much pilots out there. I succeed Bootloading it, flashfirmware it at 2.2 open-tx. I was copying SD-Card content & files throughout the Taranis (SD-card in taranis). And sadly, I got house power outage. My Taranis still boot. I copied finally the SD-Card content directly from PC to SD card, put in taranis, I have voice, all seams fine. But, but, I have no longer the Bootloader menu access !!!!!! How I can flash the taranis deep as Bootloader too ?
The limit is 32 characters. My original .bin filename was more than that, and what I renamed it to was still well over 8. Before I made my comment on the Lua script 1 video, I checked the most likely value for the limit by making two text files on the Taranis in Windows Explorer, and renaming them to 12345678901234567890123456789012 and 123456789012345678901234567890123. Only the first one showed up in the Taranis file browser.
Well heck. This turned out badly. I followed the video presentation to the letter, using the pause button often so I could keep up. Rebooted and ran the new bootloader and it ran fine but now after I re-booted, when I ran the new Bootloader, all I get is black screens. If I boot without the bootloader, the radio seems to come up normally. Anyone know about this?
What I would suggest is follow the steps in this video. th-cam.com/video/0IlAiMGlUN8/w-d-xo.html Just select X9D instead of X-Lite whenever necessary. The process of flashing using bootloader is less likely to screw up.
Hey sorry everyone but I was hoping someone could help me out. I bought a TS5823L VTX and I flew it once with bad video reception and when I got it home I hooked up the smoke stopper and it immediately when off. I then ordered a new one thinking something was wrong. got the new one today and it's still doing it. the antenna was hooked up when I tried this and I have flown it LOS while waiting for the new vtx and it flew great. I don't think I'm burning anything out but I'd like a 2nd opinion before just putting it in and flying with the new vtx despite the smoke stopper going off.
The smoke stopper goes off when you draw enough current to light the bulb. If you bought a low-wattage bulb, even the baseline current from the copter will light the bulb. You must use a bulb in the range of about 25 watts, and even then, the bulb can start to light if you have a big video transmitter.
Hey i just got the taranis and updated it also updated the bootloader but every time i turn it on it says Sd card warning Expected version:2.2v0010 And when i try to make a model it also says Script syntax error Wizard.lug:72 Attempt to call field 'lock' (a nil value) and i dont know how to fix it so can anyone please help
Joshua Bardwell ill try that rn thats for responding quickly got really frustrated was about to call it a day but ill try it aha you just made my night thank you so much
Many thanks in advance. I upgraded from 2.0.9 to 2.2.0.. well it wouldnt let me saying its incompatible. So i thought maybe its the bootloader. I Copied the file onto my sd card (on windows it the name shows up as giberish and the folders are named differently, ie: FIRMWARE is FIRMWARES and there is 3 shortcut folders) i pasted the .bin file and renamed it i applied the firmware in the bootloader watched the progress do its thing. Upon turning the radio on i found that nothing was different and verified this was the case also. Heres the strangest part, when i try to enter bootloader the vibrating motor goes full throttle and i get a blank blue screen. Im thinking maybe i did too big a step from 2.0.9 to 2.2.0. Any advice??
im trying to do this for someone who has an ancient taranis and there isnt even a bootloader.. it has 1.1 firmware. i cannot find an old companion to updateee HALP JOSH
Joshua great content! This video helped tremendously with helping resolve an issue I was experiencing with the sd card. Thanks again for a great resource here on TH-cam!
Tmotor air or emax br2205. or zmx 20 or brother hobby t1 motor 2205 or brother hobby R3 motor which shall I buy sir pls don't leave it in my choice pls pls😍😍😍😍 sry what I meant was I wanted you to decide which motor is the best not me
drained all remaining charge also without battery. plugged back in, nothing shows up at all. What I don;t understand is why load the firmware in as the bootloader? Or are they one and the same thing? Because if they are not (maybe I uploaded the wrong file), then I used just uploaded a FW code into the Tx's bootloader which does not make sense. When I tried to do this through Open Companion, OC says the FW is not compatible (read that in other posts people say the same sometimes). I thought it was missing the bootloader so that's why I tried to update that to the same version (2.1.9) for all. Any ideas?
my apologies..I read more materials...the same file has two parts..bootloader and the Tx FW. Anyway, let me try a few things first. Thx for your help (for replying before).
Heres' a really quick way to upgrade both the Taranis OpenTX firmware AND the bootloader all in one simple operation:
1. Remove the battery from your Taranis
2. Fire up the ImpulseRC Driver Fixer and plug your Taranis into the computer. The Driver Fixer will put you into DFU mode
3. Open the Companion; now that you are in DFU mode you will have the choice to flash. Choose your image and click OK
They say necessity is... so I somehow accidentally bricked my radio so it would not even turn on. Since the Taranis uses this the same STM chip that our FC's use, I tried it and it worked the first time through!
Thanks, Joshua for another very helpful video - just wanted to add my experience to the comments ;)

It appears that there must have been a time limit installed on the original firmware as there was no other reason why it stopped binding to the receivers. I tried several receivers but it would not bind to any of them until i updated the taranis firmware and bootloader.
Make sure when you rename the file that you keep (.bin) in the name or it wont work. great video
just spent close to 700 bucks on crossfire and taranis thank you Joshua Bardwell your software installs went amazing... I wouldnt mind a crossfire video :)
In opentx version 2.2.4 there still there, but if I try to update the download for that version it says not available, or something like this.?????😱🎮✈️🚁💨💨
Thank you Joshua! This video series could not have been any better. Helped a lot.
isn't "OPENTX220" 9 total characters?
What was the final version of software available for the X9d+?
The reason I ask is that I have somehow ended up with Version 2.3.5 on mine.
It works fine but I cant get the FrSky XSR-SIM wireless dongle to bind.
Hi Joshua, I can not open bootloader with combined keys after flash to OpenTX 2.4.0, should I consider downgrade to check if there is any issue? Thx!
Hello Joshua, I want to update my Taranis x9e from opentx 2.2.4 to the latest version and in the same time check the box for multiprotocol, but this box is missing now. I also have to check the box for Horus gimbals ( for my already installed and use for over a year, hall gimbals)
But those boxes are disappear. Where are they, do you know that.

Hi Joshua, thanks for the helpful videos you post :)
Is it correct that the V8FRii receivers binded in D8 mode do not link to a "secure" module ID like in the X series receivers? With the older receivers (D and V8-II) you need to be sure you have the correct model memory selected, as the will respond to any model memory that is set to D8?
The D and V8-II series receivers date back to when FrSky was only making modules and per-memory binds were impossible then??
Correct. Only D16 has model match.
Hardware wiring question. Once we wire the smart audio from Vtx to Uartt we don't get the audio from camera. Is there anyway we could get both?
Thank you.... your videos are by far the easiest to follow on TH-cam!
Any ideas?

All the details are bought and go to me. With the diode problem will not it be, but with the chip as after the transplant be? The equipment will start in DFU mode? How to load open tx into the taranis?
You put it in bootloader mode by plugging in USB with power off.
+Joshua Bardwell Can you please detail?) I don't quite understand.
Thank You for this series of videos. I cant wait to for the weekend so I can try to get this working on my RF1 setup.
KrakozFPV Sounds like a driver issues. Go to device manager and plug in the Taranis. Uninstall whatever device pops up when you plug the USB in.
Also you can take the SD card out and put the firmware file on there with a SD card reader. Then update and see if that fixes you usb issue.
Nevermind. Taranis is disconnecting as if it were triggering FailSafe in FPVFreerider. I can lift off, then disco and tumble to crash. Hrm.
Is there any benefit to upgrading bootloader, or is it just a best practice thing?
Good question, I have also never done this. I would like to know also....
me neither. still running 2.16 bootloader and no problems
Thanks again Joshua! You can talk about the bootloader anytime!! :P
Hi Josh, why my SD card is showing folders with this extension "Firmware.exe" I did not created this and on the PC my SD card looks normal. I discover this bug when I was trying to upgrade R9M module, but I am unable to open firmware folder in the Tx. Very strange, also the [ ] are missing from all the folders ".exe" extension.
when I select the bin file I don't get the option to flash bootloader I can see the file but no option to flash
Same for me. How do you fix this?
Yes me too. qx7s w/ 2.2.4 I can see the file, long enter and get Copy, Rename, and Delete. No option to flash boot loader.
Mr. Bardwell, I am trying to update the firmware on my taranis qx7s from 2.2.0 to 2.2.2., I keep getting the message "new firmware not compatible with current version". Do I need to first update to 2.2.1 to get to 2.2.2?
You can usually ignore that message. It means there is a possibility of the models not being converted correctly but usually it's fine.
@@JoshuaBardwell ok, thank you for the response 👍
My x9d plus error 😞 , (script syntax error, wizard. Lua: 72
Attempt to call field 'lock' (a Nil value) . This is what ia written on the screen, when making a new model. Please how to fix it
Thank You for this series of videos. Helps a lot.
+Ryan RyFly Bunnell I haven't seen this, no. But I don't use an external module...
When I add a quad and click on image it shows only - - - -
I think you have to update the SD Card contents to the new file format for 2.2.0. The images are not stored in the same place.
You can still flash it by plugging in USB with power off as shown in this video.
th-cam.com/video/7Q33tztpHyA/w-d-xo.html
mine will not update, no idea why but everything works great up till the last step. the long press does nothing, a short press shows only delete. any thoughts ?
Try using the method shown here, to flash from OpenTX Companion.
th-cam.com/video/0IlAiMGlUN8/w-d-xo.html
It will update bootlader and firmware together.
Could i put an sd card in a reader connected to the computer to put it on there, and from there put it into the radio? The whole issue i have is when i try to get into bootloader the radio doesnt turn on with the trims pushed in
Yes you can do that.
On firmware 2.2.0 and higher, you don't need to be in bootloader to access the USB. Just plug in USB with the radio powered on.
Why does my controller seemingly delete all the file contents of all the folders I transfer? My firmware folder is empty.
any idea for my issue Taranis Q X7?
i have upgraded firmware from Companion software (profile set corectly for proper radio model).
Can you put the firmware on your SD card and update the bootloader from there?
it was so crazy - no bootloader at all - i found that problem was broken USB cable - reflashed with Companion in STM32 Bootloader mode (no battery, only USB connection (new one :)) to computer)
How does one update the bootloader when OpenTX is stuck booting on the splash screen?
Helo masta...i would to seek your help, if you would mind.
I have taranis, but some how i think i do bad step...i accidentally deleted the firmware file in my radio (not in sdcard)...
And now i am not able to write firmaware from opentx companion...
It show error message in my computer "ca not write firmware..(unknown error)"
Would you kind to help me what i need to do...
Currently i am using x9d plus with 2.2.3 firmware
Big thanks
Hi Joshua. Question, I have Taranis x9d plus version 2.2.0 verified after watching your video. On wizard setup the helicopter pic/option is gone. How do I get it back? Thanks for your videos and help.
My guess is you selected the "noheli" option when you downloaded the firmware. Un-check that option in the firmware download box in Companion.
But I don't know for sure as I have never experienced that error.
how I can get the firmware wiyhout companion soft? Is it possible? Or does companion creates the firmware *.bin file?
Joshua, I can't put may QX7 on bootloader mode, when I do the 3 switches, it gives me a blank screen, can you help me with this?
I'm not sure exactly why it's doing that, but I would try flashing it using the DFU mode method.
Plug in USB with power off.
Download and run impulseRC driver fixer. It will find the "flight controller" (the Taranis) and fix the driver.
Download OpenTX Companion and use it to flash the firmware to the radio. It will update the bootloader and the firmware together.
I’ve given up... done everything but still not working. I’ll just use it, without the ability to update anything. Hehehehe. Thanks anyways...
Thanks i have found someone says to uncheck the check for hardware compatibility box ... i cant find that in settings on open tx ??
plus you cant just ignore it ... it wont let you do it .. i have searched for hours to find an answer to this problem cant find where to uncheck the box so am now giving up on LUA scripts its doing my head in ..
i gave it one more try and found the box to uncheck ..awesome now to get lua scripts working .. thanks Joshua
Therefore i loaded FW for the old taranis on my plus version and it didnt like that
trying to do this... when I hold enter on the .bin file name it gives me 3 options only: Copy, Rename and Delete. HELP!
Please look up my video "FrSky xlite opentx" and follow the steps in that video. It shows an alternate way to flash 5hat may work for you.
3S LiPo gives much longer battery life than 2S NiMh. But you can't charge through the external plug any more :-(
Great to know.... well.. if I decide to use 3S LiPo, just plug it in? however to recharge, unplug it and use the same LiPo charger? Do I need to make any mod in the Taranis? Do I get better signal or range with that?
My firmware downloader does not produce that ...en.bin file. I only have the ...en-2.3.11-otx.bin file. How do I get the other file?
I'm not sure what you're asking. The file that Companion downloads is the one you want to flash.
@@JoshuaBardwell Ok. Thanks. I see the file in the video doesn’t have the version number on the end of it. My file does have the version number. I’m still waiting for my SDHC card so I’m unable to actually try it. I’m a newb at OpenTX.
@@JoshuaBardwell I did it! Thanks!
So i updated the bootloader. What did that really do? How about updating the firmware in Rx like the XRS? Does anyone update this? why should I update the Rx firmware? Josh any input?
I Joshua, how to check if my radio is Eu or Fcc. I flash the xjt Eu whit xjt FCC but I can not tell if the flash was successful or not.
If it binds to an eu radio, then the flash was successful.
The only way to see the firmware on the receiver is to use the USB flashing tool. But this is pretty cumbersome.
@@JoshuaBardwell thank you Mr Bardwell.
I'm sorry, I don't know the answer. I've actually never updated my firmware on a receiver this way.
No Problem - thank you for taking the time to reply - If you don't mind me asking what method do you use? USB to SBUS?
Hey Man I was wondering if you could help me, I think I flashed the wrong firmware to my X9D+. As a result the radio seems to be bricked, it won't turn on nor will it enter DFU/bootloader mode, my computer doesn't even recognise when its plugged in anymore. I have downloaded the correct firmware and flashed it using the companion nut the problem has not gone away. Please can you help, I love this transmitter and can't afford a new one. Hopefully you can help me learn something today :'(
It should always enter DFU mode when you plug in USB with power off. Flashing firmware should not be able to break that.
th-cam.com/video/0RvQFaq-Pg8/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=JoshuaBardwell
The solution is to download the right firmware and flash it to the radio using that method.
I'm also updating from 2.1.6 and followed along. I see the same bin file but then when I go to update the bootloader, all I see is copy, rename, delete. What did I do wrong?
I'm sorry, but I don't know. If it didn't work like I showed it here, I don't have a lot to add.
I upgraded to Opentx companion 2.2.3 successfully however, I can't update the bootloader! 🤔
Another method is to flash the firmware by plugging in the radio with power off, using the PC companion app. This updates the bootloader and the firmware at the same time. Check my video about updating the xlite to see how.
I did today version Bootloader - 2.2.2
Thank you Joshua.
I don't have USB to my QX7 now, but I could install OPENTX222 as same way what you taught.
THANK YOU~!!
Used this to flash the EdgeTX bootloader - thanks
Joshua, Thanks for this video, but I need your help. I followed your instructions to update the bootloader, but when I go back to bootloader (powering on with trim buttons in) the screen goes blank and there is a loud buzzing/vibration. The Taranis seems to power on normally, just change get to boot loader screen. When I connect to computer while in the blank screen and vibrating the computer is able to recognize both the sd card and Taranis. I pulled the battery out a couple of times with no change. Please advise.
Uhhhhhhh I dunno. I guess I would re-flash the bootloader. Make sure you have the correct radio type selected before you flash.
I figured it out, am an idiot.
Josh am I able to do all of this on my non plus x9d tyranis radio?
Yes I believe so.
He Joshua, nice one. Can i do this with my horus x10s on opentx 2.2.3 aswell?
You are a Hero ! Greetz from Germany
Did the setup as instructed works perfectly and I don’t get out of memory warning if I use the first page as normal to get the lua pages up I thought that was not supposed to work ? , fantastic job as usual well done. 👍
Thanks JB. FYI - what is the added value of upgrading the boot loader ?
Help??
Fixed it, looks like this is a know bug.
It's in the release notes.
No blue screen nothing... please help
You might have flashed the wrong firmware. Look up my recent video showing how to flash the xlite with opentx companion. Use that method.
I take it bootloader is updating the inbuilt XJT module , can i also use this way to update my external XJT
module thanks for brilliant tutorials
This is not updating the module. The bootloader and etc is something different.
Joshua Bardwell sorry my bad ,do you have a video on updating the internal module XJT
Nice tuto and finaly my 9X bootloader was updated to 2.2, but.... on inicialization screen apears "version not safe to fly(???)"... wh?
I don't get it. I have 2.1.6 on my tarains x9d plus and the only up date for me is 2.1.9. There is no 2.2.0 for mine?
You need to download the 2.2 version of Companion.
Thanks Josh, you just helped me out big time
is there a reason to actually update the bootloader, I mean does it bring new "have to have" features or better efficiency on the system? Just asking as I was wondering if it was worth it...
Yes you should update it just so they're all on the same version. They all rely on each other.
@@JoshuaBardwell thanks, sounds good!
You are a LIFESAVER!!!!!!! Great video! I love your work!!!!
hi, do i need to do something with my reciever too?
OPENTX220.bin is 9 characters
Michael Lundgren was literally going to make this exact comment
FUUUUUUUUUUU
that's 13 characters, unless you're omitting the .bin part, But then why write it.. let's just let go of the details
Only the first one showed up in the Taranis file browser.
its gonna be *OK*
What I would suggest is follow the steps in this video.
th-cam.com/video/0IlAiMGlUN8/w-d-xo.html
Just select X9D instead of X-Lite whenever necessary.
You are life saver mate 👍

UHHM, I just did this, and now when I try to turn on in bootloader mode, nothing happens,, not even the older bootloader.. Im going crazy
Well now Idk who to blame bc I'm new to Frsky, Brand New out the box Qx7, trim doesnt work ffs.. :(
after I did it, bootloader on qx7 don't start at all :(
Many thanks in advance.
+Thiago Cruz I honestly don't know
dang, i need to reset everything i would imagine... without the bootloader this might be difficult. SUggestions?
+Thiago Cruz you could always try the DFU mode to flash the whole thing opentx.gitbooks.io/manual-for-opentx-2-2/companion/flashing.html
When I try to download the firmware in open TX it says error invalid language ?
+3000gtwelder read the release notes on the download page. That exact error message is discussed.
I’m getting SD card error when I try to flash
I get one after flashing and rebooting and then a stuck button error also
silly question... but why would you need to update your bootloader?
im trying to do this for someone who has an ancient taranis and there isnt even a bootloader.. it has 1.1 firmware. i cannot find an old companion to updateee HALP JOSH
Joshua great content! This video helped tremendously with helping resolve an issue I was experiencing with the sd card. Thanks again for a great resource here on TH-cam!
Awesome! Glad to hear it.
What's to be gained by updating the boot loader?
I suspect most people won't notice a difference but it's nice to be up to date.
you will have problems updating your receivers
I don't get the option to Flash bootloader. Any ideas ??

HELP! I did exactly as the instructions and immeditely the Taranis will not power up even! It is the same radio as yours (X9D Plus)
+Chi Tung unplug the battery and re plug it.
drained all remaining charge also without battery. plugged back in, nothing shows up at all.
