I'm going to show you how to adjust PIDs, Rates, and vTX settings from your Taranis. There are three steps to being able to do this. First, you need OpenTX 2.2.0 on your radio, and you need the special "Lua Script" version of the firmware installed. Second, you need to install the Lua script itself and learn to use it. Third, you need to have telemetry set up correctly on your quad. Are you ready? Let's go!

Well...when I unplug the quadcopter battery my Tarranis says "telemetry lost", so if it's lost, I must have had it at sometime. But actually setup, no.

Fantastic this sorted out my TBS unify problem, came up on screen that it was in PIT mode constantly, thought it reset on battery disconnect, anyway sorted now.Thanks again!!!!!!!!!

Hi guys. Installed the PID/RATE/VTX lua script on my Taranis for two of my quads, one quad worked right away with the X4R-SB RX (firmware version not known), but the other quad did not work. After some research, I found that it was a firmware issue with my XSR reciever, all of you that use the Frsky XSR RX, pay attention to the last firmware update, The lua script wont work with XSR170605 firmware, you should update to XSR-170619 firmware to get the data to flow ;)

Hi Joshua Bardwell. I need assistance. I have the R-XSR rx and the QX7 tx. I have followed all your steps.. I'm using a Xracer F303 FC and have connected S.port to UART2 TX. If I go to "Discover New Sensors" on my TX I get about 12 sensors on the list. When I run the script I see it working, but there are no values shown. Please help me.
They should build more video transmitters with "smartaudio" or equivalent protocols. It's so sweet to do not have to play with dipswitches or any kind of push buttons lol
Bad luck for your serie of videos is that the domain which hosts the openTX firmwares is down so a lot of people won't be able to update their radios, maybe just wait until tomorrow...
FuriousFPV is joining the game with their own smart audio VTX. It also has a built in mic so you get to retain your sound if you're into that kind of thing!
I did this on a past build.
But on this new build I can’t actually change any values qx7. I can see them all and change them when plugged in but not via the remote ( I can see the telemetry)
After installing LUA scripts on my Taranis, I hold down the page button and get a 'Use TOOLS menu instead of this' message. when I go to the tools menu and go to the Betaflight setup, all I get is 'Betaflight Config Initialising'. It stays there and does nothing. I have flashed the xsxr to fport, do LUA scripts work with fport. The FC is an old emax femto F3, could that be the issue?

I am able to read out the pids values etc. with my radio with the lua script, but I am not able to change anything via safe page.
I connected the smartaudio out of nano rx to tx of fc, maybe I should connect that to a uart rx pad on the fc?
What's wrong with these port settings?
uart 1: crossfire nano rx and tx
uart 3: smartaudio on output 4 of nano rx
uart 6: tbs unify vtx smartaudio

Running a PikoBLX XSR & UnifyPro V2 but on the VTX it shows no data PIDs show data and telemetry.
I have tried swapping white wire(audio) to TX1 RX1 TX2 but none seem to get me any communication back to Taranis.
PID screen is fine except when I moved the SmartPort to TX1, when I put SmartAudio on TX2 to try this swap then I no longer got telemetry or smartaudio Data.
I also swapped the smartaudo and SmartPort with each swap as needed...
I saw on GitHub a few people were having similar problems but they ended up using a soft serial and it seems Pikos done have them...

And in another attempt I updated BF to 3.2 just to see ... still nothing
Your wiring really seems haphazard.
Audio from vTX goes to SmartAudio UART TX.
SmartPort goes to telemetry UART TX.
Those need to be separate UARTs.

Yes they are separate Uarts. The Piko only has 3 so I have it wired like this
Uart3 RC-XSR (works fine) SBus in BF
Uart2 TX2-SmartPort (works fine) SmartPort Telemetry in BF
Uart1 TX1- SmartAudio no communication to Taranis
When I swap the wires to
TX1 - SmartPort ( no longer works)
TX2- Smart Audio ( still doesn't work)

OpenTX 2.2.0, for me the gps is displayed badly - thought this had been fixed!
I was wondering if changes made to PIDS on the radio take effect on the FC as they are changed....or only until they are "SAVED". So can I keep makeing changes until I find a PID setting/value I like...and then save...or must I save after every adjustment to test it out?
Can u do a video on the 2.3.x lua script with the tool box I think I did it right however it actually fried my stock sd card completely shot replaced my sd card I think it all loaded right but I get stuck on the initialising page after it appeared to run the install setting it up to use the page button just says use tools

Fabulous info as always Joshua, HOWEVER, I followed the video and everything works EXCEPT when I press the MENU and ENT button on my X9D+SE to save the changes it reverts back to the old settings and does not save the changes. I have a SPR F3 board and the telemetry cable of the R-XSR is connected to a SoftSerial port on the FC (unfortunately the UART2 TX pin broke off). Any ideas??
This is a weird one. I wonder if the spracingf3 doesn't do bi directional telemetry. A long time ago you used to have to put a diode between the TX and RX lines to get Smartport to work.

installing a r xsr in your V1 FC. I am getting my telemetry readings but no Lua script. I have triple checked my connections and wired them and configured them in the exact way in your pilots manual. in the step in the above video, " change voltage source to VFAS" I dont have that option, only option I have is "RXBT". why? I also wired the "Tele pad" to the inverted sbus pad in the rxsr. I have wired the VTX per your instructions to the tx4 pad on the fc and I get no information on Lua script page. Any suggestions OB1 on what I did wrong?
If you wired TELE to inverted SBUS then that is your problem. SBUS is not telemetry. You want the SmartPort pad.
For my V1 FC the correct wiring is the yellow wire (SmartPort) from the RXSR to the T pad on the FC. Then in Ports tab UART 3 set to SmartPort telemetry. In the Configuration tab, enable Telemetry feature. Then in CLI type "set tlm_halfduplex=off" then press enter, then "save" then press enter.
Everything is going well but when i put it on script and then go to pids in my taranis.. it just keeps on saying no telemetry even when i power up my quads.. what should i do?
Make sure telemetry is working. Go to the Telemetry screen and do "discover sensors". If you don't see a bunch of sensors come in (look for "vFAS" if you're using smartport telemetry) then telemetry is not working.
I have the scripts folder but even when trying to execute the scripts it does nothing and it says no scripts on sdcard when on page 13, can I have lua scripts on the jumper t12?
Yes the jumper supports Lua scripts. Remember you must copy the entire contents of the scripts zip file which includes content in other folders than just SCRIPTS.
betaflight LUAs work with butterflight? my guess is yes, anyone know for sure?
Just put this on my Diatone GT200N and it worked a treat :), only thing is with the Horus you manually run the script from file manager, I dont beleive the 200N has Smart Audio though?
+Tony Cooper correct. It has a push button transmitter only.
I have to ask the GOD since nobody has the answer. There such a thing as a LUA for TBS Crossfire on a Betaflight board such as the Lux V2. Please let me know it's the thing holding me back from fully jumping to Crossfire.
Hey JB, any word on if TBS or BF will be fixing not being able to turn Pit Mode on or off via Lua Script? I was thinking all was good and I noticed it will not change in the menu and after some investigating it appears its a limitation of Smart Audio, very irritating!

I believe (but not sure) this is a TBS limitation where the Unify won't go back into pitmode after coming out. You'd have to ask them if they plan to change that.
I updated from Opentx 2.1.6 to 2.2.1 and when went to follow this procedure, I found that on the radio menu, I have only 9 pages instead of 13. I don't seem to have a 'Display' page. Any idea what I may have done wrong or what I need to do in order to correct it? I did confirm that I have 2.2.1 installed.

Any way to map the vtx transmission power to one of the turn knobs on the taranis?? This would make it so much easier to change the vtx power output mid flight
No, it can't be done. Betaflight doesn't support changing output power like this. With an OpenTX Lua Script it could be done, but you would still need to be careful, because many vTX glitch when changing output power.
also what would be my correct ch order for the qx7? aetr/taer which drainman fpv used and suggested when he set up a qx7 or is it reta? which looks to me the way the radio comes as default
I set it to the betaflight default order personally.
Well, I used to have this working without problem, I change the frame and now I'm not getting info on the vtx, (tramp, telemetry cable connected to uart 2 and enable on the fc(lux v2) as pherisphal, ) I don't know what happened, just changed the frame :(

Josh, I was not getting telemetry suddenly even though I was previously and was made to understand that I have to upgrade the firmware on frsky XSR etc receivers? Can you refer me to a video on how to do this?

Why does it say no telemetry for me when I did all the steps and have telemetry capable reciever. R9S+. X9d...
Make sure you have bound with "CHANNEL 1-8 TELEMETRY ON" in the Taranis.
Make sure you go to Telemetry screen in Taranis and "discover sensors".
You have the updated scripts for the Crossfire to work correctly. Won’t work right now it seems.

Simple and concise! Thanks for the tutorial. One thing that I've noticed, without going much on a debug mode :-), is that I can only change my PIDs. All the remaining information, like rates and VTX is not filled in. Oh yes and I'm running bfsetup 1.3. Any thoughts?!?
This is a compatibility issue between the script and the Betaflight version. But I don't know the fix.

in 2:08 in you're Taranis_SD Card you have the SCRIPTS Folder but in 2:19 you don't have that folder anymore do you have to delete the folder and then copy the new SCRIPTS folder to the SD card?

Rx is D4RII
FC is Betaflight with 3.1.7
VTX: TBS Unify Pro 5G8 HV
I can see the telemetry data on my fatsharks. PID and TBS settings all fine via goggles, but no data on radio. No clue as to issue. Tried rediscover sensors, but nothing added.
Oh dear ... The issue must be that we tend to wire up the telemetry from the D4R to FC and not bother about the the return Rx on at the receiver. Receiver is not getting back any data from FC.
Even more fundamental than that: D series receivers use the old Frsky telemetry protocol, not SmartPort. You must be using SmartPort to do this.
Got it the wrong way round. Telemetry is being sent from Fc to Rx. My mistake. So it ought to work. Still stuck
So I'm still new to all this. I am not getting any data back either on the acrowhoop v2. Starting now to research and see if it has smartport or can I enable it?

+aubrey vantuyl only difference is it is compatible with the new SD card structure if you flash firmware from bootloader. FIRMWARE vs FIRMWARES for example.
Greetings Joshua! I understand that the telemetry channel returns data from the quad to the active LUA script; but 1) Can you please tell us what channel is used to communicate LUA commands from the TX to the RX? 2) Does it interfere with stick latency or jitter? (I'm particularly interested in setting things up to sync the BF BBL logs with the TX RTC.)

I have had some issues where after selecting "save page" the radio tries for a bit then says "retrying" and then comes back with the original unmodified values. Seems to happen when the main battery is plugged in but not when powered via USB. Maybe a problem with VTX interfering ?
I think that's unlikely.
How are you changing vTX settings without the battery plugged in? I don't know of any vTX that will power up off of USB.
I'm not changing vTX settings, just pids, etc.
I have another quad with a FrSky D8R-II PLUS receiver. Can I use lua scripts with it? How will I connect it if possible? Can I configure the FrSky D8R-II PLUS to get sbus and s port?

Lua scripts don't work with D8 series telemetry. Only Smartport, which is in the D16 receivers.
I guess it will not work with Inav?

Also I just purchased one of the QQ190 Quads and will be Kua Script work with it ?? They had me load 2.0.6 instead of 2.20....not sure if there will be any conflicts ?

I followed this toutorials and now I'm able to see and change PIDs and VTX setup on my taranis but below the lua script pages I always see "no telemetry". There is something that I can do to remove this error? the setup is completed or not?
If you can actually change the values then telemetry is working. So I don't know what the No Telemetry thing is.
Thanks for the fast reply. I solved. In the taranis I have made the search for new sensors and new sensors were added and the message no telemetry disappeared in the Lua script pages.

Joshua, thank for this mate. It adds a great feature to the taranis and makes tuning so much more accessible. Now, obviously this leads to what else can I do with this. In fact, I noted that yaw D gain is absent (commented out in the telemetry script). I may need this for tuning my tricopter running triflight, so removed the comment and it works. Then, when starting to play with changing rates, I noticed whenever I save anything to the copter, the throttle expo reverts to 0.0, which is a bit annoying. My assumption is that the script has zero assigned to the parameter somehow. Here is the question: can I add this parameter to the taranis screen to allow it to be changed and have it set to the desired value when it is written to the copter? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? I note that the BF.lua script assigns indices to each field, but how does this map to parameters in betaflight? Any help would be appreciated. [Did look at lua script documentation "OpenTX 2.2 Lua Reference Guide” but could make out much from it].
+Pieter de Waard there is no yaw D term in Betaflight. I don't know more about how the indices work. I would look into the MSP protocol as I'm sure that is what the indices refer to.
Thanks Josh. Will dig further. The yaw D-term is in triflight (based on betaflight 3.1.7 I think) to deal with tail dynamics of the tail.
So if i install Lua script does it clear all my setting in Taranis since i program 4 dji naza and if it clear all it will be big problem to set them again
Well if you're not sure you better go into Companion and back it up. But it should preserve your models.
I was just looking at Gtune. I think it is an auto PID tuning mode on some fork of betaflight. From what I hear it seems to be pretty good, is there a reason why you haven't done a video on it. I just thought you would as you seem to be the best place to go when looking for PID stuff.

Gtune was completely hit or miss even in the best cases. Also, it only tuned P gain, which is sort of useless. Frankly, I think the best benefit of devs' resources these days is making the defaults fly better, with improved filtering and better PID controllers. Then autotune isn't needed.

Nothing has changed about the installation and use of Lua scripts. You need to download the updated lua script if you updated OpenTX as they all work together: OpenTX, Betaflight, and Lua Script. If you have an outdated version of either one it may not work.

Like I say at the end of the video, it can't work on XM+ because XM+ doesn't support telemetry.
Great job on your videos. I have an Artower f4 plus and an R-XSR I had to solder the uninverted sbus tab to get it to work and soldered to the other uninverted tab for telemetry in. How do I connect to the flight controller for telemetry out to the receiver?

If you're using the uninverted S.Port pad on the RXSR, then you can use TX3 on the underside of the flight controller. You need to go to the CLI and type
set tlm_inverted=on

I have a problem if someone could help me. I have the pids showing up on my QX7 but can't get the vtx screen.
SmartAudio must not be working? Or maybe you loaded the wrong script version?
Is SmartAudio working from the OSD?
Joshua Bardwell it's possible it could be the wrong script but I'm pretty sure I downloaded it from the same link as you did. Smartport works on my OSD so I'm not totally worried about it.

The QX7 can run Lua scripts.
Got the PIDs and Rates working through LUA scripts.....but my Unify Pro Race VTx values are not showing. Any idea why?
Confirm whether SmartAudio is working via the OSD. If not, then the Lua script won't work either.
Finally got it working. Watched your vid about Unify Pro. I didn't have "TBS Smartaudio" enabled in Periperals tab. I mistakenly thought I was supposed to have enabled UART 4 and enable Smartaudio in telemetry tab. Thanks!!!

Any reason for this to NOT work with a D4R-II? I have one currently attached to my Taranis X9D+. The Taranis receives telemetry, such as voltage and current just fine, but no information is showing regarding PIDs or other script related information.
Yes, absolutely it will not work with D4R-II because D series receivers do not use SmartPort telemetry. They use the old Frsky telemetry which is one-way and cannot support smartport.
