Don Matrick almost killed the XBox with his E3 2013 comments & Sony threw shots fired. Thank goodness for Phil Spencer for cleaning up and bring back XBox as a major player, especially the Game Pass.

They got their target audiences mixed up, when they studied the data from the 360 it showed masses of casual users primarily using it to stream Netflix and other video, play EA sports titles, and Call of Duty. They pitched the presentation as if that was who was watching. However casual users don't typically watch these types of presentations. The hardcore gamers who do watch these presentations were more interested in unique gaming experiences, console exclusives, upgraded game features like higher resolution, better graphics, higher framerate, and high end hardware specs. This pitch fell very flat with the hardcore crowd that tuned in.
The thing is they thought they already had the gamers in the bag and it was not making them a decent profit (on Microsoft's scale). Their target for XONE was a billion (!) users (their words). The only way to achieve that was with something more mainstream than core gaming, which is TV and sports. They were 100% aware of what they were doing, but they didn't expect a backlash, because they already had the most desired gaming box. They wanted to extend the user base and instead lost what they already had.

I never saw any Halo videos, CoD is probably going to be pulled by Activision in a few years, Pretty much everything in this presentation got the mark of death except EA sports.

Yeah, except Xbox destroys Playstation in terms of variety of games, number of games released and also quality. Because yes, playing the same copy pasted basic ass third person action game over and over is not quality. Forza Horizon 5 and Psychonauts 2 are better than any game made by Playstation in the last 13 years. Game Pass has revolutionized the industry and Microsoft just closed their best quarter ever. Microsoft also has a higher average metascore than Playstation despite having released twice the amount of games as Playstation. They've recovered from this in a huge way. They're just not selling more consoles than Nintendo or Sony, which doesn't matter because it's not their priority.

ekko26xile i chose nothing in the end because the only franchises i liked (Wipeout and Halo) were killed not to mention that split screen on consoles seems like its being phased out of consoles. Not to mention the cost, PC was, and is so much cheaper compared to console price gouging. Not just the hardware but the games too. The likes of steam put games on sale that you just dont get that kind of deal on console.

It's a bit of a cliche but in years past, it was thought that people in the work place would gather around the "water cooler" to talk about non work-related things such as sports, politics, TV shows, etc. MS thought the Xbox One was going to be the next social hub, aka the "water cooler."
Almost 8 years later and I still remember all the “Xbox go home you’re drunk” memes people were posting straight after this reveal. Truly a legendary moment in gaming history, just for all the wrong reasons if you were Xbox employee at the time xD.
I remember when they said you couldn't share your games and had to be online always. That shit almost made me running away till they reversed their decision. Such a shame they lost so bad that gen. Phil even recently said that XB1 gen was the worse one to lose since that when gamers started building up their digital libraries on consoles.

xbox got bit by the streaming bug hard, mostly because Microsoft has too strong of infrastructure & revenue streams through their other products (office / windows / edge / physical devices / selling your data, etc) to care about the game console that at its conception, was extremely ahead of its time
Future marketing students should learn from this; why you don't market a phone by mentioning its gajillion megapixel camera a hundred times or a car by praising its audio system over actual relevant performance.
The funny thing is: my mom owns an Xbox One S that she primarily uses as a streaming box and Blu-ray player. It genuinely does work well for that use case.

10 years later and Xbox still hasn't been able to recover from this. Its honestly amazing how they managed to completely undo their reputation amongst the gaming community in the span of a few weeks between this and their E3 event that year
It was also 10 years of letting down their hardcore fanbase with lies, such as "Cloud power" etc, and flopping Exclusives.
Yeah, except Xbox destroys Playstation in terms of variety of games, number of games released and also quality. Because yes, playing the same copy pasted basic ass third person action game over and over is not quality. Forza Horizon 5 and Psychonauts 2 are better than any game made by Playstation in the last 13 years.
Game Pass has revolutionized the industry and Microsoft just closed their best quarter ever. Microsoft also has a higher average metascore than Playstation despite having released twice the amount of games as Playstation.
They've recovered from this in a huge way. They're just not selling more consoles than Nintendo or Sony, which doesn't matter because it's not their priority.

ekko26xile i chose nothing in the end because the only franchises i liked (Wipeout and Halo) were killed not to mention that split screen on consoles seems like its being phased out of consoles.
Not to mention the cost, PC was, and is so much cheaper compared to console price gouging. Not just the hardware but the games too. The likes of steam put games on sale that you just dont get that kind of deal on console.

I would argue now that Xbox is the better console I got it in 2015 for fallout 4 because I looked into and I realized Phil Spencer knows what he is doing he was put in charge at a lousy time but I can assure u with him at the helm the next Xbox will crush the PlayStation I predict Xbox will sell consoles at a loss to get an edge on sony (Sony can't afford this luxury) and I also believe the exclusives will get better because Xbox keeps buying every studio they come across eventually they'll own the market lol

It's just an expression representing a place of social gathering. It's a bit of a cliche but in years past, it was thought that people in the work place would gather around the "water cooler" to talk about non work-related things such as sports, politics, TV shows, etc. MS thought the Xbox One was going to be the next social hub, aka the "water cooler."
This has a realistic chance of going down as Microsoft's version of the Sega Saturn.

I remember when they said you couldn't share your games and had to be online always. That shit almost made me running away till they reversed their decision. Such a shame they lost so bad that gen. Phil even recently said that XB1 gen was the worse one to lose since that when gamers started building up their digital libraries on consoles.

Xbox have a more powerful hardware, better ecosystem (PC, cloud, mobile, play anywhere), backwards compatibility, it's 2024 and PS still don't have a good backwards compatibility, it's a shame.
Not to mention better services like game pass, and Live is stabler than PSN.
Only thing good that Sony have is some ex-clusive games, but this topic is completely based on personal taste, and imo, MS games are better.
