Even considering the grippy conditions, the Land Cruiser is killing it. Toyota has achieved near Land Rover level traction control combined with really good articulation. Once this thing proves itself reliability wise, all the haters should quiet down.
Wash your mind in the blood of Jesus seven times. But one time is enough to clean it. On a bright side, 6 inches was always enough and highly recommended, just in case.
With JUST 8”. This is due to the awesome engineering that’s with this vehicle. Tinker’s Adventure does a one of a kind phenomenal job at in depth detail.
Exactly right. Articulation range is exceptional. Its not always about the height but the combination of height and droop. This is what makes the LC exceptional.
I've been waiting for this Mountain Test Course video...I really can't believe how poised the LC looked on those climbs. Granted the conditions were favorable, but it scurried up like a mountain goat with no missteps lol. This latest series has been great, your overall production quality and drone work help capture the "sense of adventure" well. Can't wait to see some of your new vehicles handle the snow!
Wow! They start at $63k and go to $102k here in Australia. That is only $41k to $64k US dollars. Usually things cost more here. We had a win this time.
I think the technology is awesome! The hybrid combo is something Toyota has perfected over the years in other models. I have 5th gen 4Runner and live in the mountains. It’s a struggle buggy when pulling steep grades. I would gladly welcome 465lbs vrs 280lbs from the old 6 banger. I will most likely be trading to a 1958 LC over 6th gen 4Runner, the look, build and features have got me thinking seriously.
All those here moaning about ground clearance, just watch the video of this thing making his entire course look easy. Then watch the other vehicles struggle , the ones with farm tractor-like on road manners.
Great rig. Fun to have a place to play. Or in your case, 2 places w/out the need for buying a Discovery Pass. BTW, if you really want that tilt/pitch angle #. Use your iPhone. Put it on the dash flat and you will get #'s. It is not of course 100% accurate but close enough for a point of reference for your viewers. The app to use would be, measure. Then use the level in it. I have done this and it is interesting. I used to just use a water bottle to get an eyeball idea on camera on how much angle I was at going up and or down obstacles until I found that item. Hope that helps. :)
You’ve got to see Australian reviews, they hate this thing. They’re upset that it’s heavier, the 4WD is worse, lack of ekdss, the trunk space is less, and the motor is strained with a lesser tow capacity.
@ in my opinion Australians are whiners. I agree they received old motors like 2TR-FE and diesel 1GD-FTV which have been used in previous models. Yes North America got a better torque hybrid but I think Toyota either way knew Australia would need tried engines. However, I have known those who have bought it in Australia, besides smaller truck space and price, the SUV has been superb and even better than previous gen.
It’s hard to beat, I’ve put 12k miles on mine, lots of mountains and still no rattles, I have a TRX that sits now and also a FJ cruiser, this thing just drives good, I do wish it had a little bigger tank, but not a deal breaker.
I seem to be the only person who finds it RIDICULOUS that an $80k Land Cruiser has barely over 8" of clearance...but any Subaru has 8.7" and the Wilderness trims have 9.2"? Heck, even the Rav4 TuRD has 8.6" and the old Tacoma and 4Runner have 9.4"! Obviously, the Land Cruiser is incredibly capable, maybe more than any of the others I listed. But imagine how much better it would be with an extra inch. Is that too much to ask, especially with that kind of price tag and the Land Cruiser namesake?
its all about balance! you cant have everything! its made to be more fuel efficient, its already heavier and taller than a subaru and it has to still perform as much if not even better in most conditions.
Not to mention it's made in Mexico and Toyota ts scamming everyone on the price they are getting everything made cheaper and getting government green energy handouts and charging the consumer 20% more. It's absolutely ridiculous and they are paying the price for it with their sales going down.
love the land cruiser videos! I have a 1958 im slowly saving up money to dump the initial mods into but enjoying it right now in its factory form. Waiting for all the land cruiser haters to want you to do the same trail when its dry because it did too well.
I am addicted to watching these video's, who would have ever thought that just watching someone test drive cars and putting them to their limits would be so satisfying lmfao! Ryan thank you so much for your video's my brother, I'll continue to watch and support 🙂
As a viewer, it's hard to tell how difficult and steep the trail is; it would be helpful if you could compare other vehicles "We tried this in a stock 4Runner, and this is as far it got", etc...
I love my 2024 Off-road Premium with KDSS, very good articulation. Use it most of the time for Overlanding, fully loaded with weight. Because of my needs bought it with rock rails, Wildpeak LT 265/70R17 tires. Added PowerBrake big brake kit in front, d-line on back. Added full length roof rack UPTOP overland, Bilstein 6112 1 inch lift and 8100 Bypass in rear, also diff breathers for rear diff and locker. Very happy, runs great on highway and off-road. Bilstein 8100 bypass and PowerBrakes, Wildpeak LT tires big improvement for my Overlanding. Land Cruiser could not hold all my gear and my 4Runner more off-road worthy at $18,000 less with upgrades. Plus proven reliability with no turbo engine.
Sounds like you have a nice set up but the motor diff is so big it’s hard to explain, Those feel like they are totally gutless after driving the Land Cruiser for awhile.
@drivingsports In terms of off-road ability, LC300 is better thank LX, especially LC300 GR Sports, with a much lower price. Don't understand why LC300 is not available in North Amerca.
This LC is continuing to impress me. I do have a question regarding the traction control system. I was watching some of the Australian reviews, since the new Prado 250 just launched there recently. It looks like if you're in Normal drive mode and either not selecting an MTS mode or do not have the center diff locked, A-TRAC/MTS doesn't do a whole lot. It was only when they either manually selected an MTS mode or locked that center Torsen diff did A-TRAC engage. Is that your experience? (Keep in mind these are bone stock vehicles from either the press fleet or local dealerships there.)
With the base 1958 trim it engages ATRAC when you go into 4-low. I don’t think it requires the center to be locked. (Though I did not test that specific scenario.) it’s my understanding that MTS and ATRAC are only on when either the MTS button is pushed or in 4Lo.
@ thanks! Some of the reviewers were surprised by the lack of traction control mediation. I guess we’ve all gotten used to crossovers and their active systems 😂.
Lower stock ride height gives best suspension travel compared to lifted vehicles. My stock GX550 Overtrail has more suspension travel than a friend's very modded, very lifted GX. Some TH-camrs demonstrate how this works, on hydraulic lifts. It is (for example) why Lexus did not lift the GX550 Overtrail, compared to other models. Suspension travel/articulation is superior, when offroad😊
That's kinda reductionist, and not accurate tbh. It all depends on how you achieve the lift and how, if at all, you modify the geometry of the vehicle. Throwing spacers on? Yeah, that's not helping (and arguably is hurting). Proper medium or long travel kit? You will absolutely gain travel. There's also plenty of circumstances where there's more of a balancing act. Clearance (and the associated improvements in approach/departure angle are very impactful on many trails and obstacles. Anyone who's scraped their underbody to hell in a rock garden can attest to that.
@@Gandalf_The_Jacked Lexus engineers explained it themselves, why they did not lift the GX Overtrail. No offense but I'll take their word over a comment section naysayer 100% of the time. My friend over on the channel Tinkerers Adventures perfectly demonstrates it too.
@@lunamaria1048 No offense taken! I don’t think you really understood my original reply. But hey, stock drivers can enjoy their suspension travel and those modifying their GX for harder trails will keep doing what I’ve described. 🤝
@@Gandalf_The_Jacked I understand perfectly that you did not interpret my reference. Articulation can not be increased by raising your vehicle, and suspension travel is not increased by raising the vehicle. You reduce travel and articulation with lifts and increase tire size. Engineers at Lexus are Japanese like me, so understand that articulation is the most important factor in off road performance, because it keeps your tires on the ground, and maximizes traction. Even Australian off road enthusiasts favor smaller tires for that reason, and laugh at the tire sizes used in the west. Only Americans think 35"-37" tires on midsized 4x4s improve performance lol
This pushing up is thanks to rear way bar that keep weight distribution even. Thats why its so capable when fornt swaybar is disconnected. Rear swaybar push front end down, to maintain all 4 wheels on the ground.
Alright dessert before thanksgiving dinner love that color. I have followed your entire series on that land cruiser. Awesome video have a good Thanksgiving holiday.
Toyota should offer a factory installed off road suspension lift, wheel and tire option for the Land Cruiser, something like a 1-2” lift, 17” x 8.5” wheels with 285/70 R17 BFG KO3 tires.
You should just drive up with 4 low and engage the features when needed to show how capable it is without needing all those extra things. My TRD off-road Tacoma is a beast and in the 4 years I’ve had it I’ve used crawl control once and the locker like 4 times. All those features engaged in most those situations is a bit of overkill.
Issue with this truck is the abysmal range on a tank, its got a less than 18 gallon tank. Think about that. The original estimate was 28mpg from Toyota, then it got revised down. Many owners are getting sub 20mpg, making for tiny cruising range. Then theres the price and low ground clearance.
I think anything over 8 and a bit is enough. My old Volvo XC70 had 8.3 and it could go places most people would not go, like switchbacks with 6" rock stair steps climbing 3000ft in less than a mile - a place where the only other vehicles were modified Jeeps. Approach & departure is another story and where a lot of vehicles have issues... People modify their 4x4 to ridiculous level but most don't even realize the places they are going could be done by a regular sedan..... IMHE, you spend most of your trips getting to the destination, so there is a huge price to pay for basically just looking cool. FTW, I current have a Jaguar F-Pace, which is basically the same as the Range Rover Velar. It has no mode controls, you just push the APC button (Automate Progress Control) and it will do whatever it takes to keep things going. Between that and good tires, it's pretty unstoppable. It's a bummer Jaguar basically gave up, although it's reliability has lived up to reputation, it's just not reliable.
The ground clearance is adequate for the wheelbase on this truck. The key is to get big tires and lots of articulation while keeping the vehicle short and low. A sequoia with its wheelbase and ground clearance is absolutely terrible.
Is anyone else disappointed Toyota chose to make the worst in class ground clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, or that they put the spare tire behind the axle instead of on the back? I am.
Tinkers Adventure’s channel actually goes into depth regarding the ground clearance not being a concern due to the engineering behind the vehicles wheel articulation. Give it watch! Japanese engineering at its finest.
Love your channel. I dont know how you sit so close to the steering column. Looks uncomfortable. From a safety perspective u sit too close. Do the wrist test. Extend ur arm. The wheel should rest on the inside of ur wrist. That’s based on airbag safety recommendations. But maybe for off-roading sitting closer does make more sense.
ok so now for the important question in south africa we only get the prado 250 (american spec land cruiser) with a 2,8 diesel with a 48v hybrid system, with 200ish hp and 370ish ftlb, or the gx550 with the same turbo v6, with the same power and torques you get from the gx550 at the same price give or take, is the extra fuel usage worth the extra 200ish hp and 150nm of torque?
Great review, love your videos. Question...with the way Stillantis is going and the quality issues with their Wranglers (currently leasing a "WILLYS" edition hybrid) im considering the landcruiser basic edition or even a RAV4 Woodland edition. Whats your thoughts or recommendation? Im afraid the wrangler is not a good long term choice.
I think you might like the step up in comfort of the Land Cruiser. You may not like the step down in capability of the RAV4 (seats aren’t great either IMHO.) But you’ll also get a pretty big hit with MPGs in the LC.
3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1
Didn’t even scrape the rear bumper. It looked to me like you scraped the spare tire.
I would love for you to get under it with a tape measure and show us exactly where the 8" of ground clearance is. Clearly there's more than that under the rocker, looks like there's more than that under the front skid plate too. I'm thinking maybe it's at the rear diff?
We did that in an earlier video. It's closer to 9-inches with the slightly larger tires, as measured from the rear diff. I believe the official measurement was the low section up front.
@drivingsports Thanks, I must have missed that video. I measured my 5th gen 4Runner, with an aftermarket skid plate it has a little under 8" under the front skid. I do bang that skid fairly often, but the worst part is when I come off an obstacle and the front suspension compresses, then I have even less clearance and smash down on a rock. Typically I try to get my tires on the larger rocks to give myself more clearance, but it's not always practical.
I wonder how many of these make if off road any more than your average car. I’d like to see a plug in hybrid version of this where they remove all of the mechanical 4WD bits and replace them with the Rav4 Prime system, but perhaps a larger battery. Market it as the Land Poser or the Faux Cruiser and own it. Then use it to efficiently get to Home Depot, Costco and the kids soccer practice while looking cool. I love the looks of this but I don’t need to have all that cool authentic 4WD equipment. Thinking I’m actually in the majority. God I hope 8 inches is enough.
So basically it did rub at a bunch of places. All unnecessary if Toyota gave it more clearance than a Subaru. It wasn’t a big deal here as you are in soft dirt, but if you were in rocks like Moab etc things would be different where the dirt would not give way. Fyi Edmunds has shown the LC has more articulation than the Gx550, as well as better break over and departure angles.
Waiting for you to do a video speaking or just mentioning how far you are getting on a single tank seeing that Toyota made only a 17.9 gal available in the US
I wonder where you live but you should be happy. Plus having 4 cylinder does not mean it’s inferior car. You are despising a very capable car because you think it’s a 4 cylinder. Here in Uganda we buy that double the price. Because we pay 110% import tax. I know you shouldn’t live by my standards but you can buy cayenne or urus if $80k is a big deal. lol.
465 ft/lbs of Torque is better than most V8s. Also, 25mpg hwy. That combo is unbeatable by anything else. Also: Toyota. I cannot even say Dodge without vomiting.
@@johntuttle9544This. The peak torque in the i4 turbo kicking in at lower rpm range makes the engine feel way more responsive and capable than the previous NA V8 where the peak torque kicks in closer to redline
"I love what you do for me, Toyota." - Toyota - Does anyone remember those commercials back in the day. It'll be cool if they brought that back! Thanks for the videos, Ryan.
Here in Australia this vehicle is called a Toyota Landcruiser Prado. The Toyota Landcruiser is a totally different vehicle. A much bigger vehicle with a 6cylinder turbo.
Could be, but in a month/season/year those vehicles wont be brand new anymore and that percentage will steadily rise. Not sure if that is a complaint or what but it's nice to know a vehicle has certain capabilities even if they wont immediately be fully exploited. No different to a sports car being used for "track" stuff.
It would be awesome to know which vehicles have made it to different stages of the test course. I remember the Crosstrek Wilderness stopped mid-way, and it sounds like the Ranger and Grenadier made it to the top. I.e. Does this put the Land Cruiser in the same 'bracket' as the Ranger and Grenadier, in terms of capability? How much more capable is this than, say, a Subaru?
Look at those trees. And the grass doesn’t look good either. What happened on that ridge? Is it a former nuclear testing site? It sure looks like a waist land!
It's Central Washington. It's high desert. We have rattlesnakes and pine trees. The trees that were here burned in a fire about 12 years that took out most of the area. Some baby pines are just now starting to sprout up once again.

With those tires upgrade there is no line that could stop Your Toyota at your mountain test course. Great review. Greetings
Agreed tires make a huge difference. Since I'm a contental person I would put a set of grabber atx on that vehicle.
Is the spare tire the factory spare? Any issues with using the factory spare with your Falkens?
Spare matches the wheel/tires mounted. They’re 33s.
What the specs of your tires and wheels? Did you lift your landcruiser?
The ground clearance is adequate for the wheelbase on this truck. The key is to get big tires and lots of articulation while keeping the vehicle short and low. A sequoia with its wheelbase and ground clearance is absolutely terrible.
Is anyone else disappointed Toyota chose to make the worst in class ground clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, or that they put the spare tire behind the axle instead of on the back? I am.
No
Tinkers Adventure’s channel actually goes into depth regarding the ground clearance not being a concern due to the engineering behind the vehicles wheel articulation. Give it watch! Japanese engineering at its finest.
This is the Toyota way. It’s how they’ve almost always done it and it seems to have worked out fine
its a single data point, and one that clearly isn't an issue if you watched the video.
Also no.
Didn’t know you were that close. I’m in Yakima lmaooo
DStv much love from tanzania
Love your channel. I dont know how you sit so close to the steering column. Looks uncomfortable. From a safety perspective u sit too close. Do the wrist test. Extend ur arm. The wheel should rest on the inside of ur wrist. That’s based on airbag safety recommendations. But maybe for off-roading sitting closer does make more sense.
That’s actually how close I am. You can’t trust what you see on camera.
@@drivingsportsahhh. Good job on the channel. I like it
I love how these vehicles look, but the raised floor in the rear cargo area and the fact the rear seats dont fold completely down sucks.....
Awesome demonstration! What are the specs of the wheels and tires you are running? And did you have to do any changes to get them to fit? Cheers!
ok so now for the important question in south africa we only get the prado 250 (american spec land cruiser) with a 2,8 diesel with a 48v hybrid system,
with 200ish hp and 370ish ftlb, or the gx550 with the same turbo v6, with the same power and torques you get from the gx550 at the same price give or take, is the extra fuel usage worth the extra 200ish hp and 150nm of torque?
Did you remove front small wind deflectors?😊
Yes. Those would have been ripped off by now if we didn’t remove them.
Too bad you guys don’t get the jimny across in the US. Would like to see it tackle the course.
Didn’t even scrape the rear bumper. It looked to me like you scraped the spare tire.
Doing some actual ground clearance measurements on vehicles you test would be interesting.
Have you been seeing what dissent off-road have been doing with their Land Cruiser? Its been fun to watch
Yup, good stuff!
Would love to see first oil change video and oil samples? If you can make a video that would be great
I would love for you to get under it with a tape measure and show us exactly where the 8" of ground clearance is.
Ravi pour vos essais qui sont sans aucun doute les meilleurs.
I don’t know why 6th gen 4Runner and 4th gen Tacoma off road models do not come with steel front skid plate like this one.
Just come up to Alaska, we’ve had snow FOR a month already!! 😂
man, and that is valid question 😳
How did you make it through Fortune Creek trail with just 8 inch of ground clearance last time? Anything stock will 100% have skid plate damage..
Good driving? (No skid plate damage.)
8” is never enough!
Go figure that!
Want to see 'vs. Subaru's 9.5" Outback Wilderness' on the same day same exact condition.
How much psi you put with this AT tire for daily ? I recently purchased KO3 for my lc250, and find there are many debates on how much psi we put.
Currently at 48psi. Much nicer at 35, however.
Is 8 inches enough is something I never have to ask myself. 😩😩😩😩
Waiting for you to do a video speaking or just mentioning how far you are getting on a single tank seeing that Toyota made only a 17.9 gal available in the US
Range is abysmal. Thankfully gas stations are plentiful in the USA. Even in the most remote areas you're never more than 200 miles from one.
in one word, which one is better? this Land Cruiser or 4Runner 2025?
Haven’t driven the new 2025 4Runner. We test it in January. With Torsen center diff, the LC has advantage.
@drivingsports Nice wheels. Wait a minute. Those are stock wheels?😮
$80k for 4 cylinder Toyota. Come on. People complaining about Ram.
I wonder where you live but you should be happy. Plus having 4 cylinder does not mean it’s inferior car. You are despising a very capable car because you think it’s a 4 cylinder.
Here in Uganda we buy that double the price. Because we pay 110% import tax. I know you shouldn’t live by my standards but you can buy cayenne or urus if $80k is a big deal. lol.
If it was a V8 it would be 90K
465 ft/lbs of Torque is better than most V8s. Also, 25mpg hwy. That combo is unbeatable by anything else. Also: Toyota. I cannot even say Dodge without vomiting.
@@johntuttle9544This. The peak torque in the i4 turbo kicking in at lower rpm range makes the engine feel way more responsive and capable than the previous NA V8 where the peak torque kicks in closer to redline
The 1958 is 59k. All you really need is
"I love what you do for me, Toyota."

Does anyone remember those commercials back in the day. It'll be cool if they brought that back!
Thanks for the videos, Ryan.
Looked like it went up better than the Grenadier
Well done Landcruiser! With all that traction, why not try that steep steep steep part? ;)
Lolz.
@@drivingsports It's gotta happen sooner of later. lol
@@EZapar Anytime you're ready. It's waiting for you.
@@drivingsports :). We gotta set it up before the rains. After that, nothing's going up it.
@@EZapar Too late now, already have squishy snow on the hill. That dirt is saturated with moisture until it freezes.
are these original toyota rims?
Here in Australia this vehicle is called a Toyota Landcruiser Prado. The Toyota Landcruiser is a totally different vehicle. A much bigger vehicle with a 6cylinder turbo.
Yes. We know. And it’s only 2-inches longer with the same wheelbase as this Prado. We can get the turbo 6 with the Lexus GX version.
want a challenge see what happens running it all in Awd without the terrain features
This looks like the newest defender should have looked like
That hill looks steep even on camera, so it has to be intimidating in real life!
What % of owners actually use their brand new $60-$80,000 vehicle offroad?!? I’d guess < 3% and 2.75% of those have TH-cam channels
I bet 3% of owners of any 4wd use them off road. Just because you can’t afford it doesn’t prove it’s a waste of money
I sure did on my brand new 4runner, was happy to get the first scratch out of the way. No use in paying for the systems if you aren't going to use it.
Toyota, insuperable
Came straight to the comments lol
It would be awesome to know which vehicles have made it to different stages of the test course. I remember the Crosstrek Wilderness stopped mid-way, and it sounds like the Ranger and Grenadier made it to the top.
I.e. Does this put the Land Cruiser in the same 'bracket' as the Ranger and Grenadier, in terms of capability? How much more capable is this than, say, a Subaru?
I would never take such pricey vehicle off road. Just get a beater truck for fun in the dirt.
Title of this vid: "Is 8-Inches Enough?"
That's what he said😏
Look at those trees.
