My Grandfather bought a 1996 Land Rover Discovery brand new off the lot and he said it was in and out of the shop constantly. He put 250,000 miles on it and after 10 years of issues, he donated it to the boy-scouts (he's an eagle scout himself). He then purchased a 2006 Toyota Land Cruiser with the 4.7 V8, brand new. To this day, he still has that Land Cruiser and it just hit 400,000 miles. He keeps it meticulously maintained and says it has never once let him down. He could have easily purchased a newer model over the years, but he'll be the first to tell you that he LOVES his 100 series. A true testament to Toyota reliability.

Excellent review, I really want to upgrade my RAV4 to the new Land Cruiser or 4Runner. One thing I’ve noticed from all the videos out there is the inability of folks to realize how useful the cargo space or “third row” cup holders and USB-C ports really are when you fold the seats down and turn that space into a bed for camping or just an area to kick back with the tailgate open. I’m so glad Toyota left them for all models, because they’re so much more useful than reviewers give credit. I can’t wait to hop back there and have a place for my beverage, and a place to charge my phone or tablet. Nice work, Toyota!
I drove a 1968 Land Cruiser. I was in high school in 1974 and it had “three on the tree”. I love being involved with the vehicle while driving. Also easy to fix. Lots of room under the hood. I could hide in the engine bay.
The Land Cruiser is legendary! I’d consider buying this new body style as long as the price is right. Based on what you’ve shown us it seems well built but where is it assembled? Still remember the old days when my grandpa would take us to the mountains in his ‘85 Land Cruiser wagon and us kids in the back were like tumbleweeds moving from side to side on every curve without seatbelts or even seats! 😳 Sad to see it go when he stopped driving rather than passing it on to one of his sons or the grandkids. RIP Grandpa 😔
What do you mean in the back? Also the Prado massively downgrade by removing the spare tire from the rear door and making it a hatch. Literally every mall crawler now has a spare on the back and what does Toyota do?😂 That Prado used to have a 39.6 gallon fuel tank. This new Prado has a 21 gallon tank, laughable! Toyota is fumbling so hard right now. TNGA has been a disaster for capability.
60kg max basically means you cannot use the trunk for anything useful. You could not even sleep in there. The hybrid thing is completely killing the purpose of that car.
BIG problem! I didn’t even know that, I know the battery pack can not take too much weight but only 60kg is laughable. It’s the Land Cruiser, even a Camry can hold heavily load than this
Your videos have equipped me with so much knowledge that I feel empowered to never get taken advantage by a shop again as well as feel confident about what's going on with my car in between visits.

Toyotas used to be easy to purchase, economical cars, reliable, without major recalls, good technology. Not anymore. Hard to get, stubborn company and dealerships, outdated techs, jacked up prices compared to features , lagging behind in tech so much
Toyota/Lexus are still more reliable than 99% of other brands. No car brand is perfect. Toyota/Lexus always had some issues and recalls. They just had way less issues than its competitors. You can't expect modern-day, high-tech vehicles to be as reliable as a basic mechanical, no computer vehicles built in the '70s, '80s and early '90s. The recalls represents a small fraction of the total number of vehicles built by Toyota in that time period.
Lol what a ridiculous comment...go buy a corolla or corolla cross? If you want a $10 k brand new car, who sells that in America? Even the Mitsubishi mirage is going to set you back close to $20 k after taxes. Go blame American consumers and the government regulations. Gotta hand it to Toyota engineers, my 2013 Lexus ES hybrid batteries are 11 years old and the vehicle gets precisely the same mileage it did new. And in 11 years battery tech and wear leveling has improved even more, so I wouldn’t be too concerned with the batteries “not lasting” - something I hear from many non hybrid owners often.
@imnotusingmyrealname4566 and that guy is full of shit anyhow. This guy wants to make people think that everyone he knows all own Toyotas and Lexus' and not one ever had a single issue and nothing ever replaced even after hundreds of thousands of miles. He works, eat and sleeps Toyota and we'll probably jerks to them also.
This is a Landcruiser in name only, imo. I will take the GX 550 offroad trim model. Great review, brother, as always. AMD is the best thing that ever happened to Toyota/Lexus
GX has equally bad powertrain. Older GX used 1UR-FE V8 engine which was bulletproof along with KDSS and a solid truck platform, offroad king. Older LC used 3UR engine V8 which is reliable beast. This LC is a joke, only in the name and weak 4 popper garbage engine. Interior is also a joke. Toyota dropped ball big time for Trucks. Only worth is 4Runner 2024.
@alexsmba IS, GS, RC don't have any Toyota variants, and the F line which uses 2UR -GSE engine was never put in any Toyota commercial consumer cars either. And what's wrong with better quality Toyota ? 2GR FKS V6 is used in Camry BUT also in Lexus, with a much better NVH and interior.
I really appreciate “simple” as a guy who does all my own work, and as an aviation guy. Aircraft are inherently simple machines believe it or not. Even the avionics are heavy, robust, simple and serviceable with multiple redundancies.
Scotty is entertainment, don’t take anything he says seriously. He literally said do not buy hybrids because the starter will wear out. (They don’t have starter motors)
This video is the best review I’ve seen from an engineering perspective. Seeing the mix of old and new brings me peace of mind regarding longevity. It’s like a modern 80 series.
Toyota LC's were 4 cylinders before they became 8 cylinders..i would argue that the 4 CYL are a better choice for what the LC was originally designed to be
@@legion1630 You may be correct. It’s not that it’s a 4cyl. It’s the fact that you are paying v8 money (arguably, v12 money. But I digress) for a 4cyl.

I honestly love the simplicity that the new Land Cruiser transmit. Thanks my dear friend for this and all your videos. You are a role model in this world. GOD bless you, your family & your fellow mechanics. Cheers
A wonderful and thoughtful review on what appears to be a nice vehicle. Looked like a worthy replacement for my 2017 Forester until I looked up the price of the "base" 1958... 55,000 dollars. Well, I had my daily laugh! Toyota could have offered a more affordable base by having a part-time 4 wheel drive, crank windows, no heated seats or steering wheel, no rear wiper, a front-wheel drive only version using the ECVT from the Rav 4. I realize these deletions would detract from the over all appeal and all-purpose character... but 55,000 dollars, plus dealer markups, plus taxes... this will end up costing 70 thousand plus when all is said and done. Which makes this vehicle another failed effort of the auto industry that is not affordable for the masses.
I live in fairly affluent area. These rigs will be parked at boutique stores and fancy restaurants. Probably won’t see these on a dirt road for another 10 years or so. The only people who will care about the skid plate or load height will be the ones who buy this LC in 15 years as a used vehicle.
200 Series owner here. My 2013 just turned over 200k miles. Ive thought about these, but I dont want the 4 banger or even the turbo 6. Ill keep my big gas guzzling 5.7 for another 200k miles before I think about it again.
I’ve literally been binge watching every video on this channel and the other channel. I LOVE IT AND IM HOOKED. Can we get to see some bmw (x5/6 with the n63) or Kia (k5 2.5 NA engine) content pls?
I’m a huge fan of your channel, AMD! Your enthusiasm for Land Cruisers is incredibly infectious-I didn’t even notice I was hooked for an entire hour. I own a Land Cruiser Prado 120 series equipped with the 1GR-FE engine. I’d really appreciate a detailed review of this model on your channel. Keep up the great work!
No. The LX 570 (LC 200) is a proper Land Cruiser and you can get a CPO for around the same price. The build quality and interior is hilariously better.
I love it and as a 60 year old mechanic in Australia I have had many Toyotas and covered millions of kms and never ever had a breakdown, I’m ordering one. We are getting the diesel.
Anything turbo I'd run 91 to always have advertised power output, the more load or even towing its nearly required or it start pulling timing. The knock sensors will save the motor at cost of horsepower and mpg. Nearly every modern turbo maker says 87 but its kinda lowest common denominator type thing.
I own a 96 LC (Prado) with a Automatic Tranny hooked up to a 1KZ Turbo Diesel, never did anything more than basic Service, even the alternator and AC compressor is still original and I've got more than 600k miles, still running like a dream and I bet when this new Prado gets old it's gonna end up in a workshop while mine will be still running, never had one issue and it never let me stranded
In about a year I hope to have mine. The TNGA-F platform is a great thing for the aftermarket industry. This video is the best review I’ve seen from an engineering perspective.
No reviewer mentions or criticizes the loss of the tailgate. It is almost as if Toyota made that a requirement of borrowing the vehicle. Every Land Cruiser driver of 60, 80, 100 or 200 series loves and wants the tailgate. It should not have been deleted!
It's crazy to think the amount of Engineering in a vehicle like this. We just get in our vehicles and drive and sometimes it takes an amazing review like this to make you realize the level of thought and planning that has to go into this
18:39 the cover is designed to also protect the threads on the front control arm. I guess the skid plate could have been designed larger to close that gap but a skid plate is designed for strength, not as an airdam, aero surface or debris shield, matter fact Ive seen them pick up a lot of river stone, mud.
I worked in Chrysler Plymouth Dealership as a Tech in 80s and 90s. They put turbo engines in lots of vehicles. Overall we had very little issues with them. Can't believe all these yrs later they couldn't have it perfected

I just traded my 23 GRC CE for a 1958 LC on 7/31. Loved the GRC (which I bought partly due to CCN’s review), but I just never drove it. After seeing the LC in person and driving it for a few miles, I told my salesman let’s do some numbers. It is perfectly sized and I think a lot of the money went into the drivetrain. It is super smooth and so much better feeling than the 3.5 in my old 18 Tacoma TRD Pro. I love the cloth seats and simplicity. Just my opinion. I’m one of those people who always wanted a LC but couldn’t swing 90k for the previous one.
Thank You Amhed for such an in-depth review, you are spot on my friend! I grew up driving the family's 1968 Land Cruiser, a big long 4door beast that could go anywhere, it had 16 forward gears, 4 reverse and a Mercedes diesel if memory serves me correctly. In any event, I'm 65 now and have always wanted a Land Cruiser but could never afford one, so I bought the next best thing.... you guessed it Toyota 4Runners! I would plunk down the coin for the 1958 but I just can't get past the Turbo 4 Cylinder and the Battery pack in the back with a limit of 60kg... Toyota has lost the plot on that one. So I'll just stick to 2023 and older 4Runners. Cheers.
For anyone complaining about Toyota (or other carmakers, for that matter) moving away from V6's and V8's and going to high strung 4-cylinder turbos/hybrids/EV's, direct your frustration where it belongs: the politicians and bureaucrats who push for these stringent regulations regarding emissions and economy.
no sir, that is not true. the 2024 nissan frontier still has a proper v6 with none of these turbo hybrid crap. toyota is just greedy and want both government subsidies and charging customers ridiculous pricing.
High strung? Nope. The 2024 Land Cruiser's 4 cyl can tow 5,000 lbs at 60 MPH up high mountain grades in Colorado doing only 2,300 - 3,000 RPM. Start watching at 27:44 mark th-cam.com/video/Xt8FR5YM5Ws/w-d-xo.html
This is the best review l seen for 250 series Land Cruisers, l been waiting for almost 6 months. Australia is waiting for , but we will receive soon with 2.8 diesel engines same as last 150 model because towing capacity it’s much higher to 3.5 ton. Greetings from Australia.
Great review. If the transmission is the same as the new gen tacoma, there're a lot of issues with tacoma transmission already. In my opinion, there more to dislike about the new land cruiser than to love. I'm not sure about 4 cylinders, turbo charged engine. We see what's going on with the new gen tundra. So I guess we have to wait for a few years to determine the reliability of new gen toyotas.
1990 LC and 4Runner cost similarly. 1990 Land Cruiser 155hp i6 engine: $22k base price = $53k in 2024, Loaded 1990 4Runner with 160hp V6 was $25k or $60k in 2024 dollars.
In a few years, like five or six, yeah, buy one below MSRP if you really want a body on frame SUV with a complex turbo 4 hybrid. Early adopters paying over MSRP are going to be soaked.
When you present the exterior of the car, please, please, turn on the front and rear lights also. It's very important to show it. Thank you. You are great nonetheless!
They didn't. I have the same skid plate on my 24 Tacoma. It takes maybe 90 seconds total to drop that plate. I just changed the oil. It requires removing 4 bolts, loosening another two. Takes about 90 seconds. If that's a "nightmare"... I can't really help you.
G'day from Western Australia. This is the best review of the of the Land Cruiser 250 I have seen by far! And you didn't even include a drive in it! You 'nailed it' with the issue of the ONLY 120 lbs boot load capacity - deal breaker! The floor height being raised by the battery is also a huge constraint. NONE of the other reviews I have seen have raised these critical points! I have a 150 Prado (2.8 diesel) and this (as I'm sure you will know) is the next Prado in Australia. However we will continue with the 2.8 diesel engine for a while. The 2.4 petrol hybrid is eagerly anticipated, however, having seen your review, I think many will conclude the hybrid, as reviewed here, is unsuitable for the off road market in Australia. The 150 Prado (now removed from sale/order) came with 7 seats. For off road use many, like me, remove the 3rd row seats, install draws, and a fridge, and a second battery under the bonnet (hood). I now know I won't be buying the hybrid version 250 Prado (this land cruiser) when available. And I'm thinking the 2.8 diesel is problematic given the smaller fuel tank and range (we currently have a 150 litre/ 39.6 US gallon fuel tank). Huge thanks for your excellent review, and all your other awesome videos too!
'Love this eval. About the "non-gimmicky" aspect, this reminds me of the 2nd Gen. Nissan Xterra, which is the only vehicle that I LOVED from Nissan... of course, this Toyota Land Cruiser is in a different league when it comes to all else! 😃

Great review! This thing is misses the mark on so many level. Other reviewers can’t even come close to your reviews. They’re indirectly getting paid by these companies so they try to make them look better than they are. They’re pretty much like the gaming press at this point.
We are getting the 2.8 diesel in Australia, when it finally arrives here hopefully in September. One of the reasons I am getting one, is the buttons and functionality of the interior layout, and of course everything else. BTW in AU we don't get the 4Runner or the Sequoia, but do get the LC300 which tops out at around $160K AUD.
Great video! Exactly what I needed to know about the new Landcruiser. Needless to say, I am glad I have a 5th gen 4 Runner, which I’ll be keeping. The deal breakers for me were mainly the power train and the hybrid battery. Here we have a vehicle with a very simple interior, yet highly complex multi-system power train.

Sad to see it go when he stopped driving rather than passing it on to one of his sons or the grandkids.

The problem is the car hybrids drive like shit. The truck hybrid is much better because it has a regular transmission with torque converter.
@imnotusingmyrealname4566 and that guy is full of shit anyhow. This is a Landcruiser in name only, imo. I will take the GX 550 offroad trim model. Great review, brother, as always. AMD is the best thing that ever happened to Toyota/Lexus
The GX550 - best off-roader on the 405! The 250 is more suitable for trails than the bloated 200/300.
GX460/LX570 were the last true suvs from Lexus. GX550 is a joke.

I don’t understand why “power” is needed? I’d love this with just a really good 4cyl, no hybrid, no turbo…
I live in fairly affluent area. These rigs will be parked at boutique stores and fancy restaurants. Probably won’t see these on a dirt road for another 10 years or so. The only people who will care about the skid plate or load height will be the ones who buy this LC in 15 years as a used vehicle.
