Regarding the offroad traction mode : Center diff is a Torsen . This kind of diff multiplies the torque by a factor and send it to a wheel with more traction. , but it needs to have a bit traction to multiply it. 0 (zero) multiplied with anything is still 0 (zero). The conclusion if if you have no traction at all it cannot multiply the traction and send it to the other wheels.
It's interesting that they are only giving reviewers the top-spec models. The models most people can afford don't have a diff locker. I'm not sure why Toyota would gate-keep a necessary 4x4 feature and require you to pay nearly $100k for a diff locker. Also, that boot looks like an afterthought. I hope they fix it in a future facelift.
Excellent review. The boot space/config, engine power and traction control system is a huge let down. They could of given it the 165kw from the GR Hilux at least. Look like the value of the outgoing 150's just held a bit longer (just like the 200's with a solid V8).
It has indeed. I bought a brand new 150 series two years ago. The very last one. It is now actually worth more second hand than what I paid for it two years ago.
Hi Paul, I’m still waiting for my GX550 overtrail in the carbonate with black roof hence delay, would you go this or the Altitude? I found the Altitude underpowered but $30k difference is making me think. I suppose the question is, do I keep waiting for my GX?
Well I bought a brand new 150 series two years ago, just before they stopped selling anymore and looking at this I am glad I bought the 150 series as buying this 250 wouldn't give anything different that mine has. As I bought the very last of the 150 series, it has the latest everything and any problems that may have existed would have all been ironed out. Also my 150 series is faster than this as it has the same engine, same power but it is lighter. The new one has less ground clearance than my 150. Two big fails in my opinion. I have customised mine inside and outside. Especially inside, so it looks more like a Mercedes interior now. Mostly all soft materials that came with the car. If I hadnt already had a prado, I may have considered this, but I have no intention of changing my 150 for this 250. To think my 150 series doesnt have all this stupid terrain select but it would have simply pulled out of that with no problem ar all. These terrain control features in new cars are nothing but a useless gimick.
Im happy that he is roasting toyota in a formal way. I've always had toyota but they are just dated and over priced now. The byd shark ute costs 61k drive away...!
The price of this vehicle shows how Australia has now become a country that is priced so only the elite can can enjoy, the property shareholder and Public Servant class, and the rest of us who slave to supply this class with the money to buy vehicles like this.
Despite its shortcomings (ie. so-so engine, and the 3rd-row seat disaster), they will sell a heap of them. Just look at it. Good review of its features.
Luckily here in Japan it doesn't come with that silly useless 48v system so the boot is flat like in my 150 series. While it looks great I still wouldn't trade my 150 series in for this, too much plastic stuck to the outside of the car
The 48V system looks like a complete after thought, sort of like the engineers designed the body, then the interior team finished it off, finally the 48v team turned up late to the party and said, Oh where does our 200Kg of crap go, Um just shove it there in the back. I wonder how long the complicated DFP, AdBlue / diesel will last being switched off every time you come to a stop, I'm sure we will start to see problems with it sooner than later.
The boot was for a much larger battery in the more powerful petrol version the US gets. Toyota Australia are far too conservative to ever go back to petrol, yet cornered themselves into not providing the 300’s V6 for fear of cannibalising 300 sales. Thus we get the tired old 2.8L 48V offering from the Hilux instead. Disappointing and arrogant approach by Toyota leadership here…
What a disappointment. Ill stick with my 2015 Kakadu. Longer range tank, more boot space, easily accessible spare wheel, almost the same performance, less tech to go wrong, no adblue rubbish. No thanks. Yes it lacks the outright performance of an Everest, but even after 9 years and 190k it still drives like near new. No rattles, no squeaks all original bushes, suspension, etc, with just regular servicing. Not sure how well the new Everest will age. Only time will tell.
2009 120, Also have Longer range, bigger boot, close to same performance, lighter, bigger load carrying capacity, no adblue, no DPF and yeah no squeaks and rattles even 16 years later. I test drove the 250 VX....it was disappointing
Love all the haters who have no doubt plonked down their deposit already. The rest of them have walked into a dealership butthurt because they’ll need to wait a year before they can even place an order for one.
The storage hump says "this was going to be IRS" and they changed back at the last minute. The live axle is likely on borrowed time. The third row seat should have been removable like in a minivan, however clasp mechanisms cost more money.
Thanks Paul another great video. I had an expression of interest order on the GXL and had an hour long test drive last week. I thought it drove very well but agree with you the old 2.8 should have had a major update. The interior is very quiet with no noise or rattles but noticed some wind noise I think coming from around the mirrors at about 80 km. However my main gripe is the major flaw with the boot design which could be a deal breaker with the popular GXL, VX and Kakadu models. I hope the designers at Toyota get this sorted out asap! I think the Ford Everest V6 is still safe at the moment but for how long?
In 4H (FT4WD) only it’s in sealed road setting. Select 4H and CDL you then set the computer for off road. Being in this would have let you select the rear diff lock.
@@daweigo6851there’s a reason they only sell diesel , in my opinion they must research what sells and diesel is King in aus in resale and general usefulness
I'm in the market to update my Hilux, I tow a Tandem Pop Top and a boat. With New Prado and Next Gen Hilux in my sights. Before this test l was not happy with the engine allocated to Au for a new Prado, plus always concerned with rear carry space compared to a dual cab when caravaning. This new Prado's carry over Hilux engine is not up to expectation for a new gen release of a heavier vehicle when Ford offer a V6. The GR tuned engine outputs is a minimum, plus the rear cargo floor setup is a total Fail. Third qtr 2026 now for New Gen Hilux is a long stretch plus delivery wait. So, if 2026 Prado lands a Hybrid engine like the 2026 Hilux must have, how much more is Toyota going to be asking. If I jump ship it will be for the V6.
I might add I’ve had 6 Toyota’s, with 2 being Hilux’s, one AWD Kluger and the rest being cars. But this new Prado and it would has been Altitude spec is not on my list anymore.
As someone that has always liked Toyotas, this has been a disappointment for me from the start… first the styling inside and out too American focussed in my opinion, then the colour palette also inside and out too natural. The compromised boot areas and definitely the engine. I was hoping there would have at least been a twin turbo version of the 2.8 that produced 180-200kW and 600Nm. Also a lot of previous technology gone missing in this generation and you’re having to pay over $10k more. I really hope Toyota can rework this new platform to better accommodate electrification as this clearly did not have it in mine
It may share the same chassis as the 300 but its still narrower. Although not as much as previous gen. For some this will be a benfit. As it does fell smaller than a 300 to drive. But that could just be the bonnet and dash. We had been on the waiting list, deposit paid etc. But pulled out after test drive. Loose too much space with 48v setup. 7 seater is a waste of time. It didnt do anything that our HDJ100 does and had less storage. Not that we were selling the 100 anyway.
Great review, I thought this car was going to be awesome, but now for the money it seems underwhelming. I hate the boot! Gees it needs a bigger engine with more power & better fuel economy. I don't know if all those who bought it before driving it, are going to have that oh what a feeling! Again great review, a real eye opener. Cheers

PS also with the battery in the back luggage area you won’t be able to mount a fridge with a bolt in slide in there, even if there was room
Actually that is incorrect. All models have different locks eveb the cheapest model. My 150 series came with different locks as standard.
@@Car-crazy rear diff lock is what he's talking about. centre diff lock doesn't count as. totally different.
The slogan at the back of car window: "Toyota The Smart Choice" Lol
Just pay the extra $$$ and get the GX550...has the correct engine and 4wd system
Research their engines as they are all blowing up with Toyota replacing yes 100 000 of them in the US.
Great to see a towing test if you can.
I like the look of these
I think you just convinced me to go Everest...
It weird Every time you test the door slam on car reviews ads come up
Hi Paul, I’m still waiting for my GX550 overtrail in the carbonate with black roof hence delay, would you go this or the Altitude?
The 150 3rd row was stupid too- that raised section. The 120 had genuine removable 3rd row…. That was a great solution, not sure why they changed.
The drop from the boot is gonna be Toyotas sales for the prado😂
I am a fan of Toyota, looked at the Prado and the Fortuner, decided to go for the Fortuner. This car needs the 3.3 l V6 diesel.
Im happy that he is roasting toyota in a formal way. I've always had toyota but they are just dated and over priced now. The byd shark ute costs 61k drive away...!
2.8 l with elec boost ( mild hybrid ) yeah that's the go !
Yes 11 hp like your lawn mower.
The price of this vehicle shows how Australia has now become a country that is priced so only the elite can can enjoy, the property shareholder and Public Servant class, and the rest of us who slave to supply this class with the money to buy vehicles like this.
Just wait 1 year later then you can buy a decent second hand prado with 20% discounted price.
Thank you for your service, Bruce.
Order placed.
What make you think every common bloke should be entitled to buy a car like this?
Mate if you think it's expensive here look at Ireland's price, €140,000
@@oggyoggy1299 You must be a Public Servant.
Disappointing and arrogant approach by Toyota leadership here…
Why didn't they use the same tune as the Hilux GR Sport with 165kW and 550Nm?
That’s the next upgrade, can’t do it all upfront there would be no-where to go in year 3-4
It’s Apple, sorry Toyota
What a disappointment. Ill stick with my 2015 Kakadu. Longer range tank, more boot space, easily accessible spare wheel, almost the same performance, less tech to go wrong, no adblue rubbish. No thanks. Yes it lacks the outright performance of an Everest, but even after 9 years and 190k it still drives like near new. No rattles, no squeaks all original bushes, suspension, etc, with just regular servicing. Not sure how well the new Everest will age. Only time will tell.
How is your dpf?
@amita1400 So far so good. But I go on regular long drives which helps. It's a touring vehicle and I love it for that. Fits the bill perfectly.
Wait times aren't 12 months long. Spoke to dealer today, seems closer to 4 - 5 months (smell that.......cancelled orders)
@ Go back and ask him to deliver you one guaranteed in that time mate. Good luck.
won't the spare tyre get damaged offroad? Or even snagged?
Seriously about time Toyota gives us Petrol options for the Utes and SUVs, these things get bigger each new gen and the Diesels are slow as snails.
Rear diff lock should be on all models. They should make GR Sport with front diff lock also
The petrol hybrid would sell well in Australia, our obsession with diesel is waning
That iforce max engine in US? Yes please, that will kill diesels for sure
Diesel is for peasants.
Not obsession, it's what the manufacturers offer, if they only offer diesel, then people buy diesel
@@daweigo6851 they used to be around but no one bought them.

Prado has always been under powered & over priced & if Toyota didn't have their nationwide dealerships, they'd be half the price.
FINALLY! ❤❤
Crikey! Would I get this or a 2-Door Jeep Rubicon? Same price for both..
Cheers
However, I love the Prado from the previous generation.
