That's an impressive payload capacity for such a small truck. I like the look. It's very purposeful. A no frills tool.
I've owned 3 Tacomas in the US with this engine. It's slow and brash but my God you can't kill them. I've loaded the bed so heavy that I had trouble steering on the highway lol.
this gave me confidence in my brand new framed 06. 5 speed 4x4. That 278k mile 4 banger is such an engine.
That reminds me of my old hiace with the 2.7 VVTI or whatever it was. I'd have to absolutely rev it to the sheisen to overtake. It was reliable though 😅
This exact model and petrol engine should be available in high ride suspension and 4wd with low range for under $35,000. Many people are sick of diesels and there problems as they age , these engines will give 3-400,000 trouble free mileage . Totally trouble free .
Diesels are far more suited to this sort of application though, far less thirsty and got the torque where you need it unlike in a petrol where you need to rev the tits off it to get the torque
@@sonconmas albeit Toyota have had issues with alot of their diesel engines in the Hilux from around 2002 up until even now, EGR valves, cracked pistons, injectors failing and whatnot....
I agree i would buy a workmate in petrol 4wd straight away , when you work out that the diesel would probably cost around $9000 more which buys alot of fuel
@@sonconmas they optimise these for low end torque, definitely not as much as the diesels but definitely not much worse. I owned one of these 2WD and 1st gear was so torquey, in part due to the manual trans and final drive ratio too but torque and power ratings are fair for the application
I have a 1999 hilux workmate serviced and well looked after its whole life just done 400,000kms and still goes as strong as the day it was built
Toyota needs to stick a 2L turbo petrol and an LSD into these and watch them go out the door
Love the packaging for Toyota's global trucks. The U.S. 2TR-FE based trucks are great, but we don't have ute beds from the factory.

Yes it's really that bad...I owned one and as the engine gets higher km I was lucky to get 14L/100km.
Also loaded with only 300kg the torque is almost non-existant.
You pay for the de-tuned "reliability".
Switched to diesel and never looked back.
Wait until you start towing with it. I had a new MY2010, then a MY2013 model that I used to tow a race car (2000kg). You had to flog it to get any momentum. The fuel consumption was eye watering. Was glad to get rid of the Work mates.

Yeah was going to mention that...small box trailer with bike maybe 500kg really struggled...it does love to rev though.
It's worse actually. I don't know how something so gutless can chew more fuel than my 1996 3.5 mitsubishi V6 which feels twice as powerful on similar weight car

Got myself a 2021 automatic...”yikes” the fuel consumptions around 15 litres per 100km...so only around 400kms per tank of fuel...
Although mine is under load everyday...But it’s a real work beast....
@@fishfacecrab hi since I wrote the comment I haven’t had it on constant towing load so now getting comfortable 600-650kms for a tank load.
Had its first 10’k service and no problems....I still can’t fault the car...as I said it’s a real work beast that’s why you see so many on the road 😎

I recon thats pretty good, would you reccomend it? Thinking of getting 2.7 over diesel, fit a aluminum canopy, and prob 200-300kg of tools. Been reading reviews of it being thirsty on fuel
@Dan Joriel Reyes yes I got a full aluminium canopy around 200kgs plus equipment then the trailer and the 2.7lt petrol pulls/carries the load well that you barely notice it because of the gearing ⚙️ well worth it
its pretty nifty when it wants to be

They proved they didn’t know their consumer for the workmate scrapping the bench seat.
It was a half assed bench seat to be fair it was terrible, full bench with column shift would’ve been better for 3 people
I just find it hilarious that even this ute is cheaper than the cheapest yaris.

Edit: the Yaris is 3000 cheaper but that’s still ridiculous for a yaris
@@VX3800 I think the prices have changed (or I may have been comparing yaris drive away with hilux non drive away). 10 months ago this was different because I remember looking it up too.
But yeah the Yaris, although nice, is WAAAAY over priced.

Got the 10/2020 cab chassis 6 speed sports auto, with 2021 upgrades, and it fly's like a UFO.
I keep seeing that the fuel economy is no good. Have you got any opinions? Apparently people say it’s about 15L per 100kms with minimal to no load.
@@billylc2753 I got it down to 9.6ltr/100 driving it extremely careful, but normal driving is 10ltr/100. 😁 Putting the foot in it, is 11ltr/100.
I have one everything is great but the seats are uncomfortable and the cab is smaller than previous models
Yeah this is a must those 4 cylinders are under powered unless u plan on not going to a road or a highway u have to get some more power out of it maybe I am just hyper sensitized to fast car

Anyone know how these go towing? I tow a horse float max 2000kg loaded but not a fan of diesel.
I used to tow a race car that weighed 2000kg (including car trailer)... it gets the job done, but you have to flog it. Fuel consumption is shocking. Turbo diesel is 100% the way to go. I have a new D-max and you hardly notice you're even towing with all the torque.

I have this in an automatic, and quite frankly it a bucket of shit
there is absolutely no room behind the seat, as mentioned here, 3 load straps and you can’t put the seat right back
performance around town, is good and very drivable
80km and above, things go south quickly, performance is woeful
Travel up to 100km and this changes fine into top gear (6th)
Travel up to 110km (posted speed limit here) and it kicks down to 4th and this is where it stays, until you go down a long decline and it’ll shift up to 5th, rarely 6th
DO NOT ATEMPT TO PASS ANYTHING. It just wont
