  • Core rot is a disease that affects apples and is caused by a variety of fungal pathogens. There are two types of core rot: dry core rot and wet core rot:
    Dry core rot
A slow, corky rot that affects the flesh around the core. It's caused by fungi like Alternaria spp. that colonize flower parts during or after bloom.
    Wet core rot
A more aggressive rot that develops quickly during storage. It's caused by fungi like Penicillium spp., Fusarium spp., Diplodia seriata, and Botrytis cinerea. Wet core rot can occur in the orchard or during fruit dipping in contaminated water.
Here are some ways to manage core rot:
Use fungicides to control core rot
Avoid storing apples that are riper than normal at harvest
Practice good sanitation in the packing house
Add chlorine or sodium o-phenylphenate (SOPP) to the water
Avoid immersing susceptible varieties in water
Tip the bin to drain solution from the fruit cavities after fruit is drenched
Core rot can reduce the nutritional value of apples. It can also cause the fruit to decay and rot, resulting in a loss of essential nutrients.
