Probiotics Benefits + Myths | Improve Gut Health | Doctor Mike

  • This week's episode is all about probiotics benefits and myths. The discovery of the microbiome has started off a huge cascade of new research as well as the launch of some questionable health products. I think that the idea that we are covered inside and out by bacteria, with the majority of it being helpful, is pretty mind-blowing.
    I decided to make this video because I've seen your comments and questions on the subject, usually in the in the form of "how can I improve my gut?" Also, I've noticed that my patients have begun taking these supplements to cure everything from a weight gain, to a weakened immune system to acne.
    As you probably already know I am a healthy skeptic and believe that just because we see some correlations between disease and good bacteria it is not as simple as putting those bacteria into a capsule. I firmly believe in the next 20-30 years we will unlock some fascinating secrets about our gut that will redefine how we think about our health.
    If there’s something that you’re curious about and would like me to explore in a video, please let me know because I take your requests seriously. We’ve got some really great videos coming up in the next
    few weeks so be sure to subscribe to stay up to date! Love you all!

      @@juliemilton9029 It takes a while for your body to get used to probiotic intake. Try Kefir, home fermented pickles, Apple cider vinegar. Those things can provide you with probiotics without needing to take a supplement. But it will take time to get used to them, at first they will make you bloated. Depression and insomnia are not things I experienced. Maybe try meditation to help with your depression and insomnia. Good luck. I can try to help if you have any questions, but I am not a doctor so, maybe seeing a doctor would be of use to you also :)

      @dayumx0x 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@juliemilton9029 hmm, I would definitely talk to your doctor, but just keep in mind the probiotics won't help with losing weight necessarily. I personally started taking it because I was having digestive problems, and it did help a lot with that. Like he said in the video though, it may not work for everyone, it really depends what your issues are. I think I was just lucky a random brand helped for me haha.
      Best advice I can give you is to look at "losing weight" more as getting healthier, getting stronger, doing better for you. It's a better mindset for both your mind and body. Plus, weight doesn't always mean anything. At my heaviest weight, I've been both really out of shape, and later the best shape of my life.

    I started down the Probiotic/prebiotic journey recently along with a change in diet and have some recommendations for others thinking of doing the same.
    Food that have probiotic - Kimchi, Sauerkraut (fermented, make sure it mentions that it has live cultures, making it is also pretty easy), kefir, apple cider vinegar, kombucha, fermented foods (such as fermented pickles, but be careful, most pickles are made with vinegar instead of via fermentation).
    Prebiotic foods:
    Asparagus, Onions, garlic, artichokes, leeks, kiwi, Root veggies such as sweet potatoes, squash wild yams, parsnips.
    My nutritionist recommended having 2-3 servings a day of prebiotic and probiotic food and to try getting both (pre and probiotics) from foods and not supplements.
    If you plan your day/diet out right, you can get a good prebiotic intake going with minimal effort. Try the foods listed above, keep the ones that you like on your diet. Also research! You can find more foods that are in pre/pro biotic food list.
    At first you may get cramps, constipated, etc. But once your body gets used to probiotic intake, you will feel better than you did before (probably, unless there is something about you specifically which does not want the foods you are adding to your diet, see a doctor?).
    One last thing, change your diet! Look up why you should be eating organic food vs non organic. Research the amount of pesticide used in non organic veggies and what you are putting into your body when you eat things sprayed with pesticides freely. Drink more water (16 cups a day!). and look into intermittent fasting. If you can add all of these things to your routine, I think you will see great improvement as did I. I lost 10 pounds in the last month and feel much better (not that I was feeling bad to begin with). Good luck! Comment if you have any questions.
    I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice, just sharing my experience and advice I would give a friend trying to start a probiotic regiment.

I started all the about including exercise and IF and have only lost 3lbs in a week. Sustainability of a diet is important over following an Optimal diet. You lost weight with intermittent fasting because you created a CALORIC DEFICIT. Someone on keto will lose weight because they've RESTRICTED a complete food group, again creating a CALORIC DEFICIT.
      On the other hand, prebiotic/probiotics which you've mentioned are on point and should be included in one's diet.

    Several years ago, I was having horrible stomach pain, to the point that I couldn't eat without doubling over in extreme pain for weeks. I went to the doctor and they did some tests and everything looked fine, and they said there was nothing they could do. I was about to try eliminating foods, but before I started I realized that a couple weeks before the pain started, I had finished a round of antibiotics. I got some probiotics and started taking them. Within 36 hours I was feeling back to normal. From then on, every time a member of my family has taken antibiotics, we have followed it up with a round of probiotics because I never want to go through that again.

      That is good but how do you know that you need probiotics? what strains? and how can you have a long lasting results?
      I personally had IBS and other symptoms and here is exactly what I did:
      1- fixed my diet, so that i know what healthy foods are. believe it or not, it is a big part of the solution. not sure what diet you follow but the less the processed food, the better your health will be.
      2- you will hear a lot about taking supplements but after trying dozens, it is best when it is personalized to your needs. so you need to test and see what your body needs.
      I suggest you work with a Dietitian or find a legit course that teaches healthy living to go about this.

      Adding Collagen Peptides to my morning coffee + taking a liquid Vitamin C supplement + eating large Salads on an Empty stomach with only Cottage Cheese as source of Protein helped me tremendously after having the worst Constipation the last year. I basically eat my meats and veggies separately. They seem to digest better separately than eating them together. So no chicken breast or Salmon on my salads for example. No steamed broccoli eaten with meats. I eat meats by themselves or with some fruits. But I don't eat hard to digest veggies with meats together.

    interesting concept. The mind manifests stress through body symptoms (gut issues, breathing issues, chest tightness, fainting) . This is what psychologists call a somatic response to a stressor. In terms of gut issues, I wonder if controlling what we eat and drink helps as a coping mechanism to regulate our stress levels. I am skeptical that the gut itself can cure anxiety and depression. However, awareness of body-mind connection and mindfulness of the foods we eat seems to be effective in helping stress induced gut issues. Like the 4th article provided in the description explains, the gut-brain axis relationship is bi-directional! Great video, it really sparked my interest.

    Hi Dr Mike,
    When I was about 8 or 9 years old, I used to always get these random episodes of intense nausea/pain that would last for about an hour and then just disappear on their own. I also had some recurring eczema on my arms that wouldn’t go away. The nausea was causing me to miss school and for over a year, I went to heaps of doctors who couldn’t explain what was causing this, and who only seemed to focus on treating the symptoms with medications,etc.
    Finally, I found a really good GP who had extensive knowledge of the gut. He put me on a diet of no refined sugars, wheat, dairy or excess carbs to clear out candida, yeasts and bad bacteria in general. Within a week, all my eczema was gone and the episodes of feeling sick never came back. I wish more doctors understood the huge role our gut obviously plays in our overall health, like you and my doctor do :)

    Despite not knowing which one pops out first, chicken or egg, I agree we should take care of what we eat, in terms of diet, balance diet depends on your body.
    Plus, also I want to add that we should take care of our mind too. Be compassionate with yourself in amidst the inevitable difficulties in life. And for people who accept therapy, huge hug and applause to you too (as I see you started therapy too, Dr. Mikhail).

      Hi! I left this comment earlier but avoid FODMAP's and try VSL3. Here is the comment I made earlier:
      as a microbiologist who focuses on the microbiome, just a note that beans/legumes are horrible for the microbiome. They have defense proteins as a function of the plant that makes their protein indigestible, and the mucinolytic and proteolytic bacteria binge eat them, and as a side effect of breaking down all that protein, destroy the gut lining as well- causing an array of problems. SECOND, kombucha is a horrible joke, it has yeast, which people with crohns disease are known to have antibodies to yeast as a biomarker. THIRD, store-bought yogurt does more harm than help because of all the emulsifiers they put in it that emulsify your gut lining as well. Homemade yogurt that is fermented enough so there's no dairy is great and delicious :) FOURTH I totally agree with Dr. Mike that if you are healthy, there is no need to take probiotics, just make healthy eating habits. BUT if you do have problems with indigestion, bloating, or any of the diseases Dr. Mike listed, VSL3, which you can buy at bartells, is one of the few probiotics that has research that shows it has a positive impact. Also avoid foods high in FODMAP's, google that term if you want to know which foods that is.
      Thanks Dr. Mike for your informative channel :)

    A few years back I began to have these strange symptoms. I felt nauseous constantly, lost my appetite, was always lethargic, and had this strange bloat that was mostly in the upper abdomen area. The doctors blamed it on my IBS and I'd been prescribed antibiotics which did very little to help.
    Well one night I'm scrolling and see an ad for probiotics and in my desperation I ordered a pack (after a thorough review). Days later the bloat had all but vanished, my energy and appetite returned, and things felt back to normal.
    There have been moments where I've stopped taking them only to have everything thrown out of whack again, so the probiotics definitely work. I'm currently doing the FODMAP diet--a fantastic diet for those suffering from IBS

    I've always have a hard time going to toilets since I was a child. Never got diagnosed because my parents thought it's just a normal thing even tho they go to toilet everyday.
    It gotten worse as I grow older. Every time I go on a holiday, I can never visit the toilet. My mom even gave me pills that make me go to the toilet because my stomach was bloating. I've recently discovered probiotics and i instantly could go to the toilet. It's great! My stomach doesn't bloat every time I eat( esp cuz I love rice and noodles a lot). I don't eat them everyday tho, maybe like 3 times a week just to keep my gut going.
    Also!!! Foods that make me go to toilet are kimchi and zucchini!! I noticed after eating them I could go hehe

    • @giuliarose6109
      @giuliarose6109 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      TheJawi the easiest way would be to relieve excess skin surgery because extra skin isn’t something like fat that you exercise away but I’m sure that if you google it and look on web md of a website with valuable credentials of an actual doctor then you’ll find something

      Loose skin after dramatic weightloss is caused by too rapid weight loss. You can't avoid it but you can reduce it quite dramatically by losing weight slowly and letting your skin adapt to it and of course some people have better skin then others and will have reduced amounts. Of course nobody want to use years to lose their weight so the only option you have then is operation.

      Plastic surgery

    • @nadiariggs5110
      @nadiariggs5110 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      If it’s just slightly loose, hanging out after recent weight loss, your best bet is to keep exercising and drink tons of water. It took some time to stretch that skin out, right? It takes a similar amount of time for the skin to rebound. If the amount of loose skin is significant and painful, see a plastic surgeon- they usually have both non-surgical and surgical options. Congratulations on your weight loss(if you wanted to lose it!).

    • @Wheniwasyoung15
      @Wheniwasyoung15 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Weight based exercises will help if the excess skin is not major, if it is major I think the only option is plastic surgery but I’d try weights first

    Great info!....I think the challenge of not over-using antibiotics is that, at least in my experience, they seemed to be prescribed even when the doctor doesn't know if its bacterial. So how should I as a non-medical professional be able to determine if I am "over-using" antibiotics? Another question - I use probiotics when taking antibiotics and maybe a day or so after. I find that helpful in reducing GI side effects from antibiotics. Is that okay to do? You mentioned using it for diarrhea cause by antibiotics but not always when taking them.

    I’ve struggled with irregular bowel movement my whole life. I tried to up my fiber intake, fixed my sleep schedule, stopped eating foods that clog you up as often. That didn’t work. I would try to take laxatives and even that barely helped. It was to a point that I was hospitalized because I couldn’t go in a week and I was in pain. I was told to take the senna laxative but even that barely worked.
    My doctor suggested probiotics instead and i have noticed it has been helping me so much. Thankfully I found something that helped me.

It’s crazy, but not surprising, that our gut health and nutrition can impact our mood and mental health. I can’t find the links to the reading you recommended. I would love to see the research on that link between gut health and mental health. Where can I find those links. Thanks so much!

    I’m an esthetician’s and I tell my clients to ease up on the face washing if they have acne. There’s a balance of good and bad bacteria on the face. Bad acne means there’s an overrun of the bad. Usually, when I tell them to use a gentle soap and to just put a dot of neosporin on big pimples, their skin shows vast improvement. So interesting!
