    Taking great photos, like many professions and hobbies is influenced primarily by the operator's skill and experience. However, I believe gear matters. Your gear should never hold your creativity or performance back and in order to achieve a certain "look" you need quality gear. My goal with videos like this is to simplify the decision making process for anyone in the market for these products.
    Let me know if this video was helpful, if you have any suggestions for future videos, or disagree with my conclusions.

    I've just bought a mint, used Mkii with only 34,000 actuations, to replace my beloved IDXMki. The fact it's almost identical to the Mki is a definite plus. I bought an R6, and then an R3 some time ago, but was massively dissapointed with their autofocus, which was inconsistent. I take mostly motorsport photos, and one week at a track, the R3 would perform well, with a hit rate of 80%+. The next week, at the same track, with similar cars, sometimes the same corners, and similar light, the hit rate struggled to get much above 50%. And this with the same settings as the previous week. I've since sold the R3, but kept the R6. When I switched back to the 1DX, what a difference! Hit rate 80%+, no matter the conditions or light. And, like you, I like the heft and robustness of the IDX range. They really are built like tanks! Oh, and 20mp is plenty. I recently sold a print (approx 6ft x 2.5ft), from my 1DX, and it was still tack sharp, and great detail, even at that size.

      @@malayneum I used the Mk2 for the first time, yesterday, at a car rally and, to my eyes anyway, the colours seem more natural and accurate with the Mk2, especially grass.

    On my 1Dx, I’ve custom changed the ‘set’ button on the rear dial to change the ISO. So it’s as simple as pressing the set button and scrolling the dial to alter the ISO. It’s a nice feature to have and well worth doing.

I'd rather use a dependable camera that gets the job done even if its lacking 1% image quality compared to another camera that is a PITA to use lol

    Good overview, thanks. I used all four of the original APS-H 1D bodies as well as the full-frame "s" versions, but left the series with the arrival of the 5D Mark IV. I have a little M50 mirrorless for person snapshots, and it convinced me that I want to stick with DSLRs. The pandemic destroyed my photography business, so I only shoot for personal use now. I always liked the big form of the 1D series (I shot 6x7 film for fun way back), and prices on these 1DXII bodies are becoming more realistic. I think when the 1R arrives, I'll check the 1DXII out. Thanks again.

      New 1DX II's are now $2999 at B&H. Used ones in excellent or excellent plus condition at KEH are in the $2100-$2300 neighborhood. I just bought a used 1DX in "bargain" condition from KEH for under $700 including sales tax; that's about 10% of what a new one cost 10 years ago. It will be strictly a bird and wildlife lens for me as I use a 5D4 for hiking and landscapes with a 5D3 as a backup. I had a 1DX, bought new in 2013 or 2014, that was deemed unrepairable in 2019 due to internal corrosion from moisture, and I wasn't shooting enough birds and wildlife to justify another pro body camera so I replaced it with the 5D4. Now I'm adding back a 1DX for a price that I would have happily paid to repair the one I had if it had been repairable. I thought hard about the 1DX II, but the improvements versus the 1DX just aren't enough for me to justify paying 3-4X as much for occasional use. The autofocus and image quality from the 1DX I had were fantastic, and I still have an L bracket, a charger and 2 batteries for the used one I'm getting. My biggest concern about the 1DX is how long parts for it will be available so I can get it serviced. It was new in 2012, and hopefully I can get it serviced if necessary for at least the next 5 years or so.

    Great Video, especially me being a year late but with the1DX MKII which just arrived today sitting in front of me as I follow along with your tour of features and enjoying your commentary I'm more than excited to take it out into the field and see what it can do. It arrived from MPB in with all it's original packaging, Canon battery and charger, looks brand new without a mark on it and with a shutter count of only 6,168. Total price was $1585.00, I think I did alright. Thanks again, Cheers my Friend . . .

    hi there ! Recently I have sold my a7r3 sony and bought this beast for my candid video projects...its amazing,its wonderful,people questioned me a lot,that why you've taken this 6YRS OLD CAMERA ?my answer was very simple,It shoots 4K 60 fps,FHD 100FPS what else a candid Videographer need out of it and it got touch focus system and in post production i can increase my 4k footage to 100 or 120 fps,And most important it is weather sealed camera and if we talk about budget,then Ef lenses are quiet cheaper than RF Lenses and Sony Lenses.When u hold this 1dx and shoot it feels like professional,compare to mirrorless camera.and color science of Canon is always great compare to Sony.6yrs ago 1dx mark ii has launched 4k 60fps,and now from last 2 yrs you could see sony and other mirrorless are releasing 4K 60 and 120 Fps,Just think how advance is Canon Technology.Believe me its a beast, Let any other camera come in the market,this is Number One and it will remain Number One....Am proud to be a 1DXmarkii user in 2023...

    That's a fair and honest real life user review. Thanks for sharing.
    The fact that you bought yours used is perfectly fine. But it amazes me, that first buyers don't let the charger and all smaller parts go with the camera. Canon is NOT good at supplying parts for second hand users.

    This was a great video and I just wanted to say that I ditched my Sony A7iii Mirrorless camera and I'm deciding between the Canon 1dx Mark ii or the Canon 5d mark iv. I hated mirrorless for so many reasons but mainly it was just so gimmicky, and endless, ridiculous menus. Between the the two canons it's a tough choice. I think the 1dxii is a clear winner for low light and speed, but the 5dmiv has Wi-Fi which is the one and only thing I'll miss about my Sony.

    • @davidsantiago2451
      @davidsantiago2451  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My friend let me try his A7III and I was pretty disappointed by it. The image quality is good but that's it, which is fine for casual use, but not something I would depend on or want to use long term. I think mirrorless cameras will get to a point where the tech, particularly the viewfinder resolution and refresh rate, improves and they become the obvious choice. However, the tech isn't there yet based on the cameras I've tried. I would say the 1DXII is better unless you absolutely need the extra megapixel. I haven't really run into any situation yet where I feel I need more performance other than some extra resolution for heavy crops.

    I thought that was a great video. I do agree with you on the mirrorless….There’s a lot of great things about the “latest and greatest”, but it’s not established yet..irs a ton of $$ in my opinion which will more than likely be out run in 5 years, where as the 1dx goes back to the basics… the basics have been established for years..the 5d mark it is definitely a great camera in fact the 5d mark ii is still great..the problems I have with the 5d is that it is too slow, the 1dx I will buy later this. month, I think it’s a great camera …I just walked around with my child for 7hrs at the zoo, took 1568 shots with the 5d iv, I can imagine what the 1dx is going to do…thanks for the review again

  • @ActualCounterfactual
    @ActualCounterfactual 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hey, so I ended up on this video again, its one of the better ones for this model. I have not bought my 1DXii yet, but I have a job in a couple of month's time that I will get this model for. The prices are now crazy good as well, one can get a 1DXii second hand in Europe (good condition) for just over 1000 Eur, so yet another reason why I will NOT go mirrorless any time sone, its just throwing money down the pit 😅

  • @blisteringbooks2428
    @blisteringbooks2428 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know if the sensors on the 1D cameras are better. As I had been a pro Canon user for 25 years I started digital with the Kodak DCS5 [utter crap] then the DCS520. That had a 2mp sensor but was phenomenal, I used a 1D and 1DS for years before realising that the technology had improved and went to the 5D3 and 5D4. By that time digital had seriously eroded my business or I would have gone for the 1Dxii. It is very hard to justify serious expenditure when you are competing against amateurs who give their images away for free. Being a pro motorsport photographer I was losing the advantage of putting my life in danger as health and safety after a serious, 4 deaths, incident in Scotland was frightening the motorsport community so less powerful images you could download from Facebook, high res no cost, were often popular with potential customers. However, as I now do a lot of wildlife I have an R5, flip screen, Animal Eye AF, though I am still tempted by the 1Dxii!

  • @joshdiditt

    Im thinking about getting one of these used for $2500 or a R7 with Speedbooster. I will use it for 50/50 photo and video. I never used a DSLR, only mirrorless. Is it hard to learn to take pics on a DSLR since you can't see the exposure changes?

    • @davidsantiago2451
      @davidsantiago2451  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't think it's difficult to learn. You just use the built-in light meter to adjust the exposure, which really only applies if you shoot in manual mode. In aperture or shutter priority the camera sorts it out, so it's effectively the same. Yea, you can still get a preview with a mirrorless camera in those modes, but you can always just check the LCD/histogram if you want to visually confirm the exposure on a DSLR.
      If you're doing that much video though it might be worth having the in-body stabilization (IBIS) of the newer cameras. Although I didn't like the R5 I tried for photos, the IBIS was impressive when hand-holding for video. If you're using a gimbal then the weight and bulk of the 1DX might be an issue. I used one on a gimbal for a shoot and didn't have any issues, but it's a PITA to balance and because the battery grip takes up a lot of space and might hinder the movement of the gimbal.

    I bought my 1DXMKII in 2020 right before the height of pandemic. I was worried that I bought an older camera and also, I mainly wanted to shoot videos. I thought this was the camera to buy for shooting videos, and not realizing it was more for photos. It really helped me learn how to shoot photos and now I shoot event photos pretty decent, and I'm getting into real estate photography too! I would have never discovered that I have another skill (photos) if I didn't get the 1DXMKII. Do you think I made the right choice?

    19:05 I don't think it is "marketting"; just that the sensor capability (electronic read-out speed) had already at that time, exeeded the mechanical capability (how fast mirror and shutter can work), allowing faster fps in liveview than with OVF... This is probably useless in a dslr as you said, but it is something that is really usefull for mirrorless, because they basically are always shooting in liveview
    Great in depth-review :)

    • @davidsantiago2451
      @davidsantiago2451  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I suppose I could have been more specific that when in live view and shooting 16 fps the rear screen basically blacks out and you cant see anything, so it's basically useless in that regard. Also, if I was just to spray and pray at an odd angle I would just eyeball it instead of using the LCD in live view.
      Mirrorless cameras still have a shutter, but no mirror. Some can shoot in full electronic mode without the shutter, but I don't think the tech is quite there yet. I was excited about the R3 having no blackout in full electronic mode, but from what I read at the time (maybe they will update the firmware) in full 30 fps you lose exposure metering and auto focus. Call me cynical, but that's not a fully capable shooting mode imo. I also tried a Sony A7 III and both the hybrid shutter and full electronic shutter mode can lead to some odd visual artifacts. I hope they figure it out though because slow panning with no blackout would be fantastic.

    Hey, I do not shoot video what so ever, only 100% stills, and some say the 1dx and 1dxii are roughtly the same for stills in quality, what is your personal opinion?
    IF there is minimal quality + handling differences, then I can (almost) get 2x 1DX bodies for the same price as a 1DXii body in some places.

    • @davidsantiago2451
      @davidsantiago2451  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never used a MkI, but I could see that being the case since it's also basically true when comparing the MkII and MkIII. I would say it depends on what you are doing with it. If you are buying them to use a lot then I would say get the best and newest camera you can afford because it will generally be in better shape just because it's not as old, more than likely can still find spare parts or have CPS work on it, etc. I would have gotten a MKIII if I could have afforded it since it theoretically would have a longer service life and be supported longer, plus there are some small, but extremely useful upgrades like the finger tip sensor that replaces the little joystick to move the focus points. Looks like the "Mk1" only takes CF cards so that might be a factor too depending on your workflow. Basically if the quality of test shots you've seen is comparable then the real difference is quality of life upgrades that don't look important on paper, but make a big difference in the moment taking pictures.

    Would you buy a Canon 1DX Mk II today (Sep.2022)?

    • @davidsantiago2451
      @davidsantiago2451  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Definitely. For me it's a good value proposition considering I'm not willing to go mirrorless until EVFs get a little better and manufacturers focus less on "features" and just build a solid camera. In 5 years it might be a different story, but I've personally been disappointed in the latest Canon offerings. I got to use an R5 for a bit with RF glass and the images were ok, but almost felt like they had a crop sensor "feel". I still preferred the look of my 1DX or even a 6D MkII I was able to compare it with at the time. So, I see it as why spend 5K plus and have to switch to a new lens mount if I don't even like the images, disregarding the OVF vs EVF issue. The 1DX MkIII is also so similar to the MkII that I don't feel disadvantaged by the MkII, which is much cheaper.

    As a professional wire service sports photographer, the RJ-45 is most often used to connect the camera to an FTP site for live transmission of images to remote editors (wired LAN mode). I've used this many, many times when covering marquee events where your position is fixed, and the venue or league drops an ethernet line near the shooting positions, like World Series, NCAA Final Four, Super Bowls, etc..
    There was a post season baseball game when I was so in sync with my remote editor that I had photos of a player who hit a home run uploaded, captioned and posted on the wire's client site before the player had even completed running the bases. A wired Ethernet connection remains much quicker and more reliable than WiFi, especially in a crowded stadium.
