One difference I hadn't heard about that I've found to be excellent - the "quick release shutter" on the 1DX3. I don't have the exact figure here, but the 1Dx2 and standard shutter release speed on the 1DX3 speed is like 1/5 of a second. But with the quick release shutter setting, the shutter releases 2x as fast. So as a photographer if you don't have a shutter release, it releases sooo quickly, you don't have to worry about long lens vibration blur from removing your finger from the shutter button. I was floored by the difference. Using the new AF-On smart controller (set to always on, so I don't have to press any buttons first to turn it on) has been like night and day going back to the 1Dx2 For me the overall difference in the files has not been small for me. The sharpness of the images, especially from the 400 2.8 v3 is downright stunning. My biggest disappointments so far is software related: 1. I was sooooooo excited about the canon log in the 1DX3, but other than "viewing it" and making slight adjustments in DPP canon has no solution to output these files to an MOV or MP4 package. The free version of Divinci supports the RAW FILES. However, the free version doesn't support H.265 files. You MUST purchase the DiVinci Resolve Studio package to be able to work with CLog files. 2. Additionally, Lightroom 16 (adobe's last standalone edition before they moved to pay system cannot be upgraded to read the new Canon Raw files. The only solution (beside getting caught in the monthly pay system) was to install adobe raw converter (which is free) which is used to convert them to DNG FILES to edit. Once converted they work perfectly well. 3. Pocketwizard Software does NOT work with the 1DX3 - PW has no canon solution for the 1DX3 in relation to ETTL shooting. (Standard Channels work as usual.) It was definitely worth the upgrade from me. It feels future ready in ways the 1Dx2 doesn't.
Great perspective Mike! It seems you have been able to dive in deeper with the photography aspects than I have which is awesome. With regards to editing the 10 bit canon log h.265 footage, it is available to edit straight away in premiere. You will likely have to build proxies though. Also, I believe you can edit in the newest version of Davinci resolve as well. The raw photos worked perfectly in my Lightroom software. Perhaps check and see if you have the latest version, as it may not be compatible with older versions.
Griffin Conway thanks for the direction , Griffin! Didn't think about that w Lightroom. I'll dive into that this weekend. I'm using DiV Resovle 16. I was able to load and edit the raw files, but importing any canon log file resulted in the file importing. But only audio was present in the file. The video was just a thin green line through the middle of every file. I wondered if Divinci was just not recognizing the codec...or if I needed to download something, but hours later, after reinstalling Divinci , still same result. Knowing now from your experience it should work fine, I'll get back at it this week end. Thanks for the confirmation.
Thanks William! Yes I have done some "real world" testing. I have shot a few interviews in IPB and I have shot a lot in ALL I as well. It's not a world of difference in quality...the biggest difference is when there is a lot of motion in the scene because IPB sort of "guesses" what will be in between some of the frames to save on file size, whereas ALL i records each individual frame. So you may see some motion artifacts in IPB, however, in an interview setting with minimal motion you might not notice the difference.
Thanks Warren! Also apologies for calling you William in my last comment, I think I was typing quickly and it auto corrected your name! 🤭 hope to catch you in the next one!
Thank you so much for very detailed comparison. A question about external output through HDMI, what are the options for external output to external recorder and can you record 5.5k raw externally?
Thanks for checking out the video! Hdmi options are 4K up to 60p. There is now raw output through the hdmi. I believe it will output the 4K signal even when recording 5.5k raw internal as well
HI!, hope you find some time to answer me, I'm a hobbyist photographer with over 20 years experience in film-shooting and recently got into digital (I know a bit late..;), I never needed fast AF so got myself a 5D II, which I love. But lately I'm getting into wedding photography with crazy dancing in almost dark (where the AF stops working, and manual focus is useless on a modern camera), Music & dance events, and some sports too. Now, I could get the MKIII for $4K or the MKII for less than $2K... So do you feel it's worth the price difference? I'm getting more into wedding and event photography with fast moving dancers and erratic moving kids. So I need fast, reliable and accurate auto-focus, good high-ISO and fast (and comfortable, since video is new to me) hybrid shooting (clients want some video these days..). RF is not an option, since I want an Optical Viewfinder and don't care lying on the floor to get the shot. So the question is, how much is the AF, ISO and IQ going to be better, and how much better and faster my workflow would be in order to justify the double price tag. Also the smart controller seems really interesting and double the battery life, but for double the price?
@@GriffinConway I have the regular version of Resolve I got with the BMPCC4K. I heard a rumor the latest beta version of Pr has 1DXMK3 support in it. I don't have the stones to run beta software on my regular office rig, but will be watching for it. Cheers on the great vid. Hope to run into you some time in the OC.
Ya it works pretty well. As with any external recorders, it is not a perfect flawless solution. Sometimes you will have a few small things that are annoying but overall I still use my ninja v a lot with the 1dx iii
Hey Griffin great video! What monitor would you suggest me to buy for my 1dx mark iii so that I can use false color when I’m shooting raw. Do you think that the small hd focus 7 would work?
Get the Ninja V, and you can get false colours and waveform, as well as record in Prores, so you are not dealing with H265 files. That is what I am doing with my 1DXIII
I’m watching this again 😳🤦♂️ why ? Because it’s a great comparison video and I’m still thinking of getting a 1dxmkii for myself. Either birthday or Christmas. I’m thinking around Christmas there may be some deals! Currently using an EOS R and I’m completely happy with it. But would like to leave it in the studio and get the 1dxmkii for strictly for photography work ! Again thanks for the great video.
Great review. Have you (or anyone else reading this) used the 1DX Mark III with an Atomos Ninja recorder? I can't get mine to work at frame rates above 30p. I know I can't record RAW externally, but I'm having the issue with the non-RAW codecs. Thanks!
Hi Paul, yes I use my ninja V recorder with it all the time. I had an issue at first with it and it turned out to be a cable issue. Consider checking out the one I linked in the description. Once I purchased that one it worked great for me.
@@EricCheung Hi Eric, I've tried four different cables for which I don't see obvious brand names. All four work fine up to 30p but I can't seem to get a signal when I switch to 60p. I have a couple of other cables on order, but deliveries in my part of the world are sketchy at the moment with everything going on.
Very nice work, very fair comparison between and talking about the things that matter. I bought stupid wifi dongle for 1dx2, biggest rip off ever and not being compatible with 1dx3 kills me if you need wifi AC. Definitely would like to more about the impacts of workflow time with all these codecs, something overlooked especially with the costs of computer upgrades.
Thanks a lot Adam. In terms of workflow, I typically shoot canon log in the 10 but 422. Premiere just had a big update to allow for better processing of h.265 codecs like what the 1dx 3 has, but it’s only for pc and I’m using Mac. I just build proxies when I want to edit the footage. Might take an hour or two depending on how much footage I shot but it’s not that big of an impact. If you are shooting content that needs to be turned around ASAP you can always switch it out of log mode and in to a standard or neutral profile and it will be h.264 and edit pretty much the same as the 1dx Mark ii footage. And ya the WiFi dongle was such an overpriced item!
I thought this camera had autofocus on slow motion. And I thought that it had autofocus in 60 frames per second but not face detect autofocus. I could be wrong, but that would be weird if they didn't have autofocus in full frame 60 frames. I trust you know what you're talking about, but I was wondering if I misunderstood or if the other reviews I saw were wrong about it.
Thanks for the comment. It does have amazing autofocus in all modes, including full frame 120p. I can confirm in full frame 60p it does not have autofocus. If you shoot in the 10 bit 422 and drop down to a 1.3 crop it will have autofocus at 4K 60p though so that is a good option
Natural Gallant Bodybuilding I think you might be slightly mixed up. The 5d Mark iv doesn’t have 4K 60p. It has a really solid 1080 60p though with great autofocus. The 1dx 3 has autofocus in full frame 60p in 1080 mode just like the 5d Mark iv, but it also has a lot of other modes that are quite a big step up from that as well.
Griffin Conway my apologies. I've worked extensively with the mark 4 but didn't use the 4K often because of the file size. I'm now on the c200 with blog format stuff done on the 5d. It is also important to note that the mark4 crops in 4K automatically. Thanks for the info and let me know if you ever want to collaborate. :)
Thanks for sharing, great work! I cancled my 1Dx III order with the R5 announcement, but both will have their flaws. The IBIS and the size of the R5 got me, but I don't need 8K. On the other side the 5.5K is more realistic to work with and your demos of the electronic IS are really good. My dream (Canon) camera has the size of the R5, maybe even a little bigger, has 6K RAW 60p with AF, 4K 120 with sound and AF and maybe 1080p with 240p... You think the 120p on the 1Dx III has a better image quality as the 1Dx II? Beside the 10 Bit? The IQ on the 1Dx II is really soft if things are more far away. Thanks!
Thanks Stefan! That would be a great camera. The 120p image is a lot better on the 1dx 3, you just want to make sure to have plenty of light to avoid noise in the shadows. I use the 120p a lot.
I was thinking it would, and I was also thinking at the time I made this that since raw is a direct readout of the sensor it would only be available in 8k raw which means pretty unmanageable file sizes. Also I figured the battery was a little too small for long recording times
fantastic quick run down. Im excited about the video improvements and its potential for travel photography amongst other things. Am i correct the talking head was not 12 bit? excellent job as usual.
Thank you very much Mike! The talking head portion was shot on the c500 Mark ii in 10 bit XF-AVC. It was my first talking head portion using that camera so I am still tweaking things to get colors where I want them. Nice thing is file size is about 1/10th the size of the c200 raw though.
Thanks for the video. However I would love it if more reviews included wildlife, bird photography and sports autofocus action. These are the uses that most will use this camera for in my opinion. Would have loved to see these differences between the cameras in the capacities for which they were designed. Instead, it’s always about the filmmaking.
Hey Gary, thanks for checking out the video and for commenting. I totally agree that wildlife and sports are what a lot of people will use the 1dx series cameras for. I always try to be as authentic as I can with my reviews, and only review from my own perspective. I used to shoot a lot of sports in the past but I rarely shoot photos for sports now. I also don’t photograph wildlife usually, but I have a ton of respect for the talented photographers that are skilled in these areas. So since I’m not one who is working in those fields often, it felt out of place for me to cover those things.
Griffin Conway thanks for the response. I think it’s great that you are approaching the review from your own perspective. I think my comment is just a trend I’m seeing in most of the 1DX III reviews. More of a general critique for all the reviews, not critical of yours specifically. I do a ton of bird photography and right now I’m tracking woodpeckers bursting out of their nesting holes after feeding their chicks. Locking focus on a tiny bird is tough in most cases. If it’s a larger bird flying left to right or even towards you it’s not too tough for my 1Dx first version. I was curious to see if the Mark III could lock into the small bird and keep focus. I spoke to a popular website canon reviewer and he thinks the new camera would struggle with these little birds also. Right now I can get the shot by pre focusing on an area in front of the nest. So the bird flies out and moves through the focal plane. I do get the shot, but man it would be great if the camera could track the bird automatically. I’m probably still going to buy the new camera someday soon, just waiting for it to come down. Thanks again man and I wish you the best with your channel!
Griffin, how is your content free?! It's great 😊. Glad you went with a "like for like" comparison video. Your video on the 1DX3 vs the cinema camera (2 mo ago) is equally awesome, and shows that in order to make a reasonably interesting comparison, the comparison has to be "rigged" so to speak with a $15+K cine camera just to make the footage "fair". An amazing testimony. Wished you got the commission from my investment in the 1DX3, because your video made the difference. Unbiased. Genuine.
Man, I’m so interested in seeing that 1dxiii vs c300iii video. I’m probably in the minority here but I’m actually more interested in those two cameras than I am the r5. I have my reasons 😂
Yeah man, most definitely! I’m most interested in seeing how that dual gain output performs. I mean, I’m the 1dxiii is no slouch obviously in the dynamic range performs close to or identical to the c500ii but I’m interested in seeing if that dual gain output will squeeze a little more out. I’ve been a c200 shooter for about 2 years and considering the upgrade to the c300mkiii for my A cam so that’s the context I’m looking at that camera with. I don’t get too caught up in the spec war, but I’m such a sucker for the most dynamic range possible haha.
much have you tested these two cameras? I would love to see you results if you have. I can guarantee the settings were exactly the same in my test, as I record with my phone bts while I do it. The results surprised me as well.
Imagine not knowing about AI Servo mode in the 1DX2. Of course you can capture multiple frames in focus in photo mode, What on earth are you talking about? How do you think sports photographers use it?
This review was not helpful... for my wallet. I love this review, because contrarily to most of the 1DX3 reviews out there, you have put focus on the real improvements of the mark 3. I did not know that there was a silent mode on this version, and nearly every review on youtube would instead praise the R5 (or other mirrorless) for having that. I'm not a professional photographer, but I love photography, and back in the days when I did not have enough money or no money at all (yeah, there were such days), I could not afford a good camera. This pushed me to always strive to get the best gear. I now own a second-hand 1DX2 and a 5D4. Well, the 1DX2 is a beast, compared to the 5D4. But the IDX2 misses those small improvements like a full touchscreen or WIFI etc. And when you get used to the touchscreen on the 5D4 and you have to press the buttons on the 1DX2, it's a big step backwards. The price is too high though...
EOS R5 looks like a beast for sure when it actually does get fully released and shipped. As for now, there are plenty of working professionals getting plenty of use with the 1dx mark iii.
Griffin, you are making it very difficult for me to wait for the r5.... thanks for sharing

Using the new AF-On smart controller (set to always on, so I don't have to press any buttons first to turn it on) has been like night and day going back to the 1Dx2
For me the overall difference in the files has not been small for me. The sharpness of the images, especially from the 400 2.8 v3 is downright stunning.
My biggest disappointments so far is software related:
(Standard Channels work as usual.)
It was definitely worth the upgrade from me.
Dude your vids are f’n AWESOME
Thanks so much Jesse! Glad you enjoy them!
Why didnt you use face tracking on 1dx? My 6d mark II perfectly keep the tracking.
Could you do a video comparing the C500 MkII and the C300 MkIII?
Definitely! I have one planned soon as I get a c300 iii for testing.
Griffin Conway Awesome!
Great review. Have you done any testing to see the difference between ALL-I and IPB?
Thanks William! Yes I have done some "real world" testing. I have shot a few interviews in IPB and I have shot a lot in ALL I as well. It's not a world of difference in quality...the biggest difference is when there is a lot of motion in the scene because IPB sort of "guesses" what will be in between some of the frames to save on file size, whereas ALL i records each individual frame. So you may see some motion artifacts in IPB, however, in an interview setting with minimal motion you might not notice the difference.
@@GriffinConway Thanks for the info. Keep the great videos rolling...
Thanks Warren! Also apologies for calling you William in my last comment, I think I was typing quickly and it auto corrected your name! 🤭 hope to catch you in the next one!
Thank you griffin
Thanks for watching Leo!
What you can say about 1 dc? 1 dx mark ii better?
Can I record on a Ninja V with the Mark III and leverage the raw capability?
Unfortunately not. It can only output 4k 10 bit 422 in clog 1. No raw output, and no clog2 output
@@GriffinConway Oh man. I just picked it up too thinking I can save money on the cards and use a ninja. Which memory card are you using and size?
hoping the price drops like a rock on the m3
Thank you so much for very detailed comparison. A question about external output through HDMI, what are the options for external output to external recorder and can you record 5.5k raw externally?
Thanks for checking out the video! Hdmi options are 4K up to 60p. There is now raw output through the hdmi. I believe it will output the 4K signal even when recording 5.5k raw internal as well
Griffin Conway Thank you again Griffin for helping out. Dynamic range is impressive, certainly worth the upgrade for me from 1dx ii
Definitely agree. That was one of the big reasons for the upgrade for me
HI!, hope you find some time to answer me, I'm a hobbyist photographer with over 20 years experience in film-shooting and recently got into digital (I know a bit late..;), I never needed fast AF so got myself a 5D II, which I love.
Oh, and thanks for your great video!
I just got the 1DXMK3 too - but the RAW. What are you editing it in? Premiere won't play nice with it.
Try the free version of Davinci Resolve. And if you prefer to edit in premiere you can just export your clips as pro res and edit them in premiere.
I heard it will import it but not actually edit it. I’m sure we will get it in a few months though. And definitely, hit me up if you are in the area!
@@GriffinConway Conway x Armando three way collab. If you guys do another test let me know, I'll come blast some BTS for you guys.
would you recommend using the Atomos Ninja V with the 1dx iii?
Ya it works pretty well. As with any external recorders, it is not a perfect flawless solution. Sometimes you will have a few small things that are annoying but overall I still use my ninja v a lot with the 1dx iii
Hey Griffin great video! What monitor would you suggest me to buy for my 1dx mark iii so that I can use false color when I’m shooting raw. Do you think that the small hd focus 7 would work?
Get the Ninja V, and you can get false colours and waveform, as well as record in Prores, so you are not dealing with H265 files. That is what I am doing with my 1DXIII
I agree with Warren, I use the atomos ninja v and it works great and also the pro res files are really nice.
@@Warren_Liebmann Thanks a lot Warren!
@@GriffinConway Thanks for the help man!
nice comparison Griffen!
Thanks Matt! I enjoyed your 1DX3 and R5 content.
Now i want the Mark III even more. Luv my Mark II but damn.
There you go! That would be a great setup! Glad you enjoyed the video
@@GriffinConway Thanks so much!
Paul Morris I'm curious Paul- what cable are you using?
Hey Eric check the link in the description. I put a cable that works with the 1dx 3 and external recorders
Griffin Conway that's crazy though. Even my 5d mark 4 has autofocus and face detection in 60 frames 4K mode
At least I think it does lol. I'll have to double check
Thanks for replying Griffin, I also use the 120p mode on the 1Dx II a lot because of the small amount of rolling shutter :)
Good stuff bro👍🏽
Thanks for checking the video out Teddy!
hey do you not sell your lut you use for this video?
it looks really good even at low light
Thanks I don’t sell any luts right now but I will consider putting together a small lut pack in the future
@@GriffinConway can you privately sell me one of your luts? if interested email me rondelrickburney@gmail.com
Great review. Thank you
Thanks a lot Christopher!
Griffin Conway your welcome 👌
🙌
Oh shit were you predicting the R5 would have overheating limits?
@@GriffinConway - l look forward to your work with the C500mii, then, Griffin!
catch you at next post
Really appreciate the support Mike!
how do the cameras compare between photos?
I covered my experience with photography in the video with both cameras
@@GriffinConway I'll rewatch :)
just the video i need to spend more money! great video thank you !!
Thanks for watching Irvin! Glad you enjoyed it.
Nice video bro!
Thanks Kleber! Hope the 1dx is treating you well!
Griffin Conway haha Im crazy about her!!
Love it bro! So stoked for you
Doesn’t the 1dxmk2 have c-log??
No, only the 1DX Mark iii
Very helpful
Thank you!
Unbiased. Genuine.
Wow thanks a lot for the kind words Ron! I’m just glad you find value in the content and can enjoy it. Thanks for checking the videos out!
Excellent Review
Thank you!
Man, I’m so interested in seeing that 1dxiii vs c300iii video.
I’m probably in the minority here but I’m actually more interested in those two cameras than I am the r5. I have my reasons 😂
That’s awesome Sam! Thanks for the comment. Anything specific you would like to see in the review and comparison?
Yeah man, most definitely! I’m most interested in seeing how that dual gain output performs. I mean, I’m the 1dxiii is no slouch obviously in the dynamic range performs close to or identical to the c500ii but I’m interested in seeing if that dual gain output will squeeze a little more out.
I’ve been a c200 shooter for about 2 years and considering the upgrade to the c300mkiii for my A cam so that’s the context I’m looking at that camera with. I don’t get too caught up in the spec war, but I’m such a sucker for the most dynamic range possible haha.
Awesome thanks for the feedback. Hopefully I’ll get it in soon for testing
Right on 🤙🏼
I actually preordered a C300 Mark iii so I’m pretty pumped to start learning it.
Hopefully they’ll start getting shipped soon!
2500$ action exterior/Interior photo/vedio events camera even used ! ....What you recomend
quality doesn't look good in video. maybe it's the lighting technique but that can't be a $6000 camera. odd
that tiny difference doesnt make up for the price difference
This is wrong 1DX mk3 is at least one stop exposure down every time compared to mk2... There is no way it's such a difference in dynamic range....
much have you tested these two cameras? I would love to see you results if you have. I can guarantee the settings were exactly the same in my test, as I record with my phone bts while I do it. The results surprised me as well.
Imagine not knowing about AI Servo mode in the 1DX2. Of course you can capture multiple frames in focus in photo mode, What on earth are you talking about? How do you think sports photographers use it?
Watch the video again, I never said the camera didn’t have ai servo autofocus. I said it doesn’t have servo in live view, which is true.
The price is too high though...
fiance. is beauty!!!!!!!!!!!!
Totally agree :)
Canon eos r5 is the new beast..I feel kind of sorry for people buying this giant camera. Just saying ✌️
EOS R5 looks like a beast for sure when it actually does get fully released and shipped. As for now, there are plenty of working professionals getting plenty of use with the 1dx mark iii.
D3 better
