Pls your reflections on the gh5mk2 for vlogging. Intended by Pana for this purpose, but not on your list. For myself I am not that much or deep in this CD/FD battle. I am good with the AF/CD or MF with peaking and AF ON when needed. I am asking for your honest reflections on this vlog cam, pls. Thank you. Frans, from the Netherlands.

Sean! Thank you for this! I have been following and learning from your and your team for many years!
Big hug for your and your team!
For all creators here, I know it can be frustrating and overwellming at the begining (and later too) not only for the creative power pushing us to share, but also for the limitations on cash, content ideas, and ALL THE NEW SKILLS WE NEED TO LEARN etc. I started "seriously" my content creation just one year ago using 99% my cellphone and a clip mic, and sometimes a second old cellphone my wife won't use any more. Now I am in a stage of NEW CHANNELS, new content and ready for the next level of creation. It takes time. Be patience.
The most important thing now is to create positive content aligned with your passions. This is the real trend and what we need to create more.
    Use what you have!
and improve on the way :)

The best camera for beginners starting off in TH-cam is their phone to be honest. It takes care of the basics with little to worry about and has manual controls.

@@ThinkMediaTV Still making my way through the video because it is long... lol. I seen the Chase Jarvis line part. I remember when he said that. But yes, I started doing TH-cam and the phone was my best friend. I have a DSLR but it was so much easier to just buy a plug-in mic, a phone bracket (for the tripod I have), and start recording. Truth is cell phone mics are not half bad to begin with if you do not have an external mic. But you also now get varying camera options on modern phones so you can go normal, wide, tele in the middle of the video shoot. You can even pause (I hear this is an android thing) and adjust your scene and press continue and keep recording (I use this a lot). It is just so easy. I will eventually take my time to test out the DSLR but for now I just upgraded my phone (from a S10 to S23 Ultra) for better low light and quality. I also purchased little hand size lights that fit on mini table tripods for extra light (to battle the smaller sensor issue compared to DSLRs). So it all works and is easy.

WHAT a great video. Breaking down everything for those out there that don't know anything about cameras this really is good info. I am only 25% of the way into the video.
I would love to see a video by someone that talks about buying USED equipment for streaming - so there are cameras you can buy used that are way cheaper than buying a new low end camera. Anything to avoid a "webcam".

  • @2daysd

Sean I noticed you mentioned the Canon R50 had very limited use of lenses, which is only partially true. With an adapter (Canon’s at $99) all the Canon EF lenses become available for this camera too. I use my adapter and the EF 10-18mm for my vlogging and the results have been awesome. Also, the Canon RF 16mm isn’t the only option for use on still video. For that I use my Canon 24mm mostly but have used my Canon RF 18-150 as well. There are plenty of different ways to do this and there’s no doubt the possibilities will grow in the future. No one should be afraid to go with Canon but I do favor starting with the R10.

Thanks for the guide. Gets me up to speed quickly.
Just started a youtube channel, using old gear I had. Nikon D500 with 30mm f1.4 and Canon 200D MK i with 24mm f2.8.
Currently have Sony A7s IV penciled in for when I can afford it after it comes out. With limited space, full frame makes more sense and being able to record in 4k provides the option to crop in on videos or downscale for sharper quality. Backup plan is a Canon R8 or just the Sony A7s III.

Thanks for the great information. I got started almost 3 years ago with a Camcorder (Canon VIXIA HF R800) and I do not regret my decision. $300 for the camcorder w/ memory card, and another $300 for basic mics, softbox lights, and a few other items got me started. A camera is on my future purchase list, but for a hobby channel making $40 per month, $2K for a camera and lens is hard to justify. I still would not put "video quality" in my top 5 areas I want to fix to grow my channel.

Many years ago, I had a panasonic lumix _waterproof_ camera. It had a *super past full off to taking the 1st shot time,* I left burst mode enabled, and it fit easily in most pockets. It was great. I'd take it hiking, rafting, bouldering, you name it. It did the *take anywhere / always ready* so well.
My aunt had the non-waterproof version that instead was able to mount lenses. Each has their purpose, but I felt like I had much more use/utility than she got out of hers.
I've missed that camera ever since it got stolen. I've been considering buying something like that again.

I think the most important point that spoke directly to me, just starting out and thinking about my first attempt at creating content, is that I need to think closely about the non-negotiables. I'll be making technical content within a controlled environment. But I need to be able to go from shots covering (roughly) a drafting table viewpoint down to visualizing tiny microelectronics circuitry. My tentative take-away is that the lens is the starting point for me -- likely a macro-zoom such as the Sony FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II and let things fall out from there. It would be nice to rent one before buying. (I doubt that's happening.) Anyway, thanks. Regardless of your own choices, what all this time taken to make this video have given me is myriad questions to ask myself and also a lot of different technologies and their variations. It's just what I needed at this time, I think. Thanks!

Hi Sean, this was such an impactful video. The note on audio peaked my interest as I've been using a Logitech webcam but just upgraded to a hand-me-down Nikon D3400. I was able to figure out the capture card and clean HDMI (via streamyards) but was having some issues with audio. My question is, do you think the built-in mic is suffice or would my usbc ShureMV7 be the best bet?
The reason I ask is because I wasn't able to access the ShureMV7 w/ the Nikon D3400, the same way I'd be able to when previously using the webcam. I fussed w/ audio in StreamYards and in the Settings but may need to retry a couple more times. I noticed the D3400 doesn't option a shotgun mic, so I wanted to know what reccomendations you'd suggest.

Sean, Yes, a tonne of content and really detailed information that I found myself rewinding and rewatching a few times to really understand your points matching and understanding your points inline with my queries/questions about what I thought/think I need. Basically as a life coach with a private practice, I am stepping up to continue making content, but better quality than i currently make through my iPhone and start a podcast from my home practice, which is basically set up full time for coaching. From the information garnered from this video, I think the Sony ZVe-10L, with the Sony SEL50F18F full frame 50mm lens and the ECM G1 shotgun mic, this set up would be a great, long term for me to continue making content and podcast material. I may need to add an SD card and a few cables but do you think this would be a great shout for what I want? I'm in the UK and can get this for under a 1000 pounds, which is around 1200 dollars. Thank you in advance for you video and tips.

30 million views on YT in the first year from a IPhone 12 Pro Max and a Canon M50 (and not even the mark II)
IMO spend money on the lighting and mic vs the camera year 1
Now I am shopping for a 4k camera full frame as I am making money off YT, and I am not going to spend stupid money as that would be dumb.

I had bad experencie with my gopro9 at near 0 C and below temperatures , when initially showed battery 40 % then suddenly shut down with low battery message.

Hi Sean, I loved the video, thanks for giving so many tips. You talked a lot about filming with the camera still and in this style of video where only the person appears. In this case, I film recipes, with me appearing in the video at times. To have this blurry background effect in the case of recipe videos, which camera do you think is best? My budget isn't the best because everything is very expensive in Brazil, I could at most go up to the Canon R50.

The Canon R8 with the super cheap RF lenses eg: rf 16mm2.8, rf 24mm f1.8 IS absolutely kills in the beginner to intermediate level, vlogging to portrait/events. All that is a point and shoot camera body size.
    That value proposition is insane.

I have a question regrading lighting and cameras.
Currently I record with a Logitech Brio webcam in 1080p, 30 FPS (not high def). For my lighting I have two SpectroLED SP-E-3600 Essential 360 Daylight LED light panels (no backlight and I record in front of a gray painted wall). The lights produce 5600 degree K Light. I think the lighting is decent, but it doesn't compare with the quality of the Think Media videos.
I'm thinking about upgrading my camera to a mirrorless camera and I have a couple questions.
    1. Is it recommended to continue using my LED light panels are my point and fill lights? I've had them for about 13 years and they seem to work good.
    2. If I did upgrade my camera to say a Sony FX30 would my current lighting be acceptable or should I swap that out too?
    3. I sit at my desk to make videos so what lenses would be recommended to work with an FX30?
    Thanks in advance.

The best thing about the zve-10 aside from its jack of all trades abilities, is its super compact size. Makes it a no brainer to take any and everywhere. And the kit lens isnt horrible btw. Especially for only a hundred bucks? It gives you the essential focal ranges you need. And the af is snappy and you can affect the speed of the zoom if you want a cinematic looking zoom in video

zve-10 or zve-1? They made at least one typo in this video, so it sows confusion.

    • @vanishdx
      @vanishdx 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@allthecommonsense They meant the Sony ZV-E10 (56:30). The Sony ZV-1 (56:00) lens is not swappable where as the ZV-E10 can be changed with other compatible lenses for that system. I'm looking for a camera myself for content creation and for taking with me on the go when I travel so the ZV-E10 is likely what I'm going to buy.

I think they are great solution for a very specialized need.
Pro: convenient and allows for skilled opperators to manage multiple cameras by themselves
Con: they don't have "the look" that proper camera and great glass (lenses) will produce

I'm a beginner. I need a camera I can easily move around my house and that has a good mic or that can have a mic plugged in. I'd like to be able to plug the camera in while filming. Sometimes I'd be filming in the basement. I don't know if I need 4k since I'm just planning to talk about books. I'd like a lot of storage capacity. My main hesitation on using my phone is limited storage capacity.

    • @FallacyAsPraxis
      @FallacyAsPraxis 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Stick to 1080p. People look better in 1080.
4k is mostly hype. The file sizes are HUGE, trickier to record, and take longer to edit and upload. Most people don't have 4k monitors or don't really care. If you are a beginner, you don't need any fancy or expensive stuff. Use your phone and a decent budget lighting setup. You don't need large storage capacity on the phone. Write your script and record it in pieces, then download each segment to your computer and delete from the phone and record the next one. You splice them together for a long-form video during editing.

I’ve watched several TH-cam videos related to overheating while live streaming. I have some live interviews I’ll be doing soon and it’s just worrisome. I’ve seen the ZV-E10 overheating (or you have to change the internal temp control to prevent it from shutting down), I’ve seen people complain the Sony A6700 overheats while live streaming. I guess I’m just confused. Out of this first list. Which ones won’t over best while live streaming for, say if the interview runs about 2 hours? Is it only the FX30 because it has an internal fan? Thanks so much

  • @Zarzoyed

I currently use webcam AVerMedia PW513. Problem with it then it starts overheating whole mugshot feed on the livestream turns into a slideshow. Audio is fine, gameplay is fine, just my face turns into a slideshow. So I have to drop resolution to let it cool down a bit. Its very annoying problem. Also image is fairly noisy. I have two Elgato mini key light so I'm lit up very nicely, but image is still pretty noisy, some artefacts on the skin etc.
So I'm starting to consider proper camera for live streaming and video making. Sony zv-e10 is very often recommended for content creation. Question is will it endure 3-4h stream without overheating. Also what lens to choose? So for now I have no idea what to choose.

I look forward to this video presentation every year Sean! I’m a former M50 user which was awesome to get me started with both still creation and vlogging. But I am a Canon R10 user now - and the 2 hour non-stop video ability and better overall capabilities over the R50 makes me think the R10 is a better choice over the R50. But I understand why the R50 would be an upgrade over the former M50 for beginners. Still have my M50 - don’t want to let it go as I have great lenses for it.

    • @Theverifiedvee

Is the R10 better than the M50?

    • @2daysd
      @2daysd 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Theverifiedvee For my purposes, yes the R10 is better. As a TH-cam creator, I like having 2-hour straight running video capability over the 30 minutes capability of the R50. Also, the R50 is an excellent camera but is considered mainly a beginner’s camera. The R10 is more of a beginner to mid range user’s camera. If you buy the R10, make sure to choose it with the 18-150 kit lens version. I love that zoom lens and use it all the time. But watch a few good reviews on each camera and get the one that best fits your needs and budget. I love my R10!

I have a canon 80D I have cheap prime lenses, and one wide lens. I'm not stuck with Canon. I might keep this camera. I want a photography and video centric camera. I'm thinking about the Panasonic Lumix S5IIX with kit lens, it looks pretty sharp. I have lights and a tripod and other things already.
    I want IBIS
    View finder
    low light performace
flip up or flip out screen.
I wont aways be inside with lighting.
I might wait a few months see whats coming out this year.
Other Cameras I've considered have been video centric or hybrid.
Panasonic micro 4 thirds G9II (lenses are affordable)
    Sony FX30 ( video only)
Canon R6mark II downside ( no third party lenses currently available, expensive RF glass)
