On the 1DX2, Can the 2 Separate Back Button Focus buttons be set individually for One Shot and Servo? Just like you mentioned on the back button focus section of your 5d4 tutorial? I love that feature on the 7d2 and i don't think i could give it up.

Hi bro, I hope you love the camera, unfortunately I couldn't find any used for a good price here in Italy, the used with 1,20,000 shutter count is arount 2000 euros, searching rigorously to find for a good price and will use it for another 10 years as I am an enthusiast and not a professional shooter 🤩

Back in the film days, around the time of the 1984 Olympic Games, it was possible to get a camera whose motordrive (frame rate) was 14 fps. The motordrive sat under the camera body and was massive. (It added about 20cm to the height of the body.) This 'drive was Canon's *_'F-1 High Speed Motor Drive'_* and you screwed it to the bottom of your camera body, just like you do with a battery grip these days. The problem is, those were the film days, and the *largest* roll of film you could obtain was a mere 36 exposures. So, when running your camera at 14 fps, you had to change film every 2.5 seconds! That's why digital cameras are indeed an advancement... a CF or SD card is like an endless roll of film!

Tony, I am not even half-way through your video tonight and it has been by far, THE most informative and helpful video I have found to date about my new camera on YT or anywhere else on the Internet for that matter. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video and to share it with all of us, I have paused it so many times and tested the features you have shown us and made some changes as you have mentioned. Thank you again!!! Beautiful camera!

I almost always use the eyepiece cover on long exposures, mainly at night, but also with 'Big Stopper' shots during the day. The risk of light leak affecting the exposure can also occur if, for example, you have a camera pointed downwards during a long exposure on a tripod during the day. All of this won't happen to most people generally, but it can indeed occur.

Great stuff as usual! I had a 7D that I loved dearly, and decided to trade it in for a 7D Mk II, which just came yesterday. After updating the firmware and setting a few of the custom items as I'd had them on my 7D, I stuck my 24-105 on it and took a walk. I was really happy with the results. Interestingly, I found that compared to my original 20-year-old 300D, my 20D, and my 1DX Mk III, the 7D was a bit more temperamental regarding settings. The other three cameras, whether I'm using Tv or Av, my two default modes, seem to cooperate with me more readily, whereas the 7D always made me work a bit harder, which is fine because that's how you learn. I'll be curious to see if the Mk II acts that way in the long run.
Whatever happens, I'm really happy with my obsolete and archaic kit. Between those 4 camera bodies and a bunch of fairly good glass (only the 70-200 f/4 and a 500mm remain on my wish list), I have hardware that I'm confident will last longer than I will. I have nothing against mirrorless, but as I don't shoot video at all, and since what I have is more than sufficient for my needs, I don't see the need to expose myself to further expenses moving to the R-series. Cheers!

Just purchased the 1DX Mk II, thank you for your tutorial. You weren't kidding about the cost of the CFast cards..wow! Moving a tad towards the video world and am excited about the 4K video capability! And, like you I also subscribe to CPS (Canon Professional Services). I have used it over the past two years and highly recommend!

The voice memo is a "gotta have" for a sports shooter. Many/Most of us use Photo Mechanic and that voice memo allows us to record who the player was or what happened. In Photo Mechanic we can easily hear what we recorded as we caption the photo. Love your videos.

Hey Tony, thank you for your hard work and dedication to helping others.
I don't own a 1dxm2, I have the 7dm2 (chosen based on your recommendations in 2015, and I love it!!!)
but I'm still learning a lot from this and your other videos, I really appreciate it!
Maybe I can teach you something, but I think you may already know it: I noticed that when you were in the menu, you used the joystick to move between the pages and the subjects, instead, try using the Q button to quickly move between the subjects~
additionally the front main dial works well for moving through the pages, quicker than the joystick.
    anyway thank you!
and I'll certainly purchase your photoshop book soon!

The eyepiece shutter is mainly for metering at night or with an ND filter where stray light hitting the viewfinder will affect the metering. You can test this yourself by moving an SLR around with the lens cap on and see that the light hitting the viewfinder will affect the metering.
Another thing from the film days when you couldn't take test shots or use live view, but can be a nice feature if you're not manually metering at night.

Tony, I noticed there is a shortcut that you don't use that you also may not know about - I myself only found out about it by accident - and that is you can hit the Q button to move quickly between menu tabs without having to scroll through every sub menu tab like you were doing in the video. I don't know if is actually listed anywhere in a manual but I now use it all the time after accidentally discovering it.

If you are using two cameras, you can use the GPS log to geotag the images taken with the other camera or you can use it to tag images that for some reason (like indoors) did not get a fix.

  • @Patrickivalo

Erasing images with dedicated erase menu will save you one button push per image so i suggest using this option when browsing through images. You can assign mfn button to switch between any shooting mode ( bulb, tv , av, M) and C shooting mode with just one push. So you can use camera in manual mode for dedicated purpose ( lets say flash radios on and doing product photos)and then instantly switch to say av or P mode ( without flash radios) and get your different shot outside controlled environment. Use front buttons for recording on/off- you can switch recording on with camera up above your head or with gloves on in winter.

I think the only use case for the OVF blackout is when using serious ND filters in daylight. I block mine out when I use my 10 stop ND, as the sun or general ambient light in the day will screw up my 5 minute midday exposure. Pretty niche case, I just use it for capturing busy scenes with annoying people and cars so they pretty ,I have disappear in a super long exposure.

  • @forsterl.stewart414

The eye piece shutter is very useful, for the times when during the day using the remote shooting or anytime your eye is not at the eyepiece during a long exposure. Say a waterfall shoot or using a nd filter for a long exposure.

Not sure if you have had this comment before yet but minutes 25-26 you are talking about rating images and the audio recording segment and how it is hard to find them. If you hit info to show the basic information like image number, at the top you get a music note if you have audio, and right next to that is the rating assigned if you have done that.
Having been a 1D/1DX user for a long time, just learned a whole bunch of ways to reduce workload and switch settings faster. I had never used the button to change folder and image quality for one. THANKS!

  • @jesperlett
    @jesperlett 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@29:50 The eye piece shutter is not relevant for super long exposures at night since the ratio of light fogging the image through the viewfinder is the same as for normal photography. But if you you take super long exposures in daylight, the ratio will shift towards the viewfinder proportional to the density of the ND filter used. I.e. the light fogging from the viewfinder is 1000x greater when exposing with a 1000x ND filter on the lens. Then the eyepiece shutter is relevant.

  • @nandoblondemobydick5438

during long exposure at night, the curtain which hide the viewfinder is very safe to use it, during a long exposure at night you probably wear some kind of light atached at your head or a flashlight or maybe you friend or a car, when you do landscape the timing as you know is crucial, surelly you don´t want to ruin a photo cause by accident some light pass to the mirror through your viewfinder, i highly recomend you use it at least in landscape :-) it helped me many times maybe not too much accident like this occur but it is not a pain menu just push your finger and it is, for more you can´t forget it is covering the viewfinder :-) cheers

You mentioned having had issues with corrupt SD cards. It's interesting you mention the erase options on this camera ( which of course all cameras have ) where you can erase images from the card in camera. It's widely known that deleting images in camera will often corrupt the card. Much better to just leave the duff image on the card and move on and leave it on there. Maybe give all your duff images a delete tag ( on Nikon but I'm guessing Canon have something similar ) so you can identify them later making it easier to delete them on your computer later. Once everything is off camera just reformat it and the card is clear. You'll greatly reduce the likeyhood of corrupt cards. In closing, don't use the delete function EVER! Otherwise a good overview of this stunning camera 😃

Tony, it is very easy to do in camera, i.e. a frame grab for 4k video, but it doesn't seem to work in LR, even though it gives you a choice to do it - but somehow I can't get it to work - can you figure it out? Also, I tried using very high SS to see if you can get tack sharp images while recording in 4k - it works but of course it looks bad in video. Maybe you can do a short video on what sort of shutter speed you can get away with without the video looking bad. 1/800th works great for sharp images (I did it only as a test) but it of course looks bad. Thanks. Paul

I know this is old. But just a btw for 1Dx users. Transferring 4K via cable works pretty well when I do it on my iPad Pro, but I’ve never tried it on a PC.

I cannot save a custom shooting mode C2 or C3 no matter how many times I try. I had no trouble saving C1 though. What am I missing ? Can anyone help ?

Hey tony I've got a amateur question. When shooting 4K its 17.9 ratio aspect and I see most of the 1dx videos on TH-cam has these black bars on both top and bottom. Anyway to get rid of those? I really like the camera but I'm worried that it's not gonna show up in full screen. Please help me hahah.

Hey Tony, are you doing one on the D5 too? There are some things that are different then my D810, like I haven't figured out yet how to change the group area AF points to dots instead of squares. But I did manage to figure out one really cool thing, I assigned Fn 2 button so that I can be in group or D25 and hold it down for single as a quick more accurate switch without having to move your eye from the viewfinder. I'm a AF-C back button focuser as well and this has been a god send.

Even I had cfast 128GB sandisk failed and had to to data recovery. I tried to access the files through USB 2 port and accidentally removed the card assuming that nothing is getting accessed ... so it is important to mention that if u use cfast card, use only usb 3 port and also unmount correctly to avoid file system corruptions.

Using the "Q" button allows you to jump from one menu page to the other, instead of using the wheel which forces you to scroll through all the pages. :-)

The 1dx mark ii does not have an internal intervalometer, not sure why you said that.

Money aside, 1DX Mark II or the 5D Mark IV? Let's assume a wide range of image and video interests also allowing for ongoing exploration in both areas as I improve my photography skills. I already own two L lenses. Thanks!
