That Floods outro is probably my favourite guitar riff/solo ever and thats saying something. Its just so goddamn atmospheric.
Over the years I actually appreciated Trendkill as an album waaay more, so much so that if youd ask me on the right day, I would say its their best work. It for sure has the thickest and darkest atmosphere.

It's also their most experimental album. Not necessarily the best, but maybe the most interesting.

There's a 24h loop of this riff on youtube. Once I was feeling melancholic af and that outro came to my mind, I just played that loop and listened to this mastepierce for 3,5h straight without a single pause. And didnt get bored at all, just had to stop to finally do something instead of sitting and listening to a single riff over and over again lmao. Its otherworldy beautiful, one of my top favorites as well. Also, thats my favorite metal guitar solo ever

I kinda learned Floods by ear on the piano and it sounds so pretty but twisted. They’re so underrated and unfairly labeled. There’s a lot of emotion put into many of their songs, especially this album. One of my all time favourite albums, easily.

  • @petrilampela

Phil did lot of vocals where he is between two notes, or between two semitones to be exact. Like in "Mouth for War" the first note in the verse seems to be always just between minor and major key and it sounds really cool to me.

The first time I'd ever heard anything of this song was around 2010. I was about 15 or 16 and had spent the night at my buddy's house.
He had woken up before me and was practicing guitar. As I woke up that morning, he was playing the outro riff perfectly and I remember being so mesmerized by it. It was the first thing I heard upon waking and it was a ridiculously memorable thing.

21:28 is what i came for. When that outro riff kicks in, you see his eyebrows raise. Man that ending gives me fucking chills and i have heard the song about 500 times. God damn that is a cool as riff. Melancholic, Beautiful, Awe inspiring, Lonely, Peaceful, Finality of a chapter ending, etc. I believe it was called Rita's Lullaby originalyl, and Dime recorded a multiple hour loop on cassette of him playing it so his gf Rita could drift off to sleep when he wasnt around, and she could feel like he's still there. FUCK that is beautiufl

Dime actually credited Rex as the main writer for the solo. The ending was something Dime had sincs he was 16 and oringianlky recorded it as "blue light turning red." Also this song is about relapse not an actual flood. Haha

He had a suprising vocal recovery around 2006-2009 but then he went back to drinking and smoking and also got older which resulted in him almost not being able to speak until 2020-ish.

Yeah he's not saying die. He is saying Flood and they are using like a decaying delay effect. You can only hear the F sound the first time he say the word in the phrase. Then it delays with the first syllable cut off and so you then hear the "lood" part during first repeat and so on. and the last repeat before the phrase starts over it's pretty much just the "duh" sound. If any of that makes sense.

Don't know if anyone has pointed this out, but not only was Phil heavily addicted to heroin at this point, but dime, Vinnie and rex recorded this record in Texas and they had to send the tracks to Phil in new Orleans where he recorded his vocals with Trent reznor in Trent's studio. They then had to send the vocals back to Texas, so the overall communication between both parties was very minimal. So I'm sure if the band didn't like alot of Phil's efforts, there wasn't much that could be done. But still my favorite record by them.

Floods is amazing, thanks for looking at it even though it wasn't requested a lot. Also, Phil has an incredibly low and gritty voice, naturally - if you listen to interviews you can hear it. I think it might be due to years of an unhealthy lifestyle, so to speak.

I'm only at 13:05 in and making this comment, but I'm kinda with RIchard on this one. I really like listening to this song, but I'm always really just waiting for the Heavy sections to drop. Maybe the Heavy Sections sound so good because we made it through this section where the vocals are really difficult. It kinda sounds like what it is. It sounds like a guy singing who is in pain and doing really heavy drugs. As a whole though the song is excellent when you're in the mood for it.

  • @Trymr
    @Trymr ปีที่แล้ว +2

I have a theory that the reason the singer sounds like that a lot is the guitarist’s choice to tune down 25 cents from C# standard. So he almost always sounds slightly off because I’m guessing it’s hard to match that when you’re used to singing to A=440hz. So then he’s attempting to match it but it’s not quite perfect. I’m not positive since I don’t experience that problem since I have perfect relative pitch (not full perfect pitch).
It’s hard to put myself in normal singer’s shoes though since whatever’s playing I just can match perfectly. When other vocalists told me that’s not how it worked I was really confused. I used to get really damn frustrated at my vocalists as a guitarist when they wouldn’t instantly hit perfectly on the note without practice & they’d be like “it’s not just automatic where you just snap to it” & I didn’t believe them. So I’m thinking it’s maybe a disconnect? Could be wrong & he’s just flat like how Anthony Kedis consistently sings 10 cents underneath the note & must hear music that way or something.

"Do you want a lunchable" 😅😅😅... Much more even sound. I don't know if the clip mics are a pain, but your quality just jumped up quite a bit. I dig the dynamic between you guys... I always thought that it was the final solo that was given all of the kudos. That was the striking part to me, anyway. I was lucky enough to see Pantera three times, back in the day. I always enjoy Justin's take on things. I'm a self taught bass player, but played tuba in concert band throughout school. I've been exposed to just tons and tons of music. I can hear everything that Justin seems to physically react to and it's definitely entertaining. How about reversing roles every once in a while? Could be cool?
