For decades Orion has been my favorite song of all time. Yet every time I hear To Live is to Die I think... ehhhhh... hang on a sec....
Beautiful. Timeless. Masterpiece.
😂 I hear ya. It's a tough choice!
I’ve always been jealous of people who could hear music and then just start playing it ! It’s amazing to me!
The one guy I know who can (music teacher) does it in the most smug, self-righteous way possible.
You can train your ear. Once you find the root note you can normally work out chord progessions etc. But I'm nowhere near this guys level
I love it too. I learned to play guitar by ear. Just listening, feeling, and replicating what I heard. ❤ its simple if it's already in your soul.
Practice practice practice. Everyone is born musical geniuses but over a short period of time, the ability goes dormant. It can be reawakeded. However, it's a curse.
@@brentcraig That was deep and clear. I haven't played my guitar in a few years. It's still there staring at me every day wondering when the new strings are coming.
That song alone is the reason why Metallica is the No. 1 of the Big Four. No other of the four bands has ever done anything like that. Not even Mustaine. That song has so much influences and sections, I don't think I've ever heard a metal band do that before. Maybe after. But not before. Not even Maiden. There's typical metal heaviness in there, there's classical structure, bluesy solos, Spanish/Mexican harmonies, an accoustic intro/outro which sounds Greek to me... It's an incredible piece of music and it will stand out forever like some classical stuff does.
Try Testament. They’ve done better.
First listened to this song when I was 9 in 1990 out of a tape I found with no marks/info. So I didn't know it was a song from a band called Metallica. I could only wonder "why is this music making me feel such an inexplicable mournfulness, where does all this sorrow come from....?" and fell in love, could not stop listening to it. During the next three years I got to know Metallica by Ride the Lightning and the Black album. It became my favorite band immediately. I got ...and justice finally like in '96, didn't have metalhead friends who could've shared it with me earlier and to make matters worse I lived in a rural area far from music stores... music was a scarce good for me and I was addicted. So imagine how blown away I was when I played that album for the 1st time and THAT penultimate track came up. My fav song was from my favorite band. And I had no idea for like 6 years. Bless these guys.
@@tanneredge9774 I know Testament since their demo, when they still called the band Legacy. They do have some good instrumentals. Especially "Musical Death (A Dirge)". It has a beautiful clean part. But it doesn't come near "To live...".
Sadly they have never been able to replicate this. They had a chance with Jason Newstead but blew it.
@@herbertwest9626 Then you and everyone who liked your comment are deaf. Testament actually deserves to take Metallica’s place on the big 4 and I personally consider this fan boy energy. Go back and listen to The New Order album or Practice what you preach one more time and say that again
James says his style of playing is basically playing drums on guitar. That’s why you feel that way about percussion’y guitars.
Don't think I've ever heard about James saying that but it makes perfect sense, I never thought about it that way..
@@sevet3568true he said it even recently
makes sense considering james played drums at one point
@@sevet3568 he mentions it on the 72 seasons interview he did recently
He also mentioned it like 10 years ago. Also mentions it on his guitar center interview
My nephew died in the crib in 2008, smothered by his blankets. I fled the funeral and went home and smashed this song and it was very important in my healing process
Side note: It’s Hetfield who plays that little solo in the middle where it breaks down - it’s at 13:40 One of the few solos he’s done on studio albums
Thanks for the info! 🤘
I like Hetfields solo's more than Kirk's. They are more musical and emotional instead of hitting pentatonic notes.
@@justinv6586 they certainly have a lot more “feel” to them
that's because kirk was just playing riffs dave mustaine wrote (early on at least.) Always more technical than emotional, those two in general.@@justinv6586
Theres a james solo in master of puppets aswell.
I like the approach to each song you play to him.
He listens, may or may not appreciate it, then plays it on the piano.
It's brilliant.
This might be my favorite music reaction channel.
Completely original.
Thanks guys.
Keep the hits coming.
Thank you! We’ve been grateful for the love we’ve gotten so far. We had no idea people would actually like it. 😂 Just thought it was a fun idea.
For whatever reason, perhaps that I grew up with Metallica, or that somehow my muse was already an anthem, the band never seemed particularly happy or angry - more like a wheel inside a ball than man against the wall.❤😊
No one does intros or outros like Metallica. The outro of this song, leads into a pretty hardcore intro of the the last song of the album. When you play the piano at the end of your video, it brings the melody even more to life, and tugs hard on my heart strings.
Absolutely LOVED that pioano playing at the end, just beautiful.
A beautiful ode to Cliff, what a tragic freak accident, I actually remember the day I, we, all heard the terrible news, so bizarre and shocking, took Metallica years to recover, in a sense they never really have (imo)...and all that could have been, alas, yet we did get to experience his inspirational talents...RIP Cliff
R.I.P. Clifford Lee Burton 😢 amazing talent taken at the prime of his life 😩 imagine how much better of a musician he would have been had he survived 🤔
he was not yet in his prime ,yet BIG BIG LOSS.Just imagine CLIFF in 88. Metallica would be something else I imagine a lot better but who knows.Anyway BIG BIG LOSS for music comunity.Sorry for my english hallo from CROATIA
@@stankopesa226 agreed 🤔 greetings from Canada 😃 I think your English is good 😌
@@stankopesa226 HUGE LOSS!!! In the few albums he participated in, he set a foundation that would become legendary. BUT, you cannot discount what James and Kirk added!! Lars also had a great vision, and Newsted brought the fan energy to the band! Such an amazing group of guys. Rob is an amazing cohesive fit to an already epic band! Love these guys!
It's hard to imagine cliff playing with metallica after 86 watching with Jason but I wonder how different they would sound and look had he not pass away. Like blackened was something jason had helped create while one and to live is to die were both songs that had been thought of while cliff was around cause one was a song james talked about with his brother when he was younger after watching the film Johnny had his gun. So those songs would definitely be on there but I'm not sure about anything else.
I'm the biggest Metallica fan in the world and I want to thank you both for this reaction, please do alot more Metallica, AWESOME 🤘🤘🤘🤘

This guy is awsome! Playing at piano after hearing it once. I'm stunned.
It blows my mind every time. 🤘
It's bass guitar
😃 The piano gives a new ending for the song. ❤
Agreed! It gave me (Richard) chills. Thanks for watching!
13:40 - What a beautiful reaction! That Hetfield's solo is pure heart and one of his most emotional interpretations. You described it just as it is, thanks for that!
This song is so incredible. The music tells an entire story with so much emotion. Another Metallica masterpiece.
Most beautiful Metallica instrumental Song , blues and classical influence. The Metallica Burton Requiem.
Loved the piano playing at the end. 🥰
Thank you!
@@Greatmeasures you’re welcome!
Do more of these with piano
I’m like that on guitar - I can hear a song and pretty much instantly find the chords and learn it, but it always impresses me when someone can go right to the piano and play the notes. I would love to have the ability to be that talented on piano, and classically trained
I love Cliff Burton. On my Mt. Rushmore of bass players but he only got to play his song for 5 years. Rob is now the longest running bass player even if you combine Saint Burton, Newsted and McGovney years together.
This song moves me every single time i hear it!!! Great Reaction to a classic!!! Peace to you both!!
Thank you!
His reaction is so interesting.
Thank you! We’re planning to do more very soon. If you have any songs you would like to see him react to, please let us know.
Suice and Redemption guys! That would be a cool one to react to for you guys! I think it’s a heavily underrated instrumental! There’s a live version i believe in denmark that’s just amazing!
So cool guys, keep doing more of these.
Truly iconic Metallica there. Beautifully crunchy and heavy
I've a newfound appreciation for the piano now thanks to Judson & Vessel.
Much appreciates for all that you've done so far, looking forward to more. Cheers!
I love both Chopin and Metallica.
Metallica was my introduction to metal and Chopin is my favorite classical composer, along with Bach.
Bach, btw was a huge influence on Cliff Burton. The intro to Damage, Inc. was based on a Bach composition called “Come, Sweet Death”. I’ve listened to that Bach piece, but couldn’t tell any similarities. But, I’m not classically trained and my ear isn’t that well tuned for analyzing music.
Sounds like it might be a good idea to react to those two at the same time. Thanks for the info!
Reverse the intro to Damage Inc and then A/B them. The intro to Damage is played backwards.
I was the same i just cant find whats similar .. maybe we need to be able to read music on paper to see some similarities ? I dont know . 2great songs
Oh my please don't apologize for that one, the piano interpretation at the end was just wonderful even with how it varies from the song you just heard. Thank you, I will come back to hear it again. :)
Love how bluesy that first guitar solo is, I wish these guys had kept up releasing an instrumental track on every album. They are some of my favorite Metallica songs and they really show off how melodic they could be. Especially when Cliff was a part of the band, those instrumentals really shined
The end of the video was amazing !!! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! 🤘
He has a great ear, good pianist, cheers!
I learned this song on guitar when i was 15 (now 46), i still play that acoustic chord cycle when ever i pick up a guitar, its like a warm up. Hearing you riffing those chords on the piano, with all the extra top notes was wonderful.
…but then The Black Album (1991) was almost bass-driven which kind of makes it up for ‘Justice’. I feel the absence of bass on ‘Justice’ was almost a tribute to Cliff as a way to show him they loved him and the emptiness he left behind. And then, Bob Rock comes in and bass is all over the Black Album. In other words, ‘Justice’ was their coping record and the ‘Black Album’ made them find themselves again.
And the rest is history.
Especially “The God that Failed” and My Friend of Misery”. Two really underrated songs on that album. Both of which, I doubt Judson has ever heard before. Might be something we do in the future. 🤔
You just made a great point !!!! METALLICA 4 LIFE
But also, TBA didn't have massive layers of double/tripled/quadrupled guitar tracks like AJFA did.
Wow, ok, so i just watched the first vid of this channel like 15 min ago. Am now checking out this one. As a 30 year Metallica fan i never get tired of listening to them. Love the way you guys "re introduce" people to these amazing musicians. Can't wait for you guys to do (Anesthesia) - Pulling Teeth. Keep up the good work! Love from Holland!
Thank you for the kind words! 🤘
The weird thing about the presumed lack of bass on this album is that I used to listen to it all the time on my Walkman back when they were a thing, and if I turned the bass boost on it made the album unlistenable because the bass would boom so much. I'm pretty sure the bass is there, it just follows the rhythm guitar exactly note for note so they both bleed into one.
It definitely isn't. Lars' mixing instruction was to turn the bass down to where you can barely hear it, then another 6-8 db. If you listen to the isolated bass track of Dyers Eve there's a part Jason plays under the chords by James and Kirk that sort of goes along with Lars' bass drum. It can't be heard at all on the album.
@@The_JustJoshing nvr noticed the bass tbh
It's the guitar tracks that are just so bass heavy. Multi-layered guitar tracks with a lot of high and low end, and the mids basically fully cut out
I hear it as a big, annoying low hum. Nothing distinct.
@@andjustjizzforallThe retroactive bitching about the lack of bass is so tiring.... This album was considered heavy ASF when it came out and nobody noticed or cared about the bass thing... At that time bass was often hard to discern on metal albums anyway, and Metallica themselves were making the bass less audible with each album.
Please do The Outlaw Torn as well! Such an emotional song too.
S&M version though!
Also written for Cliff!
R.I.P. Cliff Burton. Imagine what METALLICA could have become if he were still with us.
My absolute favorite song as a kid.
Don't stop every time .. they build up to a difrent feeling as the song progresses, when you stop everytime you get yanked out of that awesome vibe
Thank you amazing xx
The man picked it up by ear.. :) Awesome.. Keep up the good work, I jam this on my guitar daily :)
That was some very cool piano work there at the ending of this video! Pro tip, try not to pause during the solo's and bridges. Thanks for the reaction!
Thanks for the feedback! We’ll try to stay away from the pause button during solos and bridges from now on. 🤘
Here is a protip @scrolemodel, go hear a song for the first time then go play it with your inherent autistic ability on an instrument that is not used in song. I would be willing to bet that Judson is a musical genius, reminds me of an autistic savant. So Rock on Judson!!!!!!!!!!!!
The bass is actually slightly audible in the remastered version, also the bass drum and guitars low end is tamed so the overall mix is much more listenable. Highly recommend to listen to that

Hi one of the most beautiful songs to have been written cliff rip he wrote half of that song the slow accustic piece is james and cliff work what I know is it's 1 of the last song cliff was writing before he was taken from the world 🌎 rip Clifford Lee Burton ❤ this reaction
What I love about this song is that played on repeat, it has no breaks.
Really loved this pick!
Definitely one of my all-time favourite 'Tallica songs!
At first it thought this dude was odd but a few minutes in I started loving him. The way he feels music man!
Oh wow, the piano part at the end is amazing, even if improvised. These music would do GREAT on classical instruments!!!!
I love the way he breaks it down. Y’all guys are awesome Musical Team
Have to start by saying great pick. This is one of my faves and was responsible for helping me learn guitar coming from a piano background. I only had an acoustic when ...Justice came out so i plugged awayand learned like every Metallica part ever doe with clean guitar, while learning the chunky as well, but struggling on an acoustic. Eventually get an electric. Path was set. I sooo loved the piano renditions at the end. Beautiful. Might have inspired me to go play some keys after 40 years!
That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing! 🤘
I could cry. You both are so legends and calm down people. They listen to my favorite band. 😍
Maybe you will love Bleeding Me or Low Mans Lyric.
One of my fav ever metallica instrumentals which pays tribute to former bass player cliff burton who died in bus accident in Scandinavia when band was on tour. That melodic middle section gives me goose bumps after all these years as the pain of that loss is felt uncontrollably at this part. R.IP. Cliff burton.
Unforgiven is on the following album, so it makes sense that you are noticing some similar cord progressions.
Love the reaction
Greetingzz from Dubrovnik lads
Thank you! 🤘
Hetfield's best solo for me 👍🤘
Love to see your take on ´No leaf Clover´. Great vid!
Coming very soon! 🤘
adding to this, this song is placed on the album just before the albums final track (dyers eve) which, if not expecting, will come out of no where and matches the aggression
This was a great video! Great song and conversation keep it up and do Paleface Swiss!
Love Paleface! I saw them in Atlanta earlier this year with Angelmaker and Bodysnatcher. Amazing show! 🤘
That was awesome. Please do more Metallica. I love Theurich music
This is the best review of this song I have ever seen! 100%
Love u too
It's soooo cool that you can instantly play parts of the song after listening to it once. I'm A music fan, not a player. You're amazing, not as amazing as MetallicA, but they are my heroes!!!
We want more piano version of him, you are great.
I hear all 5 stages of grief listening to the track... masterpiece!
Yes! That’s the perfect way to put it. Thanks for watching! 🤘
more metallica!!!!! LONG LIVE TO METALLICA
I love how he reaches for the piano at times
Cool reaction..one of my favorites.. another group to react...Lovebites from Japan... swan song chopin intro...enjoy..regards from Chile
Thank you!
13:44 his reaction says a lot
Reaction videos are fake as fu**. They almost always have an overwhelmingly positive reaction to every song they react to. It's simply to feed the ego of the fans of the band/artist they're reacting to. LOL!!!!
The guitar tone is the best ever recorded
yeah so much mid crunch. just whacks you in the face
No other songs, of every genre, is comparable to To live is to die.
i would listen to him doing a whole piano cover of metallica songs ngl
These Metallica tunes played on the piano is freaking bad ass!
The best band ever man IMO. Great reaction brother
That piano in the end 🫀
Oh get this guy on for more reactions. He's a character.
You can see that he's not only listening to the song, but already following the structure and the combination of the different sections. When he plays the piano in the end it's like the melodies are just flowing out of his hands. Wonderful. Speaking of wonders, there's a short melody he plays which Metallica didn't play and which to me sounds like something from Marillion. I wonder if he heard that band somewhere and unconciously weaved it into the Metallica melody.
This song makes me tear up..reminds me of watching my late brother and a friend of ours both on guitar playing this..he loved metallica and this song. He could listen to a song with no tabs or anything and play ot back exactly how it was played. He was only 37...today he would have been 46. Left behind 1 son who plays exactly like him and by ear. Metallica has touched and changed so many lives.
A generally chronically underrated piece of music.
"it's not angry, it might make you FEEL angry." Dude. holy shit
For me, this song is Cliff's farewell🥺
Took me a moment to read his odd headbanging movements. It’s mostly the bass drum! 🤘
There’s nothing more fascinating to me than classical musicians reacting to my favorite bands
Thanks for watching! 🤘
We miss you Cliff! 🤘
I forgot what it was like to have that album released and the wait for the release day and to sit and get stoned and listen to it unveil the next 3 yrs.... nothing like it.
NEVER NEVER PAUSE DURRING A KIRK HAMMETT SOLO
😂😂 We’re leaning that the hard way. 🤘
I can't get sick of this song. Been listening to it since i was a kid and still love it. I don't care that everyone seems to hate rhe production on this album i think it sounds great.
The part he's mimicing a violin is actually played by the guitar with volume swells
first part of the poem was written Paul Gerhardt
Can you please do ORION and Metallica and the call of Ktulu
We sure will! I’m pretty sure he is unfamiliar with both of those.
F$cking impressive!
Love what y'all are doing! Just to be clear though, Garage Days Re-Revisited (The $5.98 EP) was the 1st studio release with Jason Newsted. It was all cover tunes though. BTW, what is y'all's back story? I just found the few videos you've posted in the last couple of weeks, but not story of what/how y'all decided to do this. But again, FANTASTIC!
Thanks for the info! We met a little over four years ago and bonded over our love of music and the two completely different tastes in music that we have. We’ve been great friends since. About a month ago, we were on the phone with each other and got into a conversation about the music in HBO’s Succession. Judson started breaking it down in a way that completely blew my mind. I thought how cool it would be to get a conversation like that on camera and I asked him if he would be interesting in making some reaction videos. It took some persistence from me, but I finally got him convinced to do it. We’ve had a blast doing it, so far and the positive feedback from everyone has been a very welcomed surprise. 🤘

I think you are about to find out there is a lot more taste for this kind of thing than most people would ever think.( the metal/classical crossover between the 2 different styles) Some classical people I know do like metal also and the same the other way around as well but for the most part each group isn’t very familiar with a lot of the music from the other side even though there is tons of music that they would love if they look up the right composer/ or bands etc.
🤔I would also be interested in this going the other way as well the odd time , You listening to some of Judson’s favourite classical music as well
FANTASTIC! Y'all should go into that a bit in one of your videos. Let the audience know a bit more about y'all. I'm locked in now, and I RARELY hit that notification bell, but y'all earned it! Can't wait to see where this takes you!!@@Greatmeasures
It's kind of cool reaction and thoughts from classicial musician. U could also try listen to Pantera Sleep or Hollow , Sepultura - Inquisition Symphony , Alice in Chains Nutshell MTV unplugged
Thanks! I think he knows Nutshell, but I’m certain he doesn’t know the other two.
He was just listening the whole time, not saying too much, then unexpectedly played some parts on piano. Really cool! A lot of times I watch so called classically trained musicians react and talk a lot but show nothing. I wasn’t sure about this guy…but at the end, putting it down on piano…if this really is his first time hearing this? You are very perceptive of music. I’m from a Musical family, and have been playing guitar and drums for years, and the one thing about learning something new I learned from my uncle (RIP) is shut the fuck up and really listen.
Thanks for the kind words! I’ve had the same experience with other videos. He has a way of taking the whole thing in and then playing certain parts within a matter of seconds. It amazes me and makes me jealous at the same time.
Check out “The Daily Doug.” Another classical composer who brings a lot of his own depth to rock music - and particularly Metallica.
@@Rickkelley365He reads way too much into the lyrics when many bands and fans don't really care about lyrics for the most part...
He taught you a very important lesson no doubt about it 😊
Your uncle was 100% right as S’ingTFU allows one to hear all the instruments at the same exact time together and also be able to separate them all in your mind individually as you listen to it. It is absolutely essential to learning any music by ear. Once I learned how to do this when learning saxophone 🎷 a few years earlier my guitar playing and figuring things out by ear improved quite a bit over just a few months.
The slow part in the middle was a piece already written by cliff, the rhythm guitar part converted from bass. This song is more depressing than angry.
Agreed. That opening riff has anger, but that clean middle section is one of the most depressing and emotional pieces of music ever written, imo.
@@GreatmeasuresAbsolutely. And listen to the intro/outro with the accoustic guitars. To me it sounds like it's influenced by some Greek folk music. The light melody with a melancholy undertone. Beautiful.
No the middle part is James in tribute to cliff. Cliff wrote the intro and outro
The way ive always interpreted this song, is as a farewell to Cliff. As i understand it, Cliff actually wrote parts of it, and this is the last notes written by him
The whole video was brilliant, but it could be equally awesome if it was just the part at 18:55.
The piano rendition of a classically trained musician, of one of Metallica's most... delicate and epic musical phrases, ever.
I’m trying to convince him to do a cover. 🤞

Love how he wanders around in the melody
if you do a Justice song again, check out the version on "And justice For Jason'
I got to see the And Justice tour and fortunately got to hear rhis album with bass. I worshipped Cliff in the 80s tbh and he was the 2nd tattoo i got after Jimi Hendrix, but Jason was oretty cool in the bamd live. His vocals at times were better than James for some songs live i thought.
Thanks for the reaction!
That’s so cool! I got to see them in 2017. Nothing like the Justice tour. Still a good time, though. 🤘
Of all the "pop" genres of the last 60 years, metal is the one genre nearest to classical. I love Judson's analysis of it. This channel came up after watching REN's Hi, Ren for like the hundredth time, and rather than watch the reaction I came straight to the channel. Dunno exactly what drew me over, but when I read the brief, single sentence synapsis of the channel, I switched straight over to the video tab and sorted by oldest first. I guess I'm taking the journey with ya. Down the rabbit hole we go into my favorite genre of them all. (But like Judson, I played a few instruments including piano, so I listen to everything from Patsy Cline to Lamb of God to Glenn Miller to 90s hip-hip to Hank Williams, and my daughter plays 9 instruments, as well.) I love his technical analysis, and can see him, in his facial expression, he's mapping it out on the keys. I bet he VISUALIZES the music as if it were like mathematical. He's fully immersed in it. I'm sort of envious, too, that this is the first time hearing this song. I wish I could hear some old Metallica for the first time.
Holy shit! I knew it! He fricken picks out the basic melody on the keys. Bitchen. Yep I'm on the ride now.
Been subbed for a few days, enjoying the videos. 👍Has Judson heard any music from Queensryche? The Operation Mindcrime album has some great songs. Silent Lucidity is good to but isn't my favorite song. ✌😁
